He left Northwest and was eventually Delta's CEO when the Delta/Northwest merger happened. If you order a Boeing you just join a massive waiting list, followed by terrible uncertainty over groundings and shit quality. Only 38 737s are produced each month. Only 5 787s are produced each month (!). Because of quality problems. And Airbus' are just better aircraft - more efficient and also more popular with passengers and crew.

The A220 offer 2-3 seating which allows for a larger PAX capacity without stretching the tube too much. DELTA has been building a lot of additional operational flexibility by radically reducing the number of aircraft families (and corresponding pilot and cabin crew pools) in their fleet, with a few more to go. There is no need for DELTA to "lufthansadize" their fleet and start again buying everything what is around.
