- Harvesting and Curing GARLIC for LONG-TERM Storage
We grow and store a year’s worth of garlic- no root cellar needed! Here in my zone 4 Wisconsin climate, garlic is planted in fall and overwinters in the ground. We harvest it at the end of July, store it and eat it fresh all year until the following year’s harvest.

I don't use RUclips much but I was upset because I thought I lost this video. This is our first year growing and harvesting garlic and this is the best video I have seen. Thanks so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Howbto know "when" to harvest though?
I talk about that towards the beginning of the video. 😊
I’m a first time garlic harvester. This helped me. Quick and easy to understand tutorial. Much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
As long time gardener and a "new" garlic grower I really appreciated the knowledge and how well it was presented! thank you
We always leave 4-6 inches on hardneck garlic. It seems to help them store longer.
Very informative video. Thx for making it. Couple questions if you don't mind:
1. Any tricks for knowing when it's dry enough after hanging for a few weeks? Just cut the stock off 1 bulb maybe and check if it's dry?
2. Does it matter which direction you hang them? Bulbs up or down?
1. Yes-- good idea. It shouldn't have any green in it.
2. No, it doesn't matter.
for storage we use the legs cut from nylon stockings. Place about 6 heads and knot the stocking twice, add another 6 heads and follow the double knotting till you run out of room. the reason for the two knots between groups is that you can cut between the knots, and everything is still contained in the nylons. Works well to hang the garlic in a unheated storage area under the stairs.
In addition, at the end of their storage "life" when they are a bit dried and wrinkled, take the cloves, skin, cut up to a uniform size and dehydrate in a low oven or dehydrator. Use a blade type coffee grinder to find the dehydrated chips to your own garlic powder. Works great and nothing is thrown out.
Extremely helpful! I'm on my first garlic harvest right now :) so far, so good!
Excellent tutorial. Clear, concise, and exactly what I needed. Thank you! Earned a sub.
Thanks for explaining the whole process concisely.
Thanks for the educating advise.
I'm so glad I just found your channel! I'm in zone 5 eastern Colorado, this year the grasshopper plague has absolutely destroyed my garden, even in the greenhouse, it's all a disaster except for my garlic! I'm interested that you grow softneck as well as hardneck, here the softnecks just don't get enough something, sun or what I don't know. You channel is great and thank you for the great videography and growing guide! Do you fertilize your garlic?
Thanks so much for your kind words! We don't fertilize, no. I heard the grasshoppers have been awful this year, ugh.
it looks like you are hanging it greens side downwards. Opposite of what everyone else does.
why?
heads up, you can grind the leaves and use them as powder garlic leaves. It's not as strong as the cloves so it will give you a light garlic taste. No doubt, you will taste the garlic. You can also eat them while they are still green. great for soups.
The green leaves or the dead ones?
@@amyheath8261 both. When you dry the leaves, they look dead. Once brown, nice and dry, grind them down with a grinder, I just finished doing some. They are a tad more fluffy than the garlic powder. The leaves are not as strong as the cloves but nonetheless, you will still taste the garlic, just not as potent which in some cases it’s good!
Make sure they are completely dry because even if a tiny bit moist it will not grind them to their smallest form. I made that mistake a couple days ago.
You can use the green leaves for fresh garlic flavor. You can cut them up, put them in a jar and shove them in the fridge. Won’t last as long as the dry powdered onces but you will have it really fresh, and you will taste it stronger than the powdered garlic leaves. Again, cloves are strongest for flavor! 😁
@@MrJaxparadizethank you. I just pulled up my garlic yesterday and was wondering if I could use the leaves. Once they’re fully dry I will!
@@amyheath8261 I will say that when they’re green, you can’t taste it really strong. Again, not as strong as the cloves but it’s a good competitor! 👍🏽
@@MrJaxparadize SCAPES have pretty strong flavor!❤
Precisely what I needed to know. Your counsel was clear, concise, to the point, and very, very helpful. Thank you so much!
A nice clear, fluent and pertinent commentary - congratulations on avoiding teenage-speak. I like - and am envious of - your drying arrangement. I wonder if Wisconsin has a less humid climate - here in Bristol, UK (40in annual rainfall, Zone 9b equivalent) it nearly always takes longer drying - after 2 weeks the outside layer will be papery, but the inner layers of the stem are still very juicy.
I watched several videos to learn about how to harvest my garlic. This video gave me the most useful and clearest information. Thank you!
Glad to hear, thank you!
I like your paper bag trick that's good
Best explanation I have found. Thank you!
Great tutorial, very clear plus I saw many mistakes I've been making! I'm looking forward to a better stored crop now. I cut most of my scapes but missed a few. What are good curing practices and uses for the bulbils if not needed for planting? Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! 🥰
I haven't ever left scapes to get bulbils, so not sure on that.
good job
Wow - brilliantly explained
This is so simple! I think IL is zone 5. What do recommend for planting here? I’m new to gardening but I have large 72in raised cedar beds I made for this year. Did you hAbe special fertilizer or anything to keep pests off that is organic?
Im in zone 5 as well. Once the garlic is planted in the fall, I have had great success covering them with shredded dead leaves. We tried numerous coverings but for some reason the dead leaves are the garlics favorite winter blanket 😊 I may fertilize once in the late spring with any organic fertilizer you like. Not many pests go near garlic or onions, so if you can, you may want to companion plant as well knowing that!! Best of Luck!! 🎉
Fantastic video, my bulbs are ready for storing and now I can do it like a pro! 😍
How do you decide which ones are used for seed?
The biggest bulbs are saved for seed.
new subscriber here and first-time garlic grower. I came across some Ukranian garlic last fall to buy and consume and I decided to try my luck at growing it. To my surprise doing exactly what the lady and the shop told me, I have 4 very nice-looking plants. The necks all curly-Q'd and I had 4 very large (scapes?) on top that looked like a bunch of seeds packed in them with flower buds. I trimmed those off. I don't quite have 4 dead leaves peeling on the bottoms of the plants yet, I think I need to wait just a bit longer. Does any of this sound like I got this?..or am I doing something wrong?....your video on drying the garlic is going to help me greatly. I know it's only 4 plants, but it was sure fun growing it for the first time. And I LOVE eating them!...I live in Northern Michigan by the way. Please advise...thanks a ton.
Sounds like you're doing great! If it's been a wet year where you are, I'd pull one to see how it looks when 3-4 leaves are dry.

This is one of the best garlic video's I have seen. As a rookie I need to learn so much yet and your presentation was very helpful. Thank you ❤
Glad it was helpful! 💗💗
@@wholefedhomestead 🙏😊❤️
So informative! True to your style-you are so thorough when giving information. I wish I would have seen this before harvesting my garlic. I totally just pulled it out of the ground instead of digging it.
Thanks for your kind words 💗
How do you get good air flow in a closet? Do you set a small fan in there?
For storage, it's more about just not having them closed up in something where they'll mold. This particular closet does have a slotted door, so there is air exchange.
Awesome work!
I have 0 idea which type I stuck where, while planting, oops 😬.
Just noticed in the comment below my previous post that they use the ground leaves. I have never tried that as I don't generally remove the leaves while drying. The scapes however are excellent and definitely recommend using those in cooking.
It's hard to find a cool and dry spot to cure them in June in Va. I don't have a covered porch just a couple of sheds😢
Perfect video
Can you wash it after you harvest it just before drying it or is it like potatoes and needs to keep its protective layer?
No need to wash - keep it DRY
Definitely don't get it wet.
Thanks for sharing. I am planting garlic this fall and saved this video for next summer. I really appreciate the quick overview and the video showing everything.
I grew garlic for the first time this past year and really appreciate the detailed instructions on how to dry (and know when it's done - lol!). Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you this will be my first garlic crop❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
🥰
I HUNG MINE WITH THE LEAVES UP,
because that is the PROPER WAY TO DO IT. Don't follow her practice!!
This is my first year growing garlic and this was good to the point info...
Great video! Thanks for sharing :)
thank you very informative cheers
Thanks. Thumbs up and subscribed
Helped with all questions, thanks👍
Very clear and to the point. Thank you
This is so helpful!! Thank you! ❤ I made several mistakes last year. Now I clearly understand why and what to do this year.
So glad it was helpful!
What is your watering method, how many days per week do you water and what quantity of water (by the gallon) per 10' row of garlic planted 6" apart?
We never water- it typically rains here enough.
great video. thank you.
Thank you! Great video
Great timing! I hope to pull mine tomorrow 😊
Great. Straight forward to the point
Closet in the house? Im wondering if they draw anyone in for snacking over winter? Great to see gardening tips from someone near our zone thanks!!
Nope, no problems with mice, etc when storing.
Thanks for the quick and concise video. Big help!
You're welcome!
Thank you for the information!
Hi, thanks. question, do you ever use some of the leaves for cooking?
No, that would take energy away from the bulb to take the leaves.
This video was very helpful. Thank you.
I'm so glad!
What types of garlic do you grow? And a good recommendation on where to order to start a garlic rotation?
We grow quite a few but my favorite is Majestic. Most I got from a friend, sorry.
That’s the way to do it!
What time of year do the leaves normally start to die? I just pulled some that looked ready (it's May 30) and they had no bulbs at all.
That really depends on where you live but for me in Wisconsin we harvest early August.
I'm in zone 7b. Mountains of VA.
I start them beginning of Nov and I just harvested them yesterday June 8th when half the leaves were brown. I got medium sized hard neck bulbs.
Thank you :)
can you please do a clip on planting garlic?
I have a full video on planting garlic

Nice
Looks good
Thank you!
How many seeds do you plant for one year of consumption plus planting?
About 150, and we’re a 2 person household.
I grow 800 use about 500 sell the rest.
@@pilsplease7561clearly no vampires around your house lol. no, it's healing. you should try fermented garlic or black garlic
Excellent!! 🧄
Thank you! 😃
Your organization is goals! Thank you for all the helpful info!
SPADE not SHOVEL
I must admit I don’t know the finer details in America , however, here in Australia , the implement he was digging the garlic up with would be called a shovel - a spade is normally a short handled “ shovel “ . If that is not the case in America , perhaps the lady is Australian .
Shovel
Shovel in Australia not spade..
Shovel, Spade . Tomato, Tomatoe WHATEVER ! 😂
Jees does it matter its the garlic that's the topic here
Great video first time watching after I found you on Insta. Love your channel!! Thank you
