I use watch winders because you are going to have to have your watched serviced every 5-10 years anyway (depending on use) and a watch winder does not seem to accelerate that.
7:15 would block the date on most of my watches. I usually like to have the date wheel visible and 12 o clock free. But I think we can all agree that the hands have to be spaced out.
When the question about the special Jack Forster watch came up I KNEW he would bring up the Easter complication, I remember him bringing it up a couple years ago on Hodinkee Radio and it hasn't really left my mind either, such an interesting problem with not a lot of real world impact, but that's what the world of watches is today, nobody needs one, but we obsess over them anyway
Grand Seiko would be best positioned to implement that sunrise/sunset complication. They just need to get their spring driver to power an IC with a GPS receiver. Easier said than done I imagine.
The Krayon Everywhere has this precise complication. It's $ 600,000. The Anywhere is only $100,000 if you prefer to send it back for adjustment every time you move.
hey hodinkee, i'm fascinated by the grand seiko spring drive. but i'm curious, how might it fare against traditional mechanical movements in terms of reliability?
Because sunrise and sunset is dependant upon where you are at at the time of sunrise or sunser, you would have people complaining all the time that its off.
Spring drive? Why don’t all watches have this (patent allowing)? The stuttering seconds of the Swiss luxury movements has become an irritating motion for a watch so expensive.
The thing I don't like about the spring drive movement is that it's not purely mechanical. Sure, they don't use a battery, but they do use electricity, and an integrated circuit. For me this is a deal breaker.
Hey, don't endorse the use of a mobile telephone device for anything other than it's primary use (& for replacing a watch ). How about a quartz e.g. Casio Oceanus or a G-Shock 5610? I know well a sloth (& ni e chap) that has both in his collection
How about it’s because “spring drive“ is a hoax. We don’t identify a watch by the system that powers it. If we did quartz watches would be battery watches instead. We’ve always identified watches by the escapement, either mechanical or quartz. Seiko pulled off a genius marketing move by calling quartz watches that are driven by a spring “spring drives“ because they knew no collector would buy these watches if they were simply called quartz.
Spring drive is quartz. Has a quartz inside, therefore it is quartz. As you said, spring drive is just another marketing term to sell overpriced quartz movements.
Thank you Jack for being such a nerd about this horology..... Bravo.
Sunrise/sunset chime would be an incredible watch complication.
Love the Easter complication idea! Keep up the great work with these videos!

2:40 10 past 10 ,represents the person who open arms to ready to hug you 🤗
Jack's ideas for a dream watch are out there, but as soon as I heard them, I thought: "Damn, those are things I'd really love too."
Jack: proving both taste and sexy are subjective in just eight minutes and thirty seconds.
8:19 Agree.
That sunrise and sunset idea is awesome!
I always look forward to these videos. It’s like attending watch school!

So much fun…again!
Can’t wait for tonight to try the 8:50 position. 😉
Or turn your watch around if it's at 3:20 & imagine it's 8:50?

Too much power required I think.
@@delmund Way too much. And you will require additional space for in esp. the GPS antenna.
I absolutely love the idea of a sunrise and sunset chime. And now it's all I'm going to think about. Thanks 😳
his dream watch ideas are nuts, shows his passion for horology
Love this series, especially the comment on keeping corpses. How true!
Rest in Power brother! Gone but not forgotten.
What an entertaining video, great stuff keep up the good work 🙂
That three gong sunrise/sunset complication would be so good.
A latitude and longitude complication to make the sunrise sunset complication work. I’d like to see that in a mechanical watch. 😉

@@RandomGuyRandomNumber The Krayon Sun Sonnerie . . . That would be my grail
The ‘at your location’ part might have to be assisted by some type of electronics with GPS. Just thinking out loud
what watch brand would you recommend for a budget around 4k. I like tool watch
This was great!
Great stuff!
I thought he was about to say: "hey if 8.50 is your favorite, then set your watch to that time, stop it and enjoy"
Do u always wear a mechanical watch and a smart watch concurrently ?
QUESTION : I understand from Rolex they only use IF diamonds for their timepieces. What exactly does that mean, and where are they sourced from?
Fair to say I can’t understand around 90% of the discussion but still decide to continue watching until it finishes.
hey hodinkee, i'm fascinated by the grand seiko spring drive. but i'm curious, how might it fare against traditional mechanical movements in terms of reliability?
Since there is no yanking there, it will be running with far less wear.

Is Jonathan McWhorter any relation to John, the linguist??
Sad to know that this is the last Hey Hodinkee with Jack
He’d spec a round watch, whilst wearing an Apple Watch.😅
the real question is how did Jack get a ROLEX GILET??? And where can I get one
Ding ding ding!!!!

6:30 is the best time on a watch, hands down…
Kind of has a natural association with a winding down period of the day too.
Anyone else find the insurance ads annoying?
Finally someone answered the forbidden question
The reason is they sell boring watches at huge prices and there appears to be no shortage of suckers out there.
I called Hodinkee today to buy a $7K watch and they hung up on me because I would not leave a message and wait for a "remote" person to call me back.
3:55
He did NOT answer the question!!!
Watches have "wheel-trains", not "gear-trains", "whee-to-pinon", please make a note of it.
Winding and setting a watch is all part of the experience of owning such watch. If you’re too lazy for that then use your cellphone!

Why can Rolex do a solar power movement.....?
plesse please please stop wearing two watches... thats if you can call an apples watch an actual watch
Who cares about Easter?
First!
Just want to say, great content to Jack and the team. Jack is a wonderful personality to do these videos, cheers!

I don’t think you understand spring drive
