I was born in 1940. Don't know why I never heard of this album. Excuse is kids were born in '69 and'72 and had a lot of new stuff going on. Thanks for posting. It's 1 Am and I know I will listen to end. Probably close to 2. Need my zzzs but to good to listen to later.
What a terrific lineup-all great musicians. Gerry and Paul always sounded marvellous together but the whole band play well-a really nice upload-thank you.
How Many Times have I seen and heard these incredible '5'..Let me count the ways...Going way back to the '50's & 60's. from there on at various venous through out their fabulous careers. Live jive sessions mostly at California jazz joints. The start of West Coast sound, which sounded for so many a years. Brubeck serviced in the Army during World War 2. There is story of Dave Brubeck touring with an Army Wolf Pack Band during the war. There is on the internet an article of Brubeck's time while yet in unforme when he began his musical career ,touring time in Europe during the war entertaining the troops, not with military sounds of the days popular music.Go ahead on...look it up!..
When you’re a genius improviser you don’t need to think what to play, you just talk effortlessly , as simple as breathing, walking or dancing together with your best friends!
I have been listening to this music thanks to my cousin Larry. His collection of Big Bands and small combos such as these artists. Larry invited me to a jam at Elitch Gardens,Denver. Featuring Glenn Miller, orchestra and band, featuring in the mood lyrics gig. Sadness prevailed, Cousin Larry was a casualty of war in the Battle of the Bulge 1945. later his mother,my aunt knowing just how much I enjoyed Larry's collection passed a few 78's and couple of albums for my remembrances of Cousin Lawrence Martinez. Parts of the Glenn Miller movie was filmed in downtown Denver. Glenn met his wife Helen to be,both students at University Colorado.Major Glenn Miller,Army Air Force went missing in action on December,1944. Miller and three members were declared dead a year later.

Say what you will, but I think this group really brought out the best in Brubeck. I have seen so many videos of him playing that I've lost count, but playing with Jack and Alan gave him a rhythm section that was able to go with whatever crazy energy was flowing in Brubeck's veins. When he really started hammering the keys, they just played harder and harder and the whole group was incredibly alive. Don't get me wrong; the classic quartet had some amazing qualities too and a lot of incredible music wouldn't have happened without them, but I think Brubeck had some form of musical chemistry with Alan and Jack that no other group seemed to feature. Adding Gerry was already an ingenious move, but the soloist that Dave really shined with was Paul. I think, as a soloist, Gerry and Dave had similar ways of acting. They were constantly going "out there", while Paul had a restrained, composed and almost withdrawn approach. He was soft, gentle and incredibly witty as a soloist, while every other player in this group had a very wild side. I guess the wildness and raw energy surrounding Desmond made him go for some fresh ideas, which is kinda obvious especially during Sign Off. I have decided to hunt for every album by this group (minus Desmond, sadly) that I can find. I have two already and they're among my favourite jazz records ever.

Yeah, I was there. Dallas Brooks Hall Melbourne. Must have been 1971. Great swingng concert. Paul Desmond had left the quartet, but came back for the Aussie tour.
I started out on alto in Jr. High and the first time I heard "Take 5" I wanted to be Paul Desmond. I switched to bari in high school and the first time I heard "Song for Strayhorn", I wanted to be Gerry Mulligan. So to hear them both together: It's like being in a threesome with your high school and college sweethearts. Mulligan's wife donated his instruments to the Smithsonian to send on tour with info about his career. I saw them in DC at the library of Congress, of all places. I was so close to getting locked up on God knows what charges, but it was just me and his gold-plated bari in a glass case, calling to me; saying "Come, my love: we can finally be together!" But since I wasn't picking up the soap for anybody, I got out of that room and went upstairs to the copyright office to copyright my music and get out of there!
