Hundreds of dollars spent on jazz-theory books. Hundreds of improvisation-tutorial videos watched. Decades of listening to Charlie Parker and of playing. And I got more out of this 16-minute video than all that, with a beautiful Daily Affirmation thrown in for free at the end.
The end is gold. I feel like that could be a great short. Learning things in 12 keys is still daunting to me after daily practice for 3 years. I'm just gonna learn stuff in the 3-4 keys I play the most. Thanks!
Scales is my biggest neglect and I appreciate the expert tips in improving my knowledge so I can play these more fluently, listening to how you explain it makes it so much easier for me to understand it and learn Jazz as I feel It's growing on me and I am loving this! Thank you so much for all you give!
I have to take anti-anxiety/overwhelming breaks tho.. set down the sax, relax&take slow deep breathing exercises bc I'm so excited & get so worked up w joy when I'm playing& sounding prety good that I am making very good progress in short time as well..(Whew! said that all in one breath) Sometimes I even spin around in circles for no apparent reason when i'm playing.. idk, what you think that is?@@drwallysax

Great as always Doc. Totally enjoyable. What got me was taking things out of the fundamentals book and thinking of those concepts to the Parker phases. 7th arpeggio up, chromatic down. As an intermediate player, what I am doing is listening to the phases you played, then repeating them by singing to get the feel of the style. Works wonders once the button pushing is figured out. Great video, Dr. Wally! I like how you broke the solo down into simple parts and did not inject contrived complexity, such as shells, cells, and encumbered enclosures. When you mentioned practicing in related keys and consider the shapes more than the individual notes, are you alluding to how the lines "fit" under the fingers and is musical? I have noticed that alto solos transposed to tenor and vice-versa are often too high or too low to be musical and don't sit well for the instrument. I think it is more important to practice transcribed solos untransposed to gain a better understanding of what's happening musically than to be able to win the technical prize by practicing Charlie Parker's solo in all 12 keys.

Hey there, good ear! It's actually the final prototype of my new product line. This is the Hyperion mouthpiece. The internals are a micro CT scan of Brian Curry's best Great Neck (ebolin, actually). It wasn't for sale but part of his private collection. We played his 20(ish) not-for-sale pieces and both chose this one. The facing and externals are being finalized into the updated product. So, an updated Great Neck in a new package!
Very nice video Wally. Sorry you don’t have a budget for a professional videographer, but I appreciate you not editing this down to 2 minutes removing every blink, pause, and breath. After watching 30 days of Bird, I have been inspired to study Bird myself. I’ve noticed he recycles “phrases” all the time. I bet I could find a dozen other tunes with these examples or close variations. Nice job…this was great! I appreciate the content and work put into these videos. And sounding great as always.
Yes, good ear hank! He has a vocabulary (that many many have copied). It's a great lesson in being an artist - he doesn't play like Hawkins, Desmond, Coltrane, and others - he plays like himself. He has a language, and uses it!

I once played at a jam session with a bass player who suggested we play "Donna Lee by Jaco Pastorius". He is no longer with us.
