What a fight...love watching fighters from the 30s and 40s.Modern boxing fans dont realise how good old school fighters really where..How game was Mickey Walker and Max Schmeling was a classic counter puncher.
Mark Davies yea imagine if these fights were in HD and in color be amazing
canzoneri, mclarnin and ross are amazing to watch so talented imagine them in colour hd.
Mickey was holding all night; you casuals praise this but trash Mayweather n it's the same thing😑.
@@bunnymanmoe8819 walker was a blown up welter fighting a man who gave louis his first defeat, could floyd move up that much weight class?i think not.....
@@_friedie yes thats what i said..
Mickey Walker, what a fighter!! UNBELIEVABLE man!!
Thanks for the video!
What a great match!! Two very good boxers! Thanks!
Mickey Walker was an animal lmao;
here he is a middleweight,
who iirc started his career at 147(?)
fighting a heavyweight, and not just any heavyweight but Max freakin Schmeling!
and he's goin lookin for him from the jump lol!
Tryin to check-hook and bully a heavyweight!
smh madness, just madness
but i can't help but have mad respect for The Toy Bulldog man.
I've been reading about these guys for decades and if any fight footage of Harry Greb is ever found it'll be priceless. Greb beat Walker and a ton of Hall of Famers at middle, light heavy and heavy weight. Those fighters were really something way back when.
It's all the more impressive for me, having come to this video right after watching Schmeiling beat the tar out of Jose Santa, who was 6'9", 250 pounds, and ripped to shreds .
One of the toughest men ever to lace up a pair of gloves.
Almost 50% of the fighters then had to fight up to the weight class.
@@hilbertsinn6886that was a choreographed exhibition. Not saying that Max couldn't beat him.
Walker brings it. Schmeling was ready for it, seemed naturally stronger and used his size effectively. In the clinch Max pushed and he was busy. Max fought a smart fight and was consciously landing counters too.
Official Weights: Walker, 174 pounds; Schmeling, 188 pounds. Absolute warriors.
Walker started as a welterweight and here he is taking right hands from a true heavyweight.
Those right hand counters of Schemling are fucking brutal and Walker ate a fair few of them!
The infighting back than was vicious
Most were flat foot plodders, too easy to hit
@aarondigby9859 not all. Harry Greb was very light on his feet. Going back to 1890 till 1911, Barbados Joe Walcott had to leap to reach some of his opponents jaws. At 5ft 1ins, he had to to reach some of his much taller, often heavier opponents. He couldn't afford to be flst footed.
This is great to watch. Just imagine, almost 90 years ago.
Mickey Walker looks like he could've done well in MMA. His body is just like Igor Vovchanchyn's.
What a courageous heart Walker had. The contest between his left hook and Max's long right was marvellous to watch. Both truly deserve their places in the top echelon of boxers. Golovkin would find it hard to defeat Walker who, from this footage, had an excellent chin and could hit quickly and hard with both hands.
A very good fight, and I am very impressed with Walker. He never gave up.
The ref should have called the fight after the second knockdown. Schmeling was too big, too smart, and too strong. The guy beat Joe Louis in his prime. But man Walker had heart and guts.
Max's style was to distance his opponents with his left, than measuring up for his vicious right cross counter, max was a very patent and disaplined fighter waiting for an opening, mickey was very tough and game, amazing he kasted as king as he did
You're right, but Max was very strong in the infight here too, throwing good uppercuts!
Madison Square Garden Bowl at 48th street and Northern Boulevard,it’s now a Stop and Shop
Max's explosive counter right on full display
Schmeling's right is dynamite but his left is just for show.
Schmeling had one of the great right hands in boxing history and Walker is eating them all night. How he survived the eighth with both eyes closed and getting knocked from post to post I’ll never know. When Schmeling hit Joe Louis with the same right hands it was good night Irene! The Brown Bomber didn’t make it out!
What an interesting contrast between 2 fighters a slugging middleweight vs a Heavy with no jab. This is just a bad matchup for Walker, there's no chance he can knock Max out (his chin is too good). 18:50 he hits him with everything he has and Max isnt affected much. The ending is particularly hard to watch, it shoulda been called way sooner! Your gonna give Walker brain damage! Just brutal. Walker is something extra special no doubt he looked better against Max than many heavyweights. I kinda envisioned Walker just a lil faster!
Funny thing is the best Jack Sharkey could do against Walker was a draw.
he was 31 here with 93 fights under his belt.
Damn ring announcer didn't even have a mic ; just yell 😁😁😁
At round 8 Max is just feeling sorry for the poor guy! Why Schmeling didn't go for the kill after Walker got up from the knockdown shows what a humanitarian Max was, in the ring and out of the ring. Absolute respect for one of the greatest of all time! Walker was a brute survivor, respect!
Max had movie star good looks and a build that almost matched Baer. They were very similar. Schmeling more scientific Baer harder punch.
"Max had movie star good looks" the german Errol Flynn lol
Baer had 2 inches of height over Schmeling and weighed anywhere from 15 to 20 pounds heavier.
I didn't hear the weights of the boxers, BUT it seemed to be a catch-weight contest rather than one between two heavies. The Toy Bulldog lived up to his nickname.

Awesome fight
All of these comments and no one notices that these guys are boxing as today's guys. Imagine Oscar De Lay Hoya in this ring.

The equipment then was pure cowhide leather you can hear the punches land.
All these old fighters hug excessively n get praised but everybody bash Floyd for doing it 😑.
Talk about a double standard.
