In today's video we're going retro, and looking at one of the most iconic gaming characters from our younger years. He's getting a remaster, so he's getting a 101 - This is 101 Facts About Spyro (The Dragon).

It was fun watching this. My name is Craig Stitt and I was one of the artists/art director for the original three Spyro games. I’d like to offer a few comments and/or corrections on this list of 101 facts.
#4 and #6. The order of events here was in fact a little different. After Disruptor, we pitched a dragon game to Universal. The original concept had you starting out as a hatchling and growing into a colossal dragon. It was then that Mark Cerny suggested that it would be better to target the game at a younger crowd and to keep the dragon young (pointing out sequels would be much easier if we kept the dragon young)
#5 That’s me, and dragons are still as cool they come!
#9 We were very aware that “Pete” was the name of the the little boy in “Pete’s Dragon” (it’s kind of in the title of the movie). It was the inversion of the names that we thought was fun.
#10 It is true that “Pete” was meant to be just a working title, but after so many months of calling him Pete some of us did become very attached to the name.
#12 I remember Brian Hastings being a little peeved that someone at Sony got credit for coming up with Spyro when, in it truth, he had pitched that name several months earlier.
#14 As pointed out, Spyro did start out green. Not only was he getting lost running around on all that grass, but there were sa few other games that had green characters (Gex, Croc and I think at least one more) We wanted to separate ourselves from them. I still have the original VHS tape that I put together to help chose what color to make Spyro. (I’m working on getting it converted to digital so I can get it out for everyone to see.)
#30 The real story of how we ended up with “Gnorcs’ is a kind of funny. We were talking about the game and there was some discussion about what to call the enemies. Some liked Gnomes while others like Orcs. While in the middle of conversation someone’s tongue got twisted and he said ‘Gnorc’, and we suddenly knew we had our name.
#41 The name “Bryan” carved into the castle wall in Summer Forest was for my son, Bryan. It was after seeing this that Oliver Wade approached me and said he also had a son named Bryan, and a daughter named Brenda. He then asked if I could also hide her name somewhere in the game.
#49 I’d forgotten all about the squid!!
#54 I’d also forgotten all about getting the Shemp!
One fun fact that I didn’t see here is Dan Johnston, one of the animators at Insomniac. Somehow he ended up as a sort of company mascot. At some point someone scanned in his driver’s license and his face started showing up hidden all around the game. The two I can remember off hand are a gold coin and a wanted poster. His face is also hidden here and there in the Ratchet & Clank games.
I don’t think any of us would have dared dream that 20 years later Spyro would still be as big as ever and have more than a dozen games!

@gospyro Since I'll likely never bump into someone who worked so closely on the games ever again, I want to thank you for lending a hand in creating one of my childhood fictional friends that I hold so dear to my heart. Without Spyro's existence, I wouldn't have the fond memory of when I asked my dad if he recognized the main theme for the first game - to which he did immediately - shortly before he passed away. Spyro will have a special place in my heart and a reminder of when my dad used to look up shortcuts when I got stuck. I only wish my dad was still alive today to hear that Spyro is returning with even more of a kick. Thanks to this spunky purple dragon, whenever I see a dragon, he's the first to come to mind. And he is probably the only reason why I place sentimental value on dragons at all. So thank you so so much.

I'm honestly surprised you didn't include the fact that the original names for Spyro 2 levels were different and a lot of the names were twinned, Collosus & Idol Springs being Collosus Steppes and Collosus Springs instead

For people who don't know, the suits up top demanded Enter the Dragonfly be released for (I think) the 2002 Christmas holiday window so it ended up being released an incomplete buggy mess.
Rokabur should’ve released in 2003 instead
Hunter is not voiced by his original VA in the reignited Trilogy, he's voiced by Robbie Daymond (of FFXV fame as Prompto among other things)
If they however changed it and Greg is voicing Hunter again, then I will stand corrected.
As a huge fan of dragons since I was little, I was absolutely stoked that there was a video game where you could play one! On my Playstation!! I used to be subscribed to Playstation Magazine way back in the day and I loved that the demo/info discs that came with did interviews with people who created the game and Copeland himself discussing how he was inspired and created the music. -sigh- the old days...thanks for telling me about the reboot of the first three with updated graphics, I'll have to check them out once I can find out where to get them. I'm also glad you could choose to select the original music...it had such a great magical quality to them. I was always bummed that Carlos Alazraqui didn't stay as Spyro. I thought it suited him well.

I don’t like the fact Spyro looked like he’d been beat with a stick, but the game brought Spyro back into the lime light and that was a very good thing!
That's harsh. Maybe there are fans who genuinely enjoy the series for what they are, with or without Spyro. Don't let nostalgia blind you to that simple fact. I may be miffed that Mario has a better record than Sonic and would never touch his games but I can't tell people that he should never be played. That's going too far.

Everyone's favorite purple dragon is Figment! NOT SPYRO!
I find skylanders to be part of the spyro series but, not a proper spyro game. Because skylanders is focus on everybody not the dragon himself. Also I see skylanders as spyro characters. Just like how Donkey Kong and his family and friends known as mario characters even though that Donkey Kong has his own games.
Donkey Kong is absolutely NOT a Mario character and is not known as such. He was absolutely a character first and in fact Mario debuted in *HIS* game, not any Super Mario game.

Another fact: Bianca was voiced in the original Spyro 3 by Pamela Hayden, who voiced Milhouse, Jimbo and Rod Flanders in “The Simpsons”. And in the Reignited Trilogy, Bianca was voiced by Melissa Hutchison, who played Clementine in Telltale’s “The Walking Dead” series. So the magical rabbit had two famous voices.
My favourite was spyro 3. Had my favourite portals and minigames. Except the Bentley boxing match. Fuck that shit.

My favourite spyro game is still spyro 3, maeby because it is the only original spyro game I own, and had before I was born, but I like the dawn of the dragon almost as much so it is hard to choose
That wasn't the Konami code. It may have been inspired by it, or a nod to it, but not the actual code. All old school gamers know it by heart.
Spyro was ruined after Sony sold the rights to it and Crash Bandicoot I Hope Ratchet and Clank stay with Sony.

I honestly despised Billy west as sparks. It took awhile for me to get used to david spade but he was actually really funny so once I got used to Sparks having a voice I could only picture him. Also as much as I love Wayne Brady I really don't think he was a good fit for sparx at all.
