So, there will be a classic actress video to follow this one. If you want somebody included now is your chance to say Edit: I’m almost done so too late now
Thank you for including Clint Walker. He didn't get nearly the recognition he deserved when he first came on the scene, and he still doesn't, so it was gratifying to see him on this list of Hollywood classics. From all I've heard and read about him, he was the most honorable of them all.
@@debbieandmarc I can believe that about Clint Walker. I saw his daughter interviewed years ago, and I was very impressed by her! She was not only physically very beautiful, she was extremely humble and polite with no interest in show business. She said that her father had bought her a plane because she had always been interested in flying and had given her flying lessons from a young age. This was before the airlines would hire women as pilots. She said very humbly that she hoped one day they would hire women and that if they did, she hoped she would be one of them. There was no anger and no threats of a lawsuit as there would be today, just quiet humility. I'm guessing she works for an airline today. I was so impressed by her, I thought what a wonderful father he must have been.
Only a few of these surprised me, but most of all, Yul Brynner! He had such presence that when he walked into the screen, you couldn’t watch anyone but him! He always seemed 6 ft tall!
I always Yul was huge. I was just as surprised as you. I always thought most actors were short when in reality most were massive. Sheesh. Completely different from the women, where most of them are almost two feet shorter.
I agree, thought he was at least 6' tall. He looked very buff, especially in The Ten Commandments. I never could figure out his accent, but learned recently he was born in Russia, and traveled internationally when he was young. He also studied classical guitar, which I never knew.
I had an opportunity to meet Christopher Lee once too, at a film-festival in San Jose sometime in the 1980s. Believe me: He was every bit as tall & cool-yet-intimidating up-close as he is on-screen!
Met him at KVIFF in the Czech Republic with his wife and extensively talked to him during the afterparty. He told me he was an Inglorious Bastard and was dropped by parachute here in Czechia during Hitler´s Third Reich to kill German Nazi officers. He also praised fruit duplings, Czech beer, and Czech girls. But when his wife gave him "the look", we finished conversation about the topic, haha. But he was very kind. And yes, freaking intimidating as hell, but without trying. He just looked like that.
Thanks for including Robert Donat. He’s one of my favorites and I didn’t realize he was 6’ tall. He was a great actor, though he’s largely forgotten in the USA today, unfortunately.
I fell in love with him in "The 39 Steps." "Knight Without Armour" "Tartu" and one about a clinic doctor in Britain who tended coal miners. Always the hero! ❤️
I remember years ago I tried to get the autograph of David Niven ..he told me to eff off...but when I got the signature of Vincent Price he was really charming ..and asked me what his favourite movie was ...celebrities eh !!
I remember David Niven on chat shows promoting his many books. Always seemed a bit big headed to me. Vincent Price was a true gentleman though. He found out that a young co-star of his wanted to be a professional artist, so he organised and paid for an exhibition of her work and she was able to give up acting and make a living from painting.
I met Paul Newman in a grocery store in NY many years ago. I thought he was very small. I see he was average height in those days, but on screen he looked so tall! No doubt perceptions change when you see them in the flesh.
I wonder if he started shrinking at a fairly early age? I reckon he probably was his peak height at one time of day but judging by some of the comments I’d say he probably started to shrink in his 40s. He’s probably not been his peak height since the early 70s
every other record i have ever seen has him as SMALL around 5ft 6. Same for Steve Mcqueen-who had tantrums re the filming of The Great Escape as he did not want to appear small compared to for example James Garner whose height has always been noted as around 6ft 3. In fact the small Scottish actor who is often in scenes with S.Mc was cast partly because S.Mc felt he made him look taller, ( sorry actors name escapes me) MANY of these heights are nonsense according to other (many other) sources!
@@suziecreamcheese211 I've had many beloved dogs & cats throughout my life. But there have also been several bunnies along the way...partly because they're so dang cute & probably partly because of "Harvey". I loved that movie as a child. Still do!💙🐰💙
I've heard numerous numbers for Audie Murphy and his height. Anywhere from 5'3" to 5'7" and everything in between. I think he was maybe a shade over 5'5". Regardless, it is said he could clean out a bar in a brawl. If I had to be in a foxhole with someone and the odds were against me I'd want it to be Audie Murphy. Unfortunately not many of the newer generation even know who he was.
@@DataWatch. It doesn't surprise me that there are people who do not know who Audie Murphy was. I teach at the college level, and you would not believe what the average college student today does NOT know. Early on, I learned when I walk into a classroom never to assume that the students know anything unless the subject I'm teaching happens to be directly related to their major. Even when this is the case, though, they rarely know general information outside their major since people in their teens, twenties, and thirties rarely read anymore. They are too busy playing on their phones and (with males anyway) playing video games. You would think I was making it up if I told you some of the questions I have been asked. So it doesn't surprise me that there would be people who do not know who Audie Murphy was. Reading what this amazing hero did during World War II is almost incomprehensible to me. As I posted earlier, he should have been given two Medals of Honor. It always annoys me to hear an athlete referred to as a hero. What has any athlete ever done that is remotely equivalent to what Audie Murphy did? I cannot imagine the degree of pride this man's parents must have felt about their son!
It's amazing how Hollywood is always able "average out" the heights of actors so there isn't a big contrast between them playing in the same movie. A result not by accident, but probably from the work of many skilled behind-the-camera people.
Leading men who were short often stood on boxes when with a tall leading lady, or the woman stood in holes or walked in trenches. Sometimes when a couple is walking straight away from the camera, you aren't seeing the leading man with the woman, but a stand-in. This was also done with good guys and bad guys.
@@DataWatch. Read my reply above. With only a couple of exceptions, leading men HAD to appear taller than the leading lady, or every other woman, and had to be as tall as the bad guy, except when the smaller leading man was supposed to defeat a much bigger man. Leading men often stood on boxes, or leading women stood in holes or walked n trenches. Often, when full body shots were want, the leading man would have "his" back turned, and the viewer would actually be seeing a stand-in. This is rare today, but it is still done on occasion.
My son spent three years in LA where his girlfriend was a RUclips actress. They went to the occasional party, and he saw many stars on the street. He was always amazed at how small they were (He's 6'4") compared to how big they looked on screen.
You should see Debra Winger. I estimate she is 4 foot 4. I saw her in person at a rally for Michael Dukakis when he ran for President in the Democrat ticket. I was there with a group of Republicans protesting the rally in Connecticut. Everybody, both Republican and Democrat, was whispering about how incredibly short she is. She was wearing six inch heels and a tall top hat in an attempt to appear tall. When she was in a movie with John Travolta who is over 6 feet tall, she had to stand on boxes next to him. In a dance scene, they had to use a stand in for her and only filmed the stand in from the rear.
I lived in New York City in the '00s. My boyfriend and I would see celebs on the streets all the time. Every night one of us would say, "I saw _________ on the street today." And the other would ask, "Were they celebrity small?" 😆
Just goes to show you that the camera angle and actor position in a shot can make all the difference as a lot of the shorter actors appeared much taller on screen while the taller actors were often portrayed as of average height!
While living in Toronto years ago, we were driving along Queen Street West and we approached a police station. There were several cops standing around in riot gear and all of them were short. Then we realized they were filming the Robocop TV series.
The grouping is well done. To see the contrast between the different type of actors and find out they are the same height is surprising. Love these lists. So interesting.
Excellent production! I particularly liked the music and how all the celebrities "magically" appeared in the line up. I would like to see some "contemporary" stars added to this, in particular the ones I have heard are short. I am only 5'7" myself, and I would like to see some "short-stuffs" who made it good. In particular I am thinking of: Herve Villachez, Vern Troyer, Michael J. Fox, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, Paul Simon, Andy Summers, and Warwick Davis. Thank you Sir!
Thanks for producing such good videos. Nice to see Ted Cassidy and Richard Kiel at the *top* of the list. As a boy in the 1970s I just assumed that "Lurch" and "Jaws" were the same actor, but as it turns out, they had a height difference of six inches.
Living on Martha's Vineyard year round for over a decade it always surprised me to see Hollywood celebrities in person. So tiny! Seriously, I am a 5 ' 9" woman and I towered over most of them, particularly the men. They didn't like that. If you wonder why Hollywood actresses are so short, it's to make Hollywood actors look taller. Simple trick on film.
But there's also a talent factor. Some of the greatest baseball players were very short, and listed at heights even half a foot taller than they were. The thing is, you have to be able to hit a curve ball. There's always an essential function, and you must be able to perform it. I'd never make it on Martha's Vineyard. They would tolerate my uncouth habits, but I'm just not a communist.
@@anonymike8280 Take responsibility for your statements. Give us your basis for calling all residents of Martha's Vineyard "communists." You do know how expensive real estate is there, and how people made the money that allows them to live there? You do know what the meaning of "communism" is?
Bing Crosby, Yul Brynner, and Paul Newman were kind of amazing to me. I'd have thought they were all taller, Glenn Ford and Burt Lancaster were surprisingly taller than I expected. And you left out little Audie Murphy, war hero, actor, and Texan...so one of my favorites.
Fred Astaire was 5'9"! He thought at the time, when they were casting for the 'Band Wagon', that she, Cyd Charisse, may have been too tall--so did she, so she wore flats and crouched slightly at the knees! She was 5'6", I believe! No problem, then! My favorite of all Fred Astaire's partnered choreography! Check it out if you have not! The 'Dancing In the Dark' number. Wonderful! ❤
I was shocked to see Fred listed at 5'9"..... I seen him listed at 5'6" in other sources, and judging by the actors around him early in his career, and in some of his later guest appearances, 5'6" is more accurate.
I had pictured several of those guys as being somewhat taller than they actually were and a few others not being as tall as they are, I never knew Clint Eastwood was well over 6 feet tall.
I always thought that jack Nicholson was way shorter than that. In the 50s/70s I worked in Soho London in Butchers shops as well as growing up there. We often would see up close, famous actors and tv stars( they have to eat !). It was always a surprise when you see their actual height. It's because in scenes with fellow actors the other actors would be taller making them look shortish, or in the case of the leading actor being short, they make sure others are mostly the same height or shorter.
Fun video; thanks for compiling/posting. As for the distaff side, I've recently made a list of my favorite actresse born before me (1950), and I have no doubt they'll all be on your list (by birth year): Barbara Stanwyck (1907), Hedy Lamarr (1914), Ingrid Bergman (1915), Lana Turner (1921), Kim Novak (1933), Shirley Jones (1934), Sophia Loren (1936), Claudia Cardinale (1938), Francesca Annis (1946) 🤠
I looked up Fess Parker - he set his family up for generations by creating a gorgeous winery with 5 guest suites and 14 rooms. What a wise and thoughtful man!
This was too fun. I am 63. When I was a teenager in the 70's, one of my big Hollywood crushes was Yul Brenner (my other big crush was Cary Gary. Yep I was the weirdo). It was kinda disappointing to find out I was taller than he was. I did get to see him on stage in 'The King and I'. That was awesome! I was, and still am, taller than a lot of the 'big' stars. I am only 5'10". I don't think that's considered super tall for a woman today, but it was when I growing up.
The average height for a woman in the U.S. is still only around 5'5". You, dear statuesque lady, are still in the upper echelon of female height. I had a friend of similar height to you and I constantly had to tell her to stand straight, because she was a shy girl who didn't want to stand out. The funny thing is that I am extremely short, and would be blinded by the sun if standing at the wrong angle and time to look at her.
I am 62 and also 5ft 10". I used to be 5ft 11" but had a knee op in 2009 and lost an inch in height. I was painfully shy as a teenager, and hated standing out in a crowd. I loved it in my twenties though, and have had some gorgeous hunks as boyfriends over the years. All my favourite actors though, are shorter than me. My all-time favourite actor is James Dean. He was 5ft 8" (not 5ft 7") as told in this video. One of his girlfriends was Elizabeth 'Dizzy' Sheridan - and she was 5ft 10", but she said he made her feel very feminin and it felt to her, like he was taller than her. He had long legs and she used to borrow his jeans!! An ex with whom I lived with for 8 years, was 6ft 1 & a half", and I used to borrow his jeans!! On the whole, I love being tall, but sometimes I'd just like to be petite. I've always been slim, and did a bit of modelling in my 40's.
I loved this! I've often wondered about the height of many of these actors. The way you presented them with many eclectic photos and the really fun music got my attention. I'll check out your others too.
Nice seeing Sterling Hayden, my personal favorite actor. I always heard he was 6'5", and it's definitely believable. He always had the most powerful screen presence.
Good video with a great list and in an interesting format and hypnotic sound track. Lots of effort went into it you can tell. If you ever feel up to it to do another video like this one, there are others I'd like to see compared: William Holden, Edward G. Robinson, Walter Brennan, Erick Von Stroheim, Tyrone Power, Elisha Cook, Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Harry Belafonte, Lawrence Harvey, Richard Basehart, Lee J. Cobb, John Williams, Eli Wallach, Strother Martin, Brock Peters, William Powell, John Gielgud, Peter Falk, Danny Kaye, Robert Shaw, Paul Scofield, Ray Milland, Robert Ryan, Vincent Price, Albert Finney, Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, Lee Strasberg, Dean Jagger, Montgomery Clift
I’d love to do a part 2 one day. If I did I’d include all of these. Including Errol Flynn who I wrote down but forgot to put in. I’m just working on getting my Monetisation back which I feel I deserve. It’s dependant on that because it’s a lot of work. I’m sure you understand
I think that Robert Taylor was taller than what is said here, he was 182cms tall. And I missed 6'4" Jeff Chandler and Lex Barker. Excellent compilation, congratulations!. Thanks
This is great and clearly well researched. Interesting that there are always a few "shocks" - I would have imagined James Mason and Glen Ford as only about 5'6" but here they both are, at 5'11"! A fascinating resource tool, thank you for compiling it and I can't readily think of anyone you've missed.
I was a bit surprised with some of the heights. I thought a lot of them were taller. But I new Jaws would be the big man. Also didn't think Clint Eastwood was that tall !!!! Well done my friend 👍
Seems like most stars of the Golden Era of film were quite short. Maybe with the better nutrition, exercise, etc., people just got taller. In any case, thank you for this very interesting video! I particularly enjoyed the photos you selected and the funky music in the BG.
My best friend ran into Tony Curtis as she was entering an elevator and he was exiting the elevator, in Beverly Hills. She is 5'5" and they were eye to eye. From what I have read, James Arness is 6'7".
I could put google heights but then I’d be wrong. It seems like Curtis must be a shortie these days, few people said they’ve seen him and he’s shorter. But I do think his peak height is at least 5’8. He was born in the 20s so I’m guessing unless she saw him over 50 years ago he would have lost height by then
Brando and Redford's heights amaze me. I expected both to be above 5' 11''. And Peter Ustinov carried himself like a bigger man. Alan Bates too. Conversely, James Mason is taller than expected. Paul Hogan at 5 feet 8 is two inches shorter than expected. Cheers.
@@DataWatch. awe, no worries! I just wanted to add him to your list. It’s a very informative and surprising post! Thank you for doing the research and posting.
Great list and thank you for making this video. But you missed a few: Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, Artie Murphy, Raymond Burr, Ron O'Neill, Fred Williamson, Richard Pryor, Al Lewis, Montgomery Cliff, Duane Jones, Robert Wagner, Jack Lemon, Walter Matthau, Jerry Lewis, Philip Carey, Fattie Arbuckle, Jack Krugman and Tony Randall.

my aunt and chuck conners dated when he played for the boston celtics back in the 1940's. we have some pictures of them at my grandmothers house. it was a little before my time.
Bo Svenson is over 6’6” maybe as tall as 6’7” and muscular. He is a US Marine Corps veteran and holds a 4th dan black belt in Judo (the first dan being awarded by the Kodokan in Japan). He was probably one of, if not THE most physically formidable actors from Hollywood.
1 height they got wrong, however; Orson Welles was 6'4", not 6'. As for George Kennedy, I remember he said once that his size helped get him some of his earliest acting-gigs, by playing bad guys on "Gunsmoke." The reason being that, as he put it, "Jim Arness needed big guys to hit." (In other words, if Matt Dillon beat up _too_ small of a villain, then he'd end up looking like a big bully...) I never knew for sure how tall Gregory Peck was, but I know his hands were *_huge._* I saw his handprints in cement at Grauman's Theater in Hollywood once & from their size, he probably could've picked up a watermelon with one hand...
www.celebheights.com/s/Orson-Welles-1912.html Welles claimed to be 6’4, and he wasn’t the only one who claimed to be taller than he was. I think it’s possible he was 6’1 but no more
@@DataWatch. I've read 3 biographies of Welles & they all agree one point: that he was 6'4" (according to his draft-board records, among other things. Incidentally, he was deferred from the military due to a bad back.) Also, if you watch him in "Citizen Kane," you will observe that he's just a bit taller than Joseph Cotton, who was 6'2". So...that being the case, I'm going to rely upon published, verified & annotated biographies rather than a link to just another website (since the Internet is notorious for spreading false, misleading and/or inaccurate information & misinformation, after all.) So...sorry, but I'm right.
@@MrPGC137 weird because he only claimed 6’3 at his tallest. Cotton is 6’1.5 in my opinion and Welles barely looks taller. Thing is, you can look at an old film but you don’t know if they are wearing lifts or anything. Weird how if he’s or sad 6’4 and it was so obvious that the average guess on celeb heights is barely over 6’ 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔😳
I adore Buster Keaton, his looks, innovation, surrealist film work and his otherworld far away thing he had about him, plus he was the same height as me lol! I read that he was 5ft5.5 to be exact (which is my exact height!) Super video, the poses make them sort of look like they are all in an animated film!
Supposedly Buster Keaton was a really nice guy: supported sports clubs in his neighborhood, financially helped people down on their luck, and his home was a meeting point for various relatives and people in the neighborhood. There are a few vlogs about him out on youtube that are pretty well done.
Daniel Craig , the worst Bond of the lot ( IMHO ) is 5 feet 8 inches .Nicole Kidman did a film with him and said she was very surprised at how small he was.He wore " lifts " on his shoes throughout the film ..
Clint Walker was actually 6'5" and 6'6" in boots. The press often reported him as 6'6" but he was a good friend of mine (I run his official fan club on Facebook) and he told me himself he was 6' 5".
@@DataWatch. please show us where Clint himself ever said that. You should know that back in the day, the studios employed publicity staff who created a lot of what went into print and a lot of it was exaggerated or made up.
@@DataWatch. Many years ago I saw 'Send Me No Flowers' on TV and when they squared up to each other Clint Walker made Rock Hudson look small. I remember my dad saying. 'Wow, this guy is massive, he must be 6 foot 8'.
@@DataWatch. you can't believe a lot of those old articles. Most of them were made up or exaggerated with misquotes in order to sell papers/magazines. Clint got to the point where he didn't want to do interviews any more because of it. I knew Clint personally and not only did he tell me, he was 6'5" and 6'6" in boots, I can see it in the pictures we have standing together.
He was written down and left out by accident. I think he’s a tad shorter band would have been listed a little under that had I remembered to put him in 🤦🏻
Alan Ladd was short at 5'6'', camera angles were aways looking up when they framed him. He and George Peppard hooked up in the most vicious movie fight in the Carpetbaggers. You could feel every hit.
For a while people thought the correct height of Alan Ladd was actually 5'4". Hollywood placed only short people around Ladd, no one taller than him. I'm assuming Ladd may have worn elevator lift shoes that put him at 5'8" which would be far more workable for Hollywood back then.
They used holes, boxes and clever camera angles. The most successful thing they did was to keep casting Veronica Lake as his leading lady as she was tiny.
Keep all these mag' vids coming as im enjoying every 1 of them immensely. Man, Karloff looks dauntingly evil even in profile All gr8 actors ; u can tell the older generation as most suited an booted as gents were in them days (when not in character clothing like Brynner /Howard/Wilder etc).
This is great. Some surprised me. Their talents were huge. Great video. I’d like them compared to today’s stars like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp.
@sparky3156 I sat next to Mickey Rooney in a restaurant when he was older. His feet couldn't touch the floor when he was seated. I'm 5"1" and my feet could touch the floor. Judy Garland was 4"11" and they were on par. I actually think he was close to being a little person. Massively talented.
I could be wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that Humphrey Bogart was 5'6" and they would often film him standing on a crate when he had scenes with certain actresses.
@@DataWatch. Since I posted that, I've googled and some sites do say 5'10" but there are much older articles that show his feet with block shoes strapped on to his street shoes.

I had a big ad come through mate and it’s only just finished as I walked away. I will need to review a bit later for you champion I’m driving down the farm in two minutes. I hope your holiday was great and the weather was even better for the family. 🍻
Actors were much shorter in the early to mid-50s. You were okay at 5'8" back then. 5'9" was even better. 5'9" seemed to be the golden grail of minimum height because Hollywood could make you look taller than 5'9". Everyone assumed Robert Redford was a six-footer when he was only 5'9". After the 50's being 5'11" was terrific because at that height you automatically looked tall in Hollywood films. After 6'0" everything was extra icing. There was diminishing returns it seems after 6'1". You were already tall enough and didn't need to be taller all that much. Sean Connery proved that 6'2" was tall enough.
I'm pretty sure Lee Marvin was more than the 6'1" listed here. Burt Lancaster is given the same height and that's about right - in The Professionals Marvin was noticeably taller than him. About 6'3" I'd say...
www.celebheights.com/s/Lee-Marvin-1011.html I think there’s an argument he’s a smidge taller but that’s all, not 2 inches. Just think it’s a classic case that Marvin is a big 6’1, to the point where he’s arguably just over. Thanks
@Just think he’s credited with 6’2 but many experts gave him lower. Celeb heights have him 6’1 and a quarter but the forum where you can predict yourself has him even lower. I definitely think he’s more 6’1 than 2
So, how do we form our idea of how tall someone is, when we have only ever seen them on screen? The most fascinating thing I learned from a "film school" course I took in the 2000s was about eye lines and camera placement. In the classic visual syntax of films or TV you can tell almost immediately by how "our" (the audience, represented by the camera) eyeline lines up with that of a character what part they will play in a scene. If their eyeline is slightly above ours, they will be heroic, if they really look down on us a lot, then they will be dominant or manic, if its about the same then they will be neutral, if we look down on them a little then they will be subservient, if we look down on them more than a little, they are a victim in some sense, or about to be killed. So, if someone is always playing heroes or commanding characters, it's likely that we most often see them on screen with their eyelines slightly above ours and subliminally register that they are a little taller than us. These conventions still apply in many modern productions, but less than they once did - though they are still pretty much universally used in things made for children or young teens - in cartoons and cartoonish live action movies. These visual syntaxes are so very subliminally familiar to everybody that shows like "The Simpsons" make comedy out of subverting and reversing them - but without ever needing to explain the joke. If you watch films or TV made before about 1980 then these eyeline hints are pretty much universal - with very few exceptions. Conventions of camera height placements are one of the main means by which we gain our impression of the height of on-screen people we have never met - and why if we do meet them, we are often surprised by how small or tall they really are.

Yes, Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier in WW2 being awarded every medal the US Army had. He also was field promoted several times from Private to Lieutenant. He suffered from what is now called PTSD, which is very common with WW2 servicemen who saw combat.

Most people seem to think he’s shorter and claim he wore lifts. Don’t think he ever admitted it so unless they teleported themselves back in time I’m not sure how they know. @@DataWatch. No way is John Wayne 6'5"! Compare his height to Rock Hudson when they were in a film together, and Hudson was clearly a few inches taller.

@@DataWatch. I don’t see many famous people very often so I remember this very well. It was the late 90s, closer to < 25 years ago in the Barbary Coast. Only a few of these surprised me, but most of all, Yul Brynner! He had such presence that when he walked into the screen, you couldn’t watch anyone but him! He always seemed 6 ft tall!
Yea I get you
I always Yul was huge.

The fact that Pink Panther is taller than Pharoah blows my mind lol
I had an opportunity to meet Christopher Lee once too, at a film-festival in San Jose sometime in the 1980s. Believe me: He was every bit as tall & cool-yet-intimidating up-close as he is on-screen!

@@edwardsmcintyre9014 he’s there. It looks like I’ve made a mistake by leaving a slight gap before putting the big guys in. He’s at the end mate

I ran into Vincent Price in the airport inFt Myers and he was very friendly and spoke to many people while waiting for his luggage. A very nice man.
I felt that too when meeting Paul McCartney.

You are a bit late on this one, about 10 people have already said. I won’t lie I’d not heard of him but I’m only 46 lol
@@B25gunship
For what that man did during W.W.II, he should have been given two Congressional Medals of Honor!
@@dennishalford5763 thanks friend, there are so many comments about him. He sounds like a gem 💎
It's amazing how Hollywood is always able "average out" the heights of actors so there isn't a big contrast between them playing in the same movie. A result not by accident, but probably from the work of many skilled behind-the-camera people.
Yea you are not the first to suggest. I get many comments saying they thought the tall guys were a bit shorter and vice versa
Yea I can imagine
Hollywood can perform wonders. Or, just let them stand on a box. Also, many male news broadcasters are very short.
@@Aztec339 yes true

Living on Martha's Vineyard year round for over a decade it always surprised me to see Hollywood celebrities in person. So tiny! Seriously, I am a 5 ' 9" woman and I towered over most of them, particularly the men. They didn't like that. If you wonder why Hollywood actresses are so short, it's to make Hollywood actors look taller. Simple trick on film.
Yea good theory
But there's also a talent factor. Some of the greatest baseball players were very short, and listed at heights even half a foot taller than they were. The thing is, you have to be able to hit a curve ball. There's always an essential function, and you must be able to perform it. I'd never make it on Martha's Vineyard.
My dad passed by Yul Brenner on the street in Chicago one day and was surprised at how short he was.

Errol Flynn, 6’2”. Which means Peter O’Toole was the perfect height match to play the character based on him in “My Favorite Year!”
He was written down and left out by accident. I think he’s a tad shorter band would have been listed a little under that had I remembered to put him in 🤦🏻

@@DataWatch. Flynn writes in his autobiography that he was 6'2". Studying photos, it seems credible.
Alan Ladd was short at 5'6'', camera angles were aways looking up when they framed him. He and George Peppard hooked up in the most vicious movie fight in the Carpetbaggers. You could feel every hit.
Camera tricks eh? Somebody said yesterday they swore he stood on a box in a scene in one film 🤣
@@DataWatch. I thought they dug little holes for the actresses to stand in, when they went for a clinch.
@@williamstroker6805 maybe they did
For a while people thought the correct height of Alan Ladd was actually 5'4".
Great job. Surprises at both ends of the spectrum.
I wouldn’t know, I never did watch those old films
This is awesome! I knew of 99% of these actors.

I sat next to Mickey Rooney in a restaurant when he was older. His feet couldn't touch the floor when he was seated. I'm 5"1" and my feet could touch the floor. Judy Garland was 4"11" and they were on par. I actually think he was close to being a little person. Massively talented.
Massively. With girl shoes she would have matched him
I could be wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that Humphrey Bogart was 5'6" and they would often film him standing on a crate when he had scenes with certain actresses.
I’m glad you said that. People keep trying to tell me yes 5’10 🙄
In The Big Sleep the Martha Vickers character tells Marlowe (Bogart) that he isn't very tall and he replies "I try to be."

Thank you so much! Heatwave here but coming to an end. Hope all is well
Actors were much shorter in the early to mid-50s.
To be fair the classic actors seem to have been taller on average than todays guys
That's what l am , it's well tall enough 👍

I'm pretty sure Lee Marvin was more than the 6'1" listed here.
Burt Lancaster is given the same height and that's about right - in The Professionals Marvin was noticeably taller than him.
About 6'3" I'd say...
www.celebheights.com/s/Lee-Marvin-1011.html
I think there’s an argument he’s a smidge taller but that’s all, not 2 inches. Just think it’s a classic case that Marvin is a big 6’1, to the point where he’s arguably just over. Thanks
Marvin was 6'1" Lancaster was around 5' 9/10", not much taller than Sinatra who was very short.
In painted wagon he was smaller than clint eastwood

Lee's smaller than Wayne, Stewart or Strode in Liberty Valance. Not short by any means, but the shortest of the four
And where was my all time favourite? Errol Flynn😢
My apologies. Written down but not added in the confusion of making. 6’1
@Just think he’s credited with 6’2 but many experts gave him lower. Celeb heights have him 6’1 and a quarter but the forum where you can predict yourself has him even lower. I definitely think he’s more 6’1 than 2

Wow thank you. I did my best
Thank you for all your research ❤️ I was surprised by the height of some of the actors.
No thank you 🙏
So, how do we form our idea of how tall someone is, when we have only ever seen them on screen?
Nice take on it. Probably true as well

I’ve see lots of contradicting views about John Wayne’s height. The most commonly reported height I’ve seen for him is 6’5
Most people seem to think he’s shorter and claim he wore lifts. Don’t think he ever admitted it so unless they teleported themselves back in time I’m not sure how they know. @@DataWatch. I don’t see many famous people very often so I remember this very well. It was the late 90s, closer to < 25 years ago in the Barbary Coast.
