If you were to visit some piracy communities and search what people say about Adobe - especially the people who crack Adobe software - if you hear what they have to say your head'll explode. Short story: sometimes cracks made 3 or 4 years ago will still work on new versions being released today.

My then 16 yo daughter's Visual Design course dictated Photoshop, so she came home asking for a subscription. I point blank refused stating that it was overkill for her needs and would cost hundreds of dollars. Despite me still having an older Mac version of Photoshop in a box she had a Windows laptop so I introduced her to open source alternatives like Krita, Gimp, Blender, Kdenlive etc...everything I could think of, and I asked her to show her teacher. She confirmed my suspicion, her teacher had never heard of open source nor of these alternatives. My point is that the school actually stopped promoting Adobe and standardised to FOSS saving parents a small fortune. It can be done.

@samshort365 Was that a long time ago? Adobe made it so that earlier versions we used to buy on discs can no longer be used. When I started in 2010, I was able to buy the software, but over the years Adobe stopped supporting it and the subscription model was the only choice.

I agree! It's staggering how little progress Adobe has made in InDesign since version CS6.0 which I purchased once (the last version you could purchase without subscription, more than ten years ago). Never did I subscribe to Adobe. Affinity Publisher does the job and there's even an iPad version available!

I imported my Lightroom catalog with 68k photos in Capture One without a hitch. It kept all the thumbs, organization, collections, keywords, color flags, some basic edits. Navigation is pretty snappy. You will lose your raw edits, but before dropping Lightroom, I output all my edited photos to tif or jpgs. Capture one raw workflow is comparable to lroom. Best of all, one time payment available.

Tried using Affinity Photo several times after using PS twenty years, primarily for photo compositing. I liked it, but there were a few things that I couldn't figure out how to do in AP. And I didn't have time for lots of trial and error or to live on the forum for a few days for each issue. A video that covers the DETAILS of how to use AP for common PS functions would be GREAT. EX: Smart Objects.

Publisher's ability to do Photo and Designer built in is something you can see in another Adobe Competitor, Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve.
Instead of having to load up Premiere, After Effects, and Composer, you are able to do all of that in DaVInci Resolve similar to how you descrived Publisher.
People say Adobe's Dynamic Linking is the best thing. I'd say it's pretty neat, like having a friend whose a mechanic, another whose a plumber, and another whose an electrician living in the same town as you. If anything goes wrong with your home or car, they can stop by tomorrow or later that day. DaVinci Resolve and Publisher is like having the mechanic, plumber, and electrician being your roommate. If you need them, they're already there.

All of the replies to my previous post seem to have been deleted, perhaps this one will get passed the algorithms. To summarise, my daughter completed her course 5 years ago. The CD versions of photoshop still work under emulation or on older systems (I have found that 32 bit Tiny Windows 7 gives the best performance under virtualbox). The open source Darktable app is a good replacement for Photoshop Fix, although I also use PhotoGIMP (GIMP with a photoshop interface), which I believe is no longer maintained, but can be easily recreated from the standard GIMP. It also comes pre-installed on TwisterOS, an ARM version of Linux. Finally, thanks to all of you for your kind comments.

I had been using APS since version 3. Then in the mid 20-teens Adobe just started becoming insufferable. I ran across your video in 2019 about cutting the Adobe cord. I took the leap, dropped Adobe, and I haven't looked back. ANYONE telling you that you cannot operate without APS is blowing smoke clean up your anal gums. Not only do I operate without APS and Premier Pro, I've THRIVED with an extra $575 in my pocket every year. Thank you for showing me the way.

Never believed in the whole subscription concept. For multiple reasons. For example…I hate how often products are updated. It seems every other day you need to download an update. Or after an update you now lost the location of several functions because some stupid software engineer decided it was better to put it in some other buried menu. So now you need to learn how to use the program all over again. I once paid $50 for a publisher type program and I used it for 12 years because every time I went to use it I didn’t need to relearn half the program.

I've been doing astrophotography since 1968 with the wet and dry darkroom scheme. I have a standalone PS-6 and I have no problem with it as my use is not as much as a professional. Gimp is close but crashes with some large images. I do mosaics of 15 images or more full size frames and at 16-bit.

Seems like with the implementation of Generative Ai, the only thing chomping at the bit are guppies. Adobe has made it simple and easy to use ai. Their infrastructure and asset library are huge in comparison. When other design apps follow in Adobe's footsteps, closing the gap, then Adobe they might need to worry. As great as any alternative app is, the meg that is Adobe goes unchallenged.

It’s good to hear that one Affinity license can now be used across different platforms.
I bought the Windows version after seeing your videos four or five years ago, but then changed to Mac and found that my Affinity license did not cover it.
Rather than buy Affinity again, I chose to stick with Adobe because I’d been using it for two decades and it spared me another learning curve.

The problem with serif is they don’t compete with Adobe. They said that themselves.
    Issue 2 color interpretation.
    Issue 3 no dam
Issue 4 and most importantly the raw developer is bad.
You will still have to use a subscription service to be able to do high end work.
    I’m talking the .01% quality.
You need stuff like c1 for high end photo work.
Can c1 open as many photos in raw as Adobe software can? I’ve yet to try that part out.

My dislike for Adobe goes all the way back to the time when the only Postscript printer cost as much as a used car.
As I remember it, Ventura Publisher was the hot shit at the time, and it wanted a postscript printer. I can't remember
exactly, maybe it was AST. All I remember is that the printer was hiway robbery and there is no doubt that the price
of it was hugely inflated by the fact that it had the Adobe Postscript engine embedded in it's firmware, or should I say "forth".
My memory of the time is clouded in pain because I was a one man shop/startup and buying Ventura and the printer
had me eating beans for quite a while.

I'm an Adobe user. I also have Affinity , which i like a lot. But to be honest, Affinity is just inferior to Photoshop.
They lack AI masking- Generative Fill - Generative expand - Remove Tool (AI of course) .The list is very long. IF I have an image that has color cast , I can easily correct it in Photoshop. I know how to do it in Affinity , but it's more hit and miss.
Develop a RAW file in Affinity 's Develop persona is not pleasant at all. It's probably their weakest point. Adobe is here light years ahead.
A good combination here is probably DxO PL Elite + Affinity. But , DxO also need AI masking.

The recent Adobe terms of service debacle got me looking at alternatives for PS and LR. Affinity Photo looks like a promising replacement for PS... definitely taking advantage of the extended free trial. But considering they're having a 50% off sale at the moment, it's tempting to just go ahead and buy it. LR is the more difficult piece of software to replace though. Currently leaning towards DxO Photolab... and that's gonna be a much more expensive move, especially if I spring for their entire suite of products.

Actually Adobe has briliant sofwares. Not as good as they used to be, but still very good. THe only one that can NOT be substitute with anything else is After Effects. You can say that, Davinci+Fusion combo is the same - it's not.
I tried to work Affinity. It was very difficult because after 20 plus years in Adobe world it was really difficult to change my brain. And Affinity does not give any help to ex-Adobe users. They should and far mor people would change. By the way, even it has countless advantages, Adobe is still better. Not far better but better.

As a 3D designer, substance painter and substance suite is hard. I did cancel my sub., on both substance suit and PS. PS seems like an easy transition (used PS for 20+ years). I use Krita for drawing, and probably will go Affinity for retouch/photo stuff. DaVinci is already good in the video edit space. But again, substance suite is a hard one. Trying 3D-coat for now in replacement for substance painter, but I don't think there's a single software out there that can replace Substance Designer as of now.

The area that seems to have me stuck needing to leave the Creative Cloud bloat installed is CMYK print work. For example, printing halftone separations for screen printing.
In Photoshop & Acrobat, doing this is dead simple, and 100% reliable. You just make a Colour Halftone, and then select Separations when you print.
Affinity does not print separations. So that means either multi-step printing turning layers on and off, or exporting as a PDF, and then printing separations in, you guessed it, Acrobat. Other PDF apps do not support printing separations.
Does anyone know of an affordable solution for this? Testing Scribus right now, but it's a little funky.

  • @daigriffiths399

Affinity is good - it always was as far back as the original Serif releases, BUT what keeps me tethered to PS is the ability to export as DDS natively via an Intel or Nvidia plugin. It is THE most asked-for upgrade in Affinity and has been since the initial release. Yes, I could use Nvidia's standalone converter but, AFAIAC, it has two downsides: it breaks my workflow and it's nearly impossible to read on a 3840 x 2160 (4K) monitor.
In place of Lightroom I'm using ON1 (pronounced OnOne) which, without a doubt, is a far superior piece of photo editing software. It used to be 'go make a cup of coffee while it starts up' slow but the current version has absolutely addressed that problem.

Thank you very much for your videos. I admire your energy and your fighting spirit. 💪 I have been a Lightroom and Photoshop user for ages. I believe I've been using Lightroom since version 1.0 (or was it 0.9? 😃). Basically, I am a very simple user. No video, no illustrations... just photos. Some time ago, I also searched for and found other products, and I ended up with Affinity. When I compare my results, I even like the Affinity results better than my Lightroom results... I can't explain why. So, I am not afraid to learn new software... but what seems irreplaceable to me is the Library functionality of Lightroom. My whole (digital photo) life is in these libraries. I am super organized and have probably exploited the Library functions more than the photo functions. Therefore, my question is... which independent, standalone product can I use to integrate Lightroom Libraries and to use it in future as the center of my photo software? I hope I was able to explain my dilemma. English is not my native language. I would appreciate a video on this specific topic. Thank you very much, Martin.

I hear a lot of "industry standard" when I talk about alternatives, but we haven't started talking about format for the work we do. Our formats are tied to Software and so Companies, like AEP - After Effects - Adobe. By now what is the preferred formats outside of company (or maybe I should say proprietary??) formats to share between Designers, between Web Desigers. I can't think of any besides maybe SVG.
Edit: I do know Affinity can open and save PSD and AI, its just that it's not complete enough to open in After Effects and still have editable text.
