  • Halo Infinite is always fun, but it is also awkward and compromised. Where Halo Infinite's multiplayer has charted a clear course for the future, the campaign continues to live in the shadow of those that came before it.

    Thing about the pilot wanting to go home is, he has a point. The chief always survives and wins, but those around him, not so much. Humans especially have a rough time of it.

    • @cilo468
      @cilo468 2 года назад +151

      Perfectly said. I felt like skill up was missing something. The only one of Chief's companions that live is the arbiter, a badass elite with an energy shield and the ability to cloak almost on demand. No humans survive. Not even Johnson. Sure he was badass and an amazing character, but the thought that chief was a winning machine and he was practically invincible while with Chief cost him his life eventually. I think the pilot is going to be a voice of reason. Just a human who wants to survive to attempt a somewhat normal life again. Hell if Chief had just got his ass wooped and I was abandoned in space for months I know I wouldn't trust Chief. I would sure be acting like the pilot and would be nervous as hell and want to live. I'm tired of all the marines just saying "You got it Chief." I'm glad the pilot wasn't another marine who just said yes and stood back while Chief did his thing.

    • @Topher7527
      @Topher7527 2 года назад +73

      Comparing the pilot to Johnson is definitely unfair, too. Johnson was an experienced leader and a Spartan I. The pilot is just one of many pilots. One who had been adrift for some time before finding Chief and had just witnessed the UNSC get beaten, despite it's many advancements since the Cov war.

      @dickiewongtk 2 года назад +15

      Yeah, but remember how marines were all excited and high-spirit when chief show up in previous halo games? Even when they are facing certain death? Halo was supposed to be cartoonish power fantasy, that why i have no problem with the graphic issue when the 2020 demo first came out. But i guess time has changed, it is all about realistic human emotion nowadays.

    I really like the perspective of, “we don’t need a masterpiece; we just want a good Halo game.” Over the past 6 years I saw so much discourse in the Halo community about whether this game would bring back the fever pitch of hype that it got in the 2000s, and the insinuation I got from that was if Halo didn’t make a cataclysmic cultural impact like the old games did, then this installment would have failed. I think Halo infinite is exactly what it needs to be: a good Halo game. That’s all I wanted from it, and from the looks of things, that’s what it is :)

      I get what you’re saying but still, that’s a pretty sad perspective to adopt. Years in development for a Halo game with a great sandbox but not much else. Infinite will come near the bottom of people’s lists when talking about their favourite Halo games and that’s honestly just kinda lame. A hugely limited multiplayer with deplorable micro transactions and a repetitive single player with a weak narrative. If you’re satisfied with that then that’s fine. I feel like you could also argue that Bungie's original "design" of chief as an inexpressive peerless warrior also hurts 343's ability to transform him. There's not a whole lot of room to work with. Although the stories of the original trilogy were nuanced, they weren't nuanced because of chief. He's always done his job, and just happens to be very good at it. No more, no less. Even when he made the risky decision to pursue Cortana and the flood-infested warship, the defense of mankind and Earth was still his central concern. The evolution, split and fall of the covenant provided factional politics, and the Arbiter provided a story of personal transformation. Chief has never personally undergone a fundamental transformation as a character.

After numerous franchises have gone that route with mediocre results, I can honestly say that my younger self was wrong. A great, in depth, and thoughtful review that I couldn't be happier to disagree with. Some of the critiques of Infinites repetitive geography have merit but personally I loved the story and the characters that brought it to life. I feel like this is a perfect blend of 4/5's dense, emotional narratives and the classic Bungie stripped back 1-liner extravaganzas. Chief shows real depth even when he's speechless. There's so much emotion conveyed through body language and subtle lines here and there. I also thought the Weapon provided much needed levity to counter Chiefs baggage. Fair play on the villains I suppose but Halo has never been about 1 big baddie with a ton of complexities. Even the Prophets were fairly 1 dimensional megalomaniacs and that never detracted from my enjoyment of the games.
    But I can't be mad at opinions so clearly and thoughtfully put to video. But to everyone else, the game is fucking phenomenal and generally the story is very well regarded, make up your own mind! 😀

      It truly is. I don't know why this was decided, but it was clearly one that was made early on. So there must be a reason. Of all the things Halo Infinite could disappoint me with, it's this one. I know some story points that I shouldn't... The pieces I *have* seen have left me very satisfied with the direction of the story, particularly with why the Banished and Cortana have beef with each other (that's all I'm gonna say). So story isn't something I'm going to be even slightly dissatisfied with. But the biome... I live nearby where The Act Man does, and I agree with his recent assessment: if I wanted to get more of the Pacific Northwest, I need only go outside. The lack of setpieces strongly-discourages me and makes me wonder how much the novelty of that "self-storytelling" is going to last. The setpieces have always been spectacular in Halo, whether it's inside a planet-sized anus called High Charity, floating across a lake on Aztec-like hover trams, or in a vast desert with the Milky Way in the distance... Climbing the BADASS Banished Scarabs to disable them, participating in intense aerial dogfights, and the feeling of fighting an actual *war* against the Banished is a great idea, and it's a real shame we don't get to have that feeling.

It was a solid story and it had corrected the path of the narrative moving forward and away from halo 5. I’m unbelievably excited for the future of halo agin. I never found the pilot annoying. In fact I found him quit relatable. And you taking about the plot point that never gets resolved. Chiefs goal is to stop the banished from what THEY are doing on the ring. As in repairing it and potentially using it as leverage or as a weapon. As long as he does that he has completed HIS mission. That whole plot point IS for the future halo games but it never was the main focus and I never felt that it was presented as such in the game. Plus halo is no stranger to cliff hanger or unresolved plot lines being saved for later. This is hands down the best thing 343 has put out gameplay and narrative wise.

      It was a waste of a story. It was a Cortana + Chief story AGAIN for the third (arguably fourth) game in a row, with everything else pushed to the wayside. They're wasting the universe, with barely any effort put into the events and worldbuilding that Halo has expertly handled before. This focus on drama and character-driven stories is what I personally hate, and Halo has never felt compelling ever since the stories have relied on their weak characters as a primary plot point. How would the Banished use the ring to destroy Humanity? No answer. Why are the Endless dangerous and 'worse than the Flood?' No answer. What happened to the Infinity and Cortana? Their fate is off screen and we, the players, learn important details that the Chief ALREADY KNOWS near the end of the story. The drama between the Chief and the Weapon is cheesy and weak. The most compelling plot point was revealed near the end of the game, when it should have been revealed at the start to set the tone and motivation of the villains. Every cutscene is a close-up of a character's face, or a hologram. The open-world activities have no impact on the story, and all the encounters feel like cheaper versions of what we had before which is SUPER disappointing considering the enemy AI and design are some of the best of the series. The excellent music is cheapened by conforming to the weak open-world encounters. Some people (like me) haven't even heard the new Under Cover or Through the Trees in the game (and I've done EVERY SINGLE activity possible). The only praise I can give to the game's story is that I can HOPE that the Cortana plot line is finally over with and we can move on to something more compelling without the weak character-drama driving the narrative. With my luck though, the next game/dlc will be another single-biome open world with only Forerunner structures and the story will be about the Weapon + Chief's relationship. And the pilot'll be there too!
      The Halo campaigns deserve better writing and they need to ditch the 'pseudo open-world' gimmick as we lost more than we gained because of it (and I'm betting the dev team would breathe a collective sigh of relief too). Here's hoping Joe Staten can turn things around, but I am extremely skeptical as NONE of 343i's games has had a compelling story (and that absolutely includes 4 for many of the reasons I dislike Infinite).

    It really shows how different people's tastes can be. I think 343 did a great job with the characters. "The Weapon" actually has a lot of personality, even down to a little hair lip quirk. It's hard to highlight the great character development she goes through without spoiling but yeah, hard disagree.
    With the pilot I can sort of see where you're coming from. But like others have said, you're not really being fair. He's just a human, who was stranded in space for 6 months wondering when he was going to die. He finally encounters what might as well be a God in the form of Master Chief for first contact...how the hell is he going to relate to him? He's not even a soldier. He's a volunteer engineer who stole a pelican to run away because he has exactly 0 combat ability. He just wants to go home, understandably so. Unlike the Chief who is at home fighting an entire army, a couple grunts might be enough to take out the pilot. It might be annoying to hear him complain, but it's understandable and realistic. It would be way worse if he was competing with the chief on who is more badass.
    Also, about how the chief sounds older, well - that's because he is older. Because of you know, that time thing. He is 49 at the start of Infinite. I think Downes is 71. Again, subjective, but Chief sounds great once again.

The obvious duplication of linear level designs shows a real lack of resources after designing a huge semi pointless open world in a halo game that is only good for mint blitz style shenanigans and not much more. Very sad the actual story and focus of level designs is gone here since so many resources were spent building such a large world. Hopefully dlc can fix these problems or a sequel can.

    This review confuses me. You recommend it, but the only part that didnt have some sort of big drawback was the gunplay, everything else was either a solid "okay" or "this has the chance to be good, but only after thess 5 negatives." Any other game launch like this would be hit with solid "meh" reviews, but why is Halo given the greenlight? The entire review I was just thinking "Isnt that a reason why you dont recommend X?"
    Just feels strange, since at no point did I ever feel like you were praising the game outside of the start when talking about how the sandbox feels, so why is this recommended then?

    First: I love your work. Always is top notch. This time I feel like it's a bad game you really love, for the mix of nostalgia and fun. And for sure I can take that. You say something like "Halo has always been a reflection of the state of the gaming industry" and this is too. An industry trying to make profits in a long stance games. A couple days ago I read about someone on 343 saying "servers cost money" and I was like "you are taking money from the moment you sell the game" and then I realize that amount of money maybe just covers development and not the future. And the monetization is needed after all. It's a complex situation. Halo is fun. And that's a lot to say in games nowadays. It's feels nostalgic from you. And I totally can deal with that. You deserve it Sir! I can totally deal with you loving a bad game. You have give us a lot of work through the years. And besides you loving a bad game, I really love It too. Idk. I love how the story went. I really couldn’t guess what would happen next. It was emotional, and it gave some insight into just what Cortana did when she went rogue. Chief had to slowly explain how painful it was to destroy someone who was so close to you. I’d rate the campaign 9/10 IMO. Reach and H2 still reign, but I think HI was very close.

    The more I hear about and play Halo Infinite, the more I want to see a documentary about what it was like working on this game. 343 certainly couldn't carry on with the format of halo 4 and 5, but I think the move to an open-world etc was more of a reaction to those games not going well, rather than a bold deliberate change of direction. That could explain why the moment to moment gameplay feels so solid, but the story and overall world feels a bit undercooked. Personally, I've really struggled to 'get into' halo infinite, I find myself hovering over the tile in my library and then click on something else - this review explains it for me. The gameplay is really really fun, but there's not much in terms of visuals/story/characters that drives me to push through the campaign.

      I think that while the plots of bethesda games tend to be kinda iffy, they're great at creating a worthwhile journey and a sense of adventure with their map design and character progression. Edit: After completing the game on legendary I can say that it was much better than I think skillup gave it credit for especially if you know some of the lore not mentioned directly in game. I'm still hesitant if they can really improve on the storytelling front and keep the writing quality up but I'm very much excited for future campaigns now and that is not something I was predicting after hearing this review.
    Well my fears have basially been confirmed. I will still absolutely be playing it but knowing that the story isn't that great and the homogeneous level design is a bit deflating. I know that some bungie guys were trasnferred to 343 when the company was born but it seems like they (as a collective) just don't understand what makes Halo great all-around. The game play itself feels great but everything else feels undercooked and the writing team has been a big dissapointment since 343 took over.

    I think I posted the exact same thoughts about Halo's overall narrative after Halo 5. But what I pitched in the overrall narrative moving forward was: what if Chief has to kill Cortana, and when he does, he finds out that circumstances leading to Cortana's going haywire was always intended, and that her becoming chaotic is a result of programming implemented by a group of people on Earth long, long ago, to stop the forerunners' Halo technology, which will be revealed to not just be simply a weapon but primarily a tool for creating limitless energy. Basically, Halo's version of the Military Industrial Complex is spinning every story about forerunners as entities we should be extremely suspiscious of, because their technology for building utopias threatens the potentiality of the human race becoming the universe's most supreme species.
    After Cortana is gone she basically leaves a cache of data of who is responsible for doing this to her, leaves it for Chief, and he resolves to find the people responsible for what is basically turning his closest friend into a mentally ill, deranged version of herself. And he can't just accuse these people of a crime, because they have too much power and influence, so he has to assassinate them, which puts him in a precarious position because there are good USNC soldiers who will protect these scumbags, not knowing the truth.
    From there, each game can simply be about Chief trying to hitchike his way back to Earth, being woken up or arriving at some station where a member of this sinister group resides, and Chief decides to plan his own missions and kill his own High Value Targets - _human targets_ - without anyone suspecting him, because _hey, he's the motherfucking Master Chief! Humanity's savior!_ Gamers will have to figure out in each game, who the chief is really after, but also watch as Chief purposefully makes himself useful, to win an audience with the HVT and kill them. And what you get is a tension like Halo has never seen before, because not only will Chief have to contend with the Covenant and [insert other alien antagonists], but the underlying narrative will be having to figure out who Chief is here to kill, and what their role was in the group.
    It's JASON BOURNE meets METAL GEAR SOLID 3 meets KNIVES OUT.

      I’d play this game. Don’t think Halo will ever be this ambitious, the reality is a game like this would cost more and why do more when you can do less and it still pays big money? Make your own fun, sandbox, etc, etc, its just the same recycled emergent experiences, that’s we’ve experienced in tonnes of games before. People have been saying for ages, graphics, presentation, etc, dont matter, its about game play game play game play. It’s right, gameplay is key, but, its just the same combat loops in different orders. No surprise they focus on that the most, that’s the addictive part that this industry is mastering so far. Everything else takes a backseat, yet still scores high for some reason.

    Halo Infinite is the first Halo game that made me realize that no matter how much I wish or hope. I'll never experience another Halo game like the original trilogy.
    It's been over a decade since 3 released, and in that time gaming and gamers have changed a lot. I think even if Bungie made Infinite, it still wouldn't evoke the same feelings I felt when I crash landed in CE or saved the world in 2 and 3. I guess that's the hardest part of growing up and growing older.

The tropical beach of the Silent Cartographer, the covenant ship of Truth and Reconciliation, the haunting foreboding feeling of the Library, the desolate escape from the Maw, crossing the bridges and the cold snow of Assault on the Control Room, even The Two Betrayals which is the same level (just backwards and at night) has a distinct feeling.... It looks like Halo Infinite has captured that feeling of when you crash land on the Halo ring the first time, but I'm disappointed it seems like they have not imagined anything past that, just the same level stretched out for an entire campaign. That's a significant bummer for this 20 year Halo veteran.
