In fairness Willem Dafoe was perfectly cast he even looks like the character And the guy that played L even though he looks nothing like the character he did a pretty good job
I've got a fun Death Note anecdote from work. So I was stacking shelves at the library and I saw these two little girls, their ages most likely barely in the two-digit range, and they were reading Death Note, which is great. So I moved about to a spot where I could listen in on their conversation, and what did I hear? They were arguing over the rules and how to use them, they had the volumes open at those pages displaying the rules and everything. Death Note got these two kids to really use their brains. I think that's wonderful. And yes, Ohba is a pen name. Obata is a famous artist but the writer is a bit of a mystery man. Once again repeating the recommendation of Bakuman from the same creative team, it'll teach you a great deal about manga. Oh and if you enjoyed that game of tennis, you should know that that's what sports manga are like.
This is just a recommendation and is something you should read once you read a lot more manga but there’s a manga called Bakuman by the same creators of Death Note and it really goes into the manga industry and manga as a whole. Just something cool to read if you ever want to know about manga
Imo there are better things he could decide to read Bakuman is pretty standard stuff (I enjoyed it but it's certainly not the best the manga medium has to offer). Should Mike want to know more about the manga industry it's probably better to do research on it.
This is just a recommendation, but if you ever want to continue the manga journey: Monster is a great psychological thriller manga and anime. This one is a novel/anime, but the Legend of the Galactic Heroes is such a great space opera (it deals with politics, philosophies etc). Liar game is a great manga for its game theory. (Not as good as the other two, but I think it has its own charm)
Don’t make the mistake of reading “smart” manga. There are always shallow people who gravitate towards them, the same type of people who have framed degrees in their office. Manga is a visual medium best suited for adventure stories that allow the widest exercise of the imagination. And that is why the best manga is one piece, not drek like death note or monster.
The reason why he did many heart attacks is so people knew that someone was behind it. If deaths were different it would just be...normal. But when everyone is dying the same way, it shows someone is behind it
Misa is a character that is meant to be divisive in my opinion, because she is not smart like L or Light but she is just as sociopathic as Light with a obsession for Kiria aka Light which make her dangerous since she can just kill anyone. Also the arc with the corporate business has a really big impact for the story.
for reference: Death Note is classified as a shounen (young boys, about 10-14, same as naruto, bleach, one piece and fairy tail). Berserk is a seinnen (targeted at an older audience, 16 and up)
Yeah, Shounen also Attack On Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist, Hunter X Hunter, Devilman, Chainsaw Man, Fist of the North Star, JoJo (Some Parts), Claymore, Fire Punch
Super late to this video, and not sure if anyone has told you this yet: But regarding the "charcoal" drawing at the start. When manga is first published in magazines, they sometimes has color pages (it is on a rotation which series gets color pages every issue, and its not all the chapter, just like 2 pages or so). So the charcoal is probably just a grayscaled version of those color pages that is used for when the chapters get put into a volume (some publisher keeps the color pages, but most cheap out and just goes with a grayscaled version of it).
I get the wanting Light to not get caught, but also not wanting L to lose. It feels like the author deliberately wrote it in such a way as to put the reader in Ryuk's seat. You just want to sit back and watch it unfold, but not too quickly otherwise it wouldn't be amusing.
I read these suuuuuuch a long time ago. The spoilers are unlocking some series memories for me. It's nice to have a refresher and remember why I loved them so much.
That's it. I'm joining your Discord! Also, I completely agree on Death Note being the best choice for a beginner. It was my first manga and it totally hook the entire genre + anime up for me. Thank your video! Always a joy to listen to your reviews
About 27:20 , its actually said that worlds top chess players burn around 350-500 kcal per game. So if we compare that to L whos whole life is 1 big game of chess, I think its possible to eat that much and not get fat.
Found you by a Berserk recommendation, because I have been watching a lot of Berserk related content. I'm glad I did. I've watched your "Black Swordsman" arc and half of conviction arc one review. I'm currently reading Berserk for the first time myself, which is also my first ever manga. I'm still reading through "Conviction Arc", so hence I watched only half of your video of it. Just wanted to say I'm glad I found your channel. I enjoy the way you express your thoughts and feeling towards what you've read. Looking forward to what you think of Death Note. I haven't read it myself, but watched it and think it's absolutely brilliant, so I hope you continue reading it and enjoy the experience.
I'm in the same boat as you. I'm currently reading Berserk, my first Manga, and nearing end of the Conviction Arc. It's incredible - I feel ALL the feelings reading Berserk! I recently read my first Junji Ito, too, (Uzumaki) which I recommend if you like horror. Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, the Vinland Saga and Demon Slayer also on my tbr list👍
I'm not very experienced with manga or anime, but I watched all the anime seasons of Deathnote a few years ago, and it remains one of my favorite series! I love what you said about the Shinigami and the dynamic between Light and L. Excellent play on morality, and I did like the way new Deathnote rules unfolded over time. Hope you enjoy the rest of the manga!
As usual, great video! Ive only watched the anime. But the whole apple thing, i dont know if theres something to it or if its just an apple. But in my eyes i see it as symbolising like the forbidden fruit? Knowledge and i guess how some Knowledge can corrupt? Those type themes.
For me the first half of Death Note is just one of the best manga ever made. It was something very original to me when I first read it in 2006. Can't wait to see Mike reaction for the second half. It's very very decisive with the fans.
If you are ever interested in what the manga world is like and what it takes to make one. The author and artist of this series called Bakuman which gives a realistic look on how manga is made in Japan and its great!
Good review, the beginning of Death Note is definitely the strongest part in my opinion. The game of chess between Light and L is really enjoyable. Curious for your thoughts on what comes next..
Great review! If you ever do decide to watch an anime adaption of the manga you’re reading Deathnote is a great place to start. The music and animation really do add something special. The dub is also fairly good as well. I’d recommend the Blu-ray or Omega versions, they have been remastered visually up from the original 360p airing. Never watch anything past the 1998 anime adaption of berserk though. Goes to the end of golden age.
Most people in the Manga/Anime community usually mention both Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata when they talk about series they worked on together but I don't know if its just out of habit and hearing so many other people say it too. But I think Takeshi Obata definitely should be in the title of the video xD, I'm pretty sure he is the more recognized of the two mangaka. Check out his(Takeshi Obata) version of All You Need is Kill, its great and its one you're probably already familiar with since Tom Cruise made a movie out of it called Edge of Tomorrow
I highly recommend Bakuman, its the same authors as Death Note and shows so much into the process of making manga and all the ups and downs along the way.
I think you'll like black butler if you are into shinigami. The basic idea is a noble boy in Victorian England makes a deal with a demon who becomes his butler. There are shinigami reoccurring characters. They aren't the same as in Death Note, so it will give you a different perspective. It's also a giant mystery with smaller mysteries that build on each other.
deth note is great but what's hert death note's ending is the fact that the author wanted to end the series at a specific point but the magazine wanted to prolong the ending because they wanted to make a profit out of the series. Edit: Takeshi Obata the illustrator uses his name but the arthur uses the pen name Tsugumi Ohba
I feel the same way about some of the stereotypes that can appear in manga, like the antics and goofy personalities, but I have noticed that those types of things don’t usually appear in seinen manga (seinen means it’s aimed at a demographic of 18 and up), so I think you should mostly be safe since seinen make up most of your 10 manga list. With it being shonen (aimed at males 13-20) It does happen sometimes in fullmetal alchemist, but it’s really toned down and happens a lot less then in most. BTW you got me to start reading Dune. I’m really enjoying it so far.
I'm interested to see what you think of the ending. I won't spoil anything and will be as vague as possible, but there is a point in the story towards the end where the quality noticeably drops. It's not bad or anything, but compared to the rest, it isn't as good. I think I read somewhere that they were approaching a point where the author originally intended it to end, but the editorial staff at weekly shounen jump, the magazine the chapters were published in, made them extend it a bit longer, so the ending kinda drags a bit.
If you wanna see some absolutely INCREDIBLE artwork from a manga creator who doesn’t get enough love and exposure, check out Innocent Rouge by Sakamoto Shinichi. It’s a great retelling of the French Revolution. The art is amazing. I still like Miura’s work the most of course. Haha Also, Sakamoto is in the middle of retelling Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It’s called #DRCL Midnight Children. The artwork is even more godly than his previous works. Love your channel and reviews. Glad you’re liking manga. So many people refuse to give the medium a try, especially if they’re used to western novels. ✌🏻
Not a fan of Death Note myself. The premise itself is great...but after that initial setup it's all downhill from there IMO. That said I'd like to echo others in suggesting Monster. Or really, any of Naoki Urasawa's work -- 20th Century Boys, Pluto, etc. Can't really go wrong. Though Monster is the most grounded and realistic of his work, so I'd start there. (Also One Piece :P)
Edit: Saw you mention him in the introduction; still worth listing him in the title of the video, respectfully. The pseudonym to which you are referring might be a Bakuman thing, and Mangaka can be very private individuals. So, as someone doing a read-through of Bakuman on my website for fun, I feel it's important to mention that Death Note is a writer/artist combo and the artist is Takeshi Obata. While Ohba writes and storyboards the series, Obata's influence cannot be understated. He's often responsible for the visual storytelling, the character design, and changing Ohba's panel layouts to be more visually striking. Bakuman has storyboard comparisons, and the work he puts in is frankly as important as the actual story being told. All that is to say: he's worth mentioning as Co-author of Death Note because his contributions are of equal importance to the character of the series. He's also mentioned as Top-Line creator for the series in general, as he and Ohba are a team. Other than that, glad you're enjoying and exploring manga more. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Naoki Urasawa and the back half of this series.
@@mikesbookreviews This is my bad. Yer good, my man. I didn't see his name in the title of the video, which I mentioned in an edit. That was just me being shortsighted. On a sidenote: the volumes of manga aren't actually charcoal, those were originally released as color pages using copic marker that were converted into black and white for the volume releases. You can probably look up the original color versions of those beautiful spreads online. They look great b&w and even more amazing in color. Apologies for the confusion again, keep reading.
@@mikesbookreviews I think he was referring to Obata’s influence on the story itself rather than just his role as illustrator. It is true, though most of the “macro” storytelling, like the overall plot and character development didn’t have much Obata influence, things like characterization in a scene, or building up tension were all him.
Excellent review. I read that closer to its release date but it was also an early foray into manga for me. I remember enjoying less the second half past volume 7, but it remains a very classic and somewhat deliciously perverse series with a lot of moral ambiguity. On the vigilante sociopath theme, I think it was much more interesting than something like Dexter. Don’t worry too much about finding more manga to enjoy after picking two of the best in their genre. First, the medium is almost infinitely diverse, (though the offering in western language translation limits that still) and your own fairly wide tastes and open mindedness in terms of genres means you’ll find a lot titles, some off the beaten path. There’s notably a series that’s a lose transposition of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment that could grab your interest. There are some good coming of age stories as well.
So the big question, would you use the note? Personally I'm a yes hopefully without the pride aspect which seems to be Lights Achilles heel. Biggest problem is what would be the stopping point?
The stereotype you mention appears more in shounen anime which basicaly is what we call YA. Berserk, deathnote, vagabond and many others are seinen, which are aimed to audience of the age of 20-40. So generally if you hang around the seinen genre you wont have to deal with that stereotype. There are obviously some shounen that dont fall in that stereotype for example fire punch, hell's paradise, fullmetal alchemist (for the most part), chainsaw man etc.
I need to reread this baby. It's so good. Btw, I might be wrong but I think I remember Rem is female. I wonder if we'll get a 20th Anni edition in 2023 😍 Yeah Misa is the worst. More fault of the author/creator than the character I think. She had potential. I think most people dislike her because she had so much pontential but the creator... Spoiler section: Oh no, yeah, the first man was defo trying to ass*ult that woman. Question that often comes up in the fandom: where do you think the Shinigami come from?
You're not wrong, Rem is female. I'm in the camp of I don't need the origin of the shinigami explained or any magic system in fiction. I'm fine with having it existing whilst also laying out some rules, otherwise we get midichlorian!
I think a manga series you would enjoy is JoJos, the art style i feel like is right up your alley, and the same with the story. And I know you have been pitched one piece so many times, but my one simple pitch for it is that the series houses the best world-building and character-building I have read in all of the manga in the long-form shonen type of writing. everything is introduced with a purpose, and each character plays a role in the big picture of one piece, one way or another.
No, none of those two are recomendable for newbies, specially jojo's. Jojo's is unique but I'd dare my nose he'll say it's too repetitive and aleatory. Maybe one piece can do, but he needs to overcome his prejudice towards the art style
Plz upload another video once you finished the series. Also the Live action movie sucks but the anime in English or Japanese is AMAZING. I think it's the only anime I've watched multiple times
Death Note is very much a product of its time and genre. Long form episodic storytelling on such a tight schedule is not easy to pull off, and there are a number of different ways authors and artists have learned to buy themselves some breathing room. Slowing down the pace for filler arcs, introducing new characters and given them time to integrate into the story, reusing stock dialogue and art, all of these are useful, but they come with their drawbacks. In the olden days, it wasn't uncommon for a popular weekly show coming off an amazing arc to come up with some complete nonsense filler just to let the author get some lead time in the "official" storyline. Most diehard anime and manga fans just sort of roll with it, or learn which parts they can afford to skip, but it can be extremely offputting to someone newer to the scene. There's nothing wrong with being annoyed by it, either. It's legitimate criticism. For Death Note in particular, it also came at a time when anime and manga was undergoing a fairly drastic shift in tone and content. Authors began to experiment, and even more mainstream shows got really freaking weird. You still had your genre staples like giant robots and shonen battle series, but stuff like Death Note didn't fit neatly into any one category. That didn't always work out in the audience's favor, but it was hard to be bored.
@@LeonC0704 basically you're supposed to understand her importance to the narrative, but she isn't a very enjoyable or intriguing character in and of herself. Especially to the level of Light and L.
@@OddJobs-kt5jz yes, but I think it is intentional. She shows so much… emptiness. I still remember the scene on the anime where she is sitting and there is a bird in a cage
Manga is divided based on the magazines and the demographic, Shonen magazine cater for male teens between the ages of 12 to 18, shoujo magazines cater for female teens between the ages of 12 to 18, seinen cater for men, josei for women and Kodomomuke for kids. they have a very larg amount of genres more than the one that exists in the West, also they provide different type of entertainment for different tastes for example Shonen magazine have IPS that are superhero based and some are more Slice of Life or romance based ext... when it comes to the sense of humor in Japan they actually prefer animated slapstick humor I know it's probably going to bother you but it's a cultural thing it exists even in life action but the same amount of cheese does exist in American cartoons so I have no idea why you think it's super hard to deal with :> and they do tend to make female characters more cute like and sometimes even male characters because they want the characters to be endearing. Edit: glad to see you enjoy manga :D
I don't like those things in American cartoons, either. So it isn't an East vs West thing for me. I'm just a 43 year old man. Those things take me out of it.
Death Note does get a liiiiitle repetitive. I still really liked the thing as a whole but the back and forth did start to blur for me. Like you said, it’s fast enough that it never got outright stale but it did start to feel the same
Can’t wait for you to read Vinland saga, that series is brilliant ! As for deathnote , I love it untill the ‘thing’ happens and then the plot becomes abit lacklustre and overly complex
I watched the anime and enjoyed it a lot, so the manga is probably great. I haven't watched a lot of anime and I still prefered both anime versions of Fullmetal Alchemist over Deathnote. I hopr you get to the manga of Fullmetal soon
I would love for him to read steel ball run but I don't think JoJo would be up his alley even though steel ball run is the 2 highest rated manga on MAL right after berserk at number 1.
I've watched so many reviews of things I haven't read just for the excerpt section. You always do a great job with selection and delivery of the lines
Deathnote is a classic man. Just stay away from the Netflix adaptation. It's abysmal.
The live action needs to be destroyed with fire. It's a shame a few good actors couldn't salvage that steamy turd.
I fear no man but that thing, it scares me.
In fairness Willem Dafoe was perfectly cast he even looks like the character
And the guy that played L even though he looks nothing like the character he did a pretty good job

DN is one of my favourite manga series. Looking forward to part 2 and your thoughts on it
Don't you disrepect my girl Nina like that
the corporation part is..... crucial. It feels slower (in the anime) but there is a reason
Good review 🙂
If you wanna see some absolutely INCREDIBLE artwork from a manga creator who doesn’t get enough love and exposure, check out Innocent Rouge by Sakamoto Shinichi. It’s a great retelling of the French Revolution. The art is amazing. I still like Miura’s work the most of course. Haha
Also, Sakamoto is in the middle of retelling Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It’s called #DRCL Midnight Children. The artwork is even more godly than his previous works. Love your channel and reviews. Glad you’re liking manga. So many people refuse to give the medium a try, especially if they’re used to western novels. ✌🏻
I wish they had a subscription service for manga. DC infinite and marvel unlimited are so clutch.
There is Viz it has a subscription model
Not a fan of Death Note myself. The premise itself is great...but after that initial setup it's all downhill from there IMO.
That said I'd like to echo others in suggesting Monster. Or really, any of Naoki Urasawa's work -- 20th Century Boys, Pluto, etc. Can't really go wrong. Though Monster is the most grounded and realistic of his work, so I'd start there.
(Also One Piece :P)
Check out his video on the next 10 manga he'll be reading. He mentions all of those in there
Death Note part 1 is a true masterpice. It's a near perfect manga.
My man!
Oh you have no idea what's about to come volume 7!!!! (If u haven't already) For me volume 7 is the best one. Enjoy reading it.
I do mention him? I just said the name wrong. I even talked about how great the art was for 4 minutes.
Is interested in death note since seeing Ryuk. Wearing Black Label shirt. Yeah I can see it.
Death note was actually written by Ashirogi muto
Biggest problem is what would be the stopping point?
if you like the manga, the animation is AMAZING
The stereotype you mention appears more in shounen anime which basicaly is what we call YA. Berserk, deathnote, vagabond and many others are seinen, which are aimed to audience of the age of 20-40. So generally if you hang around the seinen genre you wont have to deal with that stereotype. There are obviously some shounen that dont fall in that stereotype for example fire punch, hell's paradise, fullmetal alchemist (for the most part), chainsaw man etc.
I need to reread this baby. It's so good.
Btw, I might be wrong but I think I remember Rem is female.
I wonder if we'll get a 20th Anni edition in 2023 😍
Yeah Misa is the worst. More fault of the author/creator than the character I think. She had potential. I think most people dislike her because she had so much pontential but the creator...
Spoiler section:
Oh no, yeah, the first man was defo trying to ass*ult that woman.
Only seen the anime and it’s great! I watched the Berserk movies on Netflix and the animation is great!
JoJos is very hard to get into for people new to manga/anime.
While probably the most creative manga out there it's too random/bizarre for noobs like him
No, none of those two are recomendable for newbies, specially jojo's. Jojo's is unique but I'd dare my nose he'll say it's too repetitive and aleatory. Maybe one piece can do, but he needs to overcome his prejudice towards the art style
As much as I would love to see him have brain aneurysm reading JOJOs, I don't think he will like it, especially the starting bit.
Folks who have watched this channel for 2+ years and know my likes and dislikes have said JoJo would not be something I enjoy.
You aren't really supposed to "like" Misa
aren't you? I loved her lol. I wonder how he will feel about certain two upcoming characters
@@LeonC0704 she definitely isn't without value, I'll give you that.
A quick Google search says the apple has to do with the forbidden fruit. A symbol of temptation and sin just like the death note itself.
I will recommend manga Monster by Naoki Urasawa one best manga suspense and mystery.
I'm not young either and I also don't like it most of the time but it dose give me time to british between events i guss
Death Note does get a liiiiitle repetitive. I still really liked the thing as a whole but the back and forth did start to blur for me. Like you said, it’s fast enough that it never got outright stale but it did start to feel the same
No it's pretty much she just likes apples there's nothing deeper to it
Try uzumaki next
You are few chapters away from a plot twist
What software do you use to make the intros. They are pretty great
Filmora
Can’t wait for you to read Vinland saga, that series is brilliant ! As for deathnote , I love it untill the ‘thing’ happens and then the plot becomes abit lacklustre and overly complex
I watched the anime and enjoyed it a lot, so the manga is probably great. I haven't watched a lot of anime and I still prefered both anime versions of Fullmetal Alchemist over Deathnote. I hopr you get to the manga of Fullmetal soon
Fun video. But I wish people would stop apologizing for their own opinions. Babies cry whether you. Cuddle them or not.
You definitely need to read Vagabond, its on Berserk level, both with the art and the story
Incorrect. There are plenty of manga better than berserk, however: one piece, naruto, JoJo, claymore, & fullmetal alchemist to name a few.
@@reginaldforthright805 LMAO
Just checked the anime.
I would love for him to read steel ball run but I don't think JoJo would be up his alley even though steel ball run is the 2 highest rated manga on MAL right after berserk at number 1.
hahahahaha true! This show made me like apples so much more... That and... chocolate.............
