@@Adv4x4 thanks, same here about the US, but Botswana is just in a different league, you drive behind a 40 ton truck and it suddenly slams on brakes for wild animals crossing the highway, mostly elephant. The Batswana are the friendliest people I've ever met. If you could only do one country put it on your bucket list!!!!
I've been overlanding in my Ford Expedition. When I return home to Texas, a trailer build is my top priority! I'm sick and tired of everything rattling around in the back, no matter how well I secure everything! LOL ... Also, I feel that a rooftop tent would just last longer on a trailer that would be stored in my workshop when not in use. I can't wait to see the rest of your build!
When I built a custom trailer for a family member. I put the metal on the inside of fender and on the top. Then squared off the front and rear for Jerry cans for fuel. We did that to both sides. On the front tongue to the outside I made brackets for propane tanks, water, and storage for jacks, tools, and such for break downs. In the bottom if the frame I used angle iron to act as bumpers and mesh to help protect the under side. Kinda a reinforcement for the frame. With all the bells and whistles he wanted. It came out indestructible. Has well over 50k miles on it and still going strong!
That’s awesome! It’s fun because the possibilities are pretty endless when making a custom trailer. Lots of fun to be able to make it exactly what you need vs what’s available for purchase.
@@Adv4x4 Exactly! Another family member liked the first one, he wants one. I will be making it this winter. I'm not sure what he wants as options but it's gunna be fun. I'm tig welding all the joints and frame. I will be also building a brush guard off the tongue so there is more storage and keeps it out of the sleeping space. Solar power battery box, tool box, propane storage, water Jerry cans, and fuel jerry cans. Or all fuel. He did say he wanted to try a small generator compartment in case batteries go dead. That way he can carry a small welder for emergency repairs. Just some things he's shared so far.
It's easy to learn. But it takes practice. I'd say the hardest part is finding your sweet spot. Meaning finding the settings that work for most metal thicknesses. I learned to Arc weld by being given the handle and being told to learn by myself. It took a few months and then I got the hang of it. Same with Mig and Tig. Tig welding I learned on car bodies. I was helping work on a '32 roadster. I learned real quick... And have been having fun since. I'm not the perfect welder everytime, but I've had nothing break since I started.
I know this is 3 years later but what welder type are you using here and on the overland roof top tent build also. I don’t know what welder I should get to start my builds for overlanding
If it would've been mean, i'd have to talk to the center bar all the way back and leave a short section out the back of the trailer. That way you could have a receiver on there. For hooking your you're bicycles or whatever. A little luggage rack on there or whatever. And then that way, you got a little bit more room to carry something.
Awesome work bro!!! New to the channel and Subscribed! One thing I will say, make sure you make a few Weep holes in the frame to release moisture. Man keep these videos going ! Can't wait to see more.

Theoretically, yes. But since it's a trailer meant to be taken offroad, there's plenty of opportunities to hit rocks and puncture your "air tank" I'd also imagine the total volume it could hold would be relatively low. A little 2 gallon tank mounted somewhere above the frame at the end would probably be more effective. Could even tuck it underneath the trailer with a skid plate, especially if you're already putting a water tank under

I'm WAY late asking, but I've been looking at building my own trailer using this system. You did pretty much exactly what i want to do, i even have a 1st gen tacoma its going to pull behind. My question is how did you determine what timbren system to go with in order to achieve desire ride height? I know i need a 2000lb HD system to accommodate finished weight, and the 16" 5.5 pattern rims with 32"x11" tires. I just havent been able to determine how far below the frame the center hub for the wheel hangs below the mounting point on the trailer. If I knew that, i should be able to figure out ride height by roughly adding 16" to account for tire height. I think anyways..
The following is for the 2000lb HD suspension systems. This is the distance from the bottom of the frame to the center of the hub spindle by model number. Looks good man! I’ve been considering building a trailer, as opposed to buying an already built, exactly what I want (still haven’t found), and affordable one (no such luck! Lol). Can’t wait to see the end product! Are you going to include a cost list? That may be interesting. Doesn’t have to be down to the penny, but it may be nice to know what you spent in materials and labor. Just a thought. I’ll be subscribing to keep an eye on what you have been doing, I like your channel so far!!
Thanks! I debated doing a cost breakdown, but I also include links to pretty much everything I use in the description! Thanks for subscribing it means a lot!
I know you haven’t gotten this far yet, but if you mount bare alyminum against bare steel anywhere the aluminum will sacrifice itself and turn to white ash. I recommend using a structural adhesive from 3M, 7333 and rivet the parts together. This will make it a lot stiffer and less apt to decay the aluminum or steel. I’m a high end Autobody repair technician of … many years. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the effort to help! I actually did use 3m VHB Tape to secure the aluminum. I cover it in Part 2 of the build which is linked in the description of you would like to watch. Thank you again!
Awesome job! Can’t wait to see it finished. I’ve been thinking about building one to get the tent off the top of my Jeep. They’re just too damn expensive! Subscribed!!!
I have another VIN plate from DMV so I may end up doing another build with a rack for a rooftop tent like you mentioned. Although I’d just sell it once it’s done. But I plan to make a video of that process as well!
I just finally got my lock and roll hitch delivered yesterday after waiting a month! So I will be installing that and finishing up the part 2 video very soon!
Thanks Matt! Tried to keep it straight forward and not make it drag out too long on things but Include as much info as I could. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I recently inquired at a Steel Supply Location. I can do most things easily, but I can’t cut steel flush, I have a Cut Off Saw but I don’t like the lousy way it cuts. I like your cutter but I don’t plan to do a lot of fabrication. Anyway! I contacted the steel supplier and asked them if they could cut the lengths if I gave them measurements, such as 6 pieces 5’ long, 10 piece pieces 1” square 4’ long and so on. They said sure no problem, over 25 pieces he said he’d have to charge me 10.00 How sweet is that!
It’s been a long time since I’ve personally watched the video so I’m not 100% sure where the confusion lies from what’s depicted. But I think I know what you are talking about! I didn’t think about how I would be welding them on top of the 1x1 that stuck out the side of the trailer. So in doing so that moved them up another 1”-2” which was fine for me!
So I've got a harbor freight trailer. What do you think I use that frame as a starting piece? I wanna upgrade the wheels and tires and add maybe a suspension? Your videos are giving me ideas. I have never soldered before tho.
Where do you source the steel from? I really want to build myself a trailer to put my roof top tent on have some storage. This is sweet! I’ll be looking out for part 2.
I personally sourced mine from BMG metals they are located in Virginia. I had them deliver the metal to my shop. You should be able to find places near you that allow for pickup or delivery to a business address! But thank you! I will be taking it on it’s first trip this weekend and finishing up filming then I can edit 👍🏼
I think somewhere around 1600-2000 I unfortunately didn’t keep close track. Although The cost could be cut significantly by using a standard hitch, and normal trailer suspension/ wheels and tires.
Appreciate it! Check out Part II to see it completed I believe I have it linked in my pinned comment. I will be building another one of a different style before too long as well👍🏼
Great Video! I am considering building my own trailer as well. Question did you consider aluminum per material vs steel? The reason I ask is due to keeping weight down.
Hate to tell you but the tongue is going to bend. You either need thicker material or taller. Like 2"x3" with the 3" being the vertical. My buddy used 2"x3"x.120" wall but didn't listen to me and put the 3" has the horizontal. It started bending the first time using it. He ended up cutting it out and replacing with thicker.
@@Adv4x4 HIs bent horizontally. His tongue is shorter then yours. It's probably heavier then yours. It's a fully enclosed sleeper with the spare and a rack up front.
Hey man, i’ve basically copied your trailer just made it a little longer for a teardrop camper to go on top of I’m currently waiting for the timbern axles to come in, I’m putting 3500lbs axles on mine, and want to get started on the fenders. How far out are The tires from the frame? How wide did you make your fenders? Great work btw.
Hey thanks man! My fenders on this one are 12” wide. Little under 2” from frame to sidewall of tire. I am actually currently building a micro camper as well. Video part series of the build will be posted as they are completed. Almost done with part 1 now 👌🏼
How much welding experience did you have before you did the frame. I did welding years ago and want to build a trailer. Also what do you think the frame will weigh?
I have done little bits of welding here and there for years. Nothing substantial enough to learn as much as I’ve learned during this build alone though. If you watch a few RUclips videos on welding and then practice you will find it’s not too hard. Also the trailer frame itself weighs about 118lbs 👍🏼
I explain in the video my reasoning, but mainly because I have a swing out tire gate on the back of my truck. So I wanted to be able to open that even with a bike loaded. As well as the longer the trailer the better it tracks and backs up. Aside from that other small reasons is to haul my 14’ canoe or 12’ pieces of lumber etc.
I agree! Later in either this video or the part two I mention it’s something I wish I did differently but I can always change that at a later time if I feel the need
Hey man! In the end a traditional axle will work just fine and save you a good bit of money. The ride quality won’t be there like with the Timbren but for most people a leaf sprung trailer will suit them just fine 👍🏼
Aside from the fact that I bought the wheels with those tires already on there; if you are towing an offroad trailer down a trail it is exposed to the same hazards the tires on the tow vehicle are susceptible too (sharp rocks, sticks, ect) So for that reason having a durable tire that can handle the trail it’s being towed on is important. Also if your trailer has the same lug pattern and tire size as your tow vehicle your spare tire now covers your trailer. As well as your trailer now covers your tow vehicle in case of the unlikely event that you need more then one spare to get out of there. 👍🏼
Hey, just came across this, nice work, I'm impressed! Bit of advice, keep your hood and bike away when you're welding, spatter can be a bitch on things you care about...
@@Adv4x4 thank you so much I'm going get the materials to build a 4x6 trailer tomorrow. Prolly will use the 2x2 on the frame and all my rails will be angle. Prices are ridiculous right now in louisiana. 2x2 box is $95 for 20ft right now. Angle is $37 for 20ft.
No problem! $157 for 24’ 2x2 1/8 last I bought some. I couldn’t believe how much it went up since my last build. If you go to my channel I actually built another trailer after this one of a different style of you wanted to get any more ideas 👍🏼
@@Adv4x4 oh yea I watched it. That's actually the trailer I'm going to build mainly for my roof top tent like urs. Ima use some 2x2 uprights with 1.5x1.5 inside of them and attach 2 linear actuators 1 on each side to lift the tent up. Try to keep weight as low as possible on the trailer. I currently have my RTT on my XJ but with the lift and so forth kind of a pain to reach and I could use the extra space of the trailer.
(For Virginia residents) First you need to print this application from the DMV website 👇🏻👇🏻 www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/vsa22.pdf Enclose the $5.00 fee in form of check with the filled out application. Mail it to the address at the top left of the paper Eventually, they will mail you back an assigned VIN plate and your paper. (You can avoid the wait if you visit dmv in person with the paper filled out) Install VIN plate as per instructions on paper. Call your local state police department and they will send out a trooper to inspect the trailer VIN plate installation. He will sign the paper and return it to you. Bring the signed off paper back to DMV and they will issue you a title & tags 👍🏼
6’ the angled supports extend probably 2’ so 4’ of unsupported tongue. Which isn’t necessary but it’s what I need to let my tire gate open with the trailer attached
Going into this project that was something I was worried about. Considering I’m self taught. I have a good friend who does structural welding for homes such as spiral staircases, railings, fences, ect. He checked out the build when I started and assured me it was going to be just fine. This trailer has been in service for 6 months with no issues.
Offroad is a square, and overland is a rectangle; I'll explain. Offroading is just that driving or operating a vehicle off of a road, but overland is both offroading and onroading (if you can follow my make believe words) makes it the rectangle as it could be a square (offroading) or could not be a square (onroading)

I like your cutter but I don’t plan to do a lot of fabrication.
Anyway! I contacted the steel supplier and asked them if they could cut the lengths if I gave them measurements, such as 6 pieces 5’ long, 10 piece pieces 1” square 4’ long and so on. They said sure no problem, over 25 pieces he said he’d have to charge me 10.00
How sweet is that!
Just wondering why you ended up mounting the mud guards much higher than what you had mocked up on the cardboard?
It’s been a long time since I’ve personally watched the video so I’m not 100% sure where the confusion lies from what’s depicted.
But I think I know what you are talking about! I didn’t think about how I would be welding them on top of the 1x1 that stuck out the side of the trailer. So in doing so that moved them up another 1”-2” which was fine for me!
This is awesome. Upload part 2!!!
Just finished filming part 2 today 😎
So I've got a harbor freight trailer. What do you think I use that frame as a starting piece? I wanna upgrade the wheels and tires and add maybe a suspension? Your videos are giving me ideas. I have never soldered before tho.
Check out the link below they have kits to upgrade your exact trailer 👍🏼

@@Adv4x4 step by step video would have been awesome. But thanks for the link.
Maybe I will have to do a build on a HarborFreight trailer in the future and record it.
Should always measure corner to corner as well. To make sure you don’t have a parallelogram.
Yessir! Just wanted to get the point across as easy as I could for someone maybe just learning to do things like this.
Adv4x4 Awesome build Brother! What are the axles brand and model number? Best Regards and Keep Safe!
Appreciate it man!! They are the Timbren axle less 2000lb HD!
Check the description of the video I have everything linked there!
@@Adv4x4 Awesome and Thank you for responding back!
Of course!!
Good job
Good job. Looks good.
Loa neumáticos están situados el proporcion 60/40, el apoyo de la carga a 50/50
Excellent project 👍
Thank you!
Can you give information about the name of the apparatus that the wheels are attached to?
They're very expensive. 1T straight axle kits are $299 and the Timbren axle pairs are more like a GRAND.
you know someone is really into off roading when you see a tw200 on the back.
One of the best forms of Offroad transportation in my opinion!
What welder did you use? Need to learn how to weld before I tackle this.
Hey man! It’s a Klutch 140i I’ll put a link for ya!
amzn.to/3uut2NC
Thank you I’ll do my research!
No problem good luck!
awesome work
Thanks mark!
I’m wanting to build something just like this wondering how much did it cost you for the full build?
I think somewhere around 1600-2000 I unfortunately didn’t keep close track. Although The cost could be cut significantly by using a standard hitch, and normal trailer suspension/ wheels and tires.
cool video. curious to see how this works out for you
Appreciate it!
Aluminum wasn’t necessarily an option for me since I don’t have the means to weld it more am I familiar with the process of welding aluminum!
I do wish I did the supports from the front corners up but other then that it’s only purpose is to haul a canoe or a 280lb bike
@@Adv4x4 HIs bent horizontally. His tongue is shorter then yours. It's probably heavier then yours. It's a fully enclosed sleeper with the spare and a rack up front.
Great Job! what is your Timbren Specs or part number? Are these HD's?
Thank you! They are the heavy duty and rated for 1200lbs I have the link posted in the description along with all the other parts!
No need to sleeve the bolt holes for the swing axle mounts?
No sir I did not do that, but I can’t imagine it would hurt to do either if you wanted to go the extra mile 👍🏼
Good info ! 👍
Thank you!
A 6 foot tongue on a 6 foot trailer seems excessive. What was the reason for making it that long?
I explain in the video my reasoning, but mainly because I have a swing out tire gate on the back of my truck. So I wanted to be able to open that even with a bike loaded. As well as the longer the trailer the better it tracks and backs up. Aside from that other small reasons is to haul my 14’ canoe or 12’ pieces of lumber etc.
You need your 45 from tung to trailer to go to very edge so it don't catch on rocks ,trees exc.
I agree! Later in either this video or the part two I mention it’s something I wish I did differently but I can always change that at a later time if I feel the need
Anyone have any opinions on timbren axle & less vs traditional axle for building one of these??? 🙏 Thanks!
Hey man! In the end a traditional axle will work just fine and save you a good bit of money. The ride quality won’t be there like with the Timbren but for most people a leaf sprung trailer will suit them just fine 👍🏼
@@Adv4x4 thanks for the advice brother!!
Of course!!
Honest question. Why have all terrain tires on a trailer?
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching.
Did you post part two?
Sure did! Linked below.

Also have completed 2 other trailer builds as well you should check out!
I was thinking about doing a build exactly like this. Would you be able to list the exact timbren axle Stock numbers and hubs you purchased?
Sure thing I’ll put it in the description!
Parts list added in Description
Did you use all 2x2 1/8 thick?
Yessir for the main frame 2x2 1/8 and for the fenders 1x1 1/8
The XJ don't have much room for me and the kids along with all the millions of thing they have to bring lol
One year I put 4 nails into the same foot workin around in the back yard in croks lol
Hahah thankfully no injuries for me yet. I’ll say when I was building my deck I did wear boots just because of the sawdust 😂
How do you register this to the DMV, home made inspection level?
(For Virginia residents) First you need to print this application from the DMV website 👇🏻👇🏻
www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/vsa22.pdf
Enclose the $5.00 fee in form of check with the filled out application.
Mail it to the address at the top left of the paper
Eventually, they will mail you back an assigned VIN plate and your paper. (You can avoid the wait if you visit dmv in person with the paper filled out)
Install VIN plate as per instructions on paper.
Call your local state police department and they will send out a trooper to inspect the trailer VIN plate installation.
He will sign the paper and return it to you.
Bring the signed off paper back to DMV and they will issue you a title & tags 👍🏼
Any chance you want to sell that white grill behind your hood?
Send me a DM on @Jbrochu_ on Instagram
What setting on your mig
Not sure to be honest I do a few test welds and dial it in before doing more welding!
Dude your mouth did all the work.
Would you sell a rolling chassis? If so, how much $?

is part 2 out yet
Filmed the rest of part 2 today will be editted soon 👍🏼
Please send me a complete map and size of this trolley
Sorry but I do not have a schematic of the build.
12’ 2” overall length
main frame is 6’ long by 4’ wide
6’ wide from fender edge to fender edge 👍🏼
nice ! greetings from Argentina
Way out there! Thanks for watching 👍🏼
I do all my projects in crocs even raptorlined my jeep in them 🤣
Hahah they are just too convenient and comfortable😂😂
How long did you make your tongue?
Total length of the tongue/backbone piece is 12’
@@Adv4x4 How about from the front of the tube to the front of the square of the frame?
6’ the angled supports extend probably 2’ so 4’ of unsupported tongue. Which isn’t necessary but it’s what I need to let my tire gate open with the trailer attached
could you write the dimensions please?
EVO chop saw would have saved you hours of time
bolt on fenders are tlts
Great effort on this build, I’m currently looking for inspiration and this has helped a great deal. #4x4fabrication

Some of the welds looked cold to me...and he dressed them for cosmetic appeal.
Going into this project that was something I was worried about. Considering I’m self taught. I have a good friend who does structural welding for homes such as spiral staircases, railings, fences, ect. He checked out the build when I started and assured me it was going to be just fine.
This trailer has been in service for 6 months with no issues.

When people call it overland instead of what it really is, off road.
I couldn’t agree more. “Overland” is a key search term and puts these videos in front of the right crowd 👌🏼
Offroad is a square, and overland is a rectangle; I'll explain. Offroading is just that driving or operating a vehicle off of a road, but overland is both offroading and onroading (if you can follow my make believe words) makes it the rectangle as it could be a square (offroading) or could not be a square (onroading)
i got the same mask lol

nice video until you cranked that trashy music......goneeeeeeeeeeeeee

I was really enjoying the build until the bloody shitty music. Sorry
