  • Just off I-70, near the Moab exit, is the town of Thompson Springs. You drive through the town to access to Sego Ghost Town and the Sego Indian Art Panels. This area was a coal mining town between 1910 and 1955. A railroad spur was completed in 1918. The town never grew beyond a few hundred people. A flash flood in the 1950’s essentially wiped out the few remaining people in the town of Sego.
Thompson Spring contains the remnants of a by gone area which we see on our way to the Sego Art Panel and what’s left of the town of Sego. The access road into the canyon is gravel and accessible to two wheel drive vehicles.
After driving through Thompson Springs, the first attraction is the Sego Art Panels. These panels feature three types of ancient Indian art. You will see the Barrier style which is between 2,000 and 6,000 years old. The Fremont style dates back to 300 to 1300 A.D. The Ute style is the most recent. In addition to the primary panels, are figures across the road located on private property.
In the video the types of Indian art show Ute, Fremont, and Barrier from left to right
After visiting the art panels, you turn down Sego canyon and go past the cemetery. You will also pass by remnants of the rail road spur that was used to haul coal from the Sego mine.
You then encounter old foundations and wooden structures. The most visible is the large stone building which was the general store. The collapsed building was a boarding house. We also show the old powder house that stored powder used for blasting in coal mine.
We drove deeper into Sego Canyon and would caution against driving through gullies and dips if there is a threat of rain.

We’ve always wanted to go to Moab and the surrounding area. Didn’t know about this ghost town or the Indian art panels. So cool. So much history here. Enjoyed seeing it with you.

Are you guys back at the cabin? Plan a trip to Moab in late fall to avoid all the people. All the national parks are over crowded right now and you have to find the areas less traveled.

We are back in NY. We have a friend who rides his bike at Moab, and he’s told us the same thing.
