the title should say through not thorough.
To avoid having to "reset the rat" between tests, you could have made a maze were the rat starts from the largest hole box and has to go through incrementally smaller holes. Another thing you could have done instead of manually moving the rat between partitions is making a little canopy box to allow the rat to move between neighboring sections.
Good ideas and suggestions there
i trapped a rat in a bathroom last year. it was hell to catch it. it charged me multiple times. they are FEARLESS. i used a cardboard box to block its flying charge attack. 2-3 foot jump is insane! i tried putting down all kinds of snap traps but i watched it do triple salchows on them, setting them off without getting snapped as it ran the gauntlet. i had twenty rat-sized snap traps from diff manufacturers! i squirted it with some water (it didnt like being wet) and finally got it with a hockey stick. it avoided my big net. it didnt go in my live catch trap NOT ONCE. i didnt know fighting a rat would be this tough.
Who won the fight?
he says in the end he got it with a hockey stick@@carlospacheco7361
@@carlospacheco7361The rat won and is is posting from his account lol
Omg I would be gray headed. They terrify me. Also had one trapped under my kitchen sink cabinets. I had sealed it's entry way, thinking it had already left prior. It had apparently hid and was there the whole time I had worked on the holes. Then it was trapped, so I opened the door just enough to throw a block of poison in with it. Figuring it had to eat something.. sometime. Barricaded the doors for 2 -3days until no more noise. Found it dead thank God. I could not have handled a fiasco like you had to endure.
That's better than a movie SuperVinlin
Ok, so we know the diameter of a round hole - but what about a "slot" like you did with the mice? I think slots/gaps are more common than round holes in buildings.
"Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage"
That rat was not happy with you lol
If you modify one of your side pieces you could slide the acrylic over instead of moving the rat each time.
That third rat just got progressively more chill as it learned how things went.
It got progressively more dehydrated... It was probably very weak by the end.
The best way to manage a rat infestation is make sure they can't get in in the first place. Once you've got them, they are damn hard to get rid of. I had an infestation in my garage a couple years ago, and the holes they entered through were pretty small - like 1-1/4".
The rats you used in your tests were Norway rats, which are thicker and need larger holes. I was infested with black roof rats, which are thinner and can get through small holes. I which I could send you a couple live black roof rats for you to test with.
BTW, the rats in my garage chewed through cans, so I'm very surprised that one couldn't chew through the plexiglass.
Awesome video, Shawn!
I´m not sure if you did it because of me ... but nice that you put in a millimeter measurement (metric system) this time. Thanks for that!
So they squeeze trough a hole between roughly 3,5 cm and 3,8 cm. Good to know!
If I would have Rats over here (which I have not, thnak God!) I would compare this to our German Rats.
But maybe someone else does it?
I have lived in this house for 52 years. I have never had rats here, although there has always been a compost heap with kitchen waste. Rats have been coming into my garden occasionally for a year now. I've watched them with wildlife cameras. Because there are cats, hedgehogs and other animals here, I only set live traps and snap traps in boxes. The rats don't come often and I caught 4 rats (2x 2 rats) last year.
Interesting, it looks like they don't like to chew on the plastic. I really thought they'd gnaw through that easily. It would be cool to retest this with the plastic roof but with wood front holes. I bet they can gnaw through the wood down to 1", maybe smaller.
They love the flavor of plastic used as electrical insulation and the synthetic rubber used to route vacuum around an engine.
Show them the owl decoy… they will fit through the smaller ones…
Growing up, us kids would have to pass through the utility room to get outside to the porch. I kept hearing a scratching noise under my dresser at night. My dad would just scoff. Until mom discovered a huge rat was living under the dryer! Dad and my uncle went in there with waders and baseball bats. All hell broke loose, them screaming, the rat squealing, bats slamming everywhere. Every time I walked through there after that my toes would curl.
Hips dont lie...
😂 I knew someone would say this
The rat was known as "Elvis the pelvis"...
When you showed the baby rat asleep in your had, I couldn't help but let out an "aww"!
A tunnel with increasingly smaller holes might be an idea.
I expected they can chew through that plexiglass easier...
Thank you Shawn for working so hard to educate us. It’s really appreciated.
They played you, there way to smart. They knew exactly what you were up to so they figured they will wait until either you left or the dark. I know this is obvious but it just shows how smart they are. great videos.
Man, such a tense and anxious episode! Great viewing though.
This is a great video thanks for sharing I watch Shawn all the time
That is good information and I thank you for passing it on, but if I ever find a rat in my house, I'll be too busy calling to reserve a rental truck and packing to search for the entry location.
Great job that was a ton of dangerous work ,thank you!
Now that poor rat has to explain to his wife where he's been all this time...
"Honey I just want a DRINK!"
Oh gosh the screms😰
Wild rats are totally different to domesticated/pet rats as I'm sure you know.
I have 5 pet rats and they are so sweet, funny, and have crazy-different personalities!
8:35 Help step bro!
This reminds me of Mutual of Omaha's WILD KINGDOM, except you play both Marlan Perkins and Jim Fowlers parts. I know you remember, Ol Marlan flying around in the helicopter while Jim wrestled an anaconda. Fun video, really helpful too as we are building a new house.
Wow, they can really squeeze down!
Rats are very smart!!! I actually trapped one that kept visiting my yard and eating the bird seeds. I was surprised how loud it was squealing. It was a live trap and uninjured. I gave to someone to take away. Fortunately I haven’t seen any more. A building was being torn down close to my home.
I think it would also be interesting to see how they can fit through rectangular gaps. They are more common than round holes. Like a garage door that isn't fully closed or a poorly fit basement door.
Would be interesting to see your mouse test again, with mice forced to escape as opposed to entering the box. Great video!
Glad to see you wearing gloves for this test. It was enlightening to see how hard they tried in the dark, vs your control environment. Please protect yourself, as you said these creatures carry disease.
Oh you're using a different account now?
Great vid, Shawn! Just be careful those suckers don't bite you! Know you have tons of experience but...seems like the wild ones vould be rabid!
Great test. Please do the same as you did with the mice and test the clearance on a flat shaped hole. I love your dedication!
This was very informative, good job and content 👍
You’re truly the best I followed you from the beginning. God bless you from Colorado.
It's been quite awhile since i watched. Ive been missing out. Great content
Love this test series! But i would like to see a test if they can tell if something has come in contact with humans and avoid it.
O how rat like to sneak right past you...twice...not like they have a reputation for this or anything 😂
My guess is that as long as they're in the light, with you being there acting the big scary predator, they are too frightened (or perhaps angry) to figure it out properly, but as soon as they're in their element they calm down some and manage to slip out.
I mean, they know you're blind in the dark, that's why that rat ran past you to escape instead of going the other way or attacking you.
Mr. Woods. I am always entertained by your videos. But, with all due respect, you are out of your damn mind for doing this experiment with the rats. Thank God you weren't bitten.
Awesome video man. The Minkman needs to know this. LOL
This is the best rat channel of them all. Excellent videos! 👍
Your carpentry skills are brilliant
Thanks for the metric conversion Shawn.
The cliché I keep hearing is “a hole the diameter of a quarter.” That’s 0.955 inch.
I’m now skeptical of that for a full-grown rat, not surprisingly.
I kinda wanna see a Shawn Woods rat / mouse olympics now haha.
Shawn, Good info to know! I've been trying to wire snare fruit rats in my garden to no avail. What would be the best diameter to set it at?😮
I hope one day some scientist will appreciate your tests.
Q: how small of hole can skunks, wolverines bears and cougars squeeze through?
Are you volunteering to LIVE catch those creatures?
Man I really need to know! Bears keep getting into my house and I just don't know where they are coming in from!!!
I've seen a skunk crawl into a old 3" pipe before.
I watched a small skunk fit through a chain link fence hole, they are all fur.
Enjoyable vid Shaun. I did liked you were trying to experiment although I was getting a bit concered for the rat that couldn't get out for 2 days as it was without water. However I don't see the point of this experiment....the hole size needs to be small enough to trap them all, not just the oldies! I use 1/4" mesh live traps for that reason.
😂
Thanks for showing us the metric units!
Wow - super-aggressive! Nice videography of the transition scenes (assembly/setup). But when it was pitch black, and the rat scooted right past your bare hand, you were risking a nasty bite. Gloves?
Great video
Rodents are so crazy sneaky. Wild that it went right past you like that
I'm curious, when dealing with wild rats, are you in an accessory structure? I can't imagine chancing a random release in a dwelling... Please understand, I'm not trying to be critical, as I said above, I'm curious. Your experimentation area looks well lit and maybe even heated...
Bill
I'm pretty sure it's a barn, 100% sure it's an outdoor building.
Now THIS is ENTERTAINMENT! You won't see *this* on "The Bachelorette"!
Hiya Shawn, great vids as usual. I take it the cage traps are shop bought. is there a chance you could show how to make them. You seem to have replicated all the other traps .
Good work Crawdaddy.
i love these tests
Oh Lordy, that Rat is a beast!
Not exactly on topic, but: I was thinking about bucket traps meant to kill with water, and if there were a way to make it more humane by adding something that make it more humane--like a paralysis agent or something. Is this remotely feasible?
Most bucket traps aren’t designed to kill, they just trap the mice in the bucket. How you deal with them afterwards is up to you.
I feel like the rats could have gone through the smaller holes with ease but just because they knew you were there they didn't wanna escape, but the second it was dark they immediately ran.
Could do a video for a slit, like the crack under a door. Do for mice too. Kind of scary how small of a hole/slit they can squeeze through!
He did a vid on mice, with both holes and slits, last week... but it was for entry only, not escape.
Bro said peace out 6:33
The flip phone took me out 🤣🤣🤣
He would be best friends with Dr Disrespect 😂😂
how many pounds of the sunflower seeds do you feed the wild rats and mice every year (in traps)
He is single handedly keeping his local supplier in buisness 😂😂
@@joshg6491😂
Talk about a symbiotic relationship
The rats have their head lights on.
Great video.
Hi Shawn you do all your tests in the barn so do you let the rats live so you have a constant supply of rats to carry your tests out
You crazy man!
Holy crap! That was some angry rat.
I couldn’t guess what hole those rats were going to go through but I know that you’ve definitely got a rat problem!
I would love to see this with mice, especially for stuff like compost bins
He did that in a previous video
That was last Monday’s video.
Yeah, what was my youtube not displaying that properly, for whatever reason - thanks though :)
I think Mattias Wandel did some videos on this topic as well, including mazes, maybe take a look?
next test it on rectangular holes
INTERESTING
Sean Ross, of GROQ, looks and sounds a lot like Shawn Woods. Incredible.
This guy’s barn sounds like a total nightmare.
You really earned your pay on this video lol
Not heard of a head torch, Shawn … 😂
4:52 😂 lmaoooo
I remember thinking I'd contained a mouse in a tank with a 1cm mesh lid. Guess what in the morning no mouse 😑
They're so cute though...
at least that big one didn't try to gnaw your face off.
Hey Shawn! Another video that might be interesting is to see what types of materials Rats and Mice can chew through!
He did a video on that some time ago.
@@lucasread1743 good to know! Thanks!
Mission failed successfully, Shawn!
These rats are finally being fed up with your traps throughout these years, so now they started getting aggressive with you.
Part of me thinks those rats were sitting in that box cuz they had a decent supply of food in there SuperVinlin
Gloves would be a real smart move
Next, could you please do this test with 🐻 BLACK BEARS? 🐻
Thanks ahead of time!🙄😅😂🤣🤣🤣
Very good video
Lucky you didn’t get bit when they got out shaun
Crazy how my pet rats are the same species but act so differently from their wild counterpart
5:00 I wonder if this is what aliens do to abducted humans?
Glad u are ok tho.
Who else is watching shawn while they at work?👨🏾🔧
Not me
Retired 😂
Bingo

What is your trick for catching rats in live traps? You make it look so easy. I have very smart rats in the shed, they will steal all the bait and not get caught. I even use the same type of traps you have in this video.
I think he leaves the traps open and unset with bait for a week or two to get them comfortable with the trap being in the area. Lul them into a false sense of security.
I baited kill traps but didnt set them for a few days to get them used to free food and then set the traps. A couple hours later, I had it in the trap.
So lulling them into a sense of free food and no risk of being caught or killed helped a lot
Thanks for the reply. I guess that’s basically what I’m doing because they take the bait without setting it off. Maybe one of these days they’ll get complacent and step on the trigger plate. Thanks for the info. I’ve been watching your videos for years. I really loved the primitive survival traps you’ve made in your older videos. 😊
try putting bait under the trigger pad@@Plinkster
That’s a great idea. I will try that. Thanks fur-trader.
Good interesting vid
