I know Jack didn't mean to do this, but in his philosophizing on date windows and rage culture and enthusiast posturing (both real things to be sure), he neglected to mention the actual reason why many people don't like date windows. For some, it's just an honest-to-god preference for dial symmetry. That's it. Everyone's allowed their differing opinions and tastes, and we can all still be friends here.
Absolutely. He could have also mentioned how sloppy it looks when most manufacturers use a different font on the date than on the dial, or how annoying can be to set up the date and time for watch enthusiasts that have several watches and don’t like using winders. Just two examples of why people might not like date windows
I don’t like dates because I own more than one watch and it takes longer to set the time when I pick up a new one. In and of themself, I don’t mind them at all.
Dates are really useful! Just got a 16660 and love how that one sits - small enough and symmetrical as to where you might not even notice it’s there - but you need good eyes to see it
Jack is one of the few watch "influencers" that gets it though, watches with date just sell better. I see a bunch of "enthusiasts" scratching their heads thinking why should brands put dates on watches. They will sell at least 2~3 times more than non-date watches. Coming from a person worked at retail.
The big thing about a date window in a watch is not whether it's good or bad it's where they tend to punt them messes up the symmetry of the watch. 6:00 or 12:00 date windows are the best for me
If you don't like date windows, but still want a date function, the pointer date is an interesting alternative. Oris are probably most famous for this complication though other manufacturers have done it. If you want titanium, Citizen brought the first titanium watches to the market in the late 60s, so know their stuff and still have titanium watches in their ranges...
I'm not mad at date windows but I usually prefer dials without as they generally have a more pleasing esthetic to me. There are ways to display the date that are less disruptive to the design. It's not really a symmetry thing as I like a lot of asymmetric and unusual dial compositions, but I know it is for some. Please do longer videos, really like these!
While I wouldn’t call it hate, I generally dislike dates on watches due to the disruption in design. I think the only brand to have done it in a somewhat reasonable way is Omega (placing it at 6)
Hey Hodinkee, my clepsydra was captured by the RSA (Rebel Sundial Alliance) and waterboarded to spill info it had on verge and foliot manoeuvres in southern Germany. What cocktail best goes with a 116400-GV Z-blue?
I've had times where I left my watch home as my Datejust was left unworn for a few days and I had to change the date before leaving home. Date windows are not suitable for grab-and-go situations. It is a chore to have them all wound up and ready all the time so that you can wear whichever piece you like.
My biggest problem with date windows is not the feature itself, but rather that many brands seem to treat them as an afterthought. Perhaps the most common example is using a different window color than the dial color. Another is using a font that doesn't match or compliment the style of the watch. I'd happily wear a watch with a well designed date window.
I like a TASTEFUL date windows, put in with the overall design in mind. Sinn 556 and 104 Do this perfectly, where they are very legible and attractive, but are not an eye sore.
As a couple of other commentators have intimated, it's surely the minority who are irrationally against date windows per se. It's the execution of date windows that more often bugs people. That is often lazy and/or ill-fitting with the rest of the dial.
Tell you something really crazy; I hate date windows as they do ruin a dial for me, however, there are some date windows on certain watches that just do it for me and those date windows are usually well framed. Do you know why a well framed date window does it for me? Patek and Grand Seiko have popularized them! and made them look great
I love clean looking dials and am not a fan of date complications. That said, I amaze myself how often I look at my watch for the date. I realize this because I caught myself looking for today's date on my chronograph....which has no date complication lol My biggest complaint with date complications is in my advancing years I can't read them unless they have a cyclops.
Personally I dislike date windows because they usually ruin the symmetry, look like an afterthought and are useless unless you have memory issues - I only need it once per day. Good video, Cheers 👍🏻
Actually the pioneer of using titanium in watch industry was Citizen not Seiko, and again actually they are making the best titanium for watch cases and they call it super titanium.
Me, I just have trouble reading the tiny little date in the tiny little date window. As such, it's just a reminder that my eyes, along with the rest of me, are getting old. Jack, where did you get that cool looking hourglass?
He is wrong about the problem with the date window. The problem is that a date window, contrary to a date pointer, is a "digital" display on an analog watch and that is, to say the least, inconsistent on an analog watch. That was for me the main reason to buy an Oris Radius Pointer. Unfortunately it turned out to be not waterproof, but that is another story.
Two things: my god, do I love Jack; and, second, my date window is my iPhone. People dislike the distraction and asymmetry, that’s why they hate date windows. 😂
My opinion is the hate for date windows is because they are so frequently poorly executed, especially from companies who have no excuse to poorly execute said date window. My personal issue moreso one of design, i rarely see date windows that don't interrupt the dial or mar the beauty of the watch.
There are date windows that are atrocious (such as the Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage-awful!), and there are date windows that enhance the watch. The old Hodinkee would have provided that answer (and they said just that in earlier articles). But those days seem to be over, today’s Hodinkee acts like a shill for the brands, reluctant to say anything even remotely critical about them. Sadly, that now results in calling enthusiasts with legitimate criticism, whiny idiots who dislike date windows to fill a psychological need to distinguish themselves, when the truth is that some watches just don’t do them all that well.
Not only are you gonna get a date window....you'll get a cyclops too...oh my goodness I can feel the walls closing in on me..a wonderful example of 1st world problems...by the way...no date..I swear I sold my date Sub for a non date Sub for this very reason !!!
A moment of Honesty for Jack; I did not want to do this because I have a few other channels I support more. However, if you guys want to get your views elevated as you once had them, Jack may need to divert attention to writing and move towards his own show based on watches. It will be a good idea and can be made to target a more mature audience, existing as well as a new audience. My name is Joey, do remember my name folks at Hodinkee.

But... symmetry is boring :(
Jack is one of the few watch "influencers" that gets it though, watches with date just sell better. Came for the watch content. Stayed for the existential crisis on transcending the fickle banalities of our human nature.
Thank you Jack and Hodinkee for this video! Very nice, like always!
I think that is a very succinct and insightful look at anger. Nice one, Jack.
Citizen is a pioneer of titanium alloy, aka super titanium.
Yeah, but they don’t pay as much as Seiko and IWC...
Nice info on titanium watches.

great explanation on titanium watches...thank you

I want the date window. It’s not some crazy complication and it’s useful.
While I wouldn’t call it hate, I generally dislike dates on watches due to the disruption in design. I think the only brand to have done it in a somewhat reasonable way is Omega (placing it at 6)
Jack is looking younger and fresher than ever! Life seems to be treating you well Sir, all the best.
How do you know whether a watch enthusiast hates date windows?
Don’t worry, they will tell you 👆🏻👇🏻.
Small correction, Citizen is a Pioneer in titanium watches, not so much Seiko
Hey Hodinkee, my clepsydra was captured by the RSA (Rebel Sundial Alliance) and waterboarded to spill info it had on verge and foliot manoeuvres in southern Germany. What cocktail best goes with a 116400-GV Z-blue?
People with multiple watches don't like date windows because it's a hassle to set the date when you just want to pick up a different watch on the run.
I fall into this camp. I like date on my main everyday watch, but for the other watches in the rotation I prefer no date for ease of set up.
I've had times where I left my watch home as my Datejust was left unworn for a few days and I had to change the date before leaving home. Date windows are not suitable for grab-and-go situations. Great video Jack! Cool series keep up the great work 🤓
@Hodinkee what watch has traveled the most thru time? On a relative basis? Is there one on the ISS maybe?
I love a date window, I love an hour glass, I love Grand Seiko Snowflake and I love this episode of Hey Hodinkee ❤️
I love this series
Guys, where is the intro song from? Can't remember....

This is brilliant.
A date window is a must for me.
I dislike date windows because it breaks up many watches that would look better if perfectly symmetrical.
I like a TASTEFUL date windows, put in with the overall design in mind. Sinn 556 and 104 Do this perfectly, where they are very legible and attractive, but are not an eye sore.
Scratch resistant Titanium = Citizen…. Vickers scale confirms it.
As a couple of other commentators have intimated, it's surely the minority who are irrationally against date windows per se. It's the execution of date windows that more often bugs people. That is often lazy and/or ill-fitting with the rest of the dial.
i dun like date on watches either, but not for all cases. For some cases it destroy the dial and other cases it destroy the symmetry.
Jack would make a great voice over artist.
Tell you something really crazy; I hate date windows as they do ruin a dial for me, however, there are some date windows on certain watches that just do it for me and those date windows are usually well framed. THE TITAN OF TIMEPIECES 🤣🤣🤣 YO WHO THE HELL’S EDITING THE VIDEO? I LIKE THAT!!!
I like Jack !
I love date windows. I have several watches without dates, and I always feel like something is missing
I wish Tudor would of done something like Seiko on the pelagos watch.. it's a beautiful watch but scratch magnet
No love for the Omega Speedmaster ‘57 in titanium?
That answer about hourglasses took a quick, dark turn there....
Much prefer a date so useful, also I'm wearing a datejust 36 perfect 👍
Personally I dislike date windows because they usually ruin the symmetry, look like an afterthought and are useless unless you have memory issues - I only need it once per day.
Good video, Cheers 👍🏻
THE INEVITABLE REALITY OF DEATH.
I need a date window on my watch more than the secondshand tbh
Actually the pioneer of using titanium in watch industry was Citizen not Seiko, and again actually they are making the best titanium for watch cases and they call it super titanium.
Love a date window but it needs to be at 3 o’clock for me
Hodinkee can at times be a little pretentious. Jack is someone who keeps it light and real.
Me, I just have trouble reading the tiny little date in the tiny little date window. As such, it's just a reminder that my eyes, along with the rest of me, are getting old.
Jack, where did you get that cool looking hourglass?
Love it
Can’t you get a titanium watch that has a 1200 Vickers coating on it like Traska watches?
*Covid project work from home: I need my day date. Projects I work on take months. Days and weeks blend together. Now where's my pants?
Jack was wearing the classic Rolex Day-Date here
Panerai were the first to use recycled Titanium for their watch cases !
Uuuh I think people hate date windows because it's intrusive on the beautiful dial we paid a lot of money to look at.
Having a good look at this guy, he appears to be half Asian. Never noticed that before. Reminds me of Chris Nichols from DPReview.
He is wrong about the problem with the date window. The problem is that a date window, contrary to a date pointer, is a "digital" display on an analog watch and that is, to say the least, inconsistent on an analog watch.

Interesting…I did not know people dislike date window. I prefer watches with date window because it’s useful.
0:47 … 🤔 … 1:34
I feel like date windows just give some people something to do with their watches sometimes once a month.
Two things: my god, do
I love Jack; and, second, my date window is my iPhone. People dislike
the distraction and asymmetry, that’s why they hate date windows. 😂
Liking and commenting for drinky bird
Don't hate the date!
I love the date window. Getting my money worth. Lol
My opinion is the hate for date windows is because they are so frequently poorly executed, especially from companies who have no excuse to poorly execute said date window.
My personal issue moreso one of design, i rarely see date windows that don't interrupt the dial or mar the beauty of the watch.
Why are these videos too short?
I have zero hate for date windows. Who has time to hate a date window?
I like date windows (framed, if possible) at the 3 or 6, 4 looks like it is an afterthought.
Because it's a pain setting the date.
People paying more for no dates :: people paying more for dot over 90
Hodinky means in Cech language watch XD
There are date windows that are atrocious (such as the Alpina Seastrong Diver Heritage-awful!), and there are date windows that enhance the watch. The old Hodinkee would have provided that answer (and they said just that in earlier articles). Way to prove his point about people overthinking it.
I hate date window… ruining the symmetry
Not only are you gonna get a date window....you'll get a cyclops too...oh my goodness I can feel the walls closing in on me..a wonderful example of 1st world problems...by the way...no date..I swear I sold my date Sub for a non date Sub for this very reason !!!
I don’t buy a watch unless it has a date window.
Rich people problems.
Correctemundo
nah he tweakin

You bash people who hate date windows.... remind me where the date window is on your 5 Days Oris 65....?????
A moment of Honesty for Jack; I did not want to do this because I have a few other channels I support more.
