Making Cold Process Aloe Vera Soap - Harvesting the Leaves and Gel - Full Soap Making Recipe

  • Опубликовано: 28 май 2024
  • In this video, I demonstrate my easy method for extracting the gel from aloe vera leaves and share my recipe and technique for making aloe vera soap using the cold process soap method.
This method uses fresh aloe vera gel as a full water replacement in the soap recipe. You can also blend some fresh aloe gel into your soap making oils and make your lye solution with water if you would like a more straightforward process. If I blend my aloe into my oils, I make the lye solution with water but use a 1:5:1 water to lye ratio. I have used 2.5:1 liquid to lye ratio in the video demonstration recipe to maximise the amount of aloe in the finished soap.
    Recipe details
My mould used in this video is 22cm long, 6.5cm wide and 5.5cm deep
It holds 822g of soap batter in total.
For this soap, I used the following ingredients:
    80% olive oil - 432g
    15% coconut oil - 81g
    5% castor oil - 27g
Aloe gel/water 182g (2.5:1 water to lye ratio - in the video I used 192g due to the aloe gel being weighed as ice cubes, I also strained out the aloe pulp from the lye solution)
Sodium hydroxide 73g (5% superfat calculated into the recipe)
Blue indigo powder mixed with some water for the colour.
Essential oils - 22g in total (4% of base oils)
    11g tea tree
    8g peppermint
    3g cedar
    Method as demonstrated in video
New to soap making? This is important!
Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Yes totally agree re music. Very happy to have found you Elly. Some youtubers do have just soft background music instead of speaking at all. With the ingredients and instructions slowly appearing on the screen, that works too if they get the speed of the written info just right. And choice of music is quite important too. No headbangers please🙉.but both music and voice simultaneously has made me switch off some youtubers.
Thanks Elly for your calm and very clear way of passing on your knowledge. I have only recently discovered you so am going through your videos when I can.👌

Love your content, it's easy to follow as a beginner and very detailed. Also, I must point out, that I highly value you pointing out that you're not sure wether or not the aloe actually still do their magic after being in contact with the lye. That's refreshingly honest and solid in a world of click-baitey cosmetics influencers. Would always refer to your content for real info.

Love your videos, I’ve been making Aloe soap for years, I blend my aloe in my Vita mix on juice blend then I strain it before I freeze it. Also I infuse all my olive oils with calendula for the added benefits. You can infuse with any herb. One time I had some of the green leaf left in and the bars streaked beautifully, totally unexpected.

    • @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
      @EllysEverydaySoapMaking  3 года назад +3

Thanks for that Donna, yes, there are SO many ways to make aloe soap! I actually tested the difference between straining the juice before and after adding the sodium hydroxide, and found it way easier to strain after it was made into a lye solution. Somehow it seems to separate the pulp from the juice so much easier! The calendula sounds lovely. I adore calendula soap. Actually I'm planning a video on that soon :)

So I made my aloe soap, but I used a silicone rectangle mold rather than using paper as you did. I left it to saponify for 5 days and the bottom was still very soft, but I was anxious to take it out, I should have waited, it was a gooy mess. But I mashed it back together and let it sit for another day before slicing it.
I think for this particular soap it is better to use the parchment paper instead of silicone. 😊

Thank you, yes it was funny how they chirped up just as I was filming. We have a lot of native birds here, they can get pretty rowdy!

Thanks for sharing Elly, can't wait to try this. Aloe freely available here in Jbay South Africa. With your beautiful glowing, radiant complexion there must be great benefits☺️ Please share your routine sometime.

Thanks Kathy. My skin was a bit flushed that day! I just wash my face with pure, unscented and uncoloured castile soap like this ruclips.net/video/MzDZts9hjKw/видео.html and use a plain, unscented moisturiser and night cream. I also wear sunscreen every day, my skin is so white it burns really easily and I've had some issues with skin cancer from too much surfing and sailing in my teens!

Love your recipe, I’ve tried this several times and thought I’d done it wrong because the lye solution was cold.

What a great video! I harvest my Zingiber zerumbet aka shampoo ginger plant once a year and your idea of the ice cube trays is ingenious! I always have leftover juice and not enough time to finish my shampoos. Ive lived at my new home for 4 years now and recently started harvesting this plant. I fertilized it this year and I have a huge crop this year and I’m going to make soap this year. Your video is so helpful! Thank you!
