I have great luck with zebrune red shallots. Zone 5b south shore of lake superior. I start seeds in potting mix in February, in my basement under grow lamps . I use dry wall mud trays with drilled holes in the bottom (plastic ones or stainless steel ). I moisten soil (not wet) Seed sowing on the surface sow or covered lightly with soil . Then spritz with water bottle. Cover with plastic wrap. Lower the light about 2 inches above the trays. Please don’t let dry out. 10 days to two weeks for germination. After germination remove plastic wrap. When they have to about6-8 inches give them a haircut take about two inches off. May have to get another time before planting outdoors. Plant like onions 6 inches apart in rows about afoot apart. Just thought I would share. Thanks for all your hard work Luke !! Love your channel. Dean
You must be a mind reader because I was just doing research on growing shallots last night!
Mind reading: just one of Luke's many talents.

I never thought of laying chicken wire on top of the bed to thwart the squirrels! Thanks Luke!
Bahah! Shallots and duvets are the reason my mother in law calls me a bougie yuppie.
Never thought about growing shallots…. Now I am!! 😄
I have shallots from seeds and almost ready to put out here in south Texas.
I did my shallots from seed last year in a bed very similar to this and they did very well. Some of my sets are the size of my fist.
Very helpful video. Thank you.
I've not considered sets of shallots as I've never seen them grown, so now knowing that pattern, I'll see if I can't get some to add to my gardens this year.
I've always wondered if I could grow them. Thanks for this video.
Great video, Luke. Learned something new today! Thanks for the thorough explanation on how to grow shallots!
So funny. I was just looking to see if you did a shallot video this morning. There was a really old one and I was getting into the garden in the morning and just went with it. Thank you for the update and I will be pulling a few out and spacing them wider apart. Thank you again for the video it is really perfect timing😊
Thank you for talking about what to do when growing shallots from seed. Haven't really heard or read about them being a 2 year crop. I just thought I was craptastic at growing shallots from seeds.
I solved all of my shallot growing problems by buying Zebrune Shallot seeds from you. I had horrible germination from 6 other varieties and 3 other companies prior.
Dutch Red shallots are extremely productive. I grew them exactly the same as garlic, including separating the cloves.
Trying these this fall. I got a big set .I’m in Covington Ga. Got to get them in the ground…along with my garlic real soon. Great video ❤now I know how to do these 😅
This explains so much!
Yay! Thank you for this! I grew shallots from seed this year and had some to plant! I found out that I'm able to tolerate shallots waay better than onion, so I wanted to grow a bunch more next year. Planted it 15 of my sets and I'll also plant more seed in the spring!
Thank you!
Great info. Thank you.
Thank you, as usual learned a lot of good information.
Thank you. This was some great advice and I learned that I did a few things wrong this year. Hopefully I'll get a good crop of shallots but if not at least I will know why. Not knowing what went wrong is the worst! Thank you. Time to grow big!
I followed advice for the last couple of years to plant shallot sets in Spring not Autumn (as I do with most of my garlic). Have had good returns on the crops with none of them going to seed so far. Some of the garlic I've planted in early Spring before didn't vernalise properly and gave me back a giant bulb but not the shallots.
Now I've heard you say this I'll plant them now rather than waiting, but based on my results they seem to be a lot more forgiving than garlic.
Onions Bougie cousin, I love it 😂
Don't tell the French. They refuse to call them onions. Shallots are shallots, not onions. 😂
Just put my garlic in after watching your garlic video! Look forward to this one.
I'm up north in zone 4... Too cold for fall planting.
Shallots are my favorite! Love growing them 😃
I planted some seeds in the spring (around May 12th or so) and they're still growing and the leaves are massive. We're nearing November and they're not even slightly yellowing yet.
Lol! I had giant red shallots I just harvested. I must be doing something right😅. Zebrune shallots from seed got huge and jumped out of the ground.
Wonder if I should replant it and see what happens as they do want to grow again.🧐
I just topped rows with rotted bark. It looked better than the bagged potting soil I bought.
When do you plant walla walla onion and red onion sets fall or spring? I am in zone 4b.
I'm in southern Michigan, and was thinking about doing low-domes over my winter crops. Would that be a good idea?
Luke, can shallots be planted in late fall in zone 3? The temperature drops to between -40 and -50 degrees Celsius during January February. Most plants freeze solid & die in this zone over the winter.
For zone 4 or colder your planting suggestion in the Fall is not appropriate.
Which pelletized sulfur do you recommend?
Our neighborhood raccoon delights in digging up my garlic!
3:09 If you dig about 10-12 inches deep you will get to the "native soul". Yes, the garden has a soul.
In how to grow garlic video you put trifecta in soli isn’t that gona encourage to grow green like in onions?
Where to buy shallots sets for the fall?
So...what happens if the Sulphur is dust and not pellets?
I have a question about Parsley. I’m sorry but I can’t figure out how to ask other than on this video feed. I’m in Indiana, should I dig my parsley and bring it inside in a pot for winter, or will it survive the winter outside?
Can I plant my shallot seeds like onions? Many seeds in one cell?
Good Sets are so expensive now, I don’t know how people afford it.
Fyi they aren't totally dormant they root all winter long though the tops don't emerge until spring.
What about mulch?
This looks like it might be fun, but I was wondering whether shallots, onions, and garlic can be grown in bags? I might not be here for next Spring so may need to make some things portable and wanted to know if that will still work.
You can, they generally get a tad smaller but still pack a punch of flavour 💓
Good work ❤❤ same My work agriculture Pakistan
I don't see shallot sets in your store.😢
Is there any difference between the shallots you get in Europe vs the states. See the ones I get in Sweden (usually from the Netherlands, Spain or France) we plant in the spring and still get a set of 4-10 onions depending on type. Makes me want to try to plop some down now but when I've done that before they run and flowered, still haven't tried in years.
Yeah I was thinking the same. Got an average of 8 shallots on one set in south Finland and I planted them in the spring!
All onions will flower in second year. Mine from seed did not and got huge. Zebrune shallots. Never tried replanting, but will now as I just found a couple and they grew up out of the ground and want to regrow again. We are finally getting colder weather so will try it.
@@dustyflats3832 most of mine don't bloom. I think I had two of around 130 that sprouted blooms this season. I just keep my shallots for next season and plant them mid spring. And harvest 3-4 months later.
What is the beautiful tree with red foliage at the intro of this segment? 🍁
Looks like maple.
Sugar Maple. Stunning in fall.
I’m confused. I thought you don’t plant the whole shallot ?
