What wild animals would snack on 10 rats over the course of a single night?
@robertmon3 I found some slurs in your RUclips videos also. Send $20 for list!
I live in Alberta. We're rat free!
Shawn, did you ever catch the Neil deGrasse Tyson - Rat?

That clip of the mouse using the stick was absolutely amazing!
I watched a crow trip a rat trap with a twig to get the bait !🤔🇨🇦
The rat that used that stick to set off the trap so he could then eat the bait was one more smart rat. I hate rats but I gotta give this guy credit...he is smart! Amazing. I'm not sure I would have believed this if it were not on video.
He also caught on video a rat stealing mice from a live catch trap for food, explaining why the two issues go hand in hand- rats eat mice.
It was pretty unprecedented, wasn't believed to be done in the wild. You don't usually see it, as normally they seem to coexist.

Very clever. By the way, I always set the traps while wearing gloves --eliminate human scent. After disposing the dead mouse, I use a butane to sear the mouse scent off the trap.
Was just about to ask that... I use gloves but was always throwing away spent traps... Be nice to reuse them... So just scorch the wood n it "sterilizes" it huh??
Great idea!! 👍
Shawn's friends/family: "How many traps are you gonna-"
Shawn:"Yes!!"
Hahaha
When Shawn gets tired of making videos about testing rodent traps he's either going to have to open a museum with all his traps or invite Antique Roadshow over for a visit.
and a few extra from his pocket
Hi Shawn - I made a single box for my Victor Rat Trap and baited it with peanut butter. I set the trap on sensitive. The rat was still able to trip the trap over a couple of nights without getting caught. I watched your video with the bait cover so I decided to make a bait cover out of a piece of fine wire mesh. I wired it to the plastic bait paddle and added a bit more peanut butter and set the trap to Firm so the trap wouldn't trip as easily and scare the rat. It worked! I also bought a couple of Victor Rat Traps (original) with the narrow metal bait paddle and made another wire mesh bait cover and wired it to the paddle. It worked, too! Thanks ever so much for your videos. I've learned to think like a rat - lol
Rats use tools?????? Rats are going to evolve to beat humans.. that’s alarming
@DocRox biting voters?
@DocRox politicizing Everything is dumber than a box of dead rats.
@DocRox 😂😂😂😂💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
@DocRox If you use Trump voters in that joke it doesn't work as it would imply that there is any smarts whatsoever.
thats why i love rats ! king of the pest animals !!
I came up with the same rig before I saw your video. The rats are so huge here (by a food processing plant) that even the Victor doesn't always kill them immediately. But the nails hold them until they die. I also tether the trap with a clamp to a rafter, incase a coon of possum gets involved.
I paint the whole rig with used cooking oil. If the rat bleeds, it is easier to remove the blood scent. The oil odor draws rats, and the oil smell covers any human smell that makes rats wary. Thanks for another nice video.
Hahaha when you cut to the gigantic 10 trap trap it completely caught me by surprise and made me cackle madly.
You got a rat problem? Not anymore! 😎

A piece of cloth or inner tube under the trap might damp enough to avoid a sympathetic snap setting off another. I also use masking tape to cover the surface of snap traps .Makes for easy cleaning and reusing traps. Before I started doing that I found mice reluctant to enter a trap another mouse died in.
I dont have rats or mice and my husband actually work in pest control, but I enjoy your vids so much. You're like the sweetest person on the planet.
Shawn, I don’t have a rat or mouse problem, yet I am addicted to your channel. Why do I enjoy this? Are you a hypnotist?
Is there any chance you would show us how to make one of these 4 compartment boxes. My woodwork skills are zero. Brilliant video. Thanks.
Mechanical side note: You may want to add cotton batting/damp cardboard to the sides and bottoms of each area where the traps are. This may reduce the sound and vibrations, so the other traps wouldn't go off with just one. Hope it helps! Great vid as always!
His ten trap system didn't have any issues two nights running, a full house each time. I'm not sure any extra work is required. Maybe the set of four is more sensitive as the whole thing is lighter. In which case it might be better and a lot easier to make a heavier base.
Some impact absorbing memory foam
Sounds much harder to keep clean.
@@johnb9051 - Agreed, but save clean up in the long run...
Shut up. His trap is fine
Thats amazing how the rat set off the trap with a stick. In school in the 90s when I grew up, they always taught only humans use tools. Meanwhile several animals use them.
Never thought I would be watching rat trapping videos (well, maybe...but def not my top 10 things to do), but here I am. Rats have discovered my chicken coop and have a tunnel under it. I built this design to hold 2 traps and baited it for 2 days and then set it and got 2! I will re-bait and then re-set and hopefully they'll keep coming. Thanks SO much for the technical advice and education around rat behavior. I hope I'll be able to get rid of the rats!
Dude.....i lost my mind when that rat used a stick to set the trap
Shawn, you’re very creative & resourceful. I’ve learned so much watching your videos!
These traditional traps are the best
WHO ARE YOU!?
"I'm Ratman..."
ratman?? dinner dinner dinner dinner, ratman
I set my Traps outdoors using a standard Cinder block , I set them up in the holes stays dry if it rains and no rot. and also I use the Victor Traps that are plastic plastic ,washable in a bucket with chlorine and reusable. For bait I use Peanut butter .
I had one comment/suggestion for setting traps if you are new to using these Victor snap traps (and not placing them in a box). At 1:30 in the video when you are setting the trap, set it from the other side (flip it 180 as shown at 1:30). That way if the kill bar trips as you are setting the bar in the trigger, your fingers won’t get hit.
I have found about 10-20% of my rats are too smart to approach a regular trap of any kind, I found that by covering a Rat trap with blown in attic insulation to camouflage the trap, I get them all. I only leave the peanut butter on the trigger showing. That hides the mechanical trap and they walk right onto the covered trap and it gets them. I discovered this with a surveillance video camera I used to watch. I had seen that the smart ones could distinguish any trap type. When I hid it with insulation, it fooled them every time.
i thought of another trick altogether for these geniuses: Set heavily baited traps inside a small dog "kennel" cage and close the gate ~also that way pets are not able to get it on the nose. I have some subfloor/baseboard chewers, probably roof rats that get in the attic and climbed down between studs to gnaw their ways inside *another thing is one must install wire mesh over all openings around the outside of the house. . . then the new rats can't get in. Great video again, Mr. Woods.
You're going to get close enough to close the door? Yeah, f that. Lol
This is awesome, I work in Pest Control and will be making these for my customers. Thank you for the great idea.
At our previous house, I got 5 rats with those battery-powered rat zappers. The rats we have now are smarter, couldn't get a single one. Talked to a professional rat guy on the phone and he gave me some good free advice. The old-fashioned Victor snap traps and Slim-Jim as bait. I cut the Slim-Jim into small pieces and microwave them for 15 seconds, just enough to get the grease flowing. Set the traps and got a good size mama rat. A couple of days later, we started picking baby rats off the garage floor. Without mama to feed them, they started venturing out on their own. I just set more traps today and put them in different locations. I gotta build one of those multi-trap boxes. 👍
That rat with the stick is keeping me awake at night.
Me, "damn, 4 traps. Nice." Brings out the ten trap set up, 😱
Are you freaking kidding me? The rat with the stick! 🤣🤣🤣
That rat using a stick, is a legend. A true legend. That rat needs its on channel.
I've never seen anything so clever in my life. That is so cool. How in the world did you build all those holders, plus put mouse traps inside? One smart individual, you are! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Made mine today. It is a 5 compartment. I will begin pre-baiting it tonight and will let everyone know how it's working!
@@JoeHan268 Yes it is working!
That 10-pack trap system is brilliant! I like you videos a lot, Shawn. Great job with them. I look forward to seeing them every Monday and Friday. Cheers!🙂👍
You should patent that idea
It's brilliant
Does he have a video for the 10 rats two nights in a row??? I wanna see that viseo!
0:36 That was crazy the fact that the rat used the stick to set the trap off that was a genius idea
Dude, when I saw the ten trap box....i fricken lost my mind. That was the funniest thing I've ever seen you show
You’re the only one on RUclips that’s not bullshit. Thank you, Shawn.
I would love to see this being used in the barn, then seeing wildlife enjoying a nice meal
After years of suffering with squirrels in my attic, I found this video. I paid a professional $900 to help last year , but he was was of limited success. I watched your video, ordered the traps through your link and built a 4 trap pad. I have trapped 5 squirrels in 3 days. Wow. Thank you for giving me an edge to what seemed like an unsolvable problem
Maybe seal up your attic.
This reminds me of those choker mouse traps that catch multiple rodents all in a row.
When I worked at an office with a small staff,we simply bought a large amount of glue traps, tape it to the ground so they wont move around, made it around 1.5 feet around, and placed an obscene amount of food for them in the middle. Catches 8-10 rats. BUT they do SMARTEN UP as Shawn showed in the video. You have to CHANGE the food to make the trap keep working.
He's the Edison of rat trapping By Golly!
Just made a three trap version of this, and have it set for the rat/s that moved into our mud room. Hoping in a few days when I make it live it'll get 'em. Big suckers too, been eating well clearly. Thanks for the design!
I been catching vermin 60 years never called it the "kill bar", top name. Great Video!
I have always been more concerned with not smashing my fingers in a diseased and blood infested trap than naming the various parts. Ha Ha Then I started washing then after a kill, even then I was still cautious.
Rats hate him, farmers love him: Shawn Woods
Make sure that super smart one doesn't survive and breed ._.
Great to see most of my mods are represented here in some way or another. After a few times of trap going off and no rat, another of a dead rat 30" away i added a sharpened corner bracket where he has the nails. 2 rats and 1 squirrel later, haven't had it go off without a catch
bloody hell that rat is too smart and scary, it must be ended 😂
We did a mini version of this and they’re still taking the bait and running away, how just how, these guys are so smart
Add a little X-out glue on the trigger(from glue traps) and it really worked perfectly on my system.
The safety rod is absolute genius! I avoid those traps like the plague as I'm scared of losing my fingers...
I've laughed my lungs off for the rat with the stick
I use the Victor snap traps (with the big yellow trigger plate, not the skinny little metal plate). Pretty effective even without the enclosure, though I see the value in it. I, too, use peanut butter, often with a sunflower seed or dog food kibble pressed into it.
Hmm thank you I’ll put this in my garage
Buy it
Oh yeah yeah!
Yeeee
This an outstanding "How To" video. We have either a rat or a squirrel in our garage, so we'll see what happens tonight with 2 set traps. Thank you.
It's like a voting station, if the rat picks the cheese as the president, they die.
Thanks for bringing politics to a rat trap video Tristin
Cheese=biden.
Kevin B yes
Now, if you only had a trap like that with 535 stalls for our politicians.
It wouldn’t work unless our rights were used as bait 😅
A "how to build" video would be immensely helpful. "a lid with a hinge," like I don't even know how to start with that lol, my school didn't have shop class :(
Do you keep all the traps you do videos on? If so, I’m sure we’d all love to see a couple photos of just the whole collection in one spot

Here's to you dude. That epic scene just played back in my head. LOL
The moot point - how to clear the horror in the morning.
Add putty under the traps to reduce the vibrations - Thanks Shawn!

Hi Shawn, i make a hinged box trap that I sell at my business, Chilliwack a Rat. The box trap is a very successful trapping method. Thank you for your service
Hi Shawn, I work in wildlife control and a coworker Adam pointed me in your direction. We are hesitant to set snaps outside due to potential nontarget animals getting injured (see skunks/raccoons). Is your barn accessible to raccoons & skunks? What's your experience been? We consider weasel boxes or setting in EVO exterior stations sometimes but what's your take? Your vids are top notch and thanks for doing what you do!
A friend who worked in pest control suggested feeding a cotton ball into the little hook on the trip plate. They want the fiber for nesting so they yank on it to get it free. Gets those careful rats! Doesn't hrt to have peanut butter and the sunflower seeds as well.
We use to secure rat trap with thick wire. So if it did miss the rat we didn't lose trap

Thanks, I caught a lot but there is one smart one that I swear is mocking me. I especially like the added nails on the trap.😀
Wow. You’ve put a lot into this! Excellent advice. Btw, I had really good luck using raisins as bait.
Great vid! My place was invaded by two rats -- a grey and a dark brown. Using a similar trap I nailed the gray one but the brown one just threw his nose up at the trap and wouldn't get near it. I guess the bugger didn't like my cheese.
This is one of your more interesting videos.
Hope to see more "real life example" style examples of your adventures!
Thanks for the great content.

Damn those modded Spikes just made it into a Mortal Kombat Fatality 🤣
Since there are plenty of slots in the 10-trap build, I wonder if one could shuffle the inactive traps among the cubbies randomly in order to really mess with the rats' ability to learn. Would that kind of randomization help with the really smart ones?
Gave the rats a false sense of security and when they least expect it that's when the big powerful snap occurs.
It's brilliant. Holy crap.
Hey Shawn, you have been featured on Daily Dose of Internet again.
Master Splinter was quite impressive…. Should have donated him to science
These boxes work great. The nails modification is good. I just pulled a rat out that was barely caught by part of his head. But one of the nails went into his brain so he wasn't going anywhere!
I'm building a four seater today! I also saw a video of a rat slip his paw underneath and flip the trap releasing the spring and getting a free dinner. They're smarter than you average bear Yogi!
This safety bar is a brilliant idea! My fingers thank you.
That intro was hilarious!
I get the feeling this guy really enjoyed watching Dexter.
I thought some variation of the "dunking" traps were the best and your favorite. Not sure if it was a platform or roller-bar type that you liked best.
I have a set up almost similar but it uses the T-REX rat traps and I average about 7 per night at a local store back door.
I've been subscribed for years and I'm waiting for the day when you'll trap rats with a pump action shotgun.
Leaves a hella mess. But satisfying.
When I was a kid we used to put the tractor exhaust down a rat hole and shoot them as they come out for fresh air. So much fun.
I recently watched a video of a guy that uses a really sophisticated air rifle to kill rats around a dairy farm. He's hired to do so. I couldn't believe the shear number of rats that were running around. This issue I saw was he'd shoot one and rest would scatter. It was a waiting game. The farmer would be better off using this technique. Have someone build 10 of the 10 trap models and have one of the farm hands set them each night. Killing 50 or 60 a night with a rifle isn't going to bring down their numbers and I'm guessing is pretty expensive. From what I saw it should be part of a farms daily routine for pest management. You'll never get rid of them entirely but at least you could control their numbers.
There's a video of him using a trap which incorporates a revolver that is triggered by the rat.
It's a few years old.
Check out some ratting with dogs videos. It's total chaos, and the dogs get crazy amounts of rats.
What an awesome channel. This is what RUclips is all about
Hey Shawn, great video! Any advice for putting something like this in a chicken pen? Any issues making this into a tunnel type trap to allow the rats in, but keeping the chickens out?
Lol come one man, I believe you know that answer but just incse I’d say make the halls to each trap a foot longer, lid would still work but me personally, I’d buy a cheap 20 to 50 gallon tote, cut a rat size hole In each side then, to make like a foyer or each hole, take a 4”x4” wAll and place it about 2.5 inches towards the inside. Chicks small enough to get inside the hole will not break line of sight with mother. Foyer win! Then fill the tote with traps
Froot Loop, floss, tie to trigger...or Apple Jacks.
I have wondered about drilling a hole, below the trigger, to have a hidden place to put the bait...maybe big enough for one of those disposable ketchup cups.
I caught 2 schrews this way.
I have it snug on the trigger.
There are very few animals that have been seen to use tools. The fact that this rat used the same tool night after night is quite incredible. I wouldn't have believed it until I saw it.
That barn is something out of my nightmares.
You're doing God's work.
