I grew up playing the Crash Bandicoot games. The death animations were part of the charm of playing the games. That's something you don't easily forget.
Haha I didn't even think about that aspect, but it totally makes sense how it can be a huge detriment to speed runners! Which Crash games do you specifically run? Which one is your favorite to run?
Watched this video and then immediately watched it again because of the subtle audio-visual pairings that are peppered through the script. Loved the content and loved the execution
This is one of those videos that can potentially launch a channel's growth, really great stuff to see! As someone making content myself, I've learnt a thing or 2 from watching this
After discovering Crash way back at 4’s release, at some point I had found out how genuinely creative the deaths could get. it made my gameplay a ton more fun, atleast when I do casual play. Crash is personally my favorite game, but i don’t hear about it much anymore. Thanks for the short and sweet video. :D
Hey there, thanks for watching the video and sharing your experience! Really cool to hear you enjoyed Crash games, the original Naughty Dog trilogy is definitely one of my top favorite games of all time. It really is a bummer he's kind of a forgotten character nowadays. I'd love to see more 3d platformer games, even if it isn't Crash necessarily.
@@yoncreator glad to share! I’ve always preferred the revamped trilogy as my absolute favorite platformer(besides human fall flat), as I had the most experience there, I never got to play crash games released below that, heck, I might even try to sometime!
@B_is_for_Boom8th The revamped trilogy is definitely awesome! If you love platformers you should try the free demo called "The Big Catch: Tacklebox" on steam right now! I have a new video about it, and it's my favorite new platformer!
That's awesome, I actually didn't really understand how awesome these death animations were until recently when I started doing research for this video! Very cool that you noticed those details while you were playing. Naughty Dog's efforts definitely didn't go to waste!
I remember many times dying on purpose just out of curiosity to know what the death animation would be like (sorry Crash 😅). It's really impressive how well animated they are, I didn't want to compare, but it's too bad that a lot of these death animations looked weird in the remakes.
You're definitely right. It wasn't inside the scope of this video, but looking at some of the animations even in the N. Sane Trilogy, I personally like the original ones by Naughty Dog more.
I know this is about the original trilogy and mostly crash 3, but I’m surprised 4 didn’t get a mention since it has a good amount of unique death animations
That’s a great point and it would have been a good idea to include Crash 4 as reference. I did play Crash 4 and really enjoyed it. To give you some context on my focus for Crash 1 2 and 3: During my research, I found it fascinating how much effort Naughty Dog put into the death animations-such a niche detail for the time when most games didn’t emphasize them as much. These animations were groundbreaking in the PS1 era, but nowadays, unique death animations feel more like an industry norm. That’s why I chose to focus on the original trilogy-it was truly ahead of its time!
Death animations are another part of a game's overall aesthetic. If a game goes for a light-hearted cartoony style, these animations should match that and maybe even futher reinforce it. These animations can also work as a juxtaposition to contrast the mood the game has established so far to hint that there's something else going on. But in general they're a way to give failure some impact, to show that it is being acknowledged and maybe even give payoff for player curiosity. Though personally I was never a fan of the angel death animation. Mainly because it feels like the punchline is being skipped. The death animation is the punchline while the angel is an aftermath, a statement that it has occurred. But if the character instantly turns into an angel it basically takes away the punchline, takes away the possible surprise and instead just says "character died, moving on". On its own it's unsatisfying, like a denial of seeing anything interesting. It works better when it is part of something as a confirmation for an implication, but on its own it's just denial of fun.
Yeah that's an interesting analysis for the angel dead animation. You're definitely right in that there is kind of a "jump in logic" between running into an enemy and then immediately turning into an angel. It's also a less satisfying (?) animation to see than some of the other ones for sure. I never really knew how to quite put it to words but you've definitely explained it well!
Personally, I love the original trilogy by Naughty Dog and Crash 4 by Toys for Bob. I've played Wrath of Cortex as a kid, not knowing anything about Naughty Dog having left the IP, and I didn't really enjoy it as much as the previous games. I stopped playing Crash games after that, but I understand some people started with these non-Naughty Dog Crash games and they really like it still. For me, I think the OG Crash games did it the best.
Nah that Coco death scene was perfect, only death scene that actually felt like old school Crash. I’m talking about the titans games, the animations in those games are fluid asf, very squash and stretch, much more so then Crash 4 which has a more Disney quality to it. The best animation in any Crash game is CTR Nitro Fueled.
"Dying in video games sucks. One way to make it not suck is to make it look pretty."
- me, 2024
“Even death can be beautiful” -someone, probably
-Hi buddy.

Yeah for sure, they were so iconic even to me as a child playing the ps1 games for the first time!
My favourite one is in Crash 3 where he just gets absolutely disintegrated
That one is quite sick for sure!
as a Crash speedrunner these animations are the bane of my existence
Werk

Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!
Crash’s death animations were the inspiration for the recent Antonblast.
Heck, the whole franchise inspired Antonblast.
Wow, I"m going to have to check that out! Thank you for the cool insight!

@@yoncreator Appreciate it! Likewise brother

Some more good stuff my guy! Love to see the man at work again. NGL 40+ death animations in one game is crazy!
Thanks so much for watching! Appreciate the support as always!
I always loved the death animations in crash, I used to die on purpose just to see them again lol

Great stuff man, this deserves way more eyes on it.
Hey thanks for taking the time to write a kind comment! Glad to hear you enjoyed the video!
Antonblast giving crash’s death animations a comeback was so cool
I gotta check out Antonblast, I've been seeing a lot of comments about it
@ you absolutely have to, I played the entire thing and it was so fun, highly recommend it
crash 2 was my first ps1 game and i'll always love it
Crash 2 is my favorite of the three for sure!
I used to die a lot on the Hog riding levels just to see him land flat on his behind on those spikey obstacles 😂
Haha I knew I wasn't the only one!
Although Crash popularized it, the concept of this style of death animation was pioneered by Bubsy.
Great point!
Dangerous Dave 2 have a lot of "Die scenes"
Damn Mario 64 has 20 death animations? I can only think of two. When he runs out of health getting hit by a enemy and faints and drowning.
Yeah it's kind of wild! I had to look them up myself!
Cool Video!
Thank you!
You just earned yourself a new sub, this video was great
Hi, thank you so much for watching the video and subscribing! I hope I can continue to make interesting and entertaining videos for you in the future.
Two in a row!
Thanks for watching! Really appreciate the support! Be on the look out for the next few uploads... Working on that bounty hunter video

When I was a child, I REALLY HATED THIS GAME!!!!
some of the newer-newer games kind of feel more like crash but mind over mutants and crash of the titans destroyed it badly.

nice
This game is great
Thanks so much for checking it out!
Noice.
El buen Carlos, nada le gana
Later games didn’t take a turn for the worst..wtf.
The animation in the later games got better and better.
Well, except for that one Coco death animation in Crash 4 that was pretty dark…
Nah that Coco death scene was perfect, only death scene that actually felt like old school Crash.

Crash 4 is solid my guy 😅
I agree! I played it on launch and enjoyed it quite a bit!
What about now? Do you regret going for full completion after 4 years since its release?
In fact, Bubsy 3D already did it before Crash (even though the game was a big shit).
Haha, I’ve never played Bubsy 3D but I have heard of the OG
Everytime Bubsy dies, the death animation varies. But Crash Bandicoot made it smoother.
