After playing the story i felt that the open worlds were good, not bad but not great either but they served their purpose very well and gave a very nice to fresh air to the game. I thought to myself that the open worlds were quite empty but now thinking back on it that is a good thing from a gameplay and a story sense, I dont think gears fans would enjoy the typical 1000000 mediocre things to do formula ubi has. The open world in gears is very simple, primary missions, secondary missions with some bits and bobs inbetween that reward the prying eye with very powerful weapons. This is exactly what the game needed to have a good balance of downtime and gameplay, however I feel like the open world travel times were to serve as nothing more than just time wasters so they could squeeze story in overall.
Ubisoft as a developer is probably the best in the market right now. AC odyssey, wildlands and fc5 were some of my favorites of this console generation.
@@KingLouieXD 1st, I didn't pay $60 for this, I got the game on gamepass.. 2nd, not placing random bullshit all over the world doesn't make it a lesser game...
Dr. Manhattan because the game is absolutely full of content, with horde, escape, versus, and campaign, that it doesn’t need a packed open world. There are still a decent amount of little side quests and stuff, but it’s generally just a chance for you to chill out for a bit, enjoy the character banter and scenery, and go from place to place without hassle. It’s not supposed to be like the Witcher
Irrelevant to the game but relevant to Microsoft. My girlfriend went to Gamescom in a wheelchair a few weeks back and she had a really good experience there with the Xbox staff as soon as they noticed her coming in the direction of the booth they were super helpful and friendly and she was able to play the game she'd wanted to try out. I've personally never played any of the Gears games as they are not my cup of tea but i do think that Microsoft deserves commendations for going the extra mile when it comes to accessibility for people with disabilities or impairments.

Mass Effect has been killed. The mess the 2nd tier rejects from Bioware made of it with their identity politics and lack of skill wrecked it. Perhaps in another 10 years the stank may have worn off.
No just remaster the original trilogy on the Unreal Engine and hire the same voice actors! Please for the love of god I promise it will make money, EA!
@@KingCraze22 I'm convinced the executives at EA need a gamer consultant. They make so many terrible decisions that even a casual gamer would point to them as being awful - even purely for business purposes. It's sort of like hiring the executive from a manufacturing company to sell artwork. If they have no passion or taste regarding the art to begin with, they'll have a hard time making decisions that rely on knowing your consumer - thus hurting the business.
@@zybch My guy, the game had a lot of problems. It was shaky at times technically and the writing was far below standard quite often. Exactly 0% of that had anything to do with "identity politics". It was a half-baked money grab for sure, but it had a lot of potential.
Thanks for bringing up the accessibility options, MS has been giving players more options to play instead of the "games are too hard" comment some journalists keep spouting
I've seen plenty of journalists calling for more accessibility options, but the arguments sort of fall into line with one another. Either way it's a great thing and absolutely kudos to MS for making such a great effort here
@coon the baboon I think he meant that instead of Microsoft making a game, like sekiro, easier for a person with one arm, Microsoft has given them the ability to play sekiro, for example, by making a controller that works for themselves, so they have the opportunity to beat it, or have fun trying to just like everyone else. All without giving them a 'press x to win' that no one else is given. TL;DR for you it's a fluff word but for a seven year old with only three fingers it means they can play any game no matter how hard with a equal opportunity to be just as good as you or me, even if it some like darks souls, or halo.
@@logandenton6467 basically what you said, they busy creating an entire eco-system of different styled controllers, buttons, that gives people a chance to play games, regardless of its difficulty settings. because it was never the difficulty or challenge of the game that prevented people from playing but the lack of tools that will allow them to play. Someone who is "disabled" will probably struggle through Darks Souls more than abled bodied gamers because to some its less of challenge than everyday life

@@smithdennard4547 But you can choose to only play w/ or vs other controller players can't you? MS have repeatedly said in official statements that they are firmly behind letting the players choose who to play with & that they will always give you that option/choice in those games. Now they can only guarantee that for their own FP titles (which GoW 5 is) bc that's what they can control. They can't control what or how 3rd party devs do it, but they strongly advise them to follow their example if they do. Besides, there aren't many 3rd party cross plat games anyways. Most are from MS actually, which they pioneered esp after being the 1st to even support KB+M, which AFAIK all give you that option. They are most definitely aware of the potential issues & have already planned countermeasures for it before even allowing it. Idk about GoW here since I haven't played it yet but don't doubt it's the same. Just look how committed MS are to making this & their games accessible w/ all its accessibility options & their diff special controllers for the disabled, etc. So why wouldn't they? No one else in the industry puts even close to that amt of effort. They carry thru on their promises. At least now they do w/ Phil in charge. They're all about inclusion & options now. That's like their thing, motto, w/e.
To be fair, he's kinda got a point there. I'm loving me some Halo as its been my go to game franchise in my childhood and early teens, but Halo doesn't have an outrageously great overall story. Its the individual moments, the soundtracks, the action set pieces and the variaty of gameplay elements and levels that make the overall experience shine the brightest. Its the whole package that is greater than the sum of its parts. A Halo can be a fantastic game with a horrible story, because all the other aspects can carry it around so well. Going through some repetitive designed levels like that of CE's Control Room was still fun because of how well Bungie used that opportunity to make the next room feel different with music, new set of enemies and so on. Still heresy, so time to send the Arbiter.
DerultimativeOzzy I think the halo books and comics are a big part of the reason why people put Halo up as high as they do when it comes to storytelling
Gears is and remains THE cover shooter. Not a shooter with cover mechanics tacked on but an honest to god action game developed around its core mechanics.

I was able to get all the skins I wanted without spending a dollar and it gave me long term things to chase while enjoying the amazing gameplay in the short term. Don't skip this one!
I agree. I managed to unlock dozens character and weapon skills without spending a single dollar. More games should take this approach. I do feel like a lot of the content was withheld for the seasons, but given that they didn't cost additional money and the breadth of content that was available, I gave it a pass.
Nathan Miller first of all better graphics for it, and also gears origins are from Xbox, pc is lucky that Microsoft lets y’all play gears and most people that play pc play gears on Xbox Edit: and I admit most games are best on pc, but gears is best on Xbox

Can confirm aswell, latest 2 nvidia drivers 436.xx have these issues. I just finished GoW4 to prepare for this release and encountered this issue after 20-30 mins of playing. Rolled back to 431.60, fixed all of these issues. We'll probably get a Gears 5 Game Ready driver, hopefully on time for release.
I guess at least with this series thats been made primarily for AMD (xbox) hardware, they perhaps don't have the same level of QA for nvidia's stuff? Then again, nvidia have a pretty bad record but that could just be from having the lions share of the PC market so most gamers will play on their stuff thus thats where the most problems will show up.

Unless most those vids are focused on the online multiplayer status and updates maybe? Long time gears fan and i love gears 5. My favorite campaign. The open areas showcase a sense of scale and surprisingly immersive. Im glad they weren't littered with enemies and a bunch of collectibles. The snow area had a sense of dread and mystery. The desert showes a different perspective of Sera. These areas also revealed tons of lore about the Locust and UIR. IMO best game in the series. A lot of us gears vets will nitpick MP tweaks but overall very polished.

I hate to be that "well akshully" guy but I have to point out that it's not a PC "port". It's just the PC version/build of the game, developed together with the console version. Port usually refers to it being previously only available on platform/system X and/or Y then _later_ work (sometimes difficult and a lot) is put into _porting_ it to platform Z for example, not even necessarily by the same devs. Awesome review anyways! EDIT: forgot to mention, this also has Play Anywhere, which i 100% think is mainly how Microsoft is gonna dominate a market for the next generation. i think i played 1-3 back in the day by borrowing them all off friends, but i can't remember hardly any of it. I got them again on microsoft store to replay them but the old ones did not age well to me. they arent bad exactly, it just still feels like i'm backtracking. however i also grabbed Gears 4 and would like to play that and then get Gears 5. seems like a neat romp harking back to the "hoorah" games of yore. I was becoming a teen back then and i only got into games like gears, halo, and cod because thats what was popular in my groups (though halo ended up being pretty fun long term), but its still enough of my life to give me that good ol dose of nostalgic feeling over the mechanics.
I feel like the open world is making gears come off as a lot more pensive and thoughtful, creating a scenario where in a game you'd expect non-stop action from, sometimes you just have to accept the time between highlights, and the fact that your alone with your thoughts during that time
After finishing the campaign on insane and re-upping in multiplayer and completed 50 waves of horde AND got an escape character to Lvl 18 this game is the best in the franchise. the campaign is the easiest yet by far the easiest insane completion but probably my favourite campaign with very surprisingly great writing. And after checking out GoW4 recently... Ew... I was impressed by how bad everything except the shooting part was (I really liked the shooting though). It was and every will be Gears of War: Youngblood for me. But seeing this review i feel kinda conflicted. I liked GoW lore and GoW4 almost pulled the star wars episode 7 on it (acting included) but this one should be with better acting, better shooting, more weapons/tools and better PvE modes that i love. And with bigger maps that was the biggest thing that spoiled the fun of the shooting in GoW4. All that while retaining the atrocious characters and mediocre story revolving around them. P.S. Family melodrama is absolutely NOT the essential part in gears series! It was essential part of Dom's character development but it was revolving around Dom and not his family. It was strengthening the emotional connection to already good character and now it makes things worse by attempting to duct tape new atrocious characters to the old ones. Relationship to a good character doesnt make a new character good, you need to actually develop a character and add relatable emotions and not fill it with fart jokes, stupid giggles and cheerful rock, paper, scissors games in the middle of apocalypse

Ubisoft as a developer is probably the best in the market right now. AC odyssey, wildlands and fc5 were some of my favorites of this console generation.

Dr. Manhattan because the game is absolutely full of content, with horde, escape, versus, and campaign, that it doesn’t need a packed open world. @coon the baboon
I think he meant that instead of Microsoft making a game, like sekiro, easier for a person with one arm, Microsoft has given them the ability to play sekiro, for example, by making a controller that works for themselves, so they have the opportunity to beat it, or have fun trying to just like everyone else. All without giving them a 'press x to win' that no one else is given.

Now they can only guarantee that for their own FP titles (which GoW 5 is) bc that's what they can control. Hey! It was heresy!

I was becoming a teen back then and i only got into games like gears, halo, and cod because thats what was popular in my groups (though halo ended up being pretty fun long term), but its still enough of my life to give me that good ol dose of nostalgic feeling over the mechanics.
lol.. " you were becoming a teen back then" long ago, in ages passed...
Ps5 gonna dominate next gen
New to Gears, 5 being my first gears game. If I had to define the game with one word it'd be fun. Great review.
I feel like the open world is making gears come off as a lot more pensive and thoughtful, creating a scenario where in a game you'd expect non-stop action from, sometimes you just have to accept the time between highlights, and the fact that your alone with your thoughts during that time
I love Gears I hope the series never ends tbh
It's cool that they just gave a free campaign DLC the other day

Hype!!!!! That's awesome that it changed your mind so much. Super exciting

Wow I may have to play this one. Great review by the way. (Praise the Memes)
Having split screen is awesome, no matter what. Enjoying games with friends in person is slowly coming back
After finishing the campaign on insane and re-upping in multiplayer and completed 50 waves of horde AND got an escape character to Lvl 18
this game is the best in the franchise.
the campaign is the easiest yet by far the easiest insane completion
but probably my favourite campaign with very surprisingly great writing.
No spoilers but the things that happen in this game are genuinely heart wrenching i almost teared up.
the horde mode is just a slightly moee chilled out version of gears 4 horde. its a decent enough formula that provides grindy fun
escape is a much welcome new addition sort of set up like a destiny strike for reference but with an emphasis on speedy efficient clears to get more frequent rewards
versus is versus... if you like gears versus youll love this 👌
I would say Gears 1 and 4 are easier on insane. It may seem easier with Jack, but that's the key. It is almost impossible without Jack.
@@slash4216 jack is garbage compared to a longshot and a gl lancer lol
gears 4 was much harder than 5 those fuckin bots and that cemetary level lol
Agreed! it it makes me want to go back and play the others.
I wouldn't say the best in the franchise, but it comes pretty close.
It took me 3 years to finish gears 2
Haven't gotten past the berserker in gears 1
Wish i could get 3,4 and 5
I loved Control outside the performance issues so hopefully I agree with you on this one more, looking forward to it.
Same! I loved Control WAY more than he did.
I would buy control because i absolutely adore remedy's work, but i've heard that it chugs alot and can even crash on xbone/ps, so im not sure if i should buy it :/
@@OvercastCoob the issues seem to be based on a mixture of PS4 temp, the HDD, and other issues. I am on a base PS4 and have ZERO (at this time) texture pop-in, and have had very few frame rate issues. The frame issues are there but it is by far not "unplayable" but to each their own.
I have had no crashes of the game.
@@OvercastCoob I'm on a launch PS4 and the game's frames tank pretty hard sometimes when it gets chaotic. I can bear through it but it needs addressed soon. No crashes yet so far. I'd wait if you have this long for a stability patch.
Control is awesome but yeah, the performance is quite bad.
Thank you for the review Ralph, have a good day!
Marcus: It's Fahz, right?
Fahz: *clears throat* Yea yes sir.
Marcus: Shut the fuck up Fahz.
Lmfao got me good.
I wasn’t excited for Gears 5. I didn’t pay any attention to it at all until the reviews came out. What an awesome surprise! This game is damn good
5:20 are you joking? I feel like the new characters don't really have good big personalities, like the first characters can just be described with 3 words but the new characters don't have the same plus
Did people forget about forza horizon 4? I mean i know MS lacks exclusives but i feel they still do high quality exclusives.
Sadly forza got bashed by more reviewers for being another generic Forza/driver game
FH 4 was my GotY last year but I played it on PC, that's all they've really nailed up until Gears though. Exclusives need to be system sellers and you can't really rely on an open world racer (racers are kinda niche) to sell a $400+ console and nothing else.
I'll admit unless you're into open world mature story driven game from Sony no.37, Sony aren't exactly killing it either. I call my PS4 "The Persona 5 machine" because that's basically all I play on it now.
@@MichaelJP I agree, I play a handful of playstation titles and while they are fun to run through they are just single player experiences and I'm mostly a CoOp player.
Single player titles last me about 1-2 weeks even with work, so I prefer something with online or at least a 2-4 player experience, something Sony lacks aside from half ass tacked on experiences like uncharted MP.
And before anyone attacks this comment, let's be serious when is the last time you heard about any Esports for Sony games?
It has borderline 5 stars, its very well done, an open world racing game done fucking great, the only thing it's missing is the ability to destroy cars, I've never gotten over how great burnout felt.
Well sadly I have to pass on it because of no Toyotas.
I think the highest praise i can give SkillUp is that i'm literally listening to his reviews right now as i would a podcast, while playing PoE. Doesn't matter if i want to play the game he's reviewing or not or have already played it.
6:06 oh god that made me spit out my water 😂😂😂
Gears of War has been a game I've played ever since I got an Xbox 360 and I fell in love with the franchise as soon as I heard the chainsaw on the lancer or the boom of the hammer of dawn. I've just got my Xbox One X as well as Game Pass so I can't wait to play this game when I'm done with a few others. Great Review SkillUp!
As someone who hasn’t played Gears since 2, I’m really happy to see all the excitement and positivity for the new game.
There are a TON of callbacks to gears 2 in this game my man.
I love gears. I had no God damn clue this game was coming out.
How is that possible? 😂It's been hyped for a while now! It's even plastered over the Game Pass ads
@@Maesterful never seen anything about it as well. Then again that might come from the fact that I refused to buy action-shooter set piece games because certain companies keep fucking em up in the latest years. This game reignites my lust for simple action games!
yeah men neither
Then do you really love gears
Me too, I thought it was releasing in November lol
Skill Up, would u maybe give Vigor a quick Look at. Its a fun game and needs more attention
Indeed it dose
Great to hear you liked it but I'm gonna watch after I finish the campaign! :)
yeah ,definitely didnt expect all the spoilers , im new to his videos lol
DOM KILLS FENIX.
Jk. 😅
Appreciate the nod to those who’ve never played any Gears game. But watching this video I think I’ll give it a try.
Holy shit you're popping these reviews out recently I dig it. Much love brother 💪💪
lets not forget that the same guy that voices marcus, voices jake the dog
Oh! That’s pretty cool!
Bender from Futurama :)
Is this what you got to review in aug during your ff14 playthrough?
18:49 - that's the type of gameplay I was looking for!
I've played GoW1 and 2 and i totally loved it. Marcus Fenix is a character of legendary badassery and not in stupid cheap pretentious sort of way like most games (and movies) nowdays try to emulate.
531st oof I feel you about gears of war 4 it was bad the writing and everything but gameplay was bad but I’m telling gears of war 5 pulls it off I’ve played since gears 1 I still have my gears 3 sticker and gears 5 ranks up high on my gears list really great game
Great review, thanks!!
They added microtransactions and charged you 5$ for the iconic curbstomp that was in past games. Games as a service is ruining games by insulting gamers integrity. Idk, its sucks what's happening to gaming now.
Man. I am happy for Xbox. Good on 'em. Gonna play on PC!
UltraViolence I think M$ finally realized that putting their exclusives on Steam is the way to go now.
I’m still not playing you people in ranked crossplay though.
@@timothywillox8564 its kn the windows store I think
@@kerninjathefrog6569 it's on steam and windows store
Glad you noticed the accessibility options. Those types of thing need more attention, like you say is a small part of gamers but still I'm sure it means the world for them
you have an amazing voice acting for your reviews tho Mr. SkillUp
19:00
Looks like someone took the '100's and 1000's' thing to the next level, good god.
4:50 damn that dialogue and writing sounds on point
Jesus the voice acting is unreal!
Gears fanboy alert. Calm down
Sam W2 God forbid people enjoy the game they’re playing. Go fuck yourself, lol
@@samw2670 bro I haven't owned an Xbox since the 360.
I just know good voice acting and dialogue when I hear it. This shit is top notch.
Coming from someone who doesn't like Xbox.
Alright, fuck off
"It's Fohz, right? Shut the Fu*k up Fohz"....and that's when I immediately went out and bought this game. Lol...
Best reviewer on RUclips. Love your stuff keep up the great content.
The early advertising for this game just didn’t do it justice. Very happy that I’m this excited right up to release.
Gears 5 is brilliant, not a huge fan of Kait's story, but the gameplay is still great. Hopefully we will see Gears 6 this Sunday!
Yeah i think the new trilogy has a good and serviceable story i do wish it was a great and different story but overall despite alot to critique they are good games well optimized and alot of content. Eday could really redeem coalition and gears 6 could be great again like the OG trilogy
