As a small child and target demo of the animated Super Mario tv show I absolutely adored it. Just goes to show that critic sites and publications are to be completely ignored.
Critics are used incorrectly. Look at the reviews for the movie, it was aimed at kids and those of us who grew up with it, so a sixty year old reviewer was never going to like it. Find critics who share your tastes and follow them, that’s the way to use critic info. And rotten tomatoes is meant to be a joke, people seem to have forgotten that
17:35 (#53) Mario's official color scheme was originally blue shirt, red overalls. He was portrayed this way in all the official artwork despite it not matching his in-game sprites in most games. It didn't officially change to the more modern red shirt, blue overalls version until SMB 3, thus the cartoon version was, in fact, correct for the time period when it came out.

You didn't mention Princess Peach's name used to be Princess Toadstool or that Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan became the Lost Levels here in the US. Our version of Super Mario 2 was a Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic and it was just converted to the Mario world here.

Shigeru Miyamoto originally wanted to make Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Bluto game, but he never allowed to use them due to copyright issues.
So Shigeru Miyamoto creates Jumpman, DK, and Pauline as an alternative characters and that's how Mario came to be.
Eventually, Mario's popularity overshadows an outgrew Popeye's to the Point Mario is considered the Mickey Mouse of Gaming and video games.
