"We're not building chords, we're building melodies", love that Wally! Desmond is one fo the few saxophonists that could get away with a bunch of harmonically adventurous lines, but nobody would notice really because of that silky sound. Great you point this out here! By the way, are you saying with this title we should rename our channel as "The Devil's Music"?
Hey Man! It's interesting, right? He made the (functional) dissonance seem melodic through affectation. You should ABSOLUTELY rename your channel The Devil's Music! How was your summer?
Very sweet lesson, love your sound and the takeaway-message. And your videos are a joy to listen to as well as to watch, the little details and the composition of the background, the choice of color. Yes, it doesn't go unnoticed! 👍
honestly the paul desmond one gave off a really lydian dominant vibe, quite pleasing to listen to. The gerry mulligan instantly reminded me of the intro of the miss marple theme xD. Great video as always.
What is the chords are built from scales? That's the foundation of that stuff. You talk about different scales that go through a court structure, chromatic enclosures, pivots and etc
When I first thought about trying to play jazz I thought, "I just need to learn the right scales." Ha. The use of the tritone is so varied. It seems to me that the #4, in some cases, especially when emphasized, creates a bluesy sound, something Paul Desmond did not do very often. (Hi - from nearby Charlotte, NC - for a week!)
Excuse me Dr. Wally, but I have a little predicament. I am fluent in the language of Tenor Sax. I'm playing on a school instrument, a nice old Selmer Bundy II like my alto. However, this means that very soon, im not gonna have a tenor sax to play anymore. i have about a grand even in savings, and dont expect to be able to afford anything nice right now, but now we come to the question. I need a recommendation for a good tenor. Ive seen almost all of your videos and youve taught me more than anyone else has combined, so I trust you got me from here. Im looking for something professional with just a beautiful sound for some jazz, but not so much that I can't play concert anymore. I have to play,in,the marching band, after all. I dont care much for what it looks like, i just want something a little fancy to make me want to practice even more. Im gonna go practice now while I can, but when ya got a sec, can you help me out?
Hey my friend, let's see if we can get you sorted! For 1k, I always recommend looking for a used Yamaha - good workhorse and you can always sell it for what you paid. I can't think of any new instruments for that price, but you can get a solid used horn for that budget. Good luck!

Start notes are Maria from West Side Story...
Beautiful example of the tritone interval! (that and the simpsons theme)
The lyrics are “the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard”
I love your sense of humor 😂😂
Awwww, thanks friend!
When someone creates a Comedy Club for REED players, Dr. Wally is a shoe in for the Headliner every night...

It's a miracle ... I'm channeling Desmond !!
Yesssssss!!!!!!
I'm using a Theo Wanne WATER mouthpiece on a Conn 7M.
Listening to you make me listen :)
Yay! For too many years I had my head buried in pattern books. Using your ears is hard, much harder, but sooooo worth it! Good on ya!
great lesson as usual
totally agree, scales are great servants but terrible masters.
VERY well put. Happy practicing!
Benny Carter. Genius.
indeed he was :)
Bro.. check out Benny's 1962 LP "Further Definitions" also featuring Phil Woods... epic solos therein...

I haven't watched Marvelous Miss Maple yet, worth a watch?
The Marvelous Miss Maisel - VERY worth a watch, both seasons! (The 50s are never outdated.)

Love your content, and not to be stickler but the time stamp for your Gerry Mulligans quote is actually 1:34 not 3:34 like it says in the video

The theme song from The Simpsons sounds like this.
