- Movies take a long time to make but in some cases, even after decades of work, some of them still can't get made. In this video, we take a look at the movies that get stuck in development and those that get some money - tens, and in some cases, hundreds of millions of dollars - put into them but never see the light of day. Welcome to Development & Production Hell.

We don't need a live action of Akira.
Especially not from Waititi after Thor: Love and Thunder.
Who said that? I'd like one
I’d Watch it
Maybe if it was Denis Villeneuve or Christopher Nolan directing, but NOT Waititi. He literally does not make any sense for an Akira adaptation.
@@robertolanderos5308 I think Villeneuve would be the best choice. After Dune, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049, I think virtually any sci-fi/sci-fi tangential property would be safe in his hands.
I don't trust streaming channels to make these shows. For every "Last of Us" there's five Witchers, and Resident Evil tv shows
So they want a pg13 lovecraft movie....... are they okay?
One gets the sense they never really read Lovecraft. Or, if they did, wanted to shoehorn in a Hollywood romance & ending.
Akira - Live Action Dialogue - If Done by Waititi
Kaneda: "Hey! Tetsuooooo over here!"
Tetsuo: "What in Neo-Tokyo are you doing, KANEDAAAAA!?"
Kaneda: "Remember this dance we used to do as kids?" *Does Orange Justice Dance*
Tetsuo: "Think you can out dance me?"
Kaneda: "Spot light's on you, pal." *Satellite shoots Tetsuo.*
I thought there were already like a million metal gear movies? They come packaged with these sweet little stealth games and they're at least a trillion hours long

I really hate these studios that are afraid of making R rated movies. They are effectively knee-capping the director's creative talents all so they can get a wider audience and larger profits instead of actually having faith in names like del Toro to pull in that larger audience despite the R rating.
Especially odd considering the trend of R movies doing well - Logan, Oppenheimer, Deadpool, etc. There's a larger market than they realize. They just need to make the budgets a bit smaller.
An older example is the unfinished 1937 film adaption of Robert Grave’s’ historical novel ‘l, Claudius’ produced by Alexander Korda, directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Charles Laughton. The production was plagued by difficulties culminating in a car accident in London that badly injured female lead Merle Oberon. Another problem was the disagreements between Korda and headstrong actor Laughton. The production had cost UK studio London Films the equivalent of about 50 million US by the time it was abandoned.
I heard(unfortunately don't remember where) that the reason we never got a WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT sequel was that Disney and Amblin/Spielberg were in disagreement for years on which company owned Roger Rabbit. When that got cleared up, both sides figured licensing all the different characters would be prohibitively expensive.
I would love more Lovecraft screen adaptations! My dream movie would be adapting The Shadow Over Innsmouth
That would be a great one. Would also love one of Shadow out of Time. Lovecraft is one of those authors whose works should translate well to the screen, but it's difficult to get the cosmic horror aspect right.
In The Mouth Of Madness is the best Lovecraft film.
The only reason to make another Akira is to adapt the parts of the manga that weren’t in the anime, which is what Taika has said he wants to do, but I’m sure if Katsuhiro Otomo wanted that to happen, he would be fully capable of doing that himself.
Which leads one to think that perhaps a movie isn't the best way to go if an adaptation must be made. A TV series might work better. The recent development also, for some reason, seems to be multi-part movies (The Strangers, Horizon, Rebel Moon, Wicked). I really hope that doesn't end up being the case, as it's more or less been a recipe for bloat.
Great video, but I have a complaint: when you mention a person, could you put their name on the screen, because I often can't understand the person's name just by you speaking. One example is 4:18 in the video.
This is a tip that would greatly improve your videos, especially for those who don't have English as their first language and sometimes want to research more about the person mentioned.
Keep doing the good job 😊
That's a great suggestion. I'll do that going forward!
Sparing the public from yet more formulaic , overwrought celluloid atrocities is the best possible use of these funds
I would love to see a video of the dc movies that never got made, especially with how much detail and facts you put into your videos. Keep up the great work man
I appreciate it! Will do that one for sure, it's just going to take a little while. There are so many projects and while I'm at it, I might as well do films + TV in one.
Did you just say dc movies that haven't got made??
Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi was the least of Ghost in the Shell [Hollywood] problems.
The original character is a brain in a box that changes body with upsetting (to her own sense of self) regularity, so a western face is no biggy.
But the character in the movie has maybe 1/8th of the agency that the manga one has, the movie script ignore most if not all of the philosophical implications of AI and cybernetics explored by Mamoru Oshii in the animated movie and the Hollywood script probably has gotten Kenji Kamiyama and the rest of the "Stand Alone Complex" anime serie staff to laugh their ass off at its formulaic plot...
My thoughts exactly

wait so youre telling me oscar isaac is not gonna play solid snake anymore!? 😭
Seeing the amount of movies del toro never got to make is a tragic story itself
Yup. Him, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and Steven Spielberg all have a lot of movies they wanted to do but, for one reason or another, have been unable to get them done (though in Cameron's case, it's probably because Avatar is taking up all the time).
Solid video essays, my brother. Your channel shall be big.
Been waiting over a decade for "Guardians of Luna" to be finished, hopefully John Noble doesn't die of old age before he gets to do the voice acting for it. Production began in 2006.
Your voice is so soothing, my dude
Great video! Fascinating topic.
From what I remember, Josh Hartnett turned down a number of huge roles (Superman, Batman).
I appreciate it! I think Superman was the only one he turned down, though from what I recall, he was considered for Batman and Spider-Man as well. I think the discussions never got as far there as they did with Superman. Still, takes a LOT to turn down $100M.
Dude, amazing video. I can’t believe I’ve never seen your channel before… definitely subbing. I look forward to your future content
Thanks - I appreciate it! Hope you enjoy the future videos I put out as much as you enjoyed this one.
I remember watching batgirl n it was great. I still don’t know why they ain’t release it to streaming at least
Kojima is the poster child of development Hell atp
A PT? 😉
Informative, great research!
Pretty sure it was Paul WS Anderson attached to Metal Gear Solid, not Paul Thomas Anderson.
Ah would love the del toro project to get made🤞great video!
That's one of the ones I'm holding out hope for as well. del Toro is such an interesting filmmaker and I think he deserves the PTA treatment. Whatever movie he makes will be one of a kind.
@@Syntopikon agreed! If he has a vision and passion for creating something I am definitely interested in seeing it
Shame on the establishment for not allowing a Jabba movie. Of course Jabba could be inclusive, any identifying or census category is capable of being fat and loving 7-Up. Zack Snyder needs to pick up the project and have some of those shredded 300 be the ones to surround Jabba.
It’s a shame that we never got a Metal Gear Solid movie with Keanu Reeves as Solid Snake, Jeff Bridges as Revolver Ocelot, and Jesse Eisenberg as Hal Emmerich.
I don't believe that anyone is asking Guillermo Del Toro to make In The Mouth of Madness a love story.
For one it makes no sense and more importantly Hollywood has been absolutely allergic to love stories for over a decade now. I think the last one I remember seeing is Cold Mountain. Whatever the reason for it being in production Hell it ain't someone pushing for a love story. It's probably solely based on budgeting
They didn’t say make it a love story. But have a live story within in.
In other words, sexual tension. Think the Mummy with Brendan Frasier.
Lastly, you have to be joking if you don’t think Hollywood makes love story movies.
@@jamespohl-md2eq not joking at all, almost all relationships in movies and tv now are strictly platonic and lacking in sexual tension and there are very few exceptions, even fewer where it ends with the couple staying together. Instead of a kiss you get foreheads pressed together. Usually ends in breakups or death. Outside of romantic comedies there is basically no romance and they don't make movies like the mummy anymore either. Perfect example of you being wrong. Brendan Fraser forces a kiss in the first one. Twitter would crucify that decision now
@@MrDarcyProductionsSimply ludicrous. Embarrassing.
Should I list romantic movies.
Oh. And they don’t make The Mummy anymore. Jfc. Every Marvel movie has a love interest.
@@jamespohl-md2eq every Marvel movie is completely sexless except for The Eternals. They're terrible examples of love stories. Go ahead and list some romantic movies for me from the last ten years. I'll start you with La La Land and Anybody But You. Neither is a good romance btw but I want to give you a head start
Suprised that You didn't mention "Highlander" reboot.
I really like your videos.
Thank you - it means a lot & I appreciate it.
@@Syntopikon I'm going to subscribe and like to help the channel.
The Legend of Zelda! That's a great idea. A big-budget action flick featuring Dobie Gillis's Lesbian pal. Roll 'em...!
Who's gonna play Maynard?
What about the Spawn reboot that Todd McFarlane keeps on saying will happen for many years?
We need a live action "fern gully".....what the hell!!! James Cameron already did!!!!! What's is he call it avatar...."he did" oh shit they must have a time machine
A very irritating example of development hell: the animated feature-length adaptation of Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams.
if i was rich i would make a movie lol aint ganna lie
I’ve heard about a live action Akira movie for years…
That loot was not wasted it was pocketed by corpo goons.
The hollywod obsession with love story and happy endings are stupid.
I really hope thhey don't make a live action Akira i swear why do Americans have to ruin everything and own everything ...ugh😢
God you mumble bro. I have to increase the volume soo much.
AVI ARAD is gonna ruin LEGEND OF ZELDA and METAL GEAR SOLID
Spawn
Ghost in the shell wasn't even 'whitewashing' ...The original Manga the body of the Major is literally called 'a western model'
yeah it was just articles from news sites that didn’t know what they were talking about. the just saw a white woman in a Japanese adaptation and assumed it was white washing.
they’re the same people who complained that the one piece live action “made” Luffy be played by a mexican actor and not a japanese one (even though Luffy has been confirmed by Oda to be from south america if he was from the real world).
@cwega2463 like "where are all the black people in Chernobyl"
Superman Returns was not a commercial failure.
Anime is not very good in general.
