  • Hello! The shallots this year were grown in a much smaller area of the garden than usual, but the harvest was generous enough for some lovely shallot braids/plaits. Today I'm going to see how good of a teacher I am, as I follow my OWN video from three years ago to braid my homegrown shallots. These are french grey shallots, an heirloom variety with great flavor.

One tip that is helpful is instead of pulling them up, use a spade or fork to lift them. This avoids any damage to the skin.

Just found your channel! 🥰🌱❤️ Your hat is so cute! I have quite a few flopped over alliums, so I probably ought to pull mine as well. 😂 What a nice harvest! Thx for the braiding tutorial as well. Looking forward to more videos like this!

Love your channel, now I am on the hunt for some shallots to plant in my garden this fall! I hope they're not hard to find though. I never really thought they might be hard to grow but I am going to give them a shot this year. Oh, and I will have to check out your garlic braid tutorial for my garlic too!

Not sure if you're still looking, but I planted red shallots from Keene Garlic last year and they're doing amazing.

Filaree Garlic Farm has Dutch Red Shallots and Yellow Potato Onions at good prices. I ordered both from them and these will be of very good size(3"-4" across). The Potato Onions grow like a shallot as one bulb will make many bulbs.

So do you just cut them off from the bottom to use them? Will the braid then unravel?

Where did you get your hat from?

Hi! It's from Hemlock Hat Co. It fits a little snug, so I'm going to see if it stretches out a bit as I wear it. Love the design though!

Nice vid. So after the air dry period are they ready to eat/use?

    • @FreckledCalifornian

yes! After the curing portion, they can be used or stored. Actually, they can be used fresh too (like garlic). The curing is to prep them for storage.
