- Experimenting with how small a home a mouse is able to fit through. But it didn't go as planned. I had a lazy mouse, and a hard working invading shrew.

Update: Two days later, the shrew squeezed itself through the 16.5 mm hole:

Everytime the mouse squeezes through a hole it takes a shit. I reckon that when you get in a tight spot shit happens.

I worked as security years back and have seen mice fit into a 1/4 inch seem that borders a big freight scale.

The problem is that those holes were metric, and the mice are imperial.
The fit was so tight that every time they went through the hole some poop was squeezed out of the little critters.

Ida Hegland, You would be surprised how many holes have been made in a home for pipes, TV cables, electric wiring and not filled in by service person, that drills them. Also if the hole isn't quite big enough rodents will chew them bigger pretty quickly, especially in the fall.

Nice work! Question: If the thickness of the material through which these holes are drilled is reduced, can we guess that passage becomes easier? I would think yes, because the deformation to rib cage etc necessary would make (for instance) a 16.5mm hole in 1/4"|6mm material a lot easier to push through.

I had one of my cats decimated a whole shrew colony without having to do anything. They are very stubborn and stupid animals - constantly getting into harms way. My cat learned very quickly to just wait at the edge of our fence for these guys to make their way onto our property. No real work needed. Once they entered, my cat had a new toy to play with for a while. Even my other cat who is missing a leg caught one. Pretty hilarious. I can only wonder if maybe they're good at breeding.
Shrews can starve to death if they do not eat for 3 hours. They have incredibly ramped up metabolisms so they must have great determination and be more risky with their lives.

Mouse could potentially get through the second set of holes but it learned that with less effort all it has to do is make a sad attempt, run away, and when the experimenter puts more peanut butter before and around the holes, it will not have to work as hard. Smart mouse. Assuming same mouse everytime. Gotta do the experiment a little more controlled.
