The Japanese, the stories that he told me was mental, he was in the Air Force so when he was going to take off 11 kamakazies struck his naval and he had to jump off the side of the naval to survive, he said the fall was the most painful thing in his life, he ended up fighting on ground with no experience because he had no plane. He died in 2020 aged 94, I was so proud that I was related and met one of the most brave men in the world, and I’m sure your dad was too.

By far the saddest moment in the entire series aside from the Holocaust in episode 9 that I just remembered is Malarkey mocking a German soldier in Day of Days. Malarkey said "Where're you from son" in a condescending tone thinking that he couldn't understand him. Then the soldier responds in an American accent with "Eugene Oregon". Stunned, Malarkey glanced back and then shared that he too was from Oregon. They shared a nice friendly exchange of life experiences before Malarkey was forced to leave. They said their goodbyes and Malarkey walked on. A little ways down the road, he heard gunfire from a M1A1 Thompson behind him. He turned to see that all the German POW's, including the man he had just befriended, were gunned down in cold blood by Lt. Speirs.

One of the greatest TV series ever produced. I remember watching it when it was released.
Whilst it's recollection of war, it's greatest feature was the fantastic depiction of "MEN" banding together to achieve a common goal of ridding the world of tyranny. It was also a wonderful representation of the great love and devotion these men had for each other in face of grave danger.
It's an absolute shame in today's woke modern world, the way society criticise men banding together in the same way to achieve and/or complete difficult goals that the naysayers think are impossible.
Today these bonds are looked down upon as the "patriarchy" stealing everyone's opportunity and ruining the fabric of society.
Box them up whilst we don't need them they say, but as soon as a war like this emerges sometime in the future, they will expect men like this to be un-boxed and sent off to do the killing and possibly sacrifice everything dear to them!

This is the best ww2 mini series I've ever seen. This series has humour, friendship, etc and most importantly the brutality of war.
This opening has no song at all, just some instrument but it's very deep meaning.

They should show this during history class in high schools, could shape the younger generation and teach them important lessons for the future. If you see how most people behave (crazy, insane, greedy and self centered) you wouldn‘t believe we were once capable of forming great bands of brotherhood.

I'm more skeptical that people have changed that much. My father was from Detroit and served in the Pacific. A family story I heard was that my grandmother (obviously not at the time) went into a store near the end of the war; the economy was booming. Supposedly, she heard someone say "if only this war lasts long enough, I'll be able to pay of my mortgage." Obviously, with her son overseas, this infuriated her. Whether this actually happened or not, I obviously can't say, but there has always been plenty of greed and self-centeredness in the world. It isn't just today.

@@marcschneider4845 well thats because war help the great depression era. It helped people work and all of that stuff. With war everybody makes money, Including the poor. It's hard to agree and disagree with it since it has their pros and cons definitely.
