The funniest thing about Ultimate Spider-man is that it was the project that started the Marvel-Disney animated universe, but the last few seasons of the other shows take place in the Marvel's Spider-man animated universe. It's like a stab in the back for Ultimate.
Well i just see it as poetic justice. Ultimate did the same for Spectacular during the Avengers crossover. Maybe all Spiderman cartoons are fated to inevitably consume their predecessors at the start.
To be fair, Ultimate Spiderman and Marvel's Avengers were always going to be fighting uphill battles because the shows that preceded them , Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Spectacular Spiderman, were both very beloved and adapted so many storylines so incredibly well.
And even then, all these shows just can't escape the shadows of X-Men and Spider-Man: The Animated Series. And then there's their rivals from the DC Animated Universe, Teen Titans, The Batman 2004, Disney's Gargoyles, Spawn, and so on.
@@BLACKSTA361 Admittedly true, but the latter suffers for having an unfinished story. Even his appearance in Across the Spider-Verse begs more questions than catharsis. And believe me, I'd rather enjoy an imperfect yet finished story than an almost perfect yet unresolved one more... unless it's Half-Life, which admittedly feels somehow *right* when it sorta ended on HL2: Episode Two (plus Epistle 3).
Am rewatching Avengers Assemble again and man, the first season was okay, but they just plop in new characters like they have been the show since the beginning, like give me original material, not the same crap that's in Live Action, but in fucking animation. Disney fucking ruined Marvel Animation and it pisses me off so much because we could have had such good animated movies and shows like the DCAU
I need more "he's right behind me isn't he" jokes, but the punchline is they turn around and there's nobody there, then the camera pans a little and the guy in question was slightly off camera in front of them
I kinda like the idea of electro's motive being "to become pure energy" because it's not something easy to relate to. I feel if they make electro an addict to his own powers, they can craft really interesting stories. At first, he uses his powers for his own gain, then slowly his own powers become his only drive... like a crackhead.
The reason why Disney pushed Nova everywhere (including Marvel Vs Capcom 3) was that: guardians of the Galaxy. The fact he just ends being demoted to extra in the movie said how much we cared for Disney Nova
You mean "NOVA Corp" were in the background! Though yeah the fact it took till the CURRENT phase for them to finally decide to getting around to a Nova (and took out to Corp off screen so we didn't SEE how Thanos took the Power Stone from them which was lame) is kind of dumb (they don't even appear in Vol2 of GOTG)
@@HenryLouis21 Oh yeah my mistake on that (I forgot about when they showed what damage Ego's "Seeds" were doing when he activated them!) Thanks for that🥰
Only reason I was exited to see Nova was because of this show but then after giving this show an actual thought, I realized how shitty it was and how boring it was I didn’t really remember Nova being an irredeemable asshole but that’s because I forgot he was in it, he’s THAT uninteresting
@@higaiwokeru The entire team in the show was incredibly uninteresting and basically get written out of the show when they introduce the spider characters. The same goes for the second-team.
The whole team being jerks to Spidey is the sort of thing most shows would do in like the first 5 episodes, and then they learn actual teamwork and establish friendly dynamics between each other. Instead the show just kept them like that forever until they stopped being relevant?
And? The teammates where jerks that's it. But there are also some moments where they actually team up to fight the bigger threat and care for each other. Idk why it pisses you off that much. Ask the hivemind about that for me.
@@SamS.7598 Doesn't sound like he's pissed and more like he's just voicing criticism. It's annoying in the long run, especially when they try to be all "But we're friends!". If you constantly show a car breaking down, then have a heartbreaking scene where you're supposed to be sad that it has to go and they say "I'll miss it, it was so good, it never let us down!", that'd be bad writing and also annoying, wouldn't it?
@@SamS.7598 well it's just the same joke over and over again and it gets pretty tiring, maybe you don't get tired of it and find it funny each time and that's fine, comedy is subjective. But for me it seems more like exactly like Ghastly said, it's something that would be played for laughs early on and then have a teaching moment learning true friendship and teamwork and then the bit dies down. When it just keeps happening throughout the entire show it just isn't funny for me, personally, anymore and I do find it grating as the show goes on. I think that's the point that Ghastly and GodzillaMendoza are making.
My favorite tidbit about this show is they had Drake Bell Spider-Man appear during the original Spiderverse event, seemingly just so they could have the 67 show’s version make fun of him. Yes, you heard that right.
The way that the whole team bullies Spider-Man, the leader. It gives me vibes of the relationship between robin and his team in Teen Titans Go. They both constantly make fun of their leader and bully them. And They always make the leader an outcast.
When watching the show as a kid I always felt like spidey would always somehow deserve it. Granted i don’t like ttg for the reason your saying, I don’t think ultimate Spider-Man is on that same level. Most of the condescending stuff comes from nova and it’s shown that they do care about each other. I think the worse of it was when the team first formed but that’s realistic given how arrogant spiderman can be in this show. I also feel like Spider-Man could be seen as an unreliable narrator. Similar to Deadpool, he does break the fourth wall, which opens the possibility that what we’re seeing could be from a view of bias. But that’s both a stretch and a different topic
You know your side characters are underdeveloped, when you can just look past Squirrel Girl being a recurring character. It takes genuine talent to make her existence seem completely unremarkable. Like, she’s the type of character you’d assume would be either indescribably annoying or an unexpected saving grace in a show like this. For better or for worse, she’s a weird character that invites a visceral reaction.
Kinda sad she isn’t used more. I mean seriously has Disney even read her bio? She is a reject mutate with the power to control squirrels and has defeated incredibly powerful villains like Thanos and Doom. AND DOOM HAS A FEAR OF SQUIRRELS CUZ OF HER :D HOW BADASS CAN YA GET IF U MAKE DOOM OF ALL PEOPLE SCARED OF A LITTLE CUTE SQUIRREL. Lol sorry bout that but hey it’s still pretty impressive
I remember being a fan of this show when it came out (I was in middle school) and I wasn’t aware it was considered to be the “bad” one until two years ago. I still need to get around to watching Spectacular Spider-Man properly since I didn’t watch it much as a kid due to not liking the art style.
warning it's cancellation was very sudden so when watching it you just kinda hit the last episode without even realizing it because it's not even a proper cliff hanger it's like a cut off sentence
I agree with the comment about the art style of spectacular, it's fine when he's got the mask on, but there's something about the eyes of people that's almost uncanny valley
I think they should keep the whole thing that Electro likes Spidey's jokes. It's pretty unique and i think it would give some interesting insights on him. The fact he tried the lightbulb thing for instance makes him either easily humored or super bored.
TBH I like the idea of Spidey and Electro having a sort of battle of outquipping each other while fighting if the context allows for it to be mostly intentionally humor-focused, Or just Electro laughing to Spidey's jokes.
The deadpool episode is actually one of the few episodes I actually enjoyed. Not only that, but I found that everything that didn't work with spidey (not just the 4th wall breaking, but the cutaway gags and even the chibi) worked with deadpool.
that's because that stuff had been deadpool's shtick for YEARS at that point and honestly it feels like they originally wanted a deadpool show but then went with spidey for some reason
I kinda find Spidey’s humour to be on the same length as Deadpool’s. Minus the fourth wall breaking and the gruesome jokes about how he wants to unalive people.
The thing I find the weirdest is that Fury said he wanted him to teach the group, but aside from a few very short training montages, Peter never seems to take the role of a mentor. Yes, he helps the team in their individual episodes, but it seems more like a friend than a mentor. Not to mention, it's clear they are all in the age gap, so it's harder to see them as a teacher-student. It would have been better if this was an adult Spiderman, but it would have been weird if Spidey was the oldest of the entire group. It also doesn't explain how he is the most experienced of the group. Yeah, he has actual experience in combat, but Nova was tried by the Guardians of the Galaxy, Danny was tried to be the Iron Fist, Tigress comes from a lineage of heroes so I believe she had some training. The only one Peter could actually teach is Luke, but their fighting styles are so different, Luke would learn better from heavy hitters like Hulk or the Thing, not someone as acrobatic as Spider Man.
True. Luke would probably be the only one. Although spider man could argue that you need to be flexible as well as strong kinda like a football player learn ballet or yoga (cut to visual gag).
100% this. It's implied Spider-Man has been a vigilante for some time at the start of the show, yet his seniority never really seems to show from what I remember. There are a couple of moments, but they're few and far between where he'll act like a seasoned crime fighter then switch right back to being a complete novice making dumb mistakes like a newbie.
29:39 okay, I’ll give this show points for not doing what they usually do with Body swap episodes and just have the characters being dubbed over by whoever they’re swapped with. It’s a whole lot more realistic and funny to hear voice actors trying to emulate their afflictions.
Right? My biggest two pet-peeves are the "shrink to microscopic size and go inside x character" episodes and "body/brain swap episodes that change the characters voice actors to fit the brain and not the vocal chords"
@@JimboPro Sure I like that show, but I just hate when they swap the voices for no reason. it's so obvious that that shouldn't happen if the bodys vocal chords stay the same.
Honestly even if this show isn't that good when you look at it objectively, I absolutely adored it as a child. It was one my first introductions to the Marvel universe as a whole, and is a large reason why I know as many characters as I do. It's where I learned about the different spider-men and Carnage (even though in this show he's created completely differently from how he's made in the comics, which threw me off for a couple years)
Same. And ngl when the final episode aired I was omw from school and missed it. So I was depressed for 3 entire days until I watched the final episode at late night 🤣
“A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story” - C.S. Lewis The difference between Ultimate and Spectacular is that only one of these shows is entertaining to both kids and adults. If you loved this show as a kid, then that means it did it’s job, but I think it’s not only much more better, but much more impressive when a kids show is written in a way where you can enjoy it not just as a kid, but as an adult too. It would’ve been cool if Ultimate was a little more like that.
That feeling when you remember this show takes place in the same universe as Jessie, Suite Life on Deck, That's So Raven, Hannah Montana, AND Wizards of Waverly Place.
I definitely feel like the _biggest_ plus this series gets is actually have the balls to not only use Carnage, but actually follow through with using him. Even if he has to be tuned specifically for the audience of the show.
I enjoyed Ultimate Spider-Man for what it was; a fun Spider-Man cartoon that didn't take itself too seriously; sometimes....Like you said, it lasted 4 seasons with 104 episodes and was the only Spider-Man cartoon that didn't get cancelled with a cliffhanger, so they did SOMETHING right to keep it going as long as it did. I would rather watch all of Ultimate over Spider-Man 2017...Now THAT cartoon SUCKS....
No they didn't do anything right Ultimate SM is a forgettable mess that's why it got so many seasons it was just meh a lot of Meh shows have hundreds of seasons it's not something out of ordinary
@@seyio1717 Well, as said in the video, the animation and character designs were fine, even good at times, but yeah, aside from that, everything else in the show was either meh or outright bad.
The fact that Electro is the one villain that laughs at Spider-Man’s puns is charming actually. You bring up a lot of great points. The Spider-Verse arc and the Web Warriors are like the rare redeeming qualities of the series. It’s just neat to see them appear on the silver screen - aside from appearances in the video games and before the Spider-Verse movie.
What's odd about Drake Bell's casting is that, if you watch his EMH Spider-Man cameos, Bell is doing a pretty good job. So I blame Ulimate's tone less than on him than the writing throwing a very loud joke at your face every ten seconds, thereby disrupting any tension per scene.
Well according to Steve Blum, Drake Bell was just looking at his phone during and after recording of the Wolverine episode in Ultimate Spider-Man so I just don’t think he gave a shit
@@LiaManila Yeah that might add some fault on his part. But you feel like there are moments on the show where he was doing good enough but something felt…off.
The one moment from the show that actually made me laugh is the season finale, when Peter referred to the other heroes as "his family", even though they never had a single bonding moment before then. Best joke in the series. Also, according to the producers, the show was supposed to end in season 3, but it was doing very well on Netflix, so they rewarded it with an additional season. They were probably itching to move on after that, especially with Bell's legal problems .
The show was more concerned with making Spidey have crossovers with other heroes than it was with developing Spidey himself, which ultimately ended up being to its detriment. On one hand, as you mentioned, those crossovers were great and felt like they were ripped straight from the comics. On the other hand, all those episodes meant there was very little room for Spidey and friends to have any sort of connected story, making it feel more like a Power Rangers show than one with an overarching plot.
My main problem with Ultimate is that whenever spider-man is fighting one of his main villains, (Doc ock, Rhino, sandman, etc.) it either has relation to his team, or his team is the reason they succeed. I think his whole team shouldn't have been in the show, because for a show named Ultimate Spider-man, he doesn't seem very ultimate if he isn't able to defeat classic villains on his own.
Not true though Spider-Man actually did defeat a lot of his classic villains on his own without his team. I mean take the season 2 finale Ultimate, spider-man single-handedly, defeated goblin, save the city and rescue his team all by himself. Also in the season four finale, he defeated Doc Oak and his partners by himself, while the other heroes were trapped. So you really can’t say he didn’t. Defeat is classic villains on his own when he actually did. Also, I forgot to mention in the season one finale when goblin took over the Hella carrier, and it exploded. Spider-Man single-handedly, rescued everyone inside and took on the goblin in symbiote while he was at it.
@@Blue_Lightning33 Actually, Spider-Man didn't technically defeat them. He cured most of them. He stole Doctor Octopus' cure gun to cure the Vulture, Crossbones and the Rhino of their mutations. He tricked Scorpion into knocking himself out with his own tail and Alex and Adrian were the ones who defeated Kraven the Hunter, not Spider-Man.
@@Blue_Lightning33 I prefer the Spectacular Spider-Man over the so-called Ultimate Spider-Man. The Ultimate Spider-Man is more like the Ultimate Disappointment.
I absolutely loved this show as a kid. Though I haven’t watched in a while, from what I remember, your criticisms appear perfectly valid. I didn’t mind that the original team was dumped by season three, as I became very attached to characters like Agent Venom and Iron Spider in a way that I never was with the former. Scarlet Spider was also a top contender for best character, and the scene where he lets Aunt May remove his mask and name him was just one of my favorite moments in the show.
I think the reason Elecro is good is because he's different in every version and it's interesting to see how the various electros differ and even more interesting the parts that are similarities between them all like electric eels and becoming pure electricity
Here’s how i see electro. He’s a boring ass guy who suddenly got the powers to do whatever he wanted, and the powers to back himself up. He doesn’t have a goal or anything he wants to achieve because that’s not what he does. He’s a dude who just got a good roll of luck, got high on power, and immediately used his powers for selfish gain. His goals change because he wants to achieve something now that he powers, since he got bored quick of doing whatever. Hell he might even want the whole “pure energy” thing because he genuinely thinks that’s what he’s supposed to do. Not every villain needs a deep motivation and backstory, its just a dude who finally got to do something fun
The worst thing this show ever did was Disney replacing Josh Keaton in Earth’s Mightest Heroes with Josh Bell to promote Ultimate Spider-Man. It hurts every time I think about it.
I actually loved the show as a kid. The team and family dynamic the group held was wholesome and fun. The art style, action, and writing I liked as well.
I have a weird sense of nostalgia for this show because I watched it alot when I was younger but in hindsight making spiderman with deadpools humor along with the other issues you've brought up doesn't make it age well, but I'll give the show credit for introducing me to so many elements of Marvel that I've seen in one show right besides earth's mightiest heroes
This show introduced me to so many characters. After i got older and watched "more serious" marvel stuff, i recognised many characters i met on this show
Fun fact: In the German dubbed version of the series, all the characters are voiced by their real German voice actors, which makes the show truly unique. If you're German and have seen the MCU movies in theaters here, you'll hear the actual voices of Iron Man, Nick Fury, Hulk, Wolverine and others in the show. It's a great touch that adds an extreme level authenticity to the show, because no other animated show does this.
never seen this show, but i have to give props that when characters body swap, the actors have to play each other instead of just keeping each character's voice unchanged
I know it's obvious, but Spectacular has the best Electro and I'd love to see someone take that setup and run with it. Really lean into the body horror of a guy getting super powers; a guy who is initially terrified of no longer being human, but eventually grows to love and embrace it. Have him reject his humanity and keep chasing the high of gaining more and more power with the end goal of him just becoming pure energy. And every time he shows up, he's less stable, needing more and more tech to even maintain a physical form. Everybody loves the "dark reflection" thing, so have him emphasize why the most important part of Spider-Man is the MAN.
I honestly don't know if ssm has the best electro. he's mostly just there as a toady after his debut episode. he didn't even want to become energy in the show.
What you said about Peter's "Friendship" with the others is my biggest issue with this show. I hate Nova with a burning passion, he tries to be the jokey character of the show, but A. With a character like Spiderman thats kind of a struggle and B. Their attempt to make Sam "likable" is just by saying he has a lot of responsibility without doing anything interesting with him being the owner of the Nova helmet. Iron Fist and Luke's relationship is also non-existent, non of them have that unless Peter is there. For a "team" to work they have to work with everybody, not just one person. Now yes Spidey is the main character and one of if not arguably the most popular superheroes. But in a show that doesn't just focuses on him, you need more than that to grip the audience. And this is nowhere near as good as Spiderman could or should be. Here's how I'd fix just the core 5, have Peter use the lesson of responsibility Ben taught him to be a better leader. Have Danny and Luke actually be best friends, with Luke being the first person to gain a liking to Peter, and Danny being the calm strategist who helps keep everyone focused. Make White Tiger the lone wolf of the team, then make her realise that she has to be more open and maybe have Nova be the one who helps her through that, additionally this would help develop Sam, by making him take the situations they're in more seriously rather than constantly being a jokey asshole who likes to screw Peter over. These wouldn't be game changing, but it actually lead to them feeling like a team and a family, rather than some rando being forced to work with 4 of his bullies.
In addition to everything you mentioned, I would also like to add that there was an interesting conflict for Sam that could have made his abrasiveness a bit more understandable: the idea that he felt that Peter stole the leadership position from him and that he is just trying to get back what he feels that he is owed by proving that he is better than him, even if it is in a juventile way. This is something established in his very introduction in Episode 2 yet goes pretty much nowhere and while it can't justify his actions, it does give him a motivation that could then have served as the backbone for future character-development. In fact, that is something that all the characters would have really needed from the get-go in hindsight as it would have given them a real personality beyond just the tropes and a way for the audience to understand their actions early. Ava could have been the lone wolf who is driven to become strong so that she will never have to lose anyone ever again like she lost her father and Danny could have been looking for more information about his family who he lost on the journey to find K'un L'un (the lack of real motivation really hurts his character in 'Journey of the Iron Fist' by the way, it kind of accidentally makes Scorpion's claims feel really valid) with him bonding with Luke over similar experiences who wants to find his missing parents.
@@treadingwater86 it's a typical case of how you need to show not tell. This is something my film lecturer always mentions, you have to show you're characters as being good friends, you have to show why they act the way they do. If you just tell us, no ones going to care, what's worse is this was probably a fair few people's introduction to these characters, besides maybe Luke and Danny, but even then they have to make a good impression not be stereotypes of typical teenagers. You could literally just say Luke is the strong one, Ava is the girl, Danny is the zen guy and Sam is the jokster. What's worse about Sam is that the idea probably was for him to be unlikeable initially, the issue is that we don't just dislike Sam for his actions, but we dislike how poorly he's written. He doesn’t grow or change besides appearance and even then its just an inverted colour scheme, there's no reason for him to be the way he is. And Sam doesn't need to be 100% original he just has to be a person, not the shadow of the character he's trying to be
@@Killgore-ip2yq Ultimate's writers probably banked on the fact that they were the first to put Nova, or at least Sam not Richard Rider, in an animated series and felt they didn't need to put much effort into him. And Sam's fine in the comics I don't dislike him or think he's poorly written, first impressions are everything though and I just didn't like Ultimate Nova at all
My issue with the show is that everybody Peter teams up with whether it be the core or other superheroes has the tendency to be total pricks to him all the time. Meanwhile, Peter well deservedly complains about the fact that these guys are total pricks to him, then the show treats him like he's just being a whiny little bitch, and he ends up having to learn a "lesson" that somehow everyone else is justified in being total pricks to him.
@@WolfRider2002 in that one spiderman game, I think it was shattered dimensions, mysterio steals a tablet thing that actually does give him powers. I think something similar happens in some of the shows. It didn’t ruin him as a character
I liked the fourth wall breaks. When I was watching this show for the first time I knew nothing about most of these characters, I didn't even knew who Spider-Man was before this show. The fourth wall breaks served as an explanation to me as well as a way to see what Spider-Man was thinking about or how he felt about certain things. I also thought the running joke of other people thinking that he's just talking to himself was really funny.
Ngl that's what killed this show for me when a kid. In my opinion I just believe it happens way too much, like how Mendoza stated it just occurred far too much and pretty much stated the obvious all the time. Though as a kid I stopped watching the show pretty early on so for the exact reasons I stated so I'm not too informed what happened in the later seasons. Although im glad to know many people like yourself like it.
I didn’t mind the fourth wall break stew I thought was actually kind of funny like that other guy said I love the show and I still watch it today is one of my favorite Spider-Man cartoons
i also enjoyed the fourth wall breaks, they had some kind of charm to them, it was one of the things that made me like the series but i must agree that sometimes they exaggerated on it(lenght wise)
I tried so hard to watch this show last month because I have not seen it before but holy fuck, the show literally stopping time just to say a shitty joke happens so frequently in season 1 that I just stopped completely because it's gotten to the point of being annoying more than just a simple nitpick. This is one of the old cartoons that really didn't age well
I remember having some fond memories with this show?? Mostly because the animation didn’t feel overly blocky and cartoony (super big eyes or simplistic art style used mostly for children’s Tv) and the jokes weren’t too bad!
Him putting the monkey sound effect in other Spider-Man scenes was hilarious. The one where he turns around and there was a dead body at 17:40 had me weak.
I loved this show as a kid, though looking back I wish it had some changes. I would have loved more of a focus on the Ultimate team and time to develop the dynamic between individual characters, maybe even episodes where Spiderman takes a backseat for a while. Like Danny and Luke doing a mission together that inspires them to want to make Heroes for Hire later on, or Sam and Ava learning how to work together since they act so differently.
You’re absolutely right about the character drama or lack there off. What irritated me so much was the fact that certain people who knew him for years like friends or people like Flash Thompson, when they found out about Peters identity: there was no impact. For example, you think Flash would have really freaked over the fact that his superhero idol was actually the nerd/ex best friend he picks on in high school and known since childhood but nooooooo he just finds out, is surprised for a moment, and the next day they act like nothing happened. Are you kidding me?! Character drama is one of the best things that make shows worth watching, without that it makes your character seem hollow and boring, like 90% of this show. Oh yeah Spidey’s supposed “team “we’re really annoying most of the time and seemed to get brainwashed or captured like every few episodes.
I think the thing i'm most grateful for out of this show was that they not only gave a story about Sandman turning things around, but that he became a sporadically occuring supporting cast member.
Yes! This show and the new games really show the helpful "neighborly" side of Spidey. At the end of almost every episode of the show, he's trying to come up with the best possible outcome for all involved (especially the Hulk episodes), it kinda reminds me of Howards and his pigeons from the games.
Thank you for bringing up how insufferable the team was. It never made sense to me how Peter was the supposed to be the leader of the team yet everyone on it seemed to hate and not respect him.
Previous animated Spider-Man shows before Ultimate were so good because even though they were targeted towards children, the showrunners never treated their audience like they were _actual_ children
Or perhaps it's more that they understood that even a child audience is capable of enjoying mature content, like I feel like the stereotypical thing of saying "they knew not to treat their audience like they were children" kinda underestimates children. I enjoyed the incredibles when I was 8 even though that film is overtly adult in many ways, I mean the main plot is about a man having a mid-life crisis and a woman who thinks her husband is cheating on her
This is what I’ve been waitin for! Me and my buddy Samuel would watch this after school on his Wii. We’d both be kinda bored 3 episodes in and switch it over, and my biggest memory is watching it on the spare upstairs couch and realizing Spidey was Drake Bell and havin a laugh over it.
You know, I was always surprised Josh Peck or Yvette Nicole Brown wasn’t brought in to voice a character. Would have made for a cool Drake and Josh reunion, especially with Josh voicing Casey Jones around that time.
Reading the comments on this video has reminded me of how old I am. I was 18 when this show came out so I grew up on the 90's cartoons. So seeing this and comparing it to the likes of 90's Spider-Man and X-Men left me very disappointed.
Honestly, this show would've worked so much better had it taken the BATMAN: THE BRAVE & THE BOLD route, Spidey crossing over with different heroes and go off on crazy adventures every episode would have been enough.
36:04 He literally does the first time he meets him. "You know, you look exactly like me that one time Loki turned me into a pig." "What?" "Never mind."
The scarlet spider stuff was really weird in this show because they made a point that this is their version of Ben Reilly when he looks and acts like Kaine whereas Kaines just a goo monster
I actually really liked this show when I watched it as a kid. I didn't realize people did not like the show that much. This was actually the show that made me start to like Spiderman and Deadpool as characters
One aspect of this show that I liked is the new origin of the Lizard, especially the part where he lost his arm because of a battle that Spider-Man was involved in.
@@captainmega6310 -the original origin of lizard was Dr. Connors was trying to synthesize a serum to grow his arm back. His wife died of cancer ( he should probably have spent his time searching for a cure for her instead), and he becomes the lizard and accidentally murders billy his son, who he had already terrorized in a prior transformation.- disregard. Inaccurate information.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I loved the humour in this show. Sure it can be a bit much at times, but I honestly love how silly this show is able to be and felt like it really put you inside Spider-Man's head. As a kid, when Spider-Man breaks the fourth wall and talks about what's happening, it kind of makes you form a weird parasocial relationship with him, you know? Like he's your buddy and he's talking with you. I sincerely love this show with all my heart even if hearing drake bell of all people say "with great power comes great responsibility" maybe didn't age so well
My problem is that the humor is great for when we were KIDS (even though i never liked it when i was mid anyways) and it's hard to laugh when you are grown up unless you have nostalgia for the show.
@@FormulaFanboy im not going to say that you have "trash" humor cause you still can laugh at Ultimate Spider-Man's humor (im one of the few people who still love Ninjago). Humor is subjective and there is no "superior " humor. If you like it's humor then that's fine for you. What I'm trying to say is that it didn't work for the MAJORITY of people then and now.
I think Drake Bell did a fine enough job as Spider-Man in Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes. He was only in 3 episodes granted, but he was much more subdued in that show. However that was because that Spider-Man was written to be the one from Spectacular Spider-Man and they even got Josh Keaton to reprise his role, but he was recast at the last minute. Hell if you pay attention there's actually a few lines that are still clearly Josh Keaton.
Here's an Electro fact: there was a Spider-Verse comic where one of his counterparts figured out how to go dimension hopping by recreating a certain electromagnetic frequency with his powers. He immediately went to a version of Earth where he became a sleezy but successful millionaire because he never got his powers and teamed up with his other self to create an army of Electros that went around robbing different universes.
As someone who grew up learning and loving about Spider-Man from the 90's show, and not watching any other Spider-Man series, going into Ultimate was different in a refreshing sort of way. I learned more about Spider-Man more from the movies and video games, that they were all pretty closely connected. Ultimate changing it up with Harry being Venom, Flash becoming Agent Venom, Norman being a powerhouse Goblin, and expanding on a lot more super heroes made it entertaining to me. I took a lot of getting used to the 4th wall breaks in the show because it was something that felt so much more Deadpool to me that it was jarring, but eventually got used to it. Definitely not a bad show, entertaining at times and fun to watch, but can't say it's a recommended Spider-Man show to pick to someone who's never watched Spider-Man before when you have the other Spider-Man cartoon series to pick from.
Ultimate Spider-Man was the show that introduced me to Spider-Man. I kinda agree with you that this show might not be the best for people who are new to Spider-Man because it can give someone the wrong impression of who Spider-Man is. I really like Ultimate Spider-Man's version of Spider-Man, but unfortunately, it's not the canon version, so I sometimes have a hard time reading the comics cause I don't like the comics' version of him as much. I just find, whining "I don't like being Spider-Man" Parker to be so annoying. That being said though, I do think the show did a good job at explaining a lot of the characters for newcomers, even if they weren't very accurate.
This show honestly did introduce to me to a lot of Marvel superheroes whenever I was little. This was the show that also introduced me to the guardians of the galaxy before the movie even came out I’m in the Band was a classic Disney XD show tho. Now I gotta rewatch
It's funny that for me the voice acting was so good because I live in Brazil and brazilian voice actors totally nailed this show, and I don't know how much creative liberty they had but I am sure some of the lines weren't that goofy as shown in this video.
nossa eu assisti o desenho dublado e legendado e não sei se é a nostalgia falando pq eu assisti dublado quando criança, mas dublado é bem melhor e mais engraçado
Yeah, this happens regularly lol. The brazilian dub is REALLY good and there's plenty of movies and series that are terrible in english, but actually amazing in Portuguese. The ogs pick famous people to do a mediocre job, but since Brazil hires based on quality over fame, they save the show by giving them lovable voices and actual personality.
The premise was solid. The idea of an already experienced Spidey who has been a hero for years catching SHIELD's attention and putting Peter in a similar position to the Avengers in the MCU (before Winter Soldier) was interesting, and it gave an excuse to have him take on villains he wouldn't otherwise (Doom, Loki, etc.), while still having him fight smaller threats on a regular basis. Doc Ock's design is horrifyingly great (and perfectly fits the way his character acts here), and most of the other designs are pretty good. Plus having a bunch of different marvel characters outside of the ones Spidey usually interacts with was cool (and pulling from different parts of the Marvel universe is one of the things that made EMH so good). The only problem is that everything else ranges from just alright to plain bad. As for the actors that were in I'm in the Band, they were the least entertaining of the main cast. None of the jokes in that show were well written, but the other 3 main leads made them funny with their hammy delivery. But instead we got the 2/5ths that weren't good Also the scene where Knightmare makes Peter experience Uncle Ben's death again was fantastic and in a shorter series (like 12 episodes) that scene alone could have outweighed all its flaws
@@theamazingspooderman2697 It could have been better though, it could have done so much more regarding the other characters. Imagine if they could have set up Ava's origin-story and the pressure she is putting on herself, or actually developed Sam as a character instead of just wasting his scene on a gag. Danny's scene is pretty okay though.
I forgot most things about this show. The only things I remembered were Sandman, because he's my favourite Spiderman villain, and Knightmare. Seeing Uncle Ben just really stuck with me.
If there's one thing I hate most about this show, it's how they just take away what makes Spiderman, Spiderman. His struggles. He doesn't have to worry about his secret identity, he doesn't have to worry about his family being harmed, he doesn't have to worry about anything because they immediately placed him in Shield. Of course, there's other times where Spidey or even other Spidermen has been put in a big team, but those still kept his struggles, in fact they added more at times. Ex, Avengers. They did perfect with the struggles part, and then added another struggle with the whole team considering him too young and inexperienced to do anything useful, which is a bit of bullying but also reasonable, unlike the team of people he leads in this show, which just bully him for no absolute reason.
If there's one villain change I did like, it would have to be Scorpion. Not only for the probably obvious Mortal Kombat reference with the Scorpion name and the chain with kunai, but because it would actually probably be a very interesting villain if made new. A Spidey Villain that's on par with Spidey's speed and fighting style would make an interesting fight if they ever decide to actually write him well.
Bro this just isn’t true, most of season 3-the end is him struggling with high school and stuff like that. If we had every bad thing that happened to Spider-Man it wouldn’t be a kids show.
33:30 HOLY SHIT I REMEMBER "I'm in the Band"! I remember liking it as a kid and that the three rockers were pretty funny. Can't remember anything about the teen actors though so there's your answer I guess.
I was actually impressed that they were able to make a decent marvel animated universe. We got Avengers, Agents of SMASH, Guardians of the galaxy, and spider-man. Pretty good
I thought that perhaps combining the characters of Spectacular's Eddie Brock and Flash Thompson could be a way to condense the character of Agent Venom. Have him lose his legs in a Spidey related accident and have his adoration of Spidey go the other way into absolute hatred for failing him. Then he becomes an Anti-Hero out of spite until he's humbled and grows as a character throughout the show, it's an idea I had running on my mind for a while. As for his relationship with Peter before he became bonded to Venom, I imagine he was friends with him to help with his homework, and temporarily escape from his abusive father by hanging out with him. Also I just realized that Shattered Dimensions was the closest we got to a crossover between Spectacular Spidey and HvW Deadpool.
Thats actually a great idea, excpet for the relationship to Peter, just let them have the same relationship that they have in Spectacular: former best friends turned into rivals, nerd vs jock dynamic
@@oldmanlogan9616 That is their relationship in the present. I was refering to before that, when they were kids. For context: In the comics, Flash Thompson grew up with an abusive father, and he envied Peter because his uncles gave him a seemingly perfect childhood, and so Flash bullied Peter out of spite. In my version, he befriended Peter and started hangeding out with him to escape that. It something that unfortunately happens very often in real life, and I think it would be interesting to tackle that.
What hurt ultimate Spider-Man is they had to many characters at the end. It's why they had to pretty much dump the main side characters. They dumped white tiger, power man , iron fist and the like so they could add agent Venom, squirrel girl and the like. maybe it would have been better if they tried a hero's for hire tv show with iron fist and power man as a spin-off. Maybe use White tiger as the shield contact if shield wants power man and iron fist to look into something without shield getting blamed for it. Nova could have went to the guardians or something
I think the problem was that Ultimate tried to be a Teen Titans AND Brave and the Bold show all in one. It should have picked one influence and stuck with it- the hodgepodging of both just left everything too confusing. Still, at least Clark Gregg got more to do as Coulson.
@@benwasserman8223true. Tom Kenny was also great as Doc Ock. Even the actors for Fitz and Simmons in the Shield TV series got to voice their animated versions
There’s a good chance that Sam was made for the show but debuted in the comics before the show aired, like Kaldur from Young Justice. I say this because Sam’s first appearance was in late 2011 and the show debuted early 2012, plus Sam used Richard Rider’s design in the show until he was given the black helmet from the comics later. Meaning the comic writers saw this characterization and actively rejected it when they added him to the comics. Good on them.
You know, when you were discussing the flaws and issues with this show, I'm surprised you didn't bring up that one episode in season 1 titled, "Doomed" (which was literally just the third episode for the show), where Peter Parker/Spider-Man, wanting to impress Nick Fury, decides that the best way to impress Nick Fury is by going after and kidnapping/abducting/capturing motherfu***** Doctor Doom of all people and bring him directly onto the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier... Like bro..., do I even need to explain to anyone why that's completely out of character for Peter Parker to think that that's a good idea/plan, let alone for him to actually go through with it...
Another weird episode is the Halloween episode with Jessie from the live action Disney show. It’s weird cause, the same characters from this show crossed over with Phineas and Ferb meaning the entire Disney universe is connected to MARVEL
I kinda took this personally. I really like ultimate Spider-Man. But I just went back and watched spectacular and your absolutely right there’s no comparison. I think at the time I didn’t realize it got canceled to put out ultimate. Great video.
THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT KID ACRACHIND IS BAD. I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CALL MILES KID ACRACHNID. MILES MORALES IS SPIDER MAN! NO NICKNAMES! MILES IS SPIDERMAN!
Honestly despite loving this show as a kid, imo they really should have just adapted the comics into the show. Not only would it be easier instead of creating new stories but also get the fans on board too.
That's what we all thought it was going to be when they announced it. They even marketed it as such when the show was announced. Then they actually showed the show...which revealed it had basically nothing to do with the comics other than some of the art direction and the name. Definitely not a good way to get people interested in seeing the show, especially after people were still sore about Spectacular being cancelled for this. Fuck, a animated adaptation of the Ultimate comics would be *so* good. Especially if it aimed for a more teen/young adult demographic like the MTV show did.
@@marvelfannumber1 hell since some stuff from ultimate has been used for Many of the Spider-Man adaptations I'm surprised it hasn't just been given a straight adpatation
That’s what I was expecting them to do, to loosely follow the comics and tone certain themes down for it to be for older kids and teens like the 2k3 ninja turtles show. And I was super hype when I read they had Bendis,Paul Dini, and creator Ben 10 & Generator Rex on board. With those big names, you’d think they’d do no wrong.
I'm surprised how problematic this show actually is to many, I genuinely enjoyed how they potray the character, story progress, artstyle and comedy back then, the comedy actually got me good and artstyle is perhaps among best for animated series One of thing for sure as hell is Iron Fist is more likeable than his MCU counterpart, his MCU counterpart is s__t
Same. I used to love this show. Only thing that bugged me were designs and stuff changing whenever new movies came out. Like Starlord for example was completely different. Also I loved the crossovers while retaining him as technically the main character.
I also thought it was really good and grew up watching it with my little brother. I recently rewatched it and sure it falls off after the 3rd or 4th season but it still isn’t bad, just not super engaging plot at times. I think it gets way too much hate because people really liked spectacular.
I feel like people are using the show as an outlet for pent up aggression and stress. Entire video all I heard was bitch bitch bitch. Kept waiting for the defense to start and this guy to stop talking about how much he hate watched the series.
it is thanks to this show that i got to know a lot of comic book characters that i never would have known otherwise as a kid, i still remember when thanks to this show i first saw ghost-spider , also its funny how this show has some episodes which are exactly the plot prototypes of into the spider verse, with Peter Parker , Miles morales and Gwen Stacy teaming together from different universes
This show was from a weird era, but it was genuinely entertaining, and the odd references and cameos made me appreciate it. This version of Spider-verse was fun as well. The 3/4 part special had some great versions of Spider-Man.
I really liked electro in web of shadows him caring for his sister and just having insane rage all the time was pretty cool. And making him kill the symbiot after his venomised boss was pretty cool
My favorite aprt about this show, was 1000% Tom Kennys rendition of Doctor Octopus, who always sounded as though he was struggling with complete and utter madness.
Bendis Ultimate run is almost perfect for a TV adaptation, especially since they could use so many other Marvel characters. I don’t understand why they chose to go with this instead
I totally agree, it would’ve been beautiful to see the ultimate comics truly adapted, and lose the super over the top childish tone of the actual show, I believe if it would’ve been done right it could’ve been just as great as the spectacular series
Jeph Loeb didn't want them "wasting their time" doing anything intelligent, he just wanted quick easy product that little kids would enjoy above all else.
Bendis can’t write anything except street-level shit to save his life. You raise the stakes any higher than a mugger and his writing is just insufferable.
@@marko-gj1uj can they just actually adapt 616 peter instead of adapting ultimate peter over and over and over again caus eim so tired of whimpy insecure uncertain kid peter
Well from what the other comments have said, is that I've enjoyed it as a kid (which it was aimed for). But even it's tone doesn't please the youngsters as well.
I love this show, I've re-watched it so many times. It kinda hurt when he said the humor could only be enjoyed by 6 year olds. I'm in my 20s. I know it's stupid and has many flaws, but with my depression and anxiety it's nice to put in something a little more silly and easy to follow.
I love both spectacular and ultimate spider man, each for their own reasons, like spectacular was a good plot focused show which still kept spider man true to his nature, while ultimate was more of an adventure ride with the quippy, 4th wall breaking, teenage spidey which did have a few minor plots and slow character development, but overall could be watched from any episode without getting very confused, and helped see more of spider man along with different Marvel characters as it was more for entertainment than plot.
They could’ve done some awesome stuff if they actually made the Symbiote… be the Symbiote. They could’ve explained why the Symbiote reacts differently to Peter is that Peter stabilized since it came from his own blood. They could’ve had his team break him out of the Symbiote not by punching him but talking to him in a similar way Peter convinces several characters in the series to stop doing what they’re doing, eg: Peter calming down White Tiger in the Kraven episode. They could’ve had an arc where Peter leaves shield for longer than 5 minutes because of the Symbiote.
I believe the DP episode shows it the most: while previous show had some light 4th wall breaking, this serie has peter going full deadpool, and that undercut every single episode there's also the problem with the "ultimate" branding, the idea to do the classic work with a new twist, rather than go more in either direction. a bit more work would have done for a lot more mileage, and some other dubs actually manage to push a bit more soul in it, but there are a bit too many corners cut off here
The funniest thing about Ultimate Spider-man is that it was the project that started the Marvel-Disney animated universe, but the last few seasons of the other shows take place in the Marvel's Spider-man animated universe. It's like a stab in the back for Ultimate.

And even then, all these shows just can't escape the shadows of X-Men and Spider-Man: The Animated Series.

The one moment from the show that actually made me laugh is the season finale, when Peter referred to the other heroes as "his family", even though they never had a single bonding moment before then. Best joke in the series.

Yeah! This version of Spider-Man is too reliant on others.

I know it's obvious, but Spectacular has the best Electro and I'd love to see someone take that setup and run with it.
And Sam doesn't need to be 100% original he just has to be a person, not the shadow of the character he's trying to be
It's actually amazing how bad they screwed up Nova. If I didn't read champions I would have hated Nova in the comics as well.

But instead we got the 2/5ths that weren't good
Also the scene where Knightmare makes Peter experience Uncle Ben's death again was fantastic and in a shorter series (like 12 episodes) that scene alone could have outweighed all its flaws
that episode with Knightmare was one of my fav episodes
@@theamazingspooderman2697 It could have been better though, it could have done so much more regarding the other characters. Imagine if they could have set up Ava's origin-story and the pressure she is putting on herself, or actually developed Sam as a character instead of just wasting his scene on a gag. Danny's scene is pretty okay though.
I forgot most things about this show. The only things I remembered were Sandman, because he's my favourite Spiderman villain, and Knightmare.
Seeing Uncle Ben just really stuck with me.

@@Yesiamachicken Mate, you have a Roblox picture. You're not just a child, you're a fetus 😂
@@yourweirdplantthis is just clear nonsense and yapping bro

Pretty good
All of those shows were super mid to down right bad, what are you talking about?
@@senorsnout4417 Well I haven't watched them in years so
@@senorsnout4417 You can't let people have opinions? 😂
And then they kicked Ultimate out for some stupid reason.
@@senorsnout4417 there's this thing called an opinion and people have them bro.

I kinda took this personally. I really like ultimate Spider-Man. But I just went back and watched spectacular and your absolutely right there’s no comparison. I think at the time I didn’t realize it got canceled to put out ultimate. Great video.

No, he's not.
@minniemoniekookie but there can be his son will take his title one day
Honestly despite loving this show as a kid, imo they really should have just adapted the comics into the show.

Ultimate Spider-Man is not the best. But I can say It’s definitely better than the 2017 cartoon.
I'm surprised how problematic this show actually is to many, I genuinely enjoyed how they potray the character, story progress, artstyle and comedy back then, the comedy actually got me good and artstyle is perhaps among best for animated series
One of thing for sure as hell is Iron Fist is more likeable than his MCU counterpart, his MCU counterpart is s__t
This show was my childhood, and what made me love Spiderman
As a kid I loved this show, and it still holds a place in my heart
I’m just happy this show got me interested in other characters through the marvel universe. Then again, so did Superhero Squad.
I was actually 7 when I saw this, and it become my favourite show to watch before school because of the effects they used.
Bendis Ultimate run is almost perfect for a TV adaptation, especially since they could use so many other Marvel characters. I don’t understand why they chose to go with this instead
MCU should adapt this
I totally agree, it would’ve been beautiful to see the ultimate comics truly adapted, and lose the super over the top childish tone of the actual show, I believe if it would’ve been done right it could’ve been just as great as the spectacular series

34:14 I'm still pissed at what they did with Spider-Girl. At least we have Across the Spider-Verse to look forward to.
I like that in the 2018 game the writers also had Electro follow along with Spidey's jokes
I believe the DP episode shows it the most: while previous show had some light 4th wall breaking, this serie has peter going full deadpool, and that undercut every single episode
there's also the problem with the "ultimate" branding, the idea to do the classic work with a new twist, rather than go more in either direction.
a bit more work would have done for a lot more mileage, and some other dubs actually manage to push a bit more soul in it, but there are a bit too many corners cut off here
I read DP as Danny Phantom and got really confused for a second. 😂
I really think that spider-man should just leave all the 4th wall breaking to Deadpool
