  • Max Schmeling was heavyweight champion of the world and the first man to KO Joe Louis. He fought Joe Louis, Jack Sharkey, Max Baer and Johnny Risko - American fighters who dominated the sport of Boxing in the middle years of the twentieth century. He held the German, European light heavyweight titles, and was later crowned Heavyweight Champion of the World. His megafights sold out the Yankees Stadium to the tune of 80,000 fans.
A favourite of Germany's artistic society, he was later used by Hitler and the Third Reich as a propaganda hero - despite himself never being a part of the Nazi Party and opposing racism and bigotry in his private life.
He socialised with some of the most important figures of the twentieth century including Roosevelt, Al Capone, and Marlene Dietrich. He fought at the Battle of Crete as a German Paratrooper in World War Two. At the height of Nazi persecution, he saved two young Jewish boys by hiding them in his own house.
When he died at 99, he was the oldest living ex heavyweight champion in history.

I've always admired Max Schmeling. He was a great fighter in his days and true gentleman. To justify his war years, every healthy person in his prime would've been then in his situation.

What an amazing human being! He had a certain stoicism to him. Both in the ring and out. He always stayed cool and always believed in Scheming!

    Max was an amazing man!
He wasn't a Nazi at all and didn't even like Hitler...who later, may have tried to get him killed but the damage that Joe did to Max's back is what helped him stop being a paratrooper where Hitler could drop him into hot spots, etc.
Joe Louis and Max became good friends and it was Max who helped pay for Joe's medical bills after the IRS and US Government put our American Hero into the poor house. Later, Max even paid for Joe's funeral costs.
The life stories of both Max & Louis are INCREDIBLE.
There is a REASON that the "official narrative" stays away from their stories...as it would reveal that Max was a good man, a loyal German who hated Hitler and that Joe's patriotism was betrayed by the nation he loved & served.
Truth is stranger than History...I have found.
HOO-YAH & God Bless BOTH great men's Souls.

Its a damn shame that America can do ONE Decent ode to a Great German boxer WITHOUT the War-time propaganda! What s worse, is that in a complete contradiction, you claim that he didn t want anything to do with the Nazi s , yet , RACIST America , (whom hated Joe Loius because he was black) , would tag him as "Nazi" in such a mindles and Stereotypical way and almost wrecking his career over his nationality! Sad! What Great Fighter he was ! And btw, the reason why he couldnt fight back against Louis in their 2nd fight, was because he broke his back and it gave out early in the 1st round , he hung on as long as he could but it obvious he couldn't protect himself, ..but you d rather talk about Hitler than rely the facts about the boxer!
