    Oh wow, a tiny electric spinning wheel!!
    I have a connective tissue disorder and spend a lot of time in bed, I don't think holding up a drop spindle or the posture to sit at a foot powered wheel would work for me. I just went to my first Fibershed event and have been mesmerized by spinning videos lately. I'm going to look into this, thank you!

      It’s the Electric Eel Wheel Nano2 by Dreaming Robots (aka the EEW Nano2). I have one, and it’s bigger sibling, the EEW 6.1). Both are absolutely wonderful and affordable e-spinners. I have serious back issues that resulted in nerve damage and a reduced capacity to use my right leg. Pain is a daily thing and I can’t treadle on a traditional wheel. But I can spin up a storm on these.
      With a laptop tray or even a shallow serving tray on your lap you can even spin in bed. Hook these spinners up to a battery (for the Nano you can use a phone charger battery) you don’t need an outlet. Spin on long car rides, in bed, in a chair, at home or elsewhere, it doesn’t matter anymore. And one of those phone charger batteries gets you hours and hours of spinning before you have to recharge it.
      Definitely a solution for anyone who has issues treadling or who likes to spin just about anywhere.

      @eddavanleemputten9232 thank you so much for chiming in and sharing your experience! Such great information, so good to know about the phone charger battery. As I watched the video, I was totally envisioning trying this with my laptop tray!

    • @eddavanleemputten9232
      @eddavanleemputten9232 11 дней назад +1

      @ - Depending on how you sit in your bed and the type of laptop tray you have, one of those cheap no-slip drawer liners helps to keep the spinning wheel securely in place on the tray while spinning: if the tray is of the type that has a pillow attached underneath and a textured surface that keeps the suction cups on the wheel from working properly for example.
      My SO recently joked that the only place he probably won’t find me spinning is the bathtub. Because so far, my Nano has been used:
      At the office
      At the kitchen table
      On the couch
      In bed
      At the doctor’s/dentist’s office (waiting room)
      At the hairdresser’s
      In the car
      At a friend’s place

      Soon it might even get used on an airplane. They tend to be finicky about knitting needles but not about spinning wheels. 😊

    Every time I see a video in my recommendations that says someone is learning how to spin, my heart does a little happy dance because in August of last year, that was me and in November of last year I got my Nano2. Spinning and knitting are my happy places. I get to play with fibre and now I also get to customise my yarns to exactly how I want them.
    I wish you lots of happiness behind your spinning wheel, and later making gorgeous things from your own, home spun yarns.

    Welcome to the addiction! :) Since I got my own wheel in May, I've lost a lot of knitting time to spinning, BUT spinning helps me relax and get grounded. I've had frustrating days at work that I got through just because I said, "When this is done, I can spin." I'm not sure how it works, but it works, and there's nothing like knitting with your own handspun yarn! I've made several "purr pads" for my cats--my first attempts resulted in a lot of chunky yarn, but that's perfect for the kitties--and recently finished a cowl for myself, plus I have handspun in stash that will be a Traveler shawl, socks, and a hat. It's so cool! I came home from Rhinebeck with more fiber than yarn!

    • @eddavanleemputten9232
      @eddavanleemputten9232 11 дней назад +1

      @@carlakempert1798 - I think it’s the combination of the rhythmic nature of the spinning itself, the soft purr of my e-spinner, the feel of the fibre and seeing that bobbin fill up. And the expectation of getting to use that hand spun yarn. 😊
      Not to mention the satisfaction of then knowing “I made that. From scratch.”
      The control freak in me also likes the fact that I am calling the shots on colour, yarn weight, fibre content, etc. 😅

    Oh, man, that was fun! And it makes me want to get out my wheel that hasn’t been touched in 15 years 😮. To use up the fiber that I moved 1200 miles and haven’t used in 15 years. Same conundrum that you mentioned, spinning time takes away from knitting time. Which is ironic because I wanted to learn to spin in the first because I loved knitting so much. Ah, such problems. You did amazingly well for your first try. Obviously, a natural. Thanks for sharing your learning process and kudos to Brianna for being a superb teacher.

    • @eddavanleemputten9232
      @eddavanleemputten9232 12 дней назад

      Go for it. I started to learn on spindles first (found out the drop spindle wasn’t my thing but the supported spindle was), quickly bought myself an EEW Nano2 (the wheel in this video) and now I’m seriously addicted to it. Last Summer I bought the larger EEW.
      My first spin ever happened in August of 2023. Haven’t regretted it for a minute. Home spun yarn is so nice to work with. You get to customise your yarn, your fibres, your colours, your blends. Weight for weight with identical fibre, if you shop smart, your yarn will cost less than commercial yarn. And you get to play with fibre/yarn for longer. That means over time, if you get an EEW of if you find a second hand treadle wheel your investment pays itself back. And as you’re entertaining yourself you’re not spending money elsewhere (couldn’t resist some healthy girl math 😂).

    You learned so quick!
    As far as plying goes. The way I learned is to ply in such a way, that when you let a single strand of plied yarn dangle in a u shape, it won't twist itself again. It just dangles in a u shape. This makes it very easy to work with. When you have overplied yarn (yarn that twists itself again) and start knitting with it, the fabric will go diagonally rather than straight up. Which might be fine for a hat, but very annoying if you make a cardigan and want the front opening to be vertical.

As my friends told me when I started: keep it forever, because it will never look like this again :) It's great that you learned on an e-spinner -- I've always thought that they're much easier to learn for the first time, since all you have to do is focus on drafting (versus a traditional wheel where you have to keep your feet going as well!). I also found it interesting that Briana taught you a more long-draw-type technique -- I'm still new and I generally use short-forward since it's easier for me.
