came here expecting a few exercises for a muscle - what i got was an entire explanation of problems and fixes, activation and control :D im very happy right now :P
I can tell Eric knows what he's talking about. I've had a shoulder injury for 12 months that originally left me unable to lift my arm. After visiting countless doctors, physios, osteopaths, and other specialists, I have learned a lot about shoulder stability and everything that goes into it. What Eric is saying is true and detailed. There is A LOT of bullshit out there on RUclips when it comes to shoulder rehab exercises. But Eric knows what he's talking about. Strengthening your serratus anterior WILL help you if you have shoulder issues. I'm trying these exercises right now (just finished the robots) and BOY are they tough haha. I didn't realise I had such limited mobility. But I can feel they work the right muscles. It will take a while to see results (like anything you do with the body) but these are some good exercises. Thanks Eric.
@@PrecisionMovementCoach You're welcome bro, they're well-deserved! It honestly really excites me when I see someone who is sharing REAL, genuinely useful information on RUclips. I can't stress it enough, but there is SO MUCH rubbish out there when it comes to shoulder rehab videos (and I know you know that, because you highlight it in your videos). You know what made me click on your videos? It was one word you used in one of your titles: "amnesia". Now, ironically, this isn't a word that would necessarily make many people click on the video (because many people look for words like "FIX" and "INSTANT", which is how these trash RUclipsrs capitalise on people's desperation). But as someone who has been researching this for the last 12 months, it intrigued me because I thought: "is he going to talk about how key muscles can forget to engage if you haven't used them for a while due to injury"? Sure enough, you did! Now, after months of research, I realise just how IMPORTANT it is to reprogram your muscles to engage. This is a KEY concept that these trash RUclipsrs never talk about, because they just regurgitate all the other nonsense that they hear from OTHER trash RUclipsrs (such as keeping the shoulder blades pinched and depressed throughout every movement). When I heard you talk about the need to re-educate your muscles to encourage them to engage so that the shoulder can move properly, I knew you knew what you were talking about. Sorry for the long message, but it genuinely excites me that there is someone out there giving real advice that works. No clickbait, no rubbish, just straight facts. I've subscribed to your channel because you deserve it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have literally spent a small fortune trying to fix the pain in my shoulder and neck. I think the problem is due to the serratus anterior...after trying the Robot exercise just once the pain at the base of my levator scapulae eased up a lot. No one else explained the anatomy and dynamics of the muscles before to me. I REALLY APPRECIATE THIS VIDEO. YOU ARE AWESOME!!!
I've been training in gym for some years and still I noticed I got scapular winging. And my right shoulder was a bit rounded, now it's a lot better. For two months I've been stretching muscles around serratus anterior daily. Also I've been strengthening serratus anteriors 5 times per a week. Now I got some new movements to improve that strength and stability. Those push ups I've been doing but I got one tip from you that I've noticed while doing the push ups but I wasn't sure should I do it like that. You are really helping. You even help my mind because I feel better when I have a new tools to fix this issue. Big thanks from Finland.
I've been suffering with shoulder impingement in the left shoulder now for about 3 months. Although, I've been working my rotator cuff muscles my shoulder still felt "locked" and I was unable to do a push up. I want to thank you so much for this video, because after the robot exercise I finally feel my serratus anterior working and I am able to do the easier version of the push up plus shown in your video. It feels amazing to be able to do a push up after so many months of trying and failure! Thank you so much again!!!!
Thanks so much for this. After years of pain, I finally figured out that the Serratus was responsible. Now it’s time to build it back up. Don’t give up on me buddy 😅
@@fisabilillah.g261 Sister 😊 Hey too, sister (or brother) Oh no, sorry to hear that. My pain is much better. Painkillers don’t work. BUT. I have a little morning routine where I begin with neck stretches, up down, side to side. Then some exercises for core ( plank, reverse plank, some choice yoga poses) then move my arms around like swimming, then stretch them, and finally, walk into a corner of the room, put my hands on either side and try to get further into that corner ( stretches out the muscles in the front) I’ve had to experiment with the exercises that work for me, how long, how many etc, but whilst these targeted exercises are fantastic. Keeping a strong back and stretching out regularly will hopefully prevent it getting back into that state. Because your whole body is connected. All the muscles support each other. I can’t stress how much less pain I’ve had, doing even just a few exercises every day. 😊

@@fisabilillah.g261 Aww, sister, you must be exhausted. I feel for you. Painkillers don’t work, but I have found that ibuprofen gel and heat (like a hot water bottle or those bean bags that you microwave) can help you enough to to rest. Do you have tight muscles in general? They might be getting tight if you are stressed, which can lead to more pain. Personally, this video helped me, but not immediately. It made me realise that my shoulders and arms were so tight that I struggled to do any exercise. When I started doing arm exercises , it hurt! But now, a few months and no pain.

Thanx man, that's helped me a lots! After first time working with those scapula pushups and scapula levator stretches my entire shoulder and neck hurts no more... good videos !
I started having this problem in August 2023. I have an AP labrum tear but full ROM and besides overuse soreness from lifting I never had a huge issues. But in August I had more pain and even fourth/fifth digit numbness. Had a bunch of massage therapy sessions thinking it was a lat strain possible grade 2/3 so I went to my orthopedic doctor who offered me surgery on my labrum in 2018 (still no surgery) and he wasn’t impressed with new shoulder x-rays outside of some new arthritis seen. Still full ROM and musculature that doesn’t give me pain on physical exam. I used TENS machine on the shoulder and took about 2 months off with vast improvements. I had no more numbness in my fingers and even my lower lat and anterior shoulder soreness improved. But in the past two weeks I have recreated this soreness into the midaxillary and chest wall and after heavy loaded dumbbell bench I get soreness beneath the nipple. I believe now from all these videos it’s serratus muscle issue. Thank you for this video and I wish there was more like it. Fingers crossed I can strengthen this deficiency and be pain free (relatively) one day.

Wow, really helpful! Thank you very much! I have been unable to lie in bed without feeling pain for several nights now. I felt immediate effect and relief. Thank you again, sir!
Fantastic information, many thanks! After years of trying to force my shoulders back without success today I learned the important role of the serratus anterior. Utilizing these mobility exercises allows the shoulders to align naturally. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🤍🧘
Thank you for this video ! Very helpful and also appreciate the detail in how you explain both the function of the scapular and take time to go over the exercises. Seen some new ones here :)
Ive been dealing with shoulder and scapular, non-stop pain, tightness and this weird feeling on my skin which I think is from a nerve. I believe this is the result of my overtraining a year ago with the chest fly machine and not training my back at all, combined with sitting in front of my computer. A YEAR! Im encouraged watching this and will add this in immediately to my youtube rehab. I wish you were local to me (Seattle), I'd go see you immediately.
Incredible, really helpful and grateful for this. I do alot of swimming and surf Lifesaving, injured my shoulder lifting scaffolding tubes on my shoulder. Have not felt right since, I was lucky not to dislocate it. Watching this helped identify the issue, and after starting the exercises immediately I felt something improve. What a relief and thanks, amazing work
Thank you, Dr. E. I carry an extension ladder for work and had an accident about 2 months ago. This is a great help and actually points me in the right direction, according to the symptoms and explanation that you gave. I plan to visit my PCP if the symptoms worsen or if I don't find any relief. Thanks, again.
Wow. I have had extreme weakness and instability in my left shoulder. I have some pretty bad winging on both sides as well. Need to step it up and hit the lower traps and serratus anterior. Thank you for this!
Exactly same as you mate, my left arm is much weaker than my right. I believe this is my problem too and these are the exercises needed. Have you seen any improvement?
This is so excellent. Most videos on RUclips don’t even address this muscle anyway. You really know what you’re talking about. Thank you so much . your explanations are wonderful. !!!!✔️👍
Love the way you explain everything! And I finally figured out why my overhead stretch caused my shoulder impingement cus I kept my shoulders down and back. Thank you!! Some of the ones you talked about are like somatic exercises. Cus that area of my back gets so messed up whenever I do other strengthening exercises, I do have scoliosis too. I'm going to try the ones you suggested!
Hi, I have bilateral shoulder impingement & shoulder dyskinesia with winging of scapulae. I like the explanation in each exercise. Would like to have suggestions for my shoulder condition.
Broke my neck 20 yrs ago, some paralysis around left shoulder and scapula, and neither docs nor physio have a clue, so I have done my best alone. Now, thanks to this info, my best just improved a lot.
Thank you so much for this video! I am working with left shoulder instability issues, as well as both of my shoulders are rounded/tight pectoral muscles. As a dancer often times we are told/tell our students to keep their shoulders down away from their ears so when we are doing movements where we are reaching above our heads, our shoulders aren't shrugging up by our ears. I'm guessing by allowing the shoulders allowing to move upward when reaching up is very different than allowing the shoulders to shrug? Not sure if my question makes sense or not.
Your question does make sense but I want to make sure that I understand which body parts you are asking about. The shoulder complex includes 4 parts. The SC joint, the AC joint, the scapula, and the GH joint. The last being typically what people refer to when they refer to the "shoulder". When the arms are held at the sides or overhead and the scapulae are elevated the GH joint rises and we call this shrugging. Essentially, allowing the shoulders to move upward when reaching up is the same movement as allowing the shoulders to shrug. Both involve scapular elevation. Does that answer your question or are you asking something different? - Coach Joshua, Team PM
@@PrecisionMovementCoach it does, so then with your knowledge would you say that training dancers to keep "shoulders away from ears" is a bad thing? I know dancers are not Physical Therapists by any means but I've had very very knowledgeable teachers who have strong kinesiology understanding that will basically say the same thing. Maybe there is a balance of not overly lifting the shoulders and not completely pushing the shoulders down to inhibit natural movement of the shoulders?? Hmmm. This is very interesting!
@@PrecisionMovementCoach I have a lot of teachers who understand function over aesthetic and want to teach safe movement practices but even then it's always "keep your shoulders down your back/along your ribcage...shoulders away from ears" and other types of cuing.
Training dancers to do that is not a bad thing and it is part of the discipline. Furthermore, because dancers have such great body awareness and control it will likely not cause problems for them outside of the studio as long as they don't try to follow that cue all of the time. We typically recommend not following that cue to non-dancers or to people when they are doing resistance training as it can disrupt the natural shoulder rhythm. That is a different setting for a different population for different reasons though. This article can give you insight into this: www.precisionmovement.coach/movement-myth-shoulder-blades-down-and-back/ I hope that makes sense. - Coach Joshua, Team PM
Thank you so much bro. Quick story. I tore my front rotator cuff when I was 17 and I’m now 25 still a beast. Push through it but now I’m having stinging pain in rhomboids and up to my cervical neck and realized it due to poor serratus anterior due to other muscles compensating. Thank you for this video and the other about speculator levator. #lifesaver
I tried some of the exercises and because of my scapular winging on one side i cant keep my shoulder blade down and back. I feel the muscle engading on the non winged side but not the winged side. Any suggestions?
I cannot thank you enough I have lateral winging of my scapula from neck surgery from a cancer operation . I hope I can benefit from these I am 63 and in great shape, non smoker , non drinker, no medication

I believe now from all these videos it’s serratus muscle issue. Thank you for this video and I wish there was more like it. Fingers crossed I can strengthen this deficiency and be pain free (relatively) one day.
Wow! That's quite a journey.
Thanks for letting us know about your struggles. We are here to help.

thanks man, the palm push tip was very helpful
Thank you so much! This actually gave my shoulder and back relief 🧡. I am suffering with severe osteoarthritis in my shoulder so this helped🙏
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for this! Helped me heaps now it's been over a month
You're very welcome!
Wow, really helpful! Thank you very much! I have been unable to lie in bed without feeling pain for several nights now. I felt immediate effect and relief. Thank you again, sir!
You're very welcome!
okay, this is the second video of yours i've ever seen. and i'm already a huge fan. thank you.
Wow, thank you!
Fantastic information, many thanks! After years of trying to force my shoulders back without success today I learned the important role of the serratus anterior. Utilizing these mobility exercises allows the shoulders to align naturally. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🤍🧘
Glad it helped!
Mad respect ✊🏼 you seem to know more about the serratus anterior and how it functions than the surgeon I consulted with
Thanks! - Coach Joshua, Team PM
Great information and outstanding teaching style
Been dealing with levator issues for 1yr now. Have integrated these movements into regular routines. Feeling great .Ty so much!!
Happy to help!
Thank you for this video ! Very helpful and also appreciate the detail in how you explain both the function of the scapular and take time to go over the exercises. Seen some new ones here :)
Thanks for watching and your kind words!
You got this!
You deserve way more subs than this.. thank you for the information.. your exercises definitely helped.
How long dif it take to get rid of winged scapula?
Incredible, really helpful and grateful for this. I do alot of swimming and surf Lifesaving, injured my shoulder lifting scaffolding tubes on my shoulder. Have not felt right since, I was lucky not to dislocate it. Watching this helped identify the issue, and after starting the exercises immediately I felt something improve. What a relief and thanks, amazing work
Happy to help!
Great video, very informative and you explain everything very well
Thank you, Dr. E. I carry an extension ladder for work and had an accident about 2 months ago. This is a great help and actually points me in the right direction, according to the symptoms and explanation that you gave. I plan to visit my PCP if the symptoms worsen or if I don't find any relief. Thanks, again.
Thanks for following along and keep us posted on your progress :)
Good stuff, thanks a lot. Love the ending too haha
Very well explained and idea to release myofacia is superb. Thanks indeed
Glad that you think so and you are welcome :)
Wow. I have had extreme weakness and instability in my left shoulder. I have some pretty bad winging on both sides as well. Need to step it up and hit the lower traps and serratus anterior.
Thank you for this!
You are welcome! Check out this article for ideas on your winging: www.precisionmovement.coach/winged-scapula-exercises/ - Team PM
Much appreciated :)
Thanks for following along!
Now, thanks to this info, my best just improved a lot.
... and your best is still yet to come
Amazing work, Eric!! Thank you for all you do.
My pleasure!
I got to this serratus video from your levator scapulae video. THANK YOU. I have needed this information for a long time.
You are so welcome!
This was really helpful! Thank you!
Happy to help and thanks for watching :)
this man is a genius
Much appreciated :)
Thanks you’re the man
Happy to help and thanks for watching :)
Excellent demonstration of the motion needed to fix this. Thanks.
Happy to help!
This article can give you insight into this: www.precisionmovement.coach/movement-myth-shoulder-blades-down-and-back/
I hope that makes sense.

@@PrecisionMovementCoach thank you so much! Very helpful
Very clear and I love your accent. Many thanks. Great job and video.

Loved it
Much appreciated :)
#lifesaver
You are welcome and thanks for watching :)
I tried some of the exercises and because of my scapular winging on one side i cant keep my shoulder blade down and back. I feel the muscle engading on the non winged side but not the winged side. Any suggestions?
