For the garlic scapes. If you have too many and don't know what to do with them. You can place them in water till they flower. Once they go to seed you can plant the seeds right away and in a few weeks you can harvest them as garlic chives
I like to imagine that if I am ever visited by the ghost of one of my ancient ancestors and have to explain to them the purpose of RUclips, that I will show them videos of gardeners showing off their bountiful vegetable hauls. At which my ancestor will nod knowingly - perfectly understanding that this is why humans invented the moving picture machine.
Its my 2nd year gardening and I planted garlic last year with the help of yours and Kevin's videos and my garlic came out amazing. Since you guys are local I always look forward to these kind of videos, they've been a ton of help. Looking forward to more! (Need an update on the natives!)
I harvested all of the scapes from half my garlic. SO. delicious. I dehydrated some and I am very excited to grind it up and see how it works as a lighter garlic powder.
Thanks for the great idea for drying onions. I have a small greenhouse that has larger holes on the shelves and when I saw you turn yours upside down and put the stems through the grates, I knew mine would be drying that way this year. Absolutely perfect!! I also put my garlic in there as well.
You’re so clever when it comes to making things work like the drying table😊 That is the second time I have seen someone talk about those garlic flowers. They kind of look like swan necks great video
Hi Jacques! What do you do when it rains while the onions are curing outside? Do you let them get wet from the rain or do you cover them? What if I’m at work & we have a thunderstorm & I can’t cover them? Will I ruin my onion curing crop? I live in Northern NJ. Please send me some kind of tip. Much appreciate it! ❤ your channel! 😀
QUESTION: I live in a mild climate near Dallas. My onions survived over the summer and never flopped or dried out. Now it's late November / beginning of December and they are still growing strong. Should I still wait for them to flop? If the tops are still green and growing, how long do I wait?
hey Jack, wondering about growing garlic... can I only grow it from cloves or can I let the scapes go to seed and grow garlic that way ? i live in Aust, Qld if that changes anything?
Questions: 1. If i planted onions in early march, why aren't mine bulbing yet? Lots of green onions to cut, but no bulb. Do you have a video for this? 2. His do you make them last for months instead of jusr a couple weeks. I store in a basket and feel i lose store bought ones quickly. 3. Do you have build plans for the cure table?! I love it!!! ...nay gave forgotten one. That's all for now... Unrelated, do you know how to make onion or garluc powder?
@@jacquesinthegarden Thanks! I guess I haven't seen actual strawflowers or maybe the angle is just making them look different. Love your vids and your information. Keep them coming, please!
This information came at the perfect time! I recently planted my onions and I am new to growing them and was needing information on growing and curing. Could you speak on starage? That would really help! Thanks!
What do you do if it's going to rain before the onions are done curing? I'm curing my onions now (for the first time) and it's been raining almost every day so I've had them in the house but taking them outside on sunny days. Will this work? I'm in N. MS, zone 8.
So this is the first year - in my many failed attempts to grow onions - that my sprouts look somewhat promising. I think they still have about another month of growing, (previously zone 5b, now 6a). All the videos show perfectly formed onion bulbs above the soil. Did you need to spoon them or did they grow that way? Mine are all still green and not showing any signs of bulbs.
No luck growing onions like that in Portland, Oregon for me, Spring onions no problems but no dice with red onions or yellow onions, but I’ll keep the faith and keep trying
Last years onion harvest was a bust. This year, I have a few big onions. So things are getting better but I haven’t yet find the sweet spot in my yard where they will be happy.
If you haven’t yet, check your onion sun hours. It’s how much sun they need per day to bulb. I didn’t realize it was necessary, and I definitely put them in the wrong spot, lol.
I was somewhere around a month late transplanting my onions into the ground, do I have much a hope in getting a decent harvest? Or what could I do to help them out? Luckily I planted a lot of them, and some seem to be growing really quickly, but others have barely grown in the couple weeks since I put them in the ground and don’t look like much more than blades of grass
It is hard to say for sure but we have seen them grow year round with any issue. You can fertilize if the bulbs are small but once they really start forming it is best to cut fertilizer.
Our reds were wonky this year.🥺😞 Our onion fairy said this year's batch were a bad lot. Luckily a family friend got his from another nursery, and is sharing the bounty! 😊
Luckily no rain here for the rest of the year! As for dew I was fortunate to have no dewy nights but being under the tree actually stops a lot of it as well!
We have 2 weeks of what would MAYBE be considered winter. Our hardnecks only produced two scapes. I left them on to grow bubils and true seeds. Still had great sized cloves. Everyone should experiment to see what they get.
It is usually available at hardware stores like dixieline, ace, home depot, or lowes. It tends to be in the garden center where they also have hardware cloth and t posts.
It was for sure both of the above for those plants. I am ok with eating them as spring onions and moving on, only about 6-10 onions were like that anyway.
"Flopped on the inside" is my mood today. I didn't have words for it. I feel seen, onion.
Haha, that is a keeper.
I was about to say the same thing. Lol
I think its a good tshirt idea. lil sad cartoon onion

@@jacquesinthegarden Patiently waiting for Jacques cooking videos then ;)
I took a section of cyclone dog fencing panel and laid it between two picnic benches on my back covered deck area for drying my onions.

Excellent video! All my questions answered. Thank you 😊
Nothing better than a harvest to plate meal with fresh onions
Fresh onions lightly grilled or fired in the pizza oven with olive oil is magic
I just finished using the last of my stored onions a couple weeks ago. I was thrilled with how well they kept. Growing even more this year.

Super timely video. Really helps with knowing when to harvest which I've started. Seems I did it mostly right. We shall see!
I grow the yellow Granex every year and they always perform well. This year some of them are huge and my tops have still not flopped over.

Jacques you need to try garlic scapes kimchi. They’re sold as “garlic stems” in the Korean market
Woah, that sounds delicious, will for sure look for it next time I go to HMart/Zion
can i ask on 4:44 what flowers are those growing on the trellis ???

I thought I heard that onions flower in the second year. How do they shed the first year above ground growth to send up a flower?
When I look at my onions compared to yours, I feel flopped on the inside, too😂 . Mine are so small still!
They will get there!
I haven't planted mine yet, if that makes you feel any better
How do you store them inside?
If you finish all of those onions in just the next few weeks, you must LOvE onions even more than my mom AND have a family full of my moms. 😂😂😂
Is there any specific way that you store your onions once they come inside?
Thank you❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome!
Hey maybe this is a silly question, but can they be stored in place? Let them just stay in the ground until you’re ready to cook them?
They can but eventually they will start to rot in the sun once they stop properly growing!
@@jacquesinthegarden that makes sense, thanks!
WERE DO YOU STORE THEM INSIDE
My red onions are still all green! Taking quite a long time.
Sometimes they can take longer if they have less sun overall.

did i plant my onions too late? i planted them in march or april and theyre just small green stems at the moment..
also I am in SD too where did you find that fencing to create your onion table? I have looked all over

Was Kev filming? Think I heard him giggle
Does anyone have experience with pearl onions? I think I waited too long to harvest them because they are pretty big (I waited for the next to flop)
is it ruined? I moved my curing garlic out of the way of sprinkler and forgot for 3 days, it sat in direct sun for 3 days, is it ruined?
I love your table! I just showed my husband and asked him to build me one!
Tips for thrips???
I'm looking at all of the green - I would've left it in the ground. It might've been crowded, or it might've been shaded.

What about rain where you have onion’s stored
Then you will need to go indoors/shed/garage or fully covered but the humidity would still slow things down.
I can’t figure out why, but I just can not get onions to grow here in the PNW. Apparently I’m just not good at it. 😒
Did you have any fog at night during those ten days?
No real moisture condensation, it has been oddly dry and not dewy at all!
