- Practically unknown in the public conscience before 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), also sometimes ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) or Daesh, had been a leading insurgent group in Iraq since its foundation in 1999 by Abu Musab al-Zarqani meant to fight against the country's Shia minority in the hope of creating a sectarian conflict that would unite Sunni Muslims against a common enemy. Following the 2003 US-led Invasion of Iraq, coalition forces became a key target for the group. After a deadly bombing campaign in the second half of the 2000s, the US cracked down and al-Zarqani was killed with most of the group's leadership also being nullified. However, under the leadership of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi the group slowly regained strength and was able to capitalise on the Syrian Civil War from 2011 by creating the Al-Nusra Front to further its aims in the neighbouring state.

btw as an iranian i would say one major difference between Taliban and ISIS is that Taliban only focus on Afghanistan and only wanted to create an islamic republic there ( their main goal ) and they are most likely okay with other muslims like Shias etc... but for the ISIS, they are totally not ok with other muslims and Islamic countries and their Main goal is to create something like an Islamic empire in the middle east with their own ideology.

As native Syrian you did absolutely fantastic by trying so hard to spell the names correctly in Arabic
do you support Bashar, or FSA?
and i want to know the situation in syria, information is difficult to get from mid east country
@@pops7249 let me clear it to you: FSA and many other military groups are trying to get to the throne of ruling in Syria, they're all fighting for that goal and if they somehow managed to kill Bashar and destroy his government, they will lead to even worse conflicts (like it can get any worse already.). So even if Bashar is a murderer, he's still a million times better than any other choice available even if he's not a saint.
@@pops7249 I am a Native Syrian too..
While most people don't support him.. some still do.. I don't live there but I get news from relatives very often.
The government itself is self centered and doesn't care much about how people live..
Electricity is limited.. some people get it for a few hours and some other areas have it 24/7..
Also currency is extremely low.. a US dollar is well over 1000 Syrian lyras I believe..
Also food has become very basic at most households so people can't eat what they want..
Also crime has increases a lot in the recent years.. some include kidnapping people and returning them for very high amounts of money.. Can range from 5M-500M depending on background of victim's family.. and police is useless as they'd reply we can't find them or smthn.. they'd only try if you bribe them and bribery has got so common in all aspects.. even though it's bad.. you can't do much as a citizen without having to bribe others or else they won't help you.. includes police, government, shops, etc..
Some cities have better living standards than others.. but no city is completely safe.. The civil war is over but there is still some fighting issues in a city or two
Also the living ranking was graded as the worst in the world by some US organisation

Even forgetting about their affiliates around the world, remember that it’s not just Iraq and Syria that the former central caliphate claimed back when they existed and were expanding. I am aware that Wikipedia has it listed as “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria”, but as far as I know it actually stands for “Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham”, with al-Sham or Greater Syria being the coastal Levant + inland Syria, hence why it’s often translated to “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant”, because it it’s more than just Iraq and Syria.
Their territorial claims back when they initially renamed themselves to include Syria was only within the modern day borders of Syria, so not really at least on their end. The word Sham in Arabic actually originally referred to Damascus specifically, not even the rest of Syria. The historic Bilad al-Sham (country of Damascus) simply expanded far further than that, similar to how New York State is far bigger than New York City. The designation ISIL was simply adopted by Obama and co. to hide the degree of their involvement in Syria, since initially, Obama only wished to intervene with airstrikes in Iraq.

Forgot to mention that Al Nusra front bolstered its numbers from Prisoners that Bashar Al Assad had released from Tadmor (the deadliest prison in Syria) at the very start of the civil war as a way to use the excuse “fighting terrorism” against peaceful syrian protesters who were just defending themselves from his radical supporters known as the Shabiha (The Ghosts) which shot at protesters from rooftops.
@ترهبون به عدو الله وعدوكم 3 that's why we shouldn't take FSA as if it was one group , it's mixed with different groups with different ideologies and goals and it is why there were so much from them switching allegiances easily and joining nusrah or dawlah. it's also why it was so unorganized for a long time without a real central command and this led to many western supplied weapons or western trained fighters could easily end up in the hands of 'jihadi' factions

quick addition Daesh (most commenly written like that if translated into western letters), has also more meanings to native speakers. shortening words is uncommen in arabic, so it is an insult to the members, also it is close to the arabic word of "daes" which mean "to stomp something" which is connected to them only destroying. It also keeps the the word "islamic" out of their name, which is very important because they are not true muslims.
0:24 it’s actually spelled “daesh”
Nice video to lecture all those who (seemingly out of nowhere) become mid-east experts and analysts every time something´s happening in the region or even those folks, who don´t even try and are quick to propagate stupid conspiracy theories (the foreign-intelligence-shit).
Though the video has one major flaw; when the MSC merged with other groups in 2006, Abu Ayyub al-Masri became the Deputy and Minister of War to the new, overall leader of the Islamic State of Iraq (it´s first Amir if you will); Abu Umar al-Baghdadi (former policeman from Anbar, whose real name was Hamid bin Dawud az-Zawi).
