    Whole thing should've just committed to its format and been a much longer examination of the story as a Netflix show. As a 3 1/2 hour movie it seems weirdly undercooked in places, like Scorcese was trying to stretch into Sopranos / Boardwalk territory but just couldn't get there.
    A shame as I'm sure he would've proved himself a master of TV as ably as he has in film.
    Is it cinema ? assuredly, but it could've been utterly outstanding long format TV. 8/10 is right on the nose for this one.

    • @KinnonP
      @KinnonP 4 года назад +5

      He did, and at 73 minutes it's plays like Scorcese doing a short form TV movie, and brilliantly for sure, great foundation work, as he did with Vinyl, but what I'm thinking of here is Scorcese embracing the modern long form, multiple episode story arc. There's a chance he might be tempted to have a try with the DiCaprio "Devil in the White city" coming up, but it doesn't look likely. I'll keep my fingers crossed none the less.

      But that's been typical Scorcese since at least the 1990s, right? Two and a half to three hours is the usual length. Boardwalk Empire, an HBO series he helped produce (and FYI is damn good, particularly in its lack of pulling punches on the horror of what too many OG mobsters were like), makes me wonder if some of his later films could have worked better as TV miniseries.

      It's for time and energy. It's MUCH faster and easier to awkwardly splice two not-great takes together than to reshoot a third take, especially because it's really hard to get everything EXACTLY THE SAME as it was during the original shooting. I personally can almost always tell the difference in audio, lighting, and positioning when someone does that. ESPECIALLY audio.
      So basically you can quickly and easily have an awkward cut between two takes you already have... or you can take the time and energy to fully reshoot a third take (that might not end up any better than the two you've got) and have it end up being just as awkward when it ends up obviously not from the same shooting session as every other shot in the video.
      Considering the sheer volume of videos Bob produces in a week and the general quality level he's going for.... it's just not worth it. Maybe if he put out one very long thinkpiece a month like Lindsay Ellis does it would be worth the time to go back and make everything perfect, but even she does this stuff sometimes (though usually only in VO)

    Good film, but it had a few scenes that just ran long. Bob's review is spot on about the un-Scorseselike lack of soundtrack to drive the cinematography. With the stark tone and unromantic look at mob life, it feels like Scorsese drew more from Donnie Brasco or Kill the Irishman than his own previous forays in the genre.

    We get it, you can make this movie. It's the only movie hes ever made. It's like he got favors from the mob early on and in return for his success, he now has to make this same movie over and over for fear of the actual mob coming after him.
    Martin Scorsese presents: "Hey, remember the mob? And basically the only actors I ever use? Remember them? Well heres a movie about that and starring them, but longer, slower, and released on a platform I've shit on recently!"

      @Sinjin Smyth I guess you're right, being an absolute fucking schmuck with a fragile ego and no hope of ever being loved is bang on in trend so well done being with the times 🙏🏽

    Personally, it was a good film but it just wasn’t for me. Found myself getting a bit bored at times and didn’t really find the story that interesting. The CGI stuff is incredible though. I didn’t realise that it was CGI for the whole movie.
    Overall for me 6/10

    Parasite has been making the biggest awards waves this year and yet isn't a frontrunner for best picture? More moviebob in his movie-bubble unwilling to step anywhere near foreign films. He didn't even review The Farewell.

      @gentlemandemon 4 года назад +2

      idk if it's exclusively a "refusing to see foreign cinema" thing as much of an access thing. I know parasite wasn't playing near enough to me that I could find the time to see it despite wanting to. He just did an episode of the The Big Picture on "Mr Go" after all.

      @@CastlesComments That's a valid criticism, but it just doesn't feel like the whole picture to me. I'm not gonna sit here and pretend I know Bob's entire ethos for his reviews, but I can imagine a number of factors are at work. Yes, he likes oddities, so those catch his eyes most keenly. I also imagine he's gotta play to the algorithm, which means directing his attention to movies that'll catch more viewers. I'd also wager that the Escapist has some role in assigning reviews, though I can't be sure of that. I'd like to hear about more foreign films, but I can't fault Bob for not talking about movies he hasn't/can't/doesn't want to see. There are other critics that could probably cover those, RUclips is a big place. I know how Bob approaches movies and like hearing it, but I also listen to other reviewers to get diverse (sometimes contradictory) opinions. I think it'd be cool for Bob to cover more diverse stuff (I think he could've had an interesting perspective on some of the anime movies that made waves in the US like "Your Name" or "A Silent Voice"), but I also know there are other critics that will cover it like Chris Stuckman. It is what it is.
