- I’d be willing to bet you’ve been told to squeeze your shoulder blades together before. In certain situations, it may be appropriate, but in my opinion, it is a way overused cue. Squeezing your shoulder blades together can make a winging scapula worse especially if you have scoliosis.
When you consider the convex side of scoliosis, it is rotated, and the ribcage rounds out further than a symmetrical spine would. The shoulder blade that rests on top of the rib cage loses its congruency causing it to tip forward and wing away from the body. It might help to think of it as a puzzle piece trying to fit into the wrong spot.
Doing scapular retractions and rows likely won’t help you much if you have a winged scapula and scoliosis.
A few months ago, I received a DM from someone on Instagram asking if I have any videos on improving a winging scapula. So, this one’s for you Colleen!
Watch the video below to learn more about why folks with scoliosis are prone to having a winged scapula and try a few exercises that can be helpful to address your symptoms.

Thank you SO much! I've suffered from chronic winged scapula pain correlated with my scoliosis for years - I've gone to several PTs and spent a lot of money, and doing the exercises from this one 5-minute video is the first thing that has brought real relief from the pain.
If you have any more winged scapula exercises that you can share, I would love to learn more that I can do to reverse years of this issue.

You’re welcome! I hope it helps:)
Interesting. I have scoliosis and ankylosing spondylitis and kindve naturally discovered these over the years. AthleanX has been an amazing source for me trying to combat both…. Id also recommend a lat “pullover” to strengthen the serratis as i find that one really weak n prone to spasms when starting out too. I do it in the gym with a rope but u can modify with bands to make it work.
Thank you!!
You’re welcome!
One side of my chest is out, so would like be helpful
Can I use resistance loop band instead of that band?
Depending on how wide it is, yes. If it’s too thin and narrow it won’t work very well
Thanks honey
You're welcome!
Does anyone ever get so sore that it makes your stomach sick? My shoulder and ribs are unbearably sore and uncomfortable today.... Sigh
