I think that there are a few factors that talk to why it's "dangerous" to talk about content creator income. The top two are jealousy - the "I am as good as them, but I don't get that" thinkers. these are the people that you refer to in your other video on "how to go from 0-1000 viewers" - they can't be bothered to put in the off screen grind and learning. As a result - their "entitlement" pushes them away from the creator. Another, and this is very real, is that Supporters see the income and think "well they don't need MY Patreon, or MY membership, or MY Twitch sub/bits do they" - and they stop supporting. This is clearly a major problem to mid range creators that have done quite well but are not yet independant of the crowd fund model of support.

I hear you. While my RUclips videos are simply passion projects at the time the different paths to revenue are very interesting!
Everyone SHOULD take this as a motivation instead of being upset. Being a streamer or content creator was never a competition to anyone in any way. If you are upset, it only proves that Harris is doing much better than you and you should up your game.
I feel if you start RUclips to make money you will fail. Start for passion and than if it grows

If it's all about the money to them then i think they should just say so and be done with it.

There is something sad about having to hide how much you make or otherwise your people don't like you anymore. We need open discussions like this for people to get comfortable with it. There is nothing wrong with making good money with honest work :)
@@sanssheriff3829 I feel like people *really* underestimate the work that goes into content creation. That's a big part of things. All the editing for RUclips, all the setup and behaviour moderating for Twitch, the careful wording to seem professional for sponsorships. It's still work, but it's headwork instead of physical labor.

If your talking actually boomer parents from the 90s chances are most of us Gen xers would been kick outta of the house back then for even thinking about making a living as a game streamer. Adults from that era strongly viewed gaming as a toy for children. I can even remember when I played Donkey Kong Country 2 came out when I was 17 or 18 and my mother telling me your still playing those stupid video games,that's for children. Then I showed her Mortal Kombat 2 and said omg!!!! How can Nintendo make such a violent game for children!!!😂😂😂😂

Expenses and taxes should be discussed as well. Are all these payouts pre or post tax, what counts as a deduction?
I think if someone is running it as a business they need to know these things, and knowing them before they screwed by the IRS

I feel like for streamers it's more lump expenses not monthly. Maybe a few subscriptions here and there.
I'd be really interested in a discussion about what ways you invest your earnings.
I think tax stuff would be helpful, but I don’t think it’s really a smart idea nor anyone’s business to expect an itemized list of all his expenses on a month to month basis. That changes frequently and like anyone else, they have bills, he puts back into his work and then they save and spend money on stuff they want. I don’t think there’s anything wrong w/ not sharing every single detail of their money use.

Spotify doesn't pay .5 cents per play. It's $.70/1000 plays. so it'd be $105. And they're bad at even paying that. Also that's split between rights holders. He didn't write it, let's say he's publishing, so he gets half unless he bought out the rights or claims it's for-hire, which don't get me started. So yeah, the math is a bit off. I thought about this years ago but I figured how much money it was worth, and it's not much. @@krovman You can't. Source: I'm a musician. I used to make good money off New Age music CDs on alt distro. I just release stuff for free on SC or on bandcamp now. You can't make money on music now unless you tour and I'm old and tired, so that's out.
The only thing that bothers me about learning about gamers/streamers income is, my mother told me gaming will never make you money, so I didnt spend my teen years learning how to make it profitable. Now I’m having to learn everything as an adult and it’s way harder.

Some parents are toxic, but to be fair, most people, especially older folks, aren't aware of game streaming as a viable income source, even today (maybe if they did the business would be even more difficult). There's still the question of, even though there are a lot of people being very successful at it, whether those are the most visible ones are that are at the far end of the Pareto distribution, implying means there are a lot more people struggling that very few people know about. Hence, you may be going in to a saturated market, and the ones that succeed in the massive ways that are covered in this video have to bring in a lot more to the table than just playing games (personality, quality, creativity, work ethic, etc., on top of understanding how things like social media and algorithms work). Also, in order to be successful, you have to accept it as part of your identity and be willing to present that to other people and the world. So if you have insecurities about people giving you disapproval or skepticism for recording yourself play games as a career, rather than being a doctor or lawyer or engineer, it may be a tough psychological transition (or alternatively a social transition, in terms of who you choose to hang out with and receive criticism from).

Thank you for being honest. It is not the dollars, but more about how much effort you put into making the content. I now feel you care about us. One thing you did not cover was your expenses. Many things we do not often consider is how much it takes to make money. Such as I know you purchase a lot of items to review, business taxes, rent, the crew that works behind the scenes needs to be paid, healthcare, studio time, production costs, and business internet service is expensive. Thank you for putting yourself on the line. I hope the word strives to be like you and not be upset by you being successful.

I think people get jealous and they realize that their attention is paying your "salary". It's a spiteful act really, but they don't recognize the value/info you (and youtubers like you) are bringing to their lives.

Same here, I always felt like its impossible to be a fulltime content creator and have a stable income at the same time, I think this shows a lot of us anxious people that it is possible if you're smart
Alpha, Linus tech tips is a very good tier three example. He has an entire company, and has many people working for him
I think Linus isn't a Tier 3. If you use this methodology, Tier 1 is single stream (pun) income, Tier 2 is diverse income streams, Tier 3 is a brand that can stand on its own two feet. 100 Thieves is a brand of its own and Streambeats makes income that's not totally reliant on income from Tier 1 and Tier 2's stuff.
LTT is Tier 1 on steroids. Linus' entire staff is built around the RUclips channel. That is a huge part of his income. Anything he makes in any other platform is just pocket change compared to RUclips. If he lost RUclips, he'd have to fire his staff very quickly. Linus is transitioning to Tier 2 with the LTX Expo and Twitch content but I don't know how profitable those are (considering his high overhead). The same goes for MKBHD, god-level Tier 1. Although Marques is transitioning to Tier 2 with his podcast and short-lived IGTV channel.
Tier 3 doesn't mean "start your own company". It's "outgrowing content creation" and making a real business not reliant on your video and social media platforms.
TheCollateraldamage1 alpha talks about how a tier 1 is when they solely rely on the stream revenue itself and nothing else. Linus is a tier 3

Im higly impressed about how brave you are posting this numbers, HOWEVER, i think that some ppl (as you said) will get mad about this, a good idea would be to discount from those numbers how much expenses you have a month, like editor, rent, taxes etc, bc yes you make 44-80 grand but you can loose more than half just paying people to work for you and paying your country taxes and paying rent or whatever. This doesn't make any sense. He's reporting his income from his job. Obviously he has expenses, like rent and taxes, but so does literally every other person in the world. It's not like you go to apply for a job, and they're like, "We pay 50k a year, but after tax and rent, and your electricity and internet bills, that's 20k a year" or whatever.
It's not important for this discussion, but it would be interesting if he made a seperate video on what he pays others to help him do his job though. He already shed some light on the cost of an editor for him and why he has one, but there are other costs for his business too. Each cost like this is for a reason, I think it would be very informative to see a video on his reasons behind them vs doing it yourself vs not doing it at all, as well as the total cost of keeping his business going.

I’d love to hear why someone unsubscribed because you broke down how revenue is gained on streaming platforms using your own experience. In my opinion your openness to discuss, publicly, something considered so private is refreshing and builds your credibility with your audience. It’s so nice to meet someone who isn’t rubbing it in our faces or hiding it like it’s some special club secret. You treat streaming as a job and therefore are earning money from people and companies who are willing to give it to you. Definitely nothing to be ashamed of and those who are offended or see an issue with it I genuinely don’t understand their point of view.

I think you should continue this and add your typical content creation related expenses in a month. Youve made an equipment video but what about how much a video costs to make, such as when you tested all the streaming PC. you have a full time editor and designer. how much it cost to hire a producer for 180 tracks. obviously some of this info could be private and you dont want to share for someone else's sake, but just an idea to expand upon and show what else you put into this. Amazing shit and you also gained a massive load of respect from me with this. Loved your content since I found it and you consistently prove how amazing you are.
I’m a teacher that wanted to use multiple channels in content delivery to my students, and of course found OBS so I began searching tutorials. I looked at about a dozen when I came across yours and was blown away. Most of the tutorials made assumption of understanding, were convoluted, or was just doing the “look at me and see how smart I am” type videos. Your OBS video for beginners was methodical, insightful, clear, easy and fun to understand. You have a real talent. Just for grins, I clicked on this video, and was equally amazed at your honesty and willingness to put yourself out there while pulling back the “wizards-curtain” in how monetization works. As part of my High School media classes, I intend to use your videos and philosophy as part of my curriculum. As far as your worries you expressed in your video, I wouldn’t. When my students see how much revenue a person can make and (through your videos) how accessible the tools are , I know you will spur great interest and questions in how we all can do this. I think the most important point you make is in your tier system, and how each is scaffolded and integrated. Wonderful job you are doing. I’ll be seeing you on twitch.

This honesty is very much appreciated, Harris 🖤. If larger streamers are not transparent, those of us with smaller streams/channels have no knowledge of market value or brand deal expectations. I've done this for a living in corporate America but being the streamer is new territory for me.

Streaming and content creating is honest work. It's like being a comedian or something like that pumping out a live show almost every day! Being there for people, answering there comments, entertaining them ... etc. That's actually hard work.
Damn i started my channel back in November. And i'm finally seeing some results, especially in the last week. But man, it's a ton of work, each video takes like a week to make, I need to get faster. I refuse to just record my face and talk, i hate shitty videos. I like high quality, and it took a while (Few Months) to learn to Film, Edit, Etc. Takes time, but thanks for the hope man!! I'm glad your doing well. You deserve it man. Keep up the great work dude!

ive been on Twitch for 2 months and average 6-10 viewers. If your not averaging that already on YT through livestreams id give Twitcha try, because RUclips isnt a hell of alot easier to get views on when it comes to Live content

One of the points Harris makes quite often is that you can grow both of them. He mentioned his trifecta of growth. When on RUclips, talk about your Twitch channel. When you're on Twitch, talk about your RUclips. Same thing with Twitter.

It does blow my mind how much content creators can make, that being said I've gathered more respect for how much work and effort it requires. I do usually try to throw my free Amazon Prime monthly sub towards smaller streamers for exactly this reason I have to say, this if the first time I've ever watched a piece of your content and you sir earned my free prime sub for your honest disclosure putting your income steam at risk. Great advice, and you'll likely get some more free subs from me in future months for this one video alone 👍

That's exactly how I discovered you. I'm just barely starting to get into streaming/youtube and started to research how to get bigger. Looked up youtube videos and your advice made more sense compared to others so I started to follow you and learned about your Twitter. Now I regularly watch and look for your videos for any advice regarding building up my youtube or streaming ideas.

I’ve always shunned when others create that ego where wealth overcomes someones ability to show respect and be appreciative for what they have and try to throw it in others’ faces. YOU are not that way and I absolutely love it, I’m a beginning streamer and have enjoyed the process thoroughly. I have so much to learn and all of your videos I have watched so far have given me more confidence and drive to push forward with my stream, so thank you so much for this video and sharing your personal life with us. Alpha Gaming I think it only bothers people who don’t realise how much “behind the scenes” work goes into building a successful channel. I like to know that there’s a ton of ways to make money, and diversify my income if needed.
I just gotta say, this is awesome. So many content creators talk about these things but leave out most of the transparency. Honestly if I didn’t know any better I’d swear you’d ran a big self started business before this! Great insight and gave me so much to work on and I’m excited for the future!

And your honesty - your gut-check level realism - is WHY you are successful. Thanks for that - and thanks for sharing. At the beginning of the video you mentioned that there was a risk for you, and I think your viewers (I know I do) appreciate that. But it's paid off! Opinion: When it comes to "giving/ gifting/ tipping" hard earned money to a content creator that they can logistically see is doing well (ie, showing their earnings) can result in people take a step back and addressing their own needs first, maybe in a sense of; "this person is doing ok, maybe I can save myself that £5- £25 (if they donate/tip) this month for something else, besides they don't really provide me with anything other than entertainment".
You Harris "provide" this statistical information based around the premises that "yes I do receive this amount of money but here *gives small plate of hope* this how you can do it too".
That is the difference between someone accidentally/ showboating their hard earned wealth (which by the way, is absolutely fine, you earned it, you do that how you want) to here "this is my income, this visually demonstrates that what I say this proof and if you listen to my advice you could get here too".
Therefore, you should NOT worry about viewers/ friends taking this video the incorrect way. You will NOT lose growth or income because you DO provide that insight and educational value that so many content creators are scared to give.
Just an opinion though.

thanks for being transparent! It's crazy that people would potentially quit supporting you for sharing. I think it comes from a place of jealousy. But as a fellow creator in the booktube community, and as of this coming up weekend I will opening my first twitch account!!! I know full well how much time it takes to build a channel and dream up content, always be on point for engagement...to have a quality content. Creators deserve what they make and its reflective of the effort. If you loose some people, you'll gain others who appreciate your honesty.
