The Pacific Main Title Sequence (Animatic) - Intro - Opening Credits - Director's Cut

- Опубликовано: 13 мар 2010
- Directed by Steve Fuller. This was the animatic that won us the job. This has a few drawing I did that didn't make it into the final. There were 33 in all I think. It was a lot of fun to work on. Good to work with pencils and charcoal again. One of the last projects I worked on at Imaginary Forces. Thanks to: Lauren, Cara, Corey, Chase, Lizzy, Emily, Peter and all the animators that helped out with this. Gary Goetzman and Tony To really pushed us on this one, but for the best.

Analysis...
Overall, the music evokes the sadness of Honor, the battlefield of Glory, paid for with the blood of boys. Horrible, yet sometimes unavoidable, and calling upon us to respect and remembrance.
If listened at higher volume or headset, there is tympani (base drum) that evokes distant explosions.
The occasional red stain evokes both blood and the Japanese Rising Sun flag
.
The charcoal is used as a drawing implement, but when fractured, evokes both shrapnel and emotion....the intense emotion of the Artist, because the Artist is remembering. He was there. This is his story.
This song chokes me up every time.
и меня тоже бро
You can't lie, this theme gives you goosebumps
Amazing. As others have said, The Pacific has the best opening sequence I've ever seen on television. The director's cut is visionary.
That build up at 1:30 always sends chills down my spine!
This is the only show up to date where I love the opening credits enough to watch every time I fire up a chapter.
Artistic and powerful.
Next to "Game of Thrones", this is one of the best intros of the last ten years. Maybe ever.
I am Japanese. All the time when I watch this opening make me emotional. Music and Japanese flag on the back. It’s complicated feeling but I really appreciate to made this drama series.
It's nothing to do with you per se. The government and emperor were different at that point of time
I am Chinese, I don't hate you, because you are not ww2 jap.
In ww2, japs real kill so many people.
Love and peace.
After watching this I started taking videos of me writing on paper with a pencil
So beautiful. Makes me feel for all the our beloved fallen soldiers ❤️
This was an earlier cut that I liked better. We worked on this over a long period of time, so it kept changing along the way. I wound up doing something like 33 drawings all together. I feel like it was at it's best around this time. I like the drawing we had in this one, and the visual linked best with the high points in the score.
Beautiful music, I can never get tired of it
I have heard this theme like ten times now and every time I hear it, my breath catches in my throat and tears come to my eyes. You know what it is? It's that low, mournful, understated, four-note horn refrain. The theme manages to use it like 5 times and each time it's different - says something different but always sad and proud at the same time. "We are Marines" it says "This is where we fought. This is where we died, this is who we WERE"...amazing
Glad to see some people share my feelings
The Music And The Charcoal Breaking,The Picture Into The Faces Was Brilliant,Well Done.(I Love Watching The Pacific And Seeing This Part.)
I miss my grandfather. Capt 163rd infantry, New Guinea, received wounds as first lieutenant, stormed the beaches again after receiving the purple hear, made captain later during the war. He fought this war to end all wars. Thank you Grandfather for serving this great nation. Died November 13th 2000
Brings tears to my eye.
This should have way more views than it does! Well done Mr. Fuller!
one of the most beautiful intros ever
This is an amazing piece of music and art. Thankyou for the upload. Please keep making more art. This team is truly talented.
Really, excellent job. This intro really sets the tone for the series.
Simply amazing! One of the best and most memorable openings I've ever seen. Artistic, emotional, powerful.... the adjectives could go on and on.
This is awesome work. I could watch this all day. Thanks!
Just beautiful. I have watched this opening together with music and am awed. Everything about it including just the gritty cuts into the charcoal it's all alive. Thank you.
Such an amazing intro, and the music goes beautifully with it.
awesome intro! great job all of you!
You guys did an awesome job. I never skipped this opening.
The one TV series into that I would never skip
Watched the series through once and its very touching. the only series i've waited to the exact release so i can watch it. and now i'm watching it through out again and even now this theme and opening gives me chills.
Favourite series by far. good job
This is a beautiful beginning to a wonderful series. My great uncle died on Iwo Jima and he has always been a hero to me. So when I watch this it reminds me of him and the sacrifice he made.
THIS IS REALLY WELL DONE
amazing :x i love your intro, this and the official one. beautiful
This is just amazing.
It's insane how great this is
I love this Directors cut. Well done. It stirs so many emotions.
I worked on this show on set doing the prosthetics blood guts and death for about 10 months.
Cheers jac
love this so much. amazing
Congratulations! Amazing brilliant movie where all details perfectly fit to each other! The intro is just marvealous - your animations joined together with at the moment famous theme,
Thanks, Karol from Poland
Beautiful.
I LOVE THIS OPENING!!!! I love the Band of Brothers opening, but this one is just amazing. I love it when the drawings come to life. The music is perfect for the theme. It's just awesome. It gave me chills watching this for the first time. Great work!!!!
@stevefullertv Stunning work man! RESPECT! Thanks for uploading this :-)
i love this music!! and the charcoal is sooo cool! :D
I remember seeing you work on this when I popped in at the office that day. Great work! Really amazing imagery and sequencing between animation/drawing and film clips.
BEAUTIFUL ... EPIC !
That sounds like a fun job. And there's a lot of blood and guts. From the rough cuts I saw it all looked very real.
God, this is brilliant.
those drawings add a special significant into the movie for those watching the series and for those men that have been in a war.
Those intros is a work of art
Lovely music,Lovely clip!
Watching this gave me chills.
I do love this intro. Great stuff.
Thanks so much. So nice to hear.
Great series
This is part of my personal portfolio. I am the author of this work. A piece that I made at a company that was hired by Playtone and HBO.
I got epic chills when I watched this.
Sometimes I don't want to watch the whole episode, but I do wanna some scenes from the show, so I just watch the opening and everytime I get satisfyed. Steve, you rules!! Thanks for this!
Hell of a job my friend. I love it
One of the best intros to such an amazing series. A homage to the heroic American fighting men in the Pacific Theater.
Excellent music, excellent drawings, excellent openings. I usually get bored by WWII movie opening titles, but this one I always sit through and enjoy.
Great intro, great music great effects top class it about time we had something that's about the pacific war, two much about Europe. Can't wait for next Sunday can't even wait till it comes out in blu ray
Since we have the artist here and he is viewing these comments I want also to give my sincere congratulations on a wonderful job. Very good work sir.
Mr. Fuller,
I think I've said this before but I'll say it again. I think this is the best opening sequence I've ever seen. I've done a ton of research trying to figure out how to do what you do sir with no success. You and your team truly are artists and should be commended.
Loved your intro. When the series first showed I always made sure I was settled so I could watch the intro. Inspirational and the music behind is awesome. You contributed to a iconic, great and successful series.
I was inspired by the the music of Hans Zimmer, Geoff Zanelli & Blake Neely and used it for educational purposes for a Tribute video of my Dad's hero, a Marine who fought in the Pacific, Roy Auer, here on RUclips.
Hope to see your work in future more often.
Yeah! that would be awesome.
i watch the series in 720p high definition glory.. this intro sequence brings me the freakin chills with the soundtrack and seeing the individual coal flakes in the tiniest detail makes me love the quality that goes into the series more
Fantastic!!!
Your work is amazing. The drawings are incredibly evocative and blend so well with the music. I particularly like your one of the soldier in the rain (it's in the final, didn't see it in this one.) I must also compliment the use of the charcoal sticks as props, both rolling into place and when they splinter.
Overall, superbly done!
Your reasoning and explanation of approach does make a lot of sense, and does set the stage for the time and place of the series. I just wanted to share my thoughts, and perhaps you'll find them interesting. Always interesting how different people see different things in art.
@stevefullertv Thanks for the reply.I'm currently working in charcole at the minute, and it's amazing what can be achieved with what is essentially just a burnt peice of wood. Such a simple medium that gives a very dramatic effect and the idea to use it for the intro was genius. Very well done.
the greatest intro i have ever seen but cannot believe this didnt win that emmy, so sad really thought it was a winner :( beautiful design with wonderful music.
fools for not giving you that emmy and losing to that 1 minute segment to bored to death >:I
I'm glad to hear that. It means it worked!
Thanks so much.
Hans Zimmer......absolutly Brilliant!!!!! THANK YPOU!!!!!!!!
SPIELBERG and HANKS.......I am sooo inspired becasue of you.
This opening sequence actually inspired me to pick up the charcoals again.
wow. thank you so much.
Every time i listen to this it reminds me of what i want to be and the history that comes with the job
Very informative, thanks for the reply!
Great job!
I feel like picking up my pencils again!
This IS the original. This was one cut on a long road to the final cut. I think this is when it was at it's most impactful stage.
@stevefullertv The intro was composed beautifully. I can see why many drawings had to be cut as they probably wanted to convey that the pacific focuses on the 3 marines sledge, leckie and john. The best parts are how the charcoal medium excess blends into the explosions, and the closeup of the charcoal being sharpened symbolic of the weapons used in war.
I listen to a ton of musical scores..a TON but I honestly think this one has to be among the greats. Very few scores hit you with the emotional impact that this one does.
Prob one of the most beautiful opening sequences ever. Paired with Hans Zimmer...stunning.
This is awesome, i love the shots that start at 2:09! Shame that didn't make the cut!
the music in this intro is so epic
amazing mannnnn
Truly beautiful. Especially at the very beginning where there were two beatings on a drum signifying the start of the theme, giving listners a dramatic feeling. The only bad thing about it is that it is short.
Thank you! That means a lot to me.
On ne se lasse pas de l'écouter
Just beautiful, a beatiful piece of work. I ish i could draw as good.
this has to be the best opening to ANYTHING on the face of the planet.
i am extremely determined to learn this on piano. i will play with as much intensity as i can in memory of those who have died protecting our freedom.
The best ost in my life
This was the only show I ever watched where I did not fast forward through the intro.
Fucking amazing music, and a fucking amazing intro sequence. Gives me goosebumps.
It wasn't that I saw stuff from your other work that made me think you did it, I just thought of you as I was seeing them. :-)
Anyway, you really sold it.
I enjoy both the Band of Brothers intro and The Pacific intro's. They are both unique and special in their own way. I especially like the charcoal drawings in this coming to life.
the process is pretty much as you guessed it. Storyboards, motion tests etc. won the pitch.
It's opening and the song is so epic
@jeremiahjw The casio stuff was replaced by Phantom footage in the final piece. But in this version, which is our animatic it's used in a few places. When the two lines make a cross, the swipe at the end before Tom Hanks credit. I think it was 300fps.
EPIC.
Respect to all those who lost their lives during the WW2.
So far so good. needs just a tiny bit more action sequences but its got a magnificent story line. i'll be watching tonight
Everything Spielberg touchs has a great soundtrack
Your drawings are beautiful
the most epic pencil in the world.
