Thanks a lot for this tutorial. Thanks to this I could rescue my Sony PRS-T2N. Just two suggestions for anyone going to do this. Before removing the screen take a sharp knife and mark each of the four corners into the metal to make aligning the new screen easier. Also, removing the old screen I used a paint/heat gun at 600 celcius. I had the front plastic part off the screen and the glass would just shatter in large chunks of the heat and I could just slide the shards off. Using a small filling knife and the heat gun followed by acetone/ old style nail cleaner I got the metal chassis clean in a about 15 minutes.
I did this over several days because my patience with the glass removal was wearing very thin!! I finally sat down and finished it tonight. Put the whole thing back together and pressed the on button.... Nothing happened for a few minutes. Plugged it in to charge, nothing. After all that effort I was about to throw the damn thing against the wall. Then suddenly - The glorious spinning arrows appeared, it was ALIVE!! So happy I didn't have to completely lose the plot haha. Thanks for the tutorial!! Very helpful :)
Thank you!!! I have successfully replaced the screen. This video was extremely helpful. I admit that I wouldn't have even tried if I hadn't watched this video first. I have a little tip. My biggest fear was aligning the screen. After some thought I came up with this idea. Before removing the protective layer from the double adhesive tape, I first aligned the screen with the black frame and taped the screen to the frame with pieces of paper adhesive tape. Then I lifted it together, removed the top protective layer from the tape, and then placed the screen and the frame on the tape. It was then easy to remove the paper adhesive tape and the screen was perfectly aligned. Another big big big thanks, now i have my beautiful PRS T1 back.
Thank you for that demo, screen now replaced. I got the old screen off using a hot air gun till the glue gave up, made removal easier. Got the residue off with clutch and brake cleaner. Again thank you.
A hot air gun I used as well (not a hair dryer, a really hot one) - it worked really good with a small scraper - and easy to remove the the old display without a big effort.
Got it fixed, even without a great helper like you have. A very good test in patience and I also would not do this for somenody else. To much risk in damaging the reader. Thanks.
This video has enabled me to take the plunge and replace the screens in two broken PRS-T2s. I have a few observations to make on the process of getting the old screen out. Heat guns are definitely the way to go. I did not start out with a heat gun the first time and ended up prying the screen off in lots of tiny bits. Second time went straight to the heat gun. First thing that will happen is the plastic cover will bubble and come loose, just peel it away. Then use the heat on the glass, as it heats it will turn silvery and you can start to get a thin bladed screwdriver under the glass. It will still crack and come off in pieces but they are quite big pieces. Once all the glass is off it is time to remove the old glue. I find that a squirt of WD40 and a sharp scraping tool do a good job of getting most of the glue off. Getting all the glue off would be hard and I think unnecessary. For both of my readers I got the metal tray so it was still slightly tacky, like the glue on a post-it note. This is enough to hold the screen lightly in place so if you do put it down slightly wonky it is easy to lift and try again. I bought double sided tape especially for this but it is still sealed. I hope this never becomes necessary but if I ever have to replace either screen again I know that next time I will not be frying my fingers or dodging bits of glass. I got both of my replacement screens from the eBay trader on the link below, www.ebay.co.uk/usr/1zha.xy6xxy?_trksid=p2047675.l2559 Takes a little while to make it over from China but they are both working well.
Thanks for the tip about the ribbon cable connectors. I couldn't get them to release but the cable was quite loosely held so wasn't worried about damaging the cable. Getting the old screen out is by far the most difficult part. It appears to be stuck on with a very strong double sided tape. In both instances it took me hours to get it off. Heating makes it a little easier but not much. It is basically a case of safety glasses, gloves and an old chisel and start scraping the old screen off, not for the faint hearted. Replacing the motherboard in a reader with a good screen is a much better way to go. It would appear that the screens in these readers are never meant to come out, a bit of a design flaw considering how delicate they are.
Thanks for this video. I replaced my PRST1 screen and it was a lot easier to remove than yours was. I managed by sliding a knife under the glass. Obviously, and fortunately, a less adhesive glue had been used.
In one place you tugged a flat ribbon connector out of the main circuit board. The place it fastens in to has a flip up clip. The back portion of the clip, away from the ribbon cable flips up to release the cable, then press back down to reassemble after inserting the cable. I tried both very hot water, immersing the whole midboard and screen, and then a hair dryer getting it too hot to handle and still didn't get the screen adhesive to loosen. The little end board has adhesive only under the headphone jack. Prying under the jack seems to be the safest place to pry it loose. I just bought one with a good screen that doesn't work and will swap the motherboard into the replacement rather than trying to pry the old screen loose.
Angelo Gonzalvez Vidale Here is a link to the actual screen that I used ;www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231043629494?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Hello, nice tutorial! I'm trying to replace my screen of my prs -t2, but when i plug it in without it being completely installed ( like you do in the beginning right after you get the skin of) it seems to work fine, but the touchscreen doesn't work. I bought the screen with aliexpress and it should be a touchscreen. Is there something i could be missing why the touchscreen isn't working (yet)? My dad thinks it's could need a hard reset to install the touchscreen function...
Hi Dries. The screen is not actually a touch screen like a phone. It works with infra red beams just above the screen that detect where you are touching the screen. This means that it won't work as a touch screen until it is fully fitted into the unit. So looks like you are on the right path, just keep going and you should have a fully functioning reader again. Good luck.
Multiple times there is a shot beep in you video. Every time I heard it I thought it was the low battery sound of my smoke detector and wanted to replace its battery. Only later I found out it was just in the video :)
Be careful when attempting to remove the protective layer (39:30). My new screen appearantly did not have such a easy-to-peel-off layer. Instead it DID have a thick transparant protective sheet that looked like the one in the video, BUT it is part of the actual screen! When i did peel it off I actually destroyed the screen....
please, could you inform me, the web or place where you bought the new screen and how much did you pay fot it? I´m not looking for the screen as, up to know, my screen it´s still in good order but I´m afraid that my ebook need to be repaired as the lower buttons are not responding accordingly, so I´ll need to but them. I´m trying to find the plate with those buttoms but unfortunately I cannot find it. I have thought tha probably I can find it in same place where you bought the screen. I´ll appreciate you help. thanks
i have just seen your video about sony ebook repair and I have to tell you as follows: 1. very interesting as I was looking how to disassemble. 2. unfortunately it's too long in my opinion; 55 mins. 3. too much dark shadows. some of the images are not clear enough. I recommend you, for future projects, more lamps to avoid it. anyway, congratulations.
Thanks for the comment Diego. It is very long, huge infact, but when I made it I thought people may be able to work along with me. I could have cut a lot out but wanted the slow pace. The camera used for this video was quite old so not nearly as good quality as the camera equipment now. That is why it looks so dark, also didn't have proper lighting. Most RUclips videos are excellent quality now and getting better every year. Glad you enjoyed it and I hope it helped. Good luck fixing your reader.
+igean Hi. I used some double sided tape like this: www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-198134-Fixman-Double-Sided-Tape/dp/B00F80K5OS/ref=sr_1_5?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1461010592&sr=1-5&keywords=double+sided+tape Not the same as I used but is similar - its really strong. You may get away with a lighter tape - as long as the screen is held securely it should be fine. Good luck!
Sławomir Walczak I used a strong tape - think its used under carpet seams, it was the only tape I had at the time. But any should be good as long as its sticky. it is really just to stop any movement of the screen.
Dear Ecologise, I had a specialist look at the T2 of my son (pushed the screen a bit to hard by accident ending up with severy lines on the screen) and he tried to replace the screen but found out it that with a new screen it did not clear the content of the previous page well enough: traces of the previous page remained visible (in white). He said is was due to a motherboard~screen incompatibility. Does that sound familiair? Should I try my self again e.g. with this screen: gsmserver.com/item/spare-parts-for-e-readers/display-ed060sce-for-sony-prs-t1-6/ which is supposed to be for the T2? Thanks.
I think no need to buy a new screen if the new purshased screen works. I think you bought ED060SCE(LF) screen for prs T1 T2. You need to recalibrate your screen manually. Each batch of screens has its own voltage compensation VCON residual charge, ranging from -1.00 to -2.5V. The required value of this voltage is indicated on the screen loop on a separate tag (see the upper photo). If after installing a new display after turning the screen does not clear completely and there is still an increased amount of "debris" you need to adjust the voltage VCON. In some models of electronic books for its adjustment there is a trimmer on the device board, in other models it is done programmatically with the help of special utilities. If the voltage VCON on the tag of the new screen differs from the value on the old screen by less than 0.3 volts, then most likely no adjustment is required.
