18:07 the end of the level 1 has (boxes you got)/0 near the gem room after you get the clear gem. I guess this is how they hinted that you need 0 boxes!
Crash 2 definitely felt like a terrific escalation of the first game like how Toy Story 2 feels like a bigger, more fulfilling adventure. The scale is bigger.
Great video! Crash 2 has consistently been my favorite game in the franchise - and my favorite 3d platformer of all time - for years! And I don't see it losing that spot anytime soon. Cool to see someone talk at length about its greatness!
Thank you so much for actually matching the gameplay footage to the narration for the entire video, this is one of the only videos I've seen that actually does that! Great video
Awesome video, my friend! I really love your voice, it's very calming and informative. If you keep putting these great retrospectives out, one of them feels like it's guaranteed to hit the algorithm and give you the views you deserve - great work! :) Ps. would love a CTR retrospective sometime in the future!
I have a soft spot for the old Crash games, takes me back to the days when i was a kid visiting my cousins and play PS1 and PS2 games almost all day, especially Crash 2 & Warped. These game were and still are a lot of fun to play.
i saw you from reddit and youre probably one of my favourite crash youtubers for the way you commentate and humour your videos, good shit man. Recently its like ive stepped into a goldmine of content creators who make videos of shit im a fan of
17:58 the Blue gem will always be my proudest gaming moment ever. I was a literal kid, like 10 years old, and we were messing around in Turtle Woods. I straight up made up something like "to get the blue gem you have to leave all crates behind", bragging about it like I knew, like the game couldn't keep a secret from me. I was completely inventing. I had no internet to have previous access to that piece of information with, I had no other friends who already got the gem. I completely made it up in front of my friends, then I got to the end of the level with 0 boxes, and I was shocked to find the blue gem. But I just had to keep my poker face bc I pretended the whole time I knew that was the method. Internally, I was screaming. I metaphorically shat myself that moment and I had to pretend like I was in total control of the situation. It felt AWESOME edit for 18:30 lmao I swear also yeah the nitro staircase made me feel like 200 IQ bc "wait a sec, they don't bounce"
Crash 2 along with 3 has always been one of my top favorite games ever! It was one of my first ps1 games along with metal gear solid and spyro, all of which still hold up today 😁 Aside from the soundtrack my fav fhing about the game is the secret warp rooms and areas, i still have the printed out cheats and gamefaqs from way back when too; 1998 was a wonderful year for sure lol 😄
When you get the clear gem from Turtle Woods and then re-enter and reach the end again, the box counter has zero in the denominator. It's pretty obvious they were hinting at completing the level without breaking any box. It wasn't hard to figure out at all.
I played this level about 100 times to try and find the blue gem. It wasn’t before years later when I first watched a RUclips video where I frist saw how you got the gem.
The giveaway for the blue gem in level 1 is that, once you’ve acquired the box gem, replaying the level will result in the box tally at the end of the stage saying [insert number]/0. This is your clue to figuring out you have to break zero boxes to get the secret.
Never knew that, as a kid I just found out and don't ask me how, it must've been the imagination of a kid willing to try out something that seems to make no sense, but cool to know that there is a big hint in the game.
Great video on Crash 2!! I grew up with this game and know it inside and out. I clicked thinking it would just be a simple comfort watch, but you actually made me think about the game in ways I haven't before. The thought Naughty Dog put into justifying the collection of crystals and gems from a story perspective is a testament to how forward thinking and talented they were. They were challenging genre conventions and pushing things forward as early as the PS1 era.
This game was the first game I ever played and is also my favorite game of all time. I’ve since played tons of other games in varying genres but this game just feels like home to me. If I have a stressful day at work I will often sit down and 100% this game in about 3 hours.
Well what can I say. This was my first video game ever that I played when I was 3 years old. Only thing I can be is just thankful for this game for introducing me to gaming as whole. Amazing video keep it up!
Crash 2 is the definition of 'quality jump up'. I was hoping you'd talj more about the music and atmosphere that this game shines by. Everytime i play it, i enjoy looking at the colors while enjoying the music.
The secrets were something I completely adored about this game. They really made me way more curious than game designers probably ever intended for. I remember playing Demon’s Souls years later and always wondered about how to get to that world behind the broken 6th arch stone. I sort of figured that because it exists, then surely there’s some crazy way to get there. Much of my thinking felt like it came straight out of Crash 2.
Cortex's boss battle is an interesting one. I actually really enjoy it despite how easy it is. The atmosphere is second to none, the jet pack gets to go at top speed, and if you do lose it feels super eerie - the old Crash games just had such high stakes!
Even tho I did not played that many Crash Bandicoot games, but I still feel a little bit of nostalgia when I played Crash Bandicoot 3, getting every crystal, gem, and power up’s felt like I was pro at the game.
The clue for the Turtle Woods gem comes from the box icon at the end of the level iirc. You get the box gem, then if you replay the level and get an incomplete number of boxes, the box icon will show x/0. Might just be an addition for the N Sane Trilogy I'm Mandela Effecting in tho.
There is a hint for the blue gem on the original Crtash 2, if you get the clear gem and replay the level the counter at the end will still be there and will be like this: boxes collected/0 hinting that you should try to get 0 boxes
The Blue gem... I got it as a kid and I felt like a genious. I have no idea as to why I decided to go through that level without breaking any box, I do not know how I realized that I could do that and that it was worth trying... I guess that's just the imagination and will to try that you have as a kid. As for the game in general... Crash 2 has been my first-ever videogame and I'll always enjoy it.
The blue gem is actually pretty easy to figure out... Cause the 1st time you will miss it, for sure... Then you will replay the level trying to find something, and when you reach the end of the stage you will see a big box with a counter saying "50/0" for example... Meaning you broke 50 boxes, and you should break zero to get the gem... This was actually the 1st I figured out by myself as a kid... The 2nd was the green gem, completely by accident
Crash 2 is the best in the series. It was such a leap over Crash 1 to me with all the different types of levels and things. Crash Bash is an amazing game as well that doesnt really get talked about often, and I am still, to this day, trying to 200% complete a co-op run with a friend. We play every couple months.
It's nice to know there are others out there who share my love for the Crash series. PS1 Crash 2. Best part of being a 90s kid. Forget Nintendo. PS1 is where it was at.
Back in the day my family only had Crash 1 and Crash 3 warped so I missed out on 2. Playing it for the first time years later I loved it and would’ve loved it as a kid as much as I did warped lol. Had Crash Bash too and didn’t like it lol
Yeah, the bosses. It's more egregious considering the two good ones are REALLY friggin' good! Almost wish they just repeated Ripper Roo from 1 and, I don't know, thought of Dingodile a year earlier! And of course actually got to add the fight to the Cortex fight (never even thought of that). Six year old me also wanted more death animations but apart from that, damned near perfect game!
My biggest issue with Crash 2 is each level is redone 2 or 3 times. This also happens with Crash 3 which is one of my favourite Crash games. Honestly for me I think Crash TWOC has the best levels since they are mostly all different.
This was a really good video which outlines everything great about crash 2 without shying away from its weak points. Personally I've always had this nagging feeling that while an amazing upgrade to the game engine, formula, mechanics and crash himself, the levels and themes are a bit of a let down. Not to disregard some of the amazing ones particularly in the first couple of warp rooms, but I definitely tend to get to about room 3-4 and feel like it's just a slog of being stuck with a bunch of samey uninspiring level themes. The ruins are fun but the theme is a downgrade from the beautiful lost city levels from crash 1. The bee levels share most of the art from the boulder ones which is just snow lite, but at least the chase and bear levels are great. It suffers the same problem as crash 3 where they have 10 types of level art but stretched across 25+ levels, but at least 3 had different times of day and lighting to freshen it up. I wish crash 2 had ruins at afternoon, sunset and night rather than all just being in the dark, for example. And honestly the less said about some of the bosses, the better. Again, something 3 really did better so looking forward to your video on that! subbed :)
This is my first video I've seen of yours and I'm just here to say I loved it! Tho I'm really curious to see why exactly Crash 3 hits it more for you. For me Crash 2 is really hard to beat when it comes to the original trilogy, hell the whole franchise. But I do think it has lots of problems. Also while all the other kids were running round like sonic, we were spinning with our arms out and throwing up 🗣️

This is a great review, and I completely agree with basically all of your points. Well except Lex Lang Cortex as I think Cortex in Twinsanity is the character's best, but Clancy Brown is unboubtfully great here. A difference of opinion is normal. Crash 2 has the best feeling gameplay movement. You summarized how it feels to play this game very well!
Great video! How did you get this game to render in 16:9 without looking bad? Every time I try to make it like that on an emulator, it had some visual glitches.

“Crash 2 is considered one of the best of the whole franchise” Well when you have a franchise with like 2 good games, 4 of which are in the ps1 and 2 are remakes of those games, Not hard for that to happen lmao
Crash 2 is a nostalgic treasure. It also really highlights how great the visual style of the PS1 games is. All the colours, lighting, the polygonal looks of characters. Also the stages still feel very "natural", rather than the world tour style they have in 3, where you have a lot of variety, but they do not feel very connected to the original Crash setting. Also, yes, Clancy Brown is definitely the best Cortex, especially in this game!

And yes there will be a Crash 3 video!

I hate crash 2 honestly.
Babe wake up. Some random RUclipsr I've never heard of has dropped a banger video essay!

This was one of my most played discs back in the day. A classic! Thanks for the video, I can tell how much you love the game.
Crash Bandicoot 2 was my first Crash game. I loved playing it at my babysitter's house. It holds a special place in my heart.

I figured out the secret to the blue diamond almost immediately. The level was very simple and didn't seem to have any obvious secrets.
There is a hint for the blue gem on the original Crtash 2, if you get the clear gem and replay the level the counter at the end will still be there and will be like this:

It's possible that the levels being somewhat similar throughout the game had to do with reusing assets to save space on the disc.

How did u feel about the remakes ??? Compared to the original.???
Cash Bandicoot 2: cortex strikes back is the most crash bandicoot crash bandicoot game that ever did crash bandicoot.

Crash 2 is the best Crash game of all time imo. Crash 4, Crash 3, and Crash Twinsanity are close behind it but nothing tops it.
Crash 2 is my favourite in the series, warped is great and so if the first but the 2nd feels like a good combination of the both of them. 4 is okay too but it's not as good as the originals
Also when I was a kid I read that manual sometimes it's all you had as a guide of sorts
The best Crash game. Warped just had too many vehicle levels
Gonna make a wild guess and assume because you played it as a kid
Yes there’s no other reason to like the highest rated game in the 38th best selling video game franchise of all time than nostalgia
Mastered on ps1 102%❤❤❤
the best out of the trilogy and not too hard like 1.
Crash 2 is my favorite, 3 is innovative but innovations are undercooked, so 3 could be better with all realised potential and still be a little easy for my taste Also powerups in normal run are criminally underused by level design itself
“Crash 2 is considered one of the best of the whole franchise”
Well when you have a franchise with like 2 good games, 4 of which are in the ps1 and 2 are remakes of those games, Not hard for that to happen lmao
My least favorite thing about this game is it's lack of a level editor.
Then Crash 3 came out and shoehorned in too many vehicles and gives you under utilized power ups due to half the game being non platforming
But there's no "e" in "Striking"
It seems no matter how much I comb through a video I will miss something lol
@Yorm_ well they're good either way, maybe just do an editing pass
Are you from near Baltimore by chance?
