Every time I see your hauls I’m amazed. Evidently I’m one of those people that should be buying from other people. My “garden “got three green beans, four tomatoes, and one okra this year. It’s time to plant another season’s plants now
I have grown stiff neck garlic for 5 years in Iowa. The cool thing about growing garlic is how hands off it is. And we use the plants from that year for the next year. We grow 96 heads of garlic. Each heads produces 5-6 cloves. So we set aside 18 plants to plant in the fall that will grow till next summer. We started this process from one bulb we bought in Galena IL. That year we grew 6, then 12, then 24, then 48, then 96 plants. It’s amazing how so much can come from so little. We find 70 or so bulbs gets us through the year and I thought I used a lot of garlic. I don’t know how you can use 578 plants! But I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Wow all from 1 bulb!! I just planted about 12 in January (I'm in Ireland) and just pulled up 4 bulbs today. Going to put in loads in November and can't wait.
WOW, so much garlic!! I just ordered some to try as I have never done it before! For labeling I bought white plastic nursery markers I bought the taller ones I think 6 or 8 inches. I attach the markers higher so it is easier for me to see, if it is on the ground they are hard to find as everything gets taller and they get buried!! On the cattle panel arch I stick on on the post facing the variety and in ground I like using one of the metal straight electric fencing poles and I attach it at the top. This also makes it easier for me to make notes on my garden testing chart (I got the idea from The Seasonal Homestead). I put it into a spreadsheet for myself and hang it on a clipboard in the kitchen so I can mark how much the produce weighs (I am not great at this) but at least if I can mark that we got 10 squashes it helps to know how much we got, if we like the variety, if it did well for us and want to grow it again or not! The clipboard helped a lot as I can take it out to the garden if I want too! Next year, I want to add my garden plan on there too so I can plan things better but we will see I am trying to start a garden journal so I don't forget the varieties of fruit trees/bushes I already have planted.
Can you PLEASE tell me what month YOU start planting your garlic. And around what month you harvest them. I was so amazed to see your garlic harvest. So glad I found your channel.
You’re a breath of fresh air ..I planted some garlic first time this year and but it was only a pot of them and I haven’t harvested.. some wonderful ideas and as well and when to take them out and I thank you and I love you enthusiasm …that’s great …thank you
We have been growing our own garlic since 2000. I bought 1 pound of garlic from a young man at the International Plowing Match (for $1.00) that year in Elora, Ontario, Canada. He taught me the fundamentals of growing and have been growing it ever since. We usually grow about 50 plants which is enough for us and family members. We use our own heads to plant the next year's crop in October which we cover with a very thick layer of straw to protect it during our long, cold winters here in midwestern Ontario,, Canada.

I've never grown garlic before but I'm wanting to. I can't believe you planted over 500 for the first year, or any year lol! You are going to be so busy for awhile. I'm anxious to see what you do with it. I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to grow it. I'm thinking in one of my containers so that it won't interfere with my spring planting.
I grew garlic for the first time this year and planted it in one of my raised beds. Nothing seemed to bother it (deer or rabbits) so this fall I am going to plant it out in my landscape so I’m not using up one of my raised beds.

The soil here is naturally extremely fertile and the season long and fairly perfect for agriculture so most people grow their own vegetables, roots, fruits and berries et cetera and this is our habit too, but I don't seem able to grow garlic and I love garlic! I need to learn a bit more. I planted garlic cloves in the autumn and in the summer they all are one, onion-shaped clove. I left them in the ground. We'll see how they develop (if they do). I had no idea there are garlics that have different growing stages as explained in this video. Very interesting.

Great job! I grew 275 heads of garlic. Harvest is usually 1st wk of August. This year, scapes and heads of garlic were a month early. Regardless, the harvest is always so much fun because you really never know how big each head of garlic will be. Enjoy your bounty!!

Becky, your energy is so contagious. Love your ideas, info and all your videos that I've seen so far. How about dehydrating some garlic also. Love it in dips for chips. Looking forward to see what you do with your Garlic harvest. Thanks girl, you're awesome 👌.
Most of all her info on garlic is accurate. Elephant garlic is not really garlic but belongs to onion family. I grew garlic for years, around 1 acre at a time. It takes 9 months to grow it. So keep this in mind. I stuck with hardnecks as the taste was amazing. I sold it locally for $20/lb. It's a lot of work on harvest weekend. Family helpers made it doable. Love that plant!
This is why I love watching opposite season channels, so funny to see you harvesting what I have just planted (2 weeks ago - albeit a bit later than I would like)! Unfortunately I had no budget to buy seed garlic this year, but I did have the left over cloves from last years (previous property) elephant garlic harvest to plant - can't wait for January when they will be ready to harvest (assuming they sprout!). Slow roasted elephant garlic is THE. BEST. THING. EVER!!
Farming in its vital role as a food supplier is correctly known as one of the most dignified forms of employment, plus it's useful and conducive for good health. Keep it on dear
Although it is time consuming I totally recommend doing the garlic and honey ferment!! I have been waiting for the year mark before getting into a jar of it. By the smells that come out of the jar while it ferments made me have to starte more jars from this years harvest to preserve the same way.
Brilliant harvest! We had pickled elephant garlic last year, it's so good! Broken into cloves then pickled with any kind of spices you like, it's kind of like a mild pickled onion but a really unique taste and a good crunch :) Don't forget to save your biggest heads to plant back out in the autumn!
@@aliciaschultz309 in Alaska we need to plant by August but my seed ships September 1st...lol so I might squeeze it in just on the tail end of planting season here.
Wow, what an amazing harvest for your first year!! The little bulbs that you found growing on the outside of some of the garlic are called corms. Plant them in a separate bed. They will produce a single bulb next year and then a big bulb with multiple cloves the follow year. I recently found your channel and absolutely love your energy.
Fantastic garlic harvest! I would not recommend freezing garlic. It really lose the garlic flavor. After curing remember to save your largest garlic heads to plant this fall. The larger the clove you plant the larger the garlic head will grow. I just love your enthusiasm and happy gardening!
This may be a bit of a fangirl moment, but you are my favorite RUclipsr! It is for many reasons (some silly, some legit) that I say this. I feel a bit of a kindred spirit in you. I would love to figure out a way to collaborate! Anyway, much respect, great job, and I look forward to many more videos from you. ❤
I grew garlic for the first time last year, 4 different varieties all hard neck. I grew a total of 141 bulbs. I had great soil and soaked them in seaweed solution the night before planting. This year I have 290 cloves planted and 13 elephant garlics. Elephant garlic is not a true garlic and is more from the leek family. I hung mine in bunches of 6 and my shed looked like the hanging gardens of garlic. You’ll definitely not have vampires visiting 😂
Caroline, would you mind sharing what preserving methods you used for the 141 heads and how long it lasted you? I am trying to gauge how much I should be growing to have enough for a year.
@@katiejones9106 I hung it to dry. Then when the stalks had dried off, I cut the stalks and the roots off. And cleaned them up. I gave away a bit as whole bulbs and then the rest I left in a dark dry area. I had enough to plant for the next year. To work out how much you need to grow, work out roughly how much you go through in a week then multiply that by 52. If you want to grow more for family and friends add another 20% - 30% Make sure you have good soil, plenty of manure, compost and good drainage. You’ll only get good results with anything you grow with good soil.
@@whatshername369 I gave some away, I sent 18 cloves to m,y friend who gave me 2 varieties to grow. Her crop failed so I helped her by replacing what she gave me and a bit more. I also grew a variety she didn’t have so she got some of that as well. I have had people wanting to buy from me so I’m growing extra to sell this year. As well as have some for myself.
Becky, I found you in the last month and subscribed. Thank you for all you are sharing. Thank you for educating me (a former teacher) in things not of my world. I’m as excited as you are!! Haha. Can’t wait to make our first raised beds. My yard is super small so will be planting the most eaten for our household. I’m in 9b zone and it is WET here so waiting for it to dry to build and prep the ground. Thx for taking us on your journey!!
I’ve only ordered “seed” garlic once & am actually considering ordering again this year. When I went to one of the local nurseries, who’ve been in business for decades, the owner told me “don’t waste your money on seed garlic, just buy a bunch of garlic from the grocery store & plant that” Then each year, I saved enough of my garlic, as my own seeds This year’s garlic crop was a flop. All my fault. We got that 2 week deep freeze & I lost most of it. I should’ve put a heavy mulch on it
I guess seed garlic is guaranteed not to have a virus that can live in your soil if you buy form the store... Sorry for the late reply! but i have heard that same thing
I just stumbled upon this video. I disagree with just using store bought garlic. I've been growing garlic for years. Started out using grocery store garlic. The bulbs were not impressive at all. The flavor was generic. Then I started buying seed garlic online and that was so much larger than store bought. The resulting garlic bulbs from seed garlic cloves were so much larger as well. I am now at a point where I save my largest bulbs to plant the following fall. The flavor is fantastic, the bulbs are large and I get more variety.
This was my first year growing garlic. I planted seed garlic and when I harvested it almost all of them are just a bulb of garlic. (I'm not talking about Elephant Garlic) No one has been able to answer my question about not getting cloves. Thank you for your informative video.
We love garlic and eat it every day, it's good for health. Thanks for this inspirational video. We're definitely going to try growing garlic this fall.

Start with containers!!! Just do a few and make a salsa or something simple! Our soil is horrible, so I have to do containers this year, and it is going great so far! Just start small and work your way up!!! You can do it
Best gardening advice I ever heard is this - "Just plant something - give it water, sunlight and nutrients and it will grow". Start with something you like to eat (or a flower you love) - in a pot or in the ground it doesn't matter, once you start it is no longer overwhelming it is addictive!.
Wow, great harvest Becky! This is my first year of growing garlic (or anything really 😉) in Australia. Due to limited space, I planted 2 heads of garlic and we harvested 19 heads of beautiful garlic yesterday... I'm very impressed at how easy it is to grow and proud of my achievement as should you be 😊
Becky you have an awesome harvest going on there!! Great job lady👏🏼♥️ listen you definitely do have a spot to dry your garlic..where you have it on the ground, look up!! Put an eye hook on the wall and sting some twine all the way along that wall to the corner and make clusters of garlic and hang it up!! Then you’ll have your walking area freed up too!😀😀 just a suggestion!! Loving your energy and enthusiasm Becky !! Big hugs from me to you 🇨🇦🌻♥️

did you ever do a garlic preservation video? just planting my garlic now and thinking ahead to how long soft neck vs hardback stores in determining what to plant
Love this. Just think of all the things you can make using garlic One of the things I would be making would be garlic oil, which is olive oil, minced garlic, and dried thyme made in a glass jar and kept unused for a couple of weeks to really infuse the oil with the garlic, for garlic knots.
Wow! Looks great! Can’t wait to see how your preserve them, I would love to learn new methods other than just leaving them as whole heads! I grew 12 garlic heads this year (1 for each month) and that’s all I can consume haha!

When I was young me and my best friend would go out in a huge wild field behind our houses and pull up and eat the wild garlic raw... My mom hated it when I came home from playing bc we would both stink like crazy!! We also had a wild pear tree behind our house and would eat the hard little pears.
My grandmother could smell me eating garlic days before I ever went to her house I couldn't understand it. She was like I swear you smell like garlic. And I would say Mimi, you realize I'm Italian and it's in my blood... 🖖😏🤔🤣
My father used to grow garlic . In his garden. His philosophy was planted and let nature take it’s course. When he became too ill to tend to the garden my husband and I just let it go because we didn’t have the time. Once my father passed, I went out and checked the garden and it was half garlic and half mint with one Lone sage plant. I harvested about a quarter of each crop and had enough to last two years.

Wonderful 🧄 !! You did great girl. You can get one of the clothes line for Amazon the ones that when you are not using retract and it’s just a small box a set it up on that back porch to hang it to cure. Or do some garlic braids which works great for curing and for storage too.

So keep this in mind. I stuck with hardnecks as the taste was amazing. I sold it locally for $20/lb. It's a lot of work on harvest weekend. Family helpers made it doable. Love that plant!
I also enjoy growing garlics. You present your experience with enthusiasum and clairity. Keep climbing!
I haven't grown garlic, just don't have the space but this is so inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
I just planted mine along the outside of my raised beds and some in pots.
I grow it in fabric grow bags
This is why I love watching opposite season channels, so funny to see you harvesting what I have just planted (2 weeks ago - albeit a bit later than I would like)! Unfortunately I had no budget to buy seed garlic this year, but I did have the left over cloves from last years (previous property) elephant garlic harvest to plant - can't wait for January when they will be ready to harvest (assuming they sprout!). Slow roasted elephant garlic is THE. BEST. THING. EVER!!
Ooo, that sounds really good!
Super fun to see your garlic haul! Wow! Keep it up. I really enjoy your company and energy.
You are an absolute blessing and a joy to watch your channel....your energy is contagious....
Thank you so much 🤗
Farming in its vital role as a food supplier is correctly known as one of the most dignified forms of employment, plus it's useful and conducive for good health. Keep it on dear
Although it is time consuming I totally recommend doing the garlic and honey ferment!! I have been waiting for the year mark before getting into a jar of it. By the smells that come out of the jar while it ferments made me have to starte more jars from this years harvest to preserve the same way.
I agree fermented garlic honey is amazing!!!!! I need to make another to start now so I can finish eating my first jar!
You made me regret not holding out for a home with a big yard. Fabulous video.
Brilliant harvest! We had pickled elephant garlic last year, it's so good! Broken into cloves then pickled with any kind of spices you like, it's kind of like a mild pickled onion but a really unique taste and a good crunch :)
Don't forget to save your biggest heads to plant back out in the autumn!
Thank you about the tip ok saving the largest heads!!
Seed garlic? Just save your biggest heads, break them into bulbs and plant this fall.
thanx for tip.
That was my one question..when do you plant?
@@aliciaschultz309 plant in October or November before the ground freezes.
@@aliciaschultz309 in Alaska we need to plant by August but my seed ships September 1st...lol so I might squeeze it in just on the tail end of planting season here.
Wow ! You have enough garlic for entire army! Love garlic and love your video, very proud of you 👍
Wow, what an amazing harvest for your first year!!
Thanks for the tips!
I'm growing garlic around my rosebush just to fight against aphids and to help my roses smell even better. Getting garlic out of it is a big bonus!
Isn’t it lovely!
"Hanging Gardens of Garlic" I love that! What are you going to do with all that garlic?
@@katiejones9106 I hung it to dry. Then when the stalks had dried off, I cut the stalks and the roots off. And cleaned them up. I gave away a bit as whole bulbs and then the rest I left in a dark dry area. I had enough to plant for the next year. To work out how much you need to grow, work out roughly how much you go through in a week then multiply that by 52. If you want to grow more for family and friends add another 20% - 30%
Make sure you have good soil, plenty of manure, compost and good drainage.
As well as have some for myself.
to be fair, garlic and leeks are both alliums (as well as onions, shallots, etc)
Becky, I found you in the last month and subscribed. Thank you for all you are sharing. Thank you for educating me (a former teacher) in things not of my world. Thank you for encouraging me to grow in this new direction
May God bless and keep you and your family...all the days of your life! I look forward to your future education that I will drink up!
THANK YOU from this greatful heart
Stoked for the follow up videos on what you're going to do with all this garlic!
Sending love from 🇨🇦
I’m as excited as you are!! Haha. Can’t wait to make our first raised beds. My yard is super small so will be planting the most eaten for our household. I’m in 9b zone and it is WET here so waiting for it to dry to build and prep the ground. Thx for taking us on your journey!!
We started buying garlic from organic gardeners locally for seed for this year! You did great! I'd call it a total win!!!
WOW YOU SO LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO DO ALL THAT GARDENING EXCELLENT LOVE THOSE GARLIC
That was an awesome amount of garlic 🧄🧄🧄 some of them we huge... Great job Becky....
I’ve only ordered “seed” garlic once & am actually considering ordering again this year. When I went to one of the local nurseries, who’ve been in business for decades, the owner told me “don’t waste your money on seed garlic, just buy a bunch of garlic from the grocery store & plant that”
Then each year, I saved enough of my garlic, as my own seeds
This year’s garlic crop was a flop.
I love your gardening videos so much. Truly a delight
Thank you :)
This was my first year growing garlic. I planted seed garlic and when I harvested it almost all of them are just a bulb of garlic. (I'm not talking about Elephant Garlic) No one has been able to answer my question about not getting cloves. Thank you for your informative video.
My dad taught me how to grow garlic. I breaded mine. I can’t wait to see what else you do!!
Wow that’s special :)
We love garlic and eat it every day, it's good for health. Thanks for this inspirational video. We're definitely going to try growing garlic this fall.
Gardening is so intmedidatinf for some reson but it seem way easy when i see your videos!
I'm trying to grow garlic hope it works!!
Also can you include when you started planting them like the other videos it made it easier to understand the whole planting months, i know it might be different where i am but at least to understand what is winter/summer/fall/spring crops and the cover methoud where you plant somthing to prepare your bed for next seasons
*i'm still trying to understand them and your videos helped a lot thank you*
I never saw a preserving your garlic video. I definitely need a garlic bed next year!!!
Becky I love love love your channel and content! I’ve learned so much and I’ve only discovered your channel a few weeks ago! I can’t wait to finally start canning and preserving!
I'm up above Seattle..only been here a year. I never realized our summer temps were so different between here and your local.
I want to start gardening, but it feels so overwhelming. Iam loving watching your videos and getting all the information. Thank you so much Becky. Sending Anguiano love always ❤
Start with containers!!! Just do a few and make a salsa or something simple! Our soil is horrible, so I have to do containers this year, and it is going great so far! Just start small and work your way up!!! You can do it
That is a great advice!
Thank you!
Big hugs from me to you 🇨🇦🌻♥️
Great idea! Thank you!
I’m old enough to be your great gam but you are my hero!! Love to you!! You’re so inspiring; no fear! Love it. Can you explain to us newbie gardeners the difference in the types of garlic? Love your channel. 💕💕💕💕never mind. Lol
Ah thanks! Hard neck stores for less time but the cloves are bigger. Soft neck stores a long time
did you ever do a garlic preservation video? just planting my garlic now and thinking ahead to how long soft neck vs hardback stores in determining what to plant
Love this. Just think of all the things you can make using garlic One of the things I would be making would be garlic oil, which is olive oil, minced garlic, and dried thyme made in a glass jar and kept unused for a couple of weeks to really infuse the oil with the garlic, for garlic knots.
You're living the dream with that much garlic! You can never have enough garlic!
Impressive content friend 💖 Thank you for sharing.. 🙏 Love it!
Such a great harvest!! I'm so glad you are doing the honey ferment, I just found it and want to try it this year.
Wow! Looks great! Can’t wait to see how your preserve them, I would love to learn new methods other than just leaving them as whole heads! I grew 12 garlic heads this year (1 for each month) and that’s all I can consume haha!
Haha that sounds like a way more reasonable amount lol Sorry for the late reply!
In Australia in my hot State not many veggies like to grow or herbs. In my small garden I plant flowers and now organising my garden for roses . When I watch some channels and see amazing crops people harvesting like you I am jealous =)
I totally get that! I feel that way when I see people with dairy cows lol
Thank You this was lots of FUN.👍🌅🙏🌅Thanks I love your enthusiasm‼️👍
That is a ton of garlic! Last year I bought garlic from the grocery store and planted and got a great crop. Paid 50 cents and got 35 garlic bulbs.
I should try that! Sorry for the late reply!
All that «Garlic Grass» would be perfect to cut off, chop up and freeze. It’s just soooo sweet and great to use in salads, soups etc❣️👏👏👏💚🤗
Amazing! Garlics in your fingertips! Throughout the world!Congrats!
Thank you so much for the video your energy is contagious.
That’s a LOT of garlic 🧄 I’m learning to use it more to flavor recipes but I do t think I could use that much. Great to know it was successful for you.
Great harvest! I'm going to try garlic for the first time this fall. I'm excited😊
Cannot wait to start our garden and do this! 💚💚💚
I’m new …I never new how garlic grow so cool
Hello Cal
How are you doing today
That’s a LOT of garlic! You have a green thumb for sure! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks!
Wow! I have only grown small amounts of garlic! I so want to plant that much one day! Great job! Can't wait to see what you do with it all!
Thank you!
Great job! They look amazing! Super inspiring thanks for the post! I’m going to try and plant my own garlic!
Awesome job. Get ready to plant mines for next year.
Amazing harvest Becky 🌸🦋🌸
I harvested the green leaves and scissor cut them into two inch pieces for stirfry. Dehydrating is easy!
When I was young me and my best friend would go out in a huge wild field behind our houses and pull up and eat the wild garlic raw... My mom hated it when I came home from playing bc we would both stink like crazy!! We also had a wild pear tree behind our house and would eat the hard little pears.
thatll keep the vampires away.
My grandmother could smell me eating garlic days before I ever went to her house I couldn't understand it. She was like I swear you smell like garlic. And I would say Mimi, you realize I'm Italian and it's in my blood... 🖖😏🤔🤣
I love garlic!! Thanks for sharing that! Sorry for the late reply!
Wow Phyllis thank you for sharing your beautiful story with me :)
Hi ..we live zone 8b in England, our elephant garlic crop this year is amazing! I dust the planting hole with bonmeal..We have a problem with alium leaf miner but the elephant garlic hasn't been affected.Your harvest looks fantastic!!!
Thanks for the tips! I don't know if we have those bugs here.....
@@AcreHomestead Looking forward to next post,my elephant garlic will be planted in our Autumn(your fall?) and will probably be in the bed that potatoes were in x
We need to leave our garlic 10 months here. I plant in early November and harvest them in July. After the scapes grow, we cut them off and stop watering them.
Wonderful 🧄 !! You did great girl. You can get one of the clothes line for Amazon the ones that when you are not using retract and it’s just a small box a set it up on that back porch to hang it to cure. Or do some garlic braids which works great for curing and for storage too.
That’s great! Great job! Growing garlic is so satisfying.
I loved it!
Just subscribed n am soo amazed by your understanding of farm products. Good work
So inspiring to see! I can't wait to have more space to pop in raised beds! Your nails look great too :)
I hope you also use the green part. I grow garlic mainly for the green part and use it like green onions. I add it to soups, rice, noodles or cut small pieces and mix with cottage choose and put on bread 🍞. It is also great with scramble eggs.
I really enjoyed watching this! I'm going to be harvesting our garlic for the first time (hopefully soon) so it was super informative! (also look at that elephant garlic :O)
When should you plant garlic in zone 8? I'm new to gardening!
