If you decide to go with any other color, I have always been a fan of the burnt orange Sunset Pearlescent M03 of the final generation eclipse. Maybe even a bit of black accents if you add any body mods. Good luck with the build, it's was my original dream car growing up. Even had a red Talon of the same gen. Excited to see where you take this build.
Super excited for this new build series Alex! I had a 1st gen DSM that I fully built years ago. I have one hard lesson I want to pass on to you. Upgrade the PCV / crankcase ventilation prior to upping the boost or upgrading the turbo. The factory system is too small and it will back pressurise the oil return on the turbo! I went through 2 turbos because of this. this can also be the reason you don't have an oil dipstick as they typically pop off from the crankcase pressure. Good luck👍
I knew what it was as soon as he was driving it. Lol the back seat and where the rear speakers were gave it away. My little brother bought a 92 eagle talon and it completely changed my mind on four cylinders.
@@turbo_brian well that not really true the non turbo cars use a neon engine and the entire subframe and chassis are actually different, the turbo cars are all mitsu so a gst or gsx is fully Japanese
Beautiful find. Some things I would recommend thinking about replacing: 1: go to a helical center diff 2: poly bushings for rear diff and suspension 3: upgrade the synchros in the tranny (while you're in there consider upgrading other tranny internals)
Helical center differential aka Quaife is weak and prone to failure. 4 spider center and a front differential of your choice would be my recommendation. He will have a hard time finding parts for the transmission if he can't even find the turbo oil return line gasket which is still available (MR258477)
For that thing to have 230k+ miles on it and be in THAT good of condition means that the previous owner fucking adored that car and gave it the best possible care for all those years. Like its impossibly rare to see someone care for such a car to that level for that long.
And now it’s gonna be modded to shit with body mods that don’t belong on that year car, make too much power for it to handle (watch the trans and axles with that mileage go), and be lowered and look stupid. If the owner watches this it will be sad. He kept it so original just for it to fall into what he had hoped would be a responsible restoration type of owner. Plus at 42:10 he freaking dropped the clutch with the unknown howling… this thing is already getting beat on more than it has since the previous owner had it.
Jesus Christ, the car was not cared for behond all belief. It was from freaking Nevada. There isn’t going to be rust on the car. The car was probably owned by somebody who just used it at a car.
@@NorthwesterNomad He said in the video it’s probably one of the last clean one of those, I doubt I’d find one that clean without rust. Plus “original” can be achieved.
SO excited for this series. i picked up a 95 talon tsi awd 5 speed with the lsd a few months ago right in your back yard alex. bone stock, ice cold AC, clean rockers and strut towers. 95k miles!
I paid big for mine too, but it's a full AWD conversion in a convertible with an all Eagle Talon cosmetic conversion. No rust anywhere. Big 16G turbo. $10k
Brings back memories...I had a '93 Laser Turbo AWD with a 5 speed back in the late 90's...just a used car back then and nearly everyone gave me a hard time for buying it. But, it was still a lot of fun with it. Good luck with the build!
Sometimes I forget youre actually a legit mechanic because it just feels like you're talking directly to me. In your mustang video and just now I was going to comment tips and you end up going over it all (Eclipse crank walk, Mustang Turbo return oil line smoking etc).
Umm, I have a 1990 Eagle Talon FWD Turbo that has been in my garage since 2001. It's completely original. There was a small dent in the front fender, and a small patch of rust on one quarter panel. I had the notion when I was younger, more ambitious, and "suffering" with OCD that I would rebuild it top to bottom but after a bit of tear down, life caught up to me and I stopped in my tracks. While catching up I obsessively bought tons of parts for that car, also bought and rolled another 1990 Eagle Talon AWD Turbo. Now both sit there, with lots of potential for resurrection into a completely "new" old car but no interest to ever finish. Any fans of this dude want to chat?
Couple of thoughts for a 'mature build' as you mentioned: 1. Go for maximum drivability, at least over exaggerated looks/sounds. This could be a beautiful car 'for those who know'. I'd at least add a muffler and possibly also extra sound insulation to the interior, so you really want to take this car for a road trip. 2. Don't overspend as most of us wouldn't. Find best value upgrades and show us your options, considerations and choices. Your audience will appreciate it. (AP-coilovers are available for this car, as is a Holset turbo. Both will give you performance and reliability affordably. A Holset HX35W will get you your 500 HP reliably with acceptable EGT.) 3. Don't go crazy with the paint, make it elegant and stay far away from Fast and Furious styles. I'd be more thrilled about adjusting the gearbox and ratios to the new power output, than seeing the original body being mutilated. 4. Tires on a 90's car should have some meat, both for the visual aspect as for the way it drives. 18, 19 or 20" with 35-30-25% sidewalls would make the build immature. So go with 16" or 17" light alloys, combined with brakes that are a good fit with both. I'm interested to see what others think about this ...
Absolutely agree. These cars are not meant to follow the awful trendy TikTok wave of big wheels, slammed to the ground, tacky paints and whatever else. Ironically I owned a static LS400 that was 2 inches from the ground which I sold for a 1st gen Talon and your points mainly fall in line with my personal plans. They certainly deserve to be respected for what they are as a more mature tuner car that can look and perform beautifully if done right.
18’s with a 40 sidewall, 17’s were becoming standard by the late 90’s on performance models. For paint definitely stay away from flashy super car colors even white is played out…
@@wss952 too bad most of the cars sold weren’t the boosted performance models. The oem turbo bulge hood was usually just a reminder of what could have been. Love the raised rear spoiler on the late 90’s talon though thought it looked better than the eclipse. The first gen talon actually looks great even today with the pop up headlights
@@dirtyaznstyle4156 most of the models looked pretty good and have their own cool things except for the pre facelift 2G which looks awful but the hood bulge is actually on all models and was for the timing belt on the 4g63s and on just for looks on the base models with 420a.
Awesome, GSX is definitely on my JDM list. So excited to see this build/restoration. My other 2 JDM dream cars twin turbo 300zx with the t-tops and the Mitsubishi 3000gt VR6
Used to have a 99 red GSX with a 6bolt swap back in the early 2000s. Miss it so much. Currently looking for another one and you are right, so much trash being peddled as “mint” in the DSM community. Taking my time and most of us guys are now hitting our mid life and have the cash to spend. Taking my time to find the right one to come along. Restore it and just take it for Sunday drives and reliving the glory days.
Thank you Alex I will be watching closely I have an unfinished 1999 manual GSX That’s seating in my garage see if I can finally finish her thanks to you guys 👍👍
I knew right away from the thumbnail it was a second generation Mitsubishi eclipse and I got to say that is one good looking car in my opinion those cars have age very well and congratulations for you getting it man 👍
Great addition! These aren’t really “JDM” cars being built in Illinois by DSM. The 4G63 makes up for all of that though. The FP manifold is a quality part and “14b looking” turbo (stock 1g turbo) are nice step 1 mods.
The 7 bolt crank walk issue was way over exaggerated in most cases. Usually the primary cause of it is a heavy clutch used for higher power applications.
My crank walked in my 96 Talon tsi, while out of state at around 80mph back in around 2004 in PA. Took a bus back up to NY and towed it back about a month later. It always seems to be exaggerated when hasn't happened to you.
I was a Mopar guy long before I got into imports. During my transition, I researched and coveted the DSM cars. Love the Talons and Stealth. I accepted I couldn't afford a Eclipse or 3000gt long ago. Been tuning and swapping Honda's for +15 years because they are cheep and plentiful. I still break my neck watching every old Gen1 or Gen2 DSM I see on the road. I did own a 2.5-TII Shelby turbo Daytona for a few years, it made power but it was not a awd or dohc car. Look forward to following the build. Keep em on the road. Drive safe all. Edit: Ive done dozens, if not over a hundred compression checks over the years.. Never done one with the valve cover off, looks hypnotic.
Great vid on the Diamond Star Motors DSM Eclipse build start. I’m a big Acura Honda guy with 7.5 years living and working in Japan so your channel just got more interesting! A big Yoroshiku to your compadre Peter as well as your fine family. Keep up the good work. Learning so much especially the need for many specialty tools. But your imaginative use of other tools to get the job done is most appreciated!
“Historically, the Japanese are known for their sneak-attacks” 😂😂 Love the energy Peter brings to the channel, and I love that you’ve gotten a *nice* GSX! I’ve had a 2g (facelift) GSX and a 2g Talon TSi and loved them both. They’re fantastic cars if you can find a clean one. Enjoy! I can’t wait to follow along.
The front main seal is leaking and most likely has a groove in the crank where the seal is. It's common for a groove to be worn in it on higher mileage DSM's. The easiest way I've found to deal with it is to slide a micro sleeve over the snout.
18:34 Sounds like you're describing a MK4 Supra, which isn't necessarily bad, but is far from inspired. When I think of an "adult sport car" I think 911 Turbo rather than 911 GT3. Elegant and unassuming but a beast underneath. Like a ninja wearing a tuxedo.
I have a black '93 Eclipse GS (N/T) manual sitting in my garage waiting for me to bring it back to life. I've owned it since '94 but many years ago it got hit in the front drv side and was set aside because I didn't have time to address it (turned out to be relatively minor damage). A couple years ago I got back into repairing it a bit but I think the ECU is dead now (infamous) so it's been sitting again waiting for me to dive back into it. I love the car and it's in practically like new condition inside (tinted windows really helped keep the interior from getting destroyed in the FL and SoCal environments - and was garage kept a majority of the years). Outside has some faded paint but might come back with some polishing. All stock too, not tortured and mutilated.... 134k miles. I love that car.. extremely fun to drive. I'll be watching this playlist for sure. Eager to see what you do with your DSM.
@@4G6Tre Ah, yeah those PPGs are quite spendy. Mine is for autocross, not drag racing, so I couldn't bring myself to let go of that 3rd pedal. for a drag car, though, might as well go auto.
@@mikescherrer4923 I’m going to hopefully post my progress on my channel soon. It might be one of the only auto swapped VR4’s on RUclips, I know there’s only a handful in the states
Don’t do the BBS wheels IMO. this will look amazing with a set of volk CE28N or TE37’s in like 16/17” with some chunk to the tyres but some grippy tyres like Yokohamas
Wow so original… TE37s like everyone else who doesn’t think for themselves. Get a nice set of 5 spoke wheels with thin spokes and get Baer big brake kit for it
these cars are timeless looking for real. ive had a couple myself and they are beautiful cars, i just wish they werent so prone to rusting out the shocks like they are. id still daily an eclipse anytime tho, they will always look incredible.
Why not coat the areas that are prone to rust? or im missing something? I wouldn't drive my sports car in the rain anyway even more so strict on salty roads.
@@aidenp5768 it helps to an extent but alot of the time its just thin metal fatigue after years. Especially in ohio where I'm at, the slightest bit of rust or fatigue, along with potholes, makes the struts pull the whole strut tower up.
In my opinion, and given the global condition of the car, you should consider maintaining it externally stock with exception of the wheels you could go with some period JDM ones. Keep it white. It could be a total sleeper with 450whp. Consider it man. Will follow this build ! Congrats on the purchase
Blast from the past! Soooo nice to see a non-F&F car. Love the pearl white idea, works great with the rounded elegant lines of this period car. Subscribed!
One reason why the 4G63 is so good is because it's actually the engine from the older models of the Lancer Evolution of the same era. It's an engine designed for rally racing. Mitsubishi gave the Eclipse GS-R and GS-X the 4G63. The base model Eclipse GS and the Eclipse RS got a different engine that barely hit 90hp to the wheels. A basic commuter engine. I've always loved 4G63s. Because it's so similar to the Evolution engines, you can pretty easily swap in a true Evolution engine into the higher trimmed Eclipse models.
To stop crankwalk: 1. Use 6 bolt rods because they are wider. Then narrow each rod at the big end individually to match the crank journal in which it will be assigned to. You can assure a snug and perfect rod side clearance with the crank to prevent excessive oil loss due to centrifugal forces. 2. Resize the big end of the rod as most (not all) aftermarket rods are too loose with bearing clearance. 3. Use only the wider early style 6-bolt rod bearings as they tend to not only live longer and have more surface area, but they hold more oil in to prevent loss. 4. The crank oil passages are too large. So large that they can continue to feed oil to the rods as the mains don't get enough. Modify the passages so as to increase oil pressure at the mains yet still give the rods adequate oil to live a long and trouble free service life.
I had a 1981 Plymouth Sapporo made by Mitsubishi that I bought from my parent in 1986. Finding brake pads for that car was nearly impossible and when I did finally find them after calling everyone they were really expensive. Great car. 2.6 liter engine, 5-speed, rear wheel drive, 4 wheel disc. Not a lot of HP but a torque monster. Loved that car.
Awesome, congrats! Can't wait to follow the project. My Japanese dream cars are NSX, FD RX7, or Z32 300ZX twin turbo. Enjoying my E36 M3 for now though.
Absolutely love the dsm cars. I think I have had 4 in my life, never a 2Gen gsx though. I have to say, seems like it should be quicker than what it is, looked like it was about as fast as the non turbo 4g63 cars I had..... Can't wait to see how this thing evolves. Great find Alex
I had a 99 GST I loved that car it would smoke the tires till you grabbed 4th gear 😁 Evo 16g turbo front mount and ethanol was like 350hp that's plenty, the torque steer on the fwd is no joke if you weren't careful you were in the next lane real quick 🤣
From Tokyo Drift to Chicago Swift. Love how you are going all in to make this better than original and where you can really have fun in it. When these came out I never looked twice at them, I was still loving the 3rd Gen Camaro.
What a moment of nostalgia I just had here. It brought back all the years I had with my father's Eclipse back in 1999. Congrats Alex for your Eclipse. It looks amazing and I will be watching closely all the videos coming next. Congratulations again.

I have too many dream cars lol 97-99 Eclipse GSX, AE86 Corolla, 1989 Skyline GTR R32 Vspec-II, mk4 Supra RZ, Celica GT-Four, GC8 WRX coupe, Silvia S14, 180sx hatch, EG Civic hatch, EK Civic Type R hatch, 2000 Integra, 1st gen NSX.... I love all of them equally. Any one of them would make me so happy. There's others too, but I'm too tired to list more lol
Short shifter, bucket seats, footrest for passenger, medium roll cage, carborn door panels, bigger turbo, separate oilcooler and bigger intercooler... new poly bushings all over and coilovers . Make it sweet
build the head, raise the redline, and a nice fp red or fp black setup on e85 should make somewhere in the 400-500 neighborhood. It sounds like you're going to do this right and make it a clean build, so i'm looking forward to seeing more of this thing
Uh no, head port, 272 cams, built bottom end and HG, big turbo, HKS SSQ blow off, Tial WG, tubular mani (with braking as they always crack), 3" o2 housing, 3" exhaust, High flow cat (to pass emissions) stock looking 3" dual exhaust muffler (for states with exhaust moding laws), 650+ injectors, walboro 255 fuel pump, 3" GM maf conversion with maf translator, big intercooler with 3" pipes, get the trans beefed up and throwout bearing, short shifter, rear beefed up, axles beefed up, stage 3 clutch, alcohol injection for the engine...I could go on and on. This will make well over 600hp and be reliable without ruining the car or interior or being stupid annoyingly loud. You can also go MUCH further and make up to like 1200hp on the bleeding edge but 600-800 would be plenty on the road to smoke most competition. CAST IRON 4G63 4EVER!
This will be a fun one to watch! I know the first gens look good with an all black roof and pillar area, I think this can be done the 2nd gen too. Also, the EVO brembo brakes make for great OEM+ upgrades.
I randomly found this on YT's home page. This is my one and only dream car, but it has become so expensive in Europe that it's simply not affordable for me anymore. A GSX in Europe costs around 20-30k€. It would be so easy to just import a cheap one from the US, but it costs basicaly the same amout of money to get it shipped, delivered amd registered. I just hope that someday i'll have one.
Jessssssss... I can not wait to see this project progress. F&F 1 was my freaking childhood. I didn't care how silly it was back then and I still don't. I still stop and watch it every single time I see it while flipping through channels.
The conquest and starion were some of my favorites. I had a conquest years ago and absolutely loved driving that car. Swapping the vacuum line for more boost was always a fun time.
Congrats alex on a top purchase and future project/series. Thank god you didnt buy a rust bucket. Love it, looks like it's gonna shape up to be a good one. Absolutely yes, a grown up modification and restoration. Love the white, maybe make it a pearlescent white for a bit more something but not to much pearl. All the the mods you talk about are good and tasteful. Looking forward to seeing the progress on this. Hope the ford lightening gets an episode or two in between also.
My brother used to own one. On of the coolest cars I’ve ever been in and to this day it’s one of my dream cars. Unfortunately he had to sell his and with the rarity of them I don’t think I’ll have that experience again.
The extra nipple on the intake pipe is for emissions stuff. The line goes to the evap canister. That stock BOV is balls. They leak so bad. That car stock can be found for a lot less then 8k.... but I do like white.
There are also a few different versions of the 7 bolt. The early versions use a 360 degree thrust bearing like the 6 bolt blocks, and they moved the oil squirters from the bottom of the cylinders to the main saddles. The later 7 bolt blocks moved the squirters back to the cylinders and went with a 180 degree thrust bearing. Also, the 6 bolts use a 12mm head bolt with the 7's using an 11mm.
$8K for a clean car that you have wanted since like forever-is a dream come true. Almost 240K(about distance to the moon) on the odometer sounds about right for a well maintained Japanese engine. Had '88 Mazda 323 til 2015(mostly outdoors in Florida) and took to dealer for 25th Anniversary and dealer said cylinders and valve train were in excellent condition. Not surprised if engine is original.
I had a bone stock 1990 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD that I bought back in 2010 for $2500. It had the ugliest wheels on it so the first thing I did was get some 2G DSM OEM wheels for it with new tires. I put a 2g turbo manifold on it, 2g "609" MAF, 660cc injectors, an Evo III B16G turbo, 3" downpipe and exhaust, a front mounted intercooler and piping, a 1G EEPROM ECU, and I had it tuned at 20 psi to make 348 awhp. It was alot of fun and it was very reliable.
Don't get a heavy clutch pressure plate. Get a twin disc setup if you want good power and to keep your crank happy. Also, keep an eye on your front lower control arms. Back in the day they had issues with the aluminum being weak in those (recalled). Don't expect to turn fast at low speeds and high rpms unless you figure out a way to make an mr2 or volvo electric power steering pump work. High rpm cutout assist in your steering will happen if you autocross it. Replace the radiator if it's stock. End tanks were garbage. Otherwise, these are fantastic. Had a 2g gst and about four 1g awds. Love dsms and hate they were never taken care of by most owners.
Very cool, I had a 1G GST and 2G GSX when I was in high school, I'm definitely gonna follow this, I'm now 36 with my dream Supra so I can relate for sure.
This buy and coming build is the reason I subbed! Best engine ever sold outsides Toyota's non-interference engines! Best moders car. Best US market import until the New GTR came to the USA. I miss my 1996 Eclipse Turbo SO much! Most fun to drive car ever! I loved spanking 99% of cars on the road before AWD was everywhere. Now this car will only keep up with and beat most but not all modern sports cars unless you max it out and strip it down to a racer (which I do not care for)
a couple years ago I had a 95 gst with 99 facelift, it had the classic f&f mod list: Injen polished intake, greddy exhaust, greddy type s, 20g turbo and greddy/sard gauges and led gauge lighting lol and it was painted evo x limited edition cosmic blue as well. it was a ripper. You’ll have lots of fun with this one.
Very nice find! This is my favorite car while i was finishing high school. Now my 15 year old daughter has been saving up for her first car and this is her favorite, without my influence so i was happy about that. She prefers a convertible. If you decide to sell this, hopefully we are able to purchase and hold until she gets her drivers license. Wow
please more 90’s and 80’s car content! I love radera cars which is why i drive a 94 f150 and ware a flannel coat listening to nirvana or other 90’s music. It just sounds so right and brings me back to my childhood!
I had a '92 Plymouth Laser RS. It was the horribly awesome blue-green (aqua on the title) with the honeycomb wheels. Super sleeper!! I rebuild the 6 bolt, had it bored 20 over, balance shafts removed, cometic head gasket, arp head studs, lightweight flywheel, hd clutch, short shifter, 2g lifters, evo3 16g turbo, 2g wastegate, massive front mount (ran bumper cover only, removed bumper and support 😀), all hard piped, genuine HKS SSQV vented into atmosphere (with, imo the best sounding purple insert) 3in GM maft and afc Neo which I tuned (pre-google, pre-RUclips and pre- Fast and the Furious) with a PDA data logger and my Haynes book!!! 2 1/2 inch, no cat, to a magnaflow muffler, eibach pro kit (only 1 inch drop) all the energy suspension bushings, motor mounts, strut bars front and back, Yokohama tires. Stock interior with the silly auto seat belts, lol. Had to replace the passenger side seat bolts from friends not ready for the launch. You know your doing it right when the wipers turn on because the factory heavy wiper stock attached to the steering wheel is pulling G's. I was taking 5.0 Mustangs to Gapplebee before it was a thing, could also drop a gear and disappear on the highway going 60. OMG it was too much fun, but went into big debt always fixing on it. Then had a friend and original owner of a black, 5 speed, 1998 Nissan 240sx, offer to let me buy his car and I jumped on it so quickly... I ended up selling my Laser I spent over $10,000 on for $2500 to pay for the 240sx. Crazy stuff, keep up the good, clean, and adult work your doing, very nice, I love it.
My first job out of high school was at a Mitsubishi/ Nissan dealership in the late 90s. I was a porter, oil changer, part runner, basically whatever they needed and got to drive alot of these as well as the 3000gts ,300 zx , and occasionally 200sx. Such a fun job even though 7.50 an hour just wasn't enough to stick around but I still think back on all the cool cars I got to drive.
I've had 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen Eclipses (yes, I'm one of those weirdos that liked the 3rd gen cars.) Such fun cars to drive and mod. You're gonna love it.
Im fixing up my 94 gsx right now. mine is all stock with everything, still smells new. I did put a new headliner in. pulled the engine for a rebuild but ill keep it all original as much as i can. 102k on it.
First and foremost, I love the car. I actually was still trying car sales as a career and sold Eagles during the first generation of these and sold a couple of the turbos. But, come on guys. Not only is it not JDM (Japanese Domestic Market). It was manufactured in, of all perfect places, Normal Illinois. 🤓. The JDM equivalent of this would be an FTO. Still looking forward to the build. These are a little harder to build as parts were fewer and farther between back then. I can’t imagine how tough it will be to get them now. Good luck and fun times. 🦵
Peter and I need to be friends. I have a 1987 Chrysler Conquest that I bought 21 years ago when I turned 16. Had 28k original miles, has about 55k now. All stock, prime condition. Awesome, very underrated cars!
I had a '94 Eagle Talon TSI AWD bought new in '94. Thing was awesome. Wish I still had it but traded it for a new truck in '97. It topped out at 147 mph, had crazy acceleration and was fun to drive. I can't remember exactly which, but it rivaled the Viper in either 0-60 or the 1/4 times but was less than 1/2 the price. Still keep my eye out for 1 similar to this day. I almost bought the next generation (similar to this video) but didn't like how it felt sitting/driving at the time.
Saw the thumbnail and knew it was a 2g DSM :D. I picked mine up over a year ago and I love it, 8k is a great price in todays market for a running and driving unrotted GSX for sure! I paid around the same and the clutch was broken and i had to ship it to canada and do a lot more to it :) but I'm happy with my overall purchase it's definitely no sleeper! The prices will definitely go up, im surprised they're not as insane as the other japanese or JDM cars but they should go up slightly relatively to them too! Glad I bought it last year and not now!
I said $8700 just before you said the price. I was contemplating a S14, a GSX, or a MR2 Turbo back in 2007 (when they were in the $6500 range still). I ended up with the S14 (which I still have and won't ever get rid of), but really would love one of these; as well as that MR2. My S14 is a rust-free CA car and will not get to see the Midwest salt roads. Keep yours the same way! Really looking forward to the build, Alex!
Don't know how I missed this video, but glad I checked your channel for just that possibility. Japanese cars of the 90's and 80's have a special place in my heart. My ' 86FC RX-7 was in a similar condition. Unmolested and well taken care of during my ownership from 1996 to around 2018.
Good shittttt. Love the transparency, appreciate your consistency, looks like lots of work goes into making one video, can tell you take this seriously. Mad respect. Also love the black Kompressor in the background. Lastly, your outro music is sick! Don't change your format bud, it works! P.S. I'll be using your Amsoil link. No kidding, Amsoil is the BEST! Been using it in my S55 AMG for years!
Loved my 95 GSX, one of the first, in emerald green.. Had the small front door pockets, vs the larger pockets of the later models. What a fun car 16G, AWD.. Long live the Good DSMs :)
I have a 97 Talon awd. Lightly modified, factory rear lsd. Under 50,000 original miles lol. Didn't realize it got so rare. I agree that the 4g63 exhaust sound is better than most 4 cylinders.
Former DSM guy chiming in with my $0.02 I would love to see you do a mix of DSM models to make a unique OEM+ build. 97 Talon TSI front bumper. 99 Eclipse rear bumper, wing, and side skirts. Finished in Pewter Blue Pearl (rare 2g eagle talon tsi color, but done 1 solid color like a eclipse. Not two-tone paint that talons came with) on 17" Bronze Volk TE37's. Super excited about this build.
I'm really excited for this build. Like you I'm a domestic fan, but in my twenties I had civic si and came up against these cars all the time. Takes me back. Love all your content!
I'm jelly Peter has my dream car. I've wanted a Conquest TSI since high school, back in 93. Every one I found since 2000 has been busted. Life on the east coast is ruff on cars.
I was always a trend setter so I knew a long time ago to buy a low mileage manual RX7 FC quickly before the prices blow up. Almost 9 years and its as reliable as a rock! Knock on wood.
I have in the past...Tore down my SAAB 900 Turbo with 478,000 miles....no ring groove....so miles sometimes if serviced correct.....not a problem. I only had turbo seal problem on original turbo at that mileage....Castrol 10w30 and oil better now...changed every 2000 miles.....
Who Alex that Eclipse is immaculate you took me back because I almost bought 1 years ago but was modded like crazy!!! Thanks for the Content I’ve been watching and leaning sense you started RUclips!!! Also love seeing you cruising down familiar streets in Sweet Home Chicago!!!🇺🇸

Bro What About The Supra
Super excited for this new build series Alex! I had a 1st gen DSM that I fully built years ago. I have one hard lesson I want to pass on to you. Upgrade the PCV / crankcase ventilation prior to upping the boost or upgrading the turbo. The factory system is too small and it will back pressurise the oil return on the turbo! I went through 2 turbos because of this. this can also be the reason you don't have an oil dipstick as they typically pop off from the crankcase pressure. Good luck👍
Sounds like solid advice so I'm voting it up ☝️
I knew what it was as soon as he was driving it. Lol the back seat and where the rear speakers were gave it away. My little brother bought a 92 eagle talon and it completely changed my mind on four cylinders.
Good advice. Upvoted

I was expecting it to be a stealth since it said jdm and american. Ironically the eclipse is very usdm and japanese, so the opposite of the stealth.
@@turbo_brian well that not really true the non turbo cars use a neon engine and the entire subframe and chassis are actually different, the turbo cars are all mitsu so a gst or gsx is fully Japanese
Beautiful find. Some things I would recommend thinking about replacing:
1: go to a helical center diff
2: poly bushings for rear diff and suspension
3: upgrade the synchros in the tranny (while you're in there consider upgrading other tranny internals)
Helical center differential aka Quaife is weak and prone to failure. 4 spider center and a front differential of your choice would be my recommendation. He will have a hard time finding parts for the transmission if he can't even find the turbo oil return line gasket which is still available (MR258477)
Poly motor mounts especially the lower
Somethings I would recommend: Entirely rebuild and upgrade everything XD

SO excited for this series. i picked up a 95 talon tsi awd 5 speed with the lsd a few months ago right in your back yard alex. bone stock, ice cold AC, clean rockers and strut towers. 95k miles!

@@LegitStreetCars apparently he’s not telling you. 😎
Couple of thoughts for a 'mature build' as you mentioned:
A Holset HX35W will get you your 500 HP reliably with acceptable EGT.)
I like holsets, I'm running an fp green on mine.
Don't go any bigger than a 17X9 on these cars. 18s look too big.

Its nice yea, but my fav looking is by far a 3000gt like Tavarish has..
Had an act 2600 on mine back in the day with a evo3 16g and never had any issues at 365whp. Loved that car but Wisconsin winters gave it cancers
My crank walked in my 96 Talon tsi, while out of state at around 80mph back in around 2004 in PA. Took a bus back up to NY and towed it back about a month later. It always seems to be exaggerated when hasn't happened to you.
@@Saiyan585 didn't say it never happened just isn't as common as people make it sound.
My '97 GST auto crank walked on me.
97 and up there were changes made I believe at the block cradle for the crank and CW is a non issue.
“Historically, the Japanese are known for their sneak-attacks” 😂😂
Love the energy Peter brings to the channel, and I love that you’ve gotten a *nice* GSX!

Can anyone explain how the 4G63 sounds so good as a 4 cylinder? It truly sounds fantastic for an i4
It is indeed the best sounding 4 cylinder by far. I love how the gear ratios are set because it makes it sound even cooler
Try the alfa romeo twin spark they also sound fantastic for a 4 cylinder
One reason why the 4G63 is so good is because it's actually the engine from the older models of the Lancer Evolution of the same era. It's an engine designed for rally racing. Mitsubishi gave the Eclipse GS-R and GS-X the 4G63. The base model Eclipse GS and the Eclipse RS got a different engine that barely hit 90hp to the wheels. A basic commuter engine. I've always loved 4G63s. Because it's so similar to the Evolution engines, you can pretty easily swap in a true Evolution engine into the higher trimmed Eclipse models.

To stop crankwalk:

So glad to see DSMs coming back into the light!! Good luck finding parts for that bad boy 😆
$8000 was honestly my first guess. I can't believe I was spot on. I love these cars and can't wait to see where you go with it.

Im fixing up my 94 gsx right now. mine is all stock with everything, still smells new. I did put a new headliner in. pulled the engine for a rebuild but ill keep it all original as much as i can. 102k on it.
Good find, drive line vibration could be the rear CV shaft on passenger side, gunk of grease on the mount 12:17
It’s not a foreign car like a Dodge Colt or a Chevy Spectrum. It’s a good old Muurican Mitsubishi!
The metal center plate on the valve cover. Mirror polish with the pearl white painted valve cover. Insanely beautiful combo
Yoooo! I had a 1G tsi back in the day my other two buddies had 2g’s tsi and gsx we “ran” the streets lol
4g63 for life bud!!! Can’t wait for this one
0:53 I LOVE WEEZER
Very cool! I had a 91 Talon TSI way back, put a 17G turbo on it, and some fuel and a intercooler. It was a high 12 second car back then.
Don't know how I missed this video, but glad I checked your channel for just that possibility. Japanese cars of the 90's and 80's have a special place in my heart. My ' 86FC RX-7 was in a similar condition. Unmolested and well taken care of during my ownership from 1996 to around 2018.
Love the sound of your plans 👌🏼
As a fellow ‘mature’ (on paper) car enthusiast, that sounds perfect 👍🏼
Good shittttt. Love the transparency, appreciate your consistency, looks like lots of work goes into making one video, can tell you take this seriously. Mad respect.
Also love the black Kompressor in the background.
Lastly, your outro music is sick! Don't change your format bud, it works!
P.S. I'll be using your Amsoil link. No kidding, Amsoil is the BEST! Been using it in my S55 AMG for years!
Awesome video. I had a 98' GS-T and it was great.... although it wasn't always reliable, I thoroughly enjoyed owning it.
I think it's awesome what you're doing with this car . One of my favorites growing up. Love your channel.
I'm really excited for this build. Like you I'm a domestic fan, but in my twenties I had civic si and came up against these cars all the time. Takes me back. Love all your content!
super nice mitsu.... but please keep the original front bumper and rear wing!
I'm jelly Peter has my dream car. I've wanted a Conquest TSI since high school, back in 93. Every one I found since 2000 has been busted. Life on the east coast is ruff on cars.
Yes known starter issues, the old knock it with a tool before or while cranking gets it going.
Simple replacement will fix it.
Like that some of your old videos are popping up! Always liked these eclipses! Hoping this was a series! I’m thinking 10k!
6 months later we have no other videos on this car. Im really sad right now
it's coming!
The eclipse was the 2nd car I fell in love with when I was growing up between that and a 3rd or 4th gen Camaro are my favorites always
I had 94 Awd and that car was a blast to drive. Can't wait to see the finished product 👍🏾✌🏾!!
