Berserk isn’t just top tier comics or manga, it is literally top tier fiction. The art, the dialogue, the complex interweiving story, brilliantly complex characters, and amazing themes of finding your dream and the will to live even though things are hard. Berserk is the peak of all fiction, and is up there, if not above, things like First Law and A Song of Ice and Fire.

Everything about the Guts and Caska romance is great to me, especially the few panels just before they kiss where they have a realistic awkward interaction. Even the bad part was well done, because it shows Guts having a real moment of weakness where he wants to connect sexually with Caska, but his trauma from being raped by Donovan causes him to break down, and Caska can see how much it hurt him and she understands and just goes in and hugs him, it's so beautiful.

Miura was a huge fan of romance anime and manga, the type which “traditionally” (speaking very generally here) was aimed at teenage girls, especially Rose of Versailles. Miura’s influences are pretty obvious, but the way he blends them makes the end result far superior than the sum of its parts. He was a true master

When you look at the scene where Guts picks up griffith and holds him it always looks like both are reaching for each other to hold the other...but when you pick more attention to what actually happened...what griffiths condition is and how he looks at guts, you realize...that he wanted to choke him...not hug him. his eyes were full oft hate and guts did not realize this.

I humbly consider this NOT amazing. I'm only beginning the Conviction arc so obviously I don't want to judge the whole manga too much, but I think something like Attack on Titan is superior to Berserk in this aspect, since the mangaka of AoT planned out a lot of similar things from the very start, while as you've just said in the case of Berserk it's either a good opportunity to connect things or just mere luck. Still everyone who knows both series say that Berserk is "better". Can someone explain this to me?

@@szilveszterforgo8776 Once you've read the entire manga you will see why people say its the best of the best. Aot is good but what really sells berserk for me is the depth of the characters and the world as well as how they develop over the course of the story in a way which no other mangaka really does as well as berserk. Miura did actually have large amounts of the story planned out from the start, just a few things weren't fully fleshed out, much like AOT.

I mean, sure, Isayama's planning for AoT is amazing (despite the ending), and Reiner is a GREAT character, but nothing really can compare to what Miura does in Berserk regarding worldbuilding and character development, imo. Berserk is my favorite story of all time. Golden Age is a masterpiece, but so is Conviction and the one after that and the rest are VERY close.
Just one important thing. Miura is NOT a writer that sticks to a particular style, he evolves and does so better than any writer I have ever read. Conviction is just as much a masterpiece as Golden Age, but it is different. That is the reason why many people have this feeling Berserk falls off after golden age, because it develops and Berserk is NOT your typical tropy hero story fantasy.
Regarding the anime: the 90s anime is good, the movies are passable and the 2016/2017 anime should not be touched! Not only is the new anime shit CGI, but there were many very bad choices made when it comes to direction and adaptation decisions. It will ruin the manga experience for you if you watch the anime first before the manga.

*Berserk* is the most amazing story that I’ve ever read, and I’m not even halfway through it (currently at vol 15), the story is beyond amazing. You read the Manga & it’ll have a massive fight scene with extreme violence for 40 pages with very little dialogue, then you’ll have a few pages of the most deep, philosophical dialogue that you’ve ever read.
The art gets better & better as the Manga progresses, he just gets much better as the story continues, if you look at the first few chapters & then skip to volume 15 you’ll see a big change in the art, it’s just amazing. And the best part about this are the deluxe editions, they’re absolutely beautiful, they just make the art look so much better, and my god are the books beautiful, the cover looks like read leather & they look so cool with the red lettering & the brand of sacrifice on each book.
I bought all 7 from *Amazon* and 3 got lost in the post, then because I was waiting so long for them to arrive I was then unable to get the 2nd & 3rd editions, they were sold out. I had to buy & read them digitally them digitally, and they’re still sold out.
But yea I continued to try convince myself that Griffith wasn’t going to transform into Femto, the Eclipse was just heartbreaking, especially the loss of Judeau who I loved, and poor Pippin too. But yea the Eclipse was amazing, I knew it was coming, and was told it was amazing, but even then I still wasn’t prepared for the Eclipse.
But this is the story that I’ve waited my entire life to read, I just wish I got into it sooner, but the one thing that has utterly destroyed me is the death of Maura now means the story is unfinished, which is totally devastating.

The '97 anime that adapts the Golden Age (and 1 episode for Black Swordsman) is an absolute must-watch. There are some relatively minor deviations from the source material, but the experience is augmented so much by the soundtrack (done by Susumu Hirasawa, who did a lot of the Satoshi Kon soundtracks) and the color.

I was very selective with my song selection, mostly focusing on Susumu Hirasawa songs and exclusive Berserk OST’s from games and anime.
Hearing these songs while reading the manga enhances the experience, however, don’t feel like you always need to have a song playing in the background. Some songs are loops and some are not. Feel free to give me feedback if you prefer long looped songs versus shorter ones as well as the order of the song selection.
If you want to loop a song and are playing it on the computer, right click the video and click “loop”.
I want to ensure that you see this, so I’ll post this on every Berserk video that you’ve made. Thanks again for the content, I look forward to your future videos. - Danel

All of Griffiths talk of what a true friend means to him, is something he's telling himself as a way to justify his actions and how he treats people he cares about. Thinking of his friends as tools, of justifying the psychologically horrible things he's put himself through for his own ambition, was all denial. He might rationally try and justify these things but then stuff happens to him, like:
He breaks down in front of Casca, after convincing himself it was necessary to be violated by that old man.
After Guts leaves him, he's heartbroken.
He literally says Guts shined brighter than his dream, when he was in the dungeon.
Once they break him out, all he's doing is looking ominously (jealously) at how Guts and Casca are interacting.
The scene during the eclipse, where he's watching his younger self, is literally him allowing himself to slip back into ultimate denial.

The eclipse is where Miura reached his cenit as a mangaka, but there are still many awesome scenes to look forward to. The only Berserk adaptation I would recommend is the 90s anime. The animation was not to good, but it captured the story beautifully and the soundtrack has some great tracks. Such as Gutts scene. I´ve kept myself away from the other versions due to the precense of cgi. But I've only heard terrible things about the 2016 version.

What I enjoy about Guts' overpowered nature is that it makes sense to me because of how he grew up. To live in the conditions he lived and fight through all the obstacles he went through is something incredible. The chances that any other human can push through those conditions is so astronomically low that only an overpowered and naturally gifted person could accomplish. Also Guts is so unbelievably strong yet from what we see of Griffith in the Black Swordsman Arc, Griffith dwarfs Guts. It emphasizes how big of a threat and how dominating Griffith's presence is in the story.
