I’m a Retired Automotive Paint Rep. (44 years). The finish actually “wrinkled” that’s due to applying another coat over the first coat, when the first coat wasn’t fully cured. The solvent in the second coat bit into the first and ate it basically. It’s a shame, the one heavy rolled coat is all that was necessary. These types of products like Trem-Clad, dry & cure very slow. 2 days between coats at 75f I’m guessing, double the cure time if it’s over applied. The directions on the can should have warned you about over applying, and second coat re-coat time. Great job thanks for the information. By the way, Sandwich chalking between Aluminum & Steel, they don’t like each other and will create corrosion within a year..!
Planning on doing this soon and really appreciate your methodical approach to the whole project and your in-depth explanations. Yes VHB tape is awesome, I have used it for signage for a few years and it easily survives the intense heat here of an Australian summer, in fact there is a large sign on one of the glass windows in the Sydney CBD, mounted 20 floors up, that is guaranteed by 3M to last 30 years. That's pretty impressive. Thanks heaps.
@@Adv4x4 awesome! Just watched part 1 of the 2nd build. Quality work bud! Def something id love to do one day. Just learning to weld myself. I must say... its quite addictive! 🤣🤣 keep up the great work and content!
I was wondering about the galvanic corrosion issue and then you answered it with 3m tape. Working on mine now and was on the fence about fender material.
Haha no sir, inspiration actually came from a photo of an Australian Truck towing a jet ski and KTM on a trailer behind it. From there I started looking for used jet ski trailers until I came to the realization I was capable of making my own. I’ll have to go give yours a watch though! Thanks for watching I appreciate it 👍🏼
Thanks Jeff! Had a lot of fun. I’m currently building a different style trailer. Part 1 of that is on my Channel now and part 2 should be up in a week or 2!
Did you mention what type of paint you used? I saw the primer name but not top coat... Very clean build, happy to see the Timbren suspensions installed. So cool.
Valspar Anti-Rust Armor! But thanks a lot for watching! Currently working on the second trailer build now, should be uploading part one within a couple weeks 👍🏼
Wow, great videos. Thanks for sharing all the details about the build and final product. Nice thing is you can get a lot of other gear on there with the bike or without. Would be nice to have a locking waterproof gear box, maybe on the front. For my build I was thinking about uprights and a place to put 2 kayaks on top. Maybe even removable.
Great idea, I considered that as well. Unfortunately with the wheel chock up front the truck swing out just barely clears it while it’s open so I don’t have room to spare in that sense. I’ll be making another smaller trailer made to hold a rooftop tent in the very near future with a rack etc. I will video that as well!
There is something about trailer builds that scratches an itch. Whenever I find one on RUclips I have to stop and watch. I really wish I have the time and place to build and or restore trailers.
I thought about this as well but I’ve dealt with mesh floor sagging in the past after use (trailer tailgate ramps) and wanted to avoid that situation all together.
So far so good! I’ve used the trailer to tow the bike and some canoes a few times now and have no complaints. My favorite part is how it isn’t noisy over bumps etc.
No specific reason! When im camping I leave the trailer hooked up and at home I have a bucket I use to prop it up. My initial reasoning for not adding one was to avoid rattles while offroad. For some reason rattles bother me a lot 😂
Sorry it took so long to respond! But I don’t remember the exact measurements. The part of my video where I’m designing the fenders I do talk about the axle deflection and how much space I gave to clear that. Maybe that will give you a good idea! 👍🏼
(For Virginia residents) First you need to print this application from the DMV website 👇🏻👇🏻 www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/vsa22.pdf Enclose the $5.00 fee in form of check with the filled out application. I don't really know anything about that lock n roll hitch, but I bet being relatively obscure and not at all common really reduces the likelihood of someone stealing it since they would have a real hard time hooking it up to their truck.
Yessir! Another plus side. I believe the company also sells their own lock for it. Added security in the off chance someone has a hitch available for it and you aren’t around.
if you get a trailer that you built inspected do you have to wait 3 years for the title? in my county filing for a lost title if it has no history on file with the dmv you have to wait 3 years after the inspection for a title.
That paint will last you an easy 15 years. I use it building trailer for the film industry. But hood luck to get it off. I had to wetblast it off for a color change once because it kills sand papper, even the 3m Brand!
Thank you sir! But yes, Not everyone is going to be hauling a bike with theirs but at least it’s a great base to build off of for their needs. I have another vin plate already from dmv. I may do a video series on building a small 4’x4’ trailer with a shorter tongue and rack for a rooftop tent and post It forsale after.
The floor area is 6’2” x 4’ Without the wheels, tires and suspension it is about a 200lb metal frame I’d have to guess 400-500lbs overall including wheels, tires, suspension, hitch, lights, wiring ect.
@@Adv4x4 Sweet. Came out really nice. I'm debating whether to find a used trailer as a starting point or build from scratch like you. Thanks for the video
Great build, but did you really need something that burly just for the TW? When I started watching this, I expected to see an off road teardrop style expedition trailer. Either way, well done!
Thanks! Yessir it is definitely overkill for just hauling a bike but I don’t intend for it to only serve that purpose. I also wanted it for Hauling materials from Lowe’s or anything of that nature. Plus one day it might transform into a tear drop camper of some sort. I didn’t want to have to build another one as my needs changed. It should be ready for whatever I throw at it. 👍🏼
I used a Baja designs dual sport headlight kit and their adapter harness. I’ve had a few questions about the headlight I may make a video outlining the install 👍🏼
I believe around $1600 but you could cut the cost significantly by using a standard hitch, a regular trailer axle suspension, and standard wheels and tires.

The frame and fender wells minus the timbren suspension wheels and tires comes in at about 200 lbs

How much you got invested into that trailer?
