This is a GREAT review, and proof that just because it looks cooler and costs more money doesn't mean it's better. We got our Dyson Pure Hot + Cool because it did everything (heating, cooling and air purification) - and got it at Costco for almost half the price of what it retails for. So it was a more worthwhile (albeit still overpriced) investment. It's come in handy when the office gets a little colder in the winter than the rest of the apartment, and I wouldn't trade it for the world now as it starts getting warmer and my pcs, and what have you warm up the room even quicker. But again, although I'm happy with it overall, it doesn't mean you can't get numerous products that do all these things separately for much cheaper, and just swap them out throughout the year.
"The fifteen dollar Walmart fan had wind speeds of 6.5 miles/h at 3 feet and 5.1 miles/h at 6 feet." Me, an European: Hmmm, interesting, no clue what it means, but suck it Dyson boi."
Ok so a mile is 5,280 feet so 6.5 mph. And 3 feet away is 36 inches. Also, the average indoor temperature is about 73 degrees Fahrenheit so take that into account as well for your indoor speeds.
Let me clarify for you: 6.5 miles/h is about 1.6 fathoms per second 3 feet is equal to 9 hands 5.1 miles/h is roughly 0.87 furlongs per minute and 6 feet is a mere 1.93304e-16 light years Hope that helps.
You know the expense is based on design for the most part right? Whether it is better or not depends on what you want. If you have small kids you may not want a fan they can stick their grubby little fingers into for example.
I always wondered why people praised the Dyson. My friends and I designed a fan last year for our group Engineering project (I'm an aerospace student), and we found out during the development that the Dyson design was quite inefficient
@@MarkSpurrell yes, which is quite close the conventional one. Having a larger air intake reduce the noise and allows a bigger flow. Honestly, if the style is not an issue, the old fans were not bad at all 😅.
I bought a $50 fan that sits on the ground and you just basically swivel it up or down. That thing is so damn powerful and even on the lowest setting it sounds like a industrial fan. It will instantly cool you off but you just just have to endure the jet engine is has for a motor lmao
In an effort to stop people from all commenting the same thing, here's a list of frequently commented things and my response to them: *Comment:* You're comparing an Air Purifier to a fan. That's like comparing an apple to an orange. *Response:* Dyson markets this product directly as the "Dyson Pure Cool Air Purifying Fan." The box is plastered with phrases like "Cools you in the summer," or "powerful air projection," along with all of their purification branding. Consumers that go to the store to buy one of these are looking to buy a product that works well as both an air purifier AND a fan. If the Pure Cool purifies the air just fine but is completely inferior as a fan, then it is a poor design and consumers should simply buy a fan and a purifier separately instead of spending over $600 for an inferior product. Also, I just made a follow up video with the AM07 fan, one without the purifier: ruclips.net/video/OB3v_BvtBUo/видео.html *Comment:* The Dyson will last much longer as it has a brushless motor. *Response:* True. But you could buy several cheap fans and replace them as they wear out and still have saved hundreds of dollars. *Comment:* A 10dB difference is ten times louder in a technical sense, but humans don't perceive that large of a difference. *Response:* Also true. We perceive it to be about twice as loud. But that's still significantly louder than the cheap fan. *Comment:* You should have compared the cheap fan with the AM07 Dyson fan that doesn't have a HEPA filter restricting its air flow. *Response:* This was the only fan at my local store, so it was the one I tested. I think the point I was trying to make about the efficacy of this particular Dyson fan still stands, but if Dyson is confident that one of their other fans is able to beat up some cheap fans in a wind speed test, they can send over one and I'll shoot another video with more tests.
Got one of these from Costco. Returned it after a few months. We hated it. Dyson products are insanely overpriced and usually don't last long. Every dyson product I've had has broken. Had bad air flow out of the box. The filters on our fan clogged up before they were supposed to be replaced and then the air would barely flow at all. The filter replacements are also 80 bucks a pop.
What a great video, I bought a Dyson fan about 6 years ago becuase it was on special. I drove home plugged it, unplugged it, drove back and returned it… finally understanding why it was on special. It was R5000 at half price at the time, and I bought a replacement fan, for R600… I still have my El Cheapo, works like a charm and have never even changed the batteries on the remote…. It is unfortunate because I wanted to need the Dyson :-)
Can confirm these results. I have one and continue to use it because I enjoy the technology it has (really wanted something with env info and voice controls) but when it comes to its core purpose itself, it’s honestly crap as a fan. It’s significantly louder and moves less air than my much cheaper Honeywell stick fan does.
A change of 10 db does indicate 10 times the power, but humans do not perceive that as 10 times the volume. For practical purposes, a change of 1 db is approximately the smallest perceptible change in sound volume. It takes doubling amplifier power to raise speaker volume by about 3 db. To produce an apparent doubling of volume, the amplifier power must be multiplied by 10.
I own one and yes in the beginning i was surprised how much more powerful my old fan was but after using it for a couple months realized that for some odd reason, the air that it blows feels somewhat cooler than the old fan and the fact that you have such a large range of speeds, it makes it so nice to have nice cool air blow at you so quietly and still keep you pretty damn cool. Older fans would just feel exactly the same regardless of which speed u used. So for me its amazing and i love it. Not to mention all the features and wireless control and air filtration
Great Video. But to be honest, I don't think windspeed is the way to compare fans - I'm not trying to install a windturbine in my living room. More interesting would be the air volume these can push.
I had something similar with the dyson V8 vacuum. Looks great! Vacuums well on its highest power setting! ...runs out of battery in 7 minutes! ...costs $600! “Form over function” is really stupid when designing home appliances.
Also on youtube, CBC made a air purifier report and bought most brands, Dyson, germguardian, blue air, levito, Honeywell, and some other brands I can't remember. Turns out blue air won overall. But they also made a cheap air purifier from a box fan and taping it into an air filter. The cheapo-made air purifier outperforms Dyson which was the most expensive brand they tested. Save your money and don't believe the hype with Dyson. CBC interviewed Dyson engineer to explain themselves and it didn't look good for them.
I enjoyed your video. A few things to note. For dB ratings +3dB is technically 2x louder but to our ears +10 dB is perceptively 2x louder. For windspeed you need to seal the fans to the air speed tester. The way you measured the airflow is like using a cup to measure how much water is dumped out of a small bucket vs large bucket. You can easily miss a lot of water if your cup isn't capturing everything. Last thing is Dyson would have a brushless motor vs the Walmarts brushed motor. What that means to the consumer is the brushes wear away over time getting louder and slower on the Walmart fan over time. The Dyson should easily outlast the Walmart fan by 4x so 20 years vs say 5 years. Your conclusions still stand and the Walmart fan is a much better value and quieter. Thank you for sharing.
These are some great notes! I wasn't trying hard to do this scientifically, it was more or less just a fun video to confirm my suspicions about the dyson fan. Glad you liked the video!
Nice analysis. I wonder, did you also measure what air *volume* is moved by each fan vs air *speed*? Do you think there is there any practical difference between volume vs. speed?
not a big FAN of the dyson fan, but the cryptomic is such a good buy for someone living in the San Francisco Bay Area (yearly fires). i just have it plugged in, and cleans the air whenever it detects it. detects the humidity and adapts to it. haven't had any respiratory problem since I bought it. of course, its expensive but hospital bills literally puts people in a debt hole
Dyson products are futuristic conversation pieces, but that's about it. The one thing left out would have been is the cost of operating the Dyson cheaper than the operating a fan and air purifier separately? It definite has the advantage in space. Otherwise, a great review.
One more comparison to make: Plug them into a watt meter, and I'll bet you'll find, that the Dyson "Air Multiplier" will use more power per CFM of air flow. Again, that difference in power will probably be less, than powering up both the conventional fan AND an air purifier. The Dyson might actually be more efficient than running both other less expensive units. Note, that for every watt consumed by ANY electrical appliance, there is ~3.4 BTU's of heat dissipated. The less power your air circulating equipment uses, the less temperature rise in the room!
very interesting comparison. not gonna lie, I was expecting you to favor the Dyson LOL. fun fact, there is actually a sort of cult-following for the real retro/oldschool oscillating fans because of their innate soothing sound that similar modern fans just seem to lack for some reason. I actually spent a few hours recently restoring an ancient oscillating desk fan i've had since the 90s that started to have mechanical issues. theres just something about how it sounds :D
Ooh have you seen the Deerma versions of the bladeless fans? They've been trouncing Dyson in terms of windspeed at a fraction of the cost. They're really popular in the posh parts of South East Asia.
I've had that exact Dyson fan/air purifier for almost 2 years now. It's run continuously in air purify mode that whole time and it's developed a strange irritating noise that comes and goes. I also have a couple other air purifiers and I think they are doing about the same job but more silently. One thing I dislike about the Dyson filter design is all the plastic built into the filters compared to other filters that are only made of filter material.
Isn’t the whole point of the Dyson’s unique design to move air across the whole room and not just blow it forward? I’m also curious about the efficiency of the two and how the unique tower design impacts airflow across a room at the lower speeds compared to your typical fan
Your testing is a bit flawed on the first test. Wind speed is a poor measure for the effectiveness of the fan, air volume would be much better. A better measurement would be cfm (cubic feet per minute or the metric equivalent). Think of it this way, a bullet travels fast but won't destroy a house, a car on the other hand travels much slower but will destroy a house. Speed is not everything. The sound level is inexcusable and the price is still ridiculous.
I got a cheaper Dyson fan it's called Dyson vacuum cleaner its sucks in the warm air and allergens downside I have hoover the house everytime I want to make a fan. Great video Mark its FANtastic ! ;)
I am into Dyson vacs. Had a DC14 for 13 years and its still running. Got a Dyson Ball Animal 2 last year and so far it’s running smoothly (If your wondering, yes I am keeping the DC14). But I am quite disappointed at how expensive these fans are. Even their lamps are expensive. There vacuums in my opinion are worth the price. The fan id say is worth less (I am saying that in 2 words as in it should be cheaper)
this is why i always hesitated to buy a dyson fan when i'd see them on sale for black friday. finally got the answers. i'll stick with my $50 honeywell
I tried a Dyson fan once and it's definitely not worth it. The high pitched sound from the tiny "bladeless" design drove me nuts. The noise was like nails on a chalk board plus the price was just too much. You can buy a good fan and air purifier for much less!
I think Dyson is less efficiënt bc the wind goes through 3 filters and than used for the fan. Kind of logical. That also explain that it gets noisy at higher levels.
i love how they always called it a bladeless fan, when infact it has blades its just inside the base and pushes the air up into the exhaust chambers (although iirc its a squirrel cage fan so not the type of blades like a normal box/desk fan but more like the ones found in cars and hvac units)
Good review, you could add power consumption to your data and the consumables that are included when owning these products. Thanks again for the review.😃
LMAO! Well Mark, this was unexpected . . . and fun! But now you need to tell us which air purifier you'd recommend at low, medium and high price points! 😎
@@MarkSpurrell I also need to thank you for indirectly leading me to buy a Galaxy S10e this week with your recent S9 Tech Rewind video. One "second look" video led to another, and I ended up buying an amazing phone in like new condition for US $360 on Amazon . . . and it's not freakin' huge!
I think you're missing any measurements regarding total air volume being moved. Not too sure how this would be measured, but pure fan speed might not be the best way to measure. For example, if I had a 1" diameter fan that managed to make a 20mph gust, and a 20" diameter fan that *only* made a 5mph gust, I'd still have a larger volume of air being moved by the larger one (probably).
as always, companies wanted to sell new things that you dont need and you pay big bucks on things you dont need. economics 101. There's a sucker born every minute.
to be fair, moving a bunch of air through a filter, having very user-friendly software to change anything on the fan, detector and tracker for your air quality, all seeable on an actually useful mobile app, a machined aluminum controller for the fan if you're not into their app, along with a very nice looking and solid metal frame vs a fan that has 3 speed settings is not just a matter of airspeed and loudness and also I understate how hard and loud it is to move air through a filter
Love your comparison 👍🏻 Without the gadgets, our existing ears and skin can already know that the Dyson fan is an overselling thing. But we just find it hard to get our own head around that visual beauty of the a Dyson fan I guess. So I relented and bought one Dyson fan myself and it’s just been sitting pretty in places I don’t need it much. Haha.
I agree with the findings but the chart at 3:23 is kinda misleading graphically. Looking at the windspeeds at 6ft away … how is 3.1 so low compared to 5.1?
What about a Box Fan + Furnace Filter? The Dysons main selling point is the air filter, and thats probably why the air speed is lower than a standard fan. For 40 bucks you can get a box fan and stick a really high quality 20" filter on the back - I have one in my house for wildfire season, and it works great.
Oh yeah i keep coming to your channel Since you review the wh 1000 xm 3 I watched lots of your videos But this one encouraged me to subscribe I really like this kind of videos Thank you Thank you Thank you
Nice review, Mark! The Dysons definitely look cool, but was curious as to how they performed. We've been using these Walmart type fans for several years, but recently tried out the Honeywell (QuietSet) Tower Fan which go for just under $100 CAD. Definitely looks nicer and takes up less space and on the low speeds, tends to be quieter.
Whoa !! Nice video Mark . This comparison kinda made me realize that traditional ways are better than modern ways. Even though they look cooler , they aren't always efficient :)
I recommend a ceiling fan. Because they are so big they don't blow air directly at you - they just circulate the air in the whole room. A bonus is that they aren't noisy either because they don't have to turn as fast as a normal fan.
You'd be surprised to know how power hungry those regular Walmart fans are. I suggest taking a look at inverter stand fans, they're DC instead of AC, and takes a lot less to power them; 30 watts vs 60-80 watts.
Would have loved to see the comparison done on comparable measures rather than arbitrary 1-10 or low/med/high settings. Such as wind speed to dB for each unit. Basically... move far enough away until the cheep fan measures the same windspeed as the Dyson does at 6 feet, then measure the dB for each unit at their respective distances.
A suggestion: include test for power rating I think this is why dyson is very expensive, due to its low power consumption (well if it is inverter, if not...meh)
As always, hoping you get more subs bro. You are such an underrated reviewer of tech. Great job with all of your vids and keep it up. Will be here supporting bro! Keep safe always 👍🏻
Since the Dyson fan is a dual-function device and the other fan is only performing one, it would only be fair to compare the standard fan to a Dyson unit that is a fan only. I agree that the most expensive is not always better, but the two items you are testing are not on the same playing field.
I have always thought Dyson products after their bagless vaccum cleaner inventions were over rated and quite expensive for what they are. I owned one of their bagless vacum cleaners some years back and it was good overall but did have problems that shouldn't have been there for what I paid for it so changed to another brand and it actually performs better and was cheaper. I wouldn't buy one of their fans I think they are ugly and there are better separate units around to buy.
Dyson fan looks cool. Ordinary fan makes cool.
Always thought the Dyson fans looked cool but always wondered about how efficient they were as fans
Me too! That's why I made the video.
I just had a gut feeling that Dyson is just a good marketeer. And products are just a esthetically good looking so they can have a higher sticker price.

As a fan, they perform worse. But they are actually air purifiers act as a fan.

Is air speed really what matters here? I don't want a bunch of fast air flying at my face. What about volume of air moved.
U earned a like with the closing joke! Made me chuckle. Great vid
Also compare their power usage
I think Dyson is less efficiënt bc the wind goes through 3 filters and than used for the fan. Kind of logical. That also explain that it gets noisy at higher levels.
But then again the dyson fan is meant to be an air purifier too
i love how they always called it a bladeless fan, when infact it has blades its just inside the base and pushes the air up into the exhaust chambers (although iirc its a squirrel cage fan so not the type of blades like a normal box/desk fan but more like the ones found in cars and hvac units)
Good review, you could add power consumption to your data and the consumables that are included when owning these products. Thanks again for the review.😃
the Dyson is just a computer fan blowing up threw restricted slits.
what a great idea for a video 😭 entertaining yet informative as always. thanks for making this, i had always been curious about how they compared!
How about in terms of electrical consumption?
Turning on a cheap electrical fan + air purifier vs. Dyson fan
LMAO! Well Mark, this was unexpected . . . and fun! But now you need to tell us which air purifier you'd recommend at low, medium and high price points! 😎
Glad you liked the video! I was wondering what kind of reception I was going to get from such a silly video.
There's a sucker born every minute.
to be fair, moving a bunch of air through a filter, having very user-friendly software to change anything on the fan, detector and tracker for your air quality, all seeable on an actually useful mobile app, a machined aluminum controller for the fan if you're not into their app, along with a very nice looking and solid metal frame
vs
a fan that has 3 speed settings
is not just a matter of airspeed and loudness
and also I understate how hard and loud it is to move air through a filter
Love your comparison 👍🏻
Without the gadgets, our existing ears and skin can already know that the Dyson fan is an overselling thing. But we just find it hard to get our own head around that visual beauty of the a Dyson fan I guess. So I relented and bought one Dyson fan myself and it’s just been sitting pretty in places I don’t need it much. Haha.
I'd rather have the louder fan. Perfect white noise machine.
Haha fair enough I guess?
@@MarkSpurrell l live next to 5+ bars and a park. Drowning out noise is a precious commodity.
Omg I love his apartment decor! 😍
Thank you!
@@MarkSpurrell
Oh absolutely! Wishing you well!
I agree with the findings but the chart at 3:23 is kinda misleading graphically. Looking at the windspeeds at 6ft away … how is 3.1 so low compared to 5.1?
For that kind of money i would expect the dyson to live longer than me. Even more than that.
Isn't dyson thing literally pretty novelty item for rich people?
I can imagine repair cost vs buying another $15 fan.
Dyson trying to reinvent the wheel, I mean Fan
What about a Box Fan + Furnace Filter? The Dysons main selling point is the air filter, and thats probably why the air speed is lower than a standard fan.
For 40 bucks you can get a box fan and stick a really high quality 20" filter on the back - I have one in my house for wildfire season, and it works great.
Ive always wanted a dyson fan but now I'm rethinking my decision. could you also test a *vornado* fan please
Dyson invented so many new ways for something to be unrepairable and obsolete
Oh yeah i keep coming to your channel
Since you review the wh 1000 xm 3
I watched lots of your videos
But this one encouraged me to subscribe
I really like this kind of videos
Thank you Thank you Thank you
Nice review, Mark!
Over engineered just to be "different". As a engineer myself, that's one of the cardinal sins I try to avoid thru my career.
Can you let me know the chair model. Looks pretty cool. I am in the market for a new office chair.
I thought the same thing when he cut to the video of the fan. Cool fan... but where'd you get that chair???
I love tech, but why not just buy an AC ..
There was a lot of air filters so I guess that would reduce the power????
lets all face it - we wanted the Dyson fan so we can say we can afford the Dyson fan.
You can get a cheap household filter and put it on the backside of the fan to improve air quality.
Dude, I can’t believe you’re 25
I really like my Walmart fan for sleeping.
Whoa !! Nice video Mark . This comparison kinda made me realize that traditional ways are better than modern ways. Even though they look cooler , they aren't always efficient :)
Pretty cool video. So apparently I won't be changing my cheap fans any time soon.
That's probably for the best! 😅
Hehe my cheap fan is running rn
Dyson : I can sleep at night ( linear airflow)
Walmart type : kept waking me up
Dyson : wins ( and bonus its dust free)
I recommend a ceiling fan. Because they are so big they don't blow air directly at you - they just circulate the air in the whole room. A bonus is that they aren't noisy either because they don't have to turn as fast as a normal fan.
Freckles : "Sometimes things that are expensive are worse"
You'd be surprised to know how power hungry those regular Walmart fans are. I suggest taking a look at inverter stand fans, they're DC instead of AC, and takes a lot less to power them; 30 watts vs 60-80 watts.
Would have loved to see the comparison done on comparable measures rather than arbitrary 1-10 or low/med/high settings. Such as wind speed to dB for each unit. Basically... move far enough away until the cheep fan measures the same windspeed as the Dyson does at 6 feet, then measure the dB for each unit at their respective distances.
Say more about that chair. 🥺
Please!
Dyson need to improve the noise level
I never used my Dyson fan for cooling. Only for heating purposes.
A suggestion: include test for power rating
I think this is why dyson is very expensive, due to its low power consumption (well if it is inverter, if not...meh)
Dyson’s are also portals to the lizard world..
If you put a filter on the Walmart fan, you’d see a change.
Great this is why I love RUclips.
such an awesome comparison
As always, hoping you get more subs bro. You are such an underrated reviewer of tech. Great job with all of your vids and keep it up.
Will be here supporting bro! Keep safe always 👍🏻
What an awesome comparison, excellent content Mark!👍
Dyson is the Apple of the Fan world.
And the cheap Walmart can work 24-7 and last years
Thank you for this!
Try testing without the filters? It probably reduces airflow by over 50%...
