No, I don't think he would be popular, that's just impossible. In anime ofc he is cute but in real life, imagine some VERY thin man with HUGE eye bags (not this cute makeup in drama), almost always walks barefoot and still stooped back. Plus, his communication style. I have nothing against L, I also really like him as an anime character, but if he was in your school, you would definitely not think what a mysterious handsome guy. You'd think it was a homeless dude off the street.
He also almost always sits at home, and I don't think he smells good and I don’t think that he will be very charming and in general he will at least smile.

In the manga/anime, you get the vibe that Light is just using L for his benefit, and doesn’t really have any feeling towards him, and the same with L towards Light. But I feel like the way that they portrayed their characters in this drama it really made it seem like that they really did love each other. And it makes it so much sadder. Oof.

You know, if I didn't know the context behind everything in these clips, I would have thought Death Note was about Light being possessed or manipulated by the demon Ryuk after opening the Death Note, and his boyfriend L is super worried about him. L sends someone to watch him but goes missing. Then, L starts to spy on him to figure out what’s wrong. When even that is proving to be useless, he insists on staying by his love’s side 24/7 to ensure nothing is wrong. Unfortunately, as Ryuk overtakes Light, he starts to become more and more violent, and L is the poor recipient. Also, Light cheats on L multiple times with Misa before he finally catches them. The stress of everything becomes too much for L and dies of a heart attack. Then, Near and Mellow, who were siblings of L, want revenge and try to kill Light. Light, who at this point is fully possessed by Ryuk, has no shred of humanity left and starts a cult. He initiates Mikami by giving him the Death Note. This short lived cult ends when Near, Mellow, and the police corner Light in the warehouse and gun him down.

You know, if I didn't know the context behind everything in these clips, I would have thought Death Note was about Light being possessed or manipulated by the demon Ryuk after opening the Death Note, and his boyfriend L is super worried about him. L sends someone to watch him but goes missing. Then, L starts to spy on him to figure out what’s wrong. When even that is proving to be useless, he insists on staying by his love’s side 24/7 to ensure nothing is wrong. Unfortunately, as Ryuk overtakes Light, he starts to become more and more violent, and L is the poor recipient. Also, Light cheats on L multiple times with Misa before he finally catches them. The stress of everything becomes too much for L and dies of a heart attack. Then, Near and Mellow, who were siblings of L, want revenge and try to kill Light. Light, who at this point is fully possessed by Ryuk, has no shred of humanity left and starts a cult. He initiates Mikami by giving him the Death Note. This short lived cult ends when Near, Mellow, and the police corner Light in the warehouse and gun him down.
