- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- Jack Forster is tackling something often discussed but rarely broken down in the watch world: the manufacture. More specifcally, he delves into what people think when they consider a watch brand as a "manufacture" and how true this idea really is within the industry.

2 years after joining The WatchBox, we have a Jack Forster sighting...In all seriousness Jack, where have you been? You just seemed to disappear off the radar...
Only watch RUclips commentators can still be bitter when they finally get what they want.
I didn't sense bitterness in the comment? anyways Jack has been writing for watchbox as well as on his Substack. He also appeared on several watchbox vidoes
The voice of trust - Jack!
It's great to be back except maybe for that guy further down who said I looked like a boiled egg, the truth hurts 😂yeah so writing a lot for WatchBox/The 1916 Company, have an intermittently active substack (Split Seconds) and you know, watching the industry and watch editorial with a careful eye
@@davidr2802 Im not bitter, I was enjoying his silence.
Would love to see more of Jack Forster!
Same here! This is such valuable information
So nice to see Jack again! What do we need? More cowbell… and more Jack Forster!
Gonna need more of these episodes!!
One has to appreciate the unserious seriousness that Jack brings to the table. One of a kind!
More Jack please!!
Hodinkee should be crying for losing this guy. Excellent production.!
Jack is an old white straight cis male who represents the patriarchy. For a woke company like Hodinkee, that's a bad thing. Hodinkee is actively hiring young, minority, trans, or other underrepresented groups in the pursuit of gaining DEI and ESG points.
most SWISS MADE watches are anything but
Background music is so loud, it interferes with listening of the narrative
Jack did a little quiet jail time. Now he's back, baby & he wants revenge!
Nice piece, Jack!
Great episode as usual, really enjoying Jack’s educational content. Thank you WatchBox!
Love such features! Jack is a legend pls hope to see more of him 😊
Sorry, if you don't have an alligator farm raising the future suppliers of your watch straps then you don't get to call yourself a "manufacture." And sorry, I don't make the rules.
Learned 2 things here:
1. Jack's French pronunciation is quite good
2. Karl Marx was a watch enthusiast
Prefer vertical integration. As that's where you'll find invention. As opposed to selecting.
Haven't missed the smugness of Hodinkee one iota. If you're going to give him a run to shake off all that Beta boy sheen @ Hodinkee at least give him something to sink his teeth into. This seems liked a warmed over Hodinkee post circa 2020. Jack Forster is talented. Get him something regular, interesting, and challenging...
Bring back Jack.
I miss Jack 😔
Even Seiko used to outsource bracelet manufacturing to companies like Stelux. Who also made bracelets for the Swiss industry.
Jack hitting all the French syllables.
Agreed. Inhouse is overrated.
Jack’s back! I was checking the obituary columns
More Jack please!!! Keep the awesome content rolling! ❤
"Manufacture": file under "marketing BS to justify exorbitant pricing". Like "in-house".
Are Seiko and Orient "manufactures"?
How many Swiss "manufactures" make their own balance springs and how many buy them from Nivarox, which is the market-leading specialist and part of the Swatch Group?
For some reason I was getting unmistakable Wes Anderson vibes from Mr Forster reading Marx. Good use of a Joseph Beuys-channeling fishing-vest too.
While not conclusive, I do think it says a lot that most of the most expensive watches ever sold at auction are not “in house”. That segment of the market clearly doesn’t care, so why should we?
Great breakdown. Thank you. Personally, I don't care when watch brands use outside suppliers, only when they lie about it to justify higher costs. These days, it seems only independent/micro brands are willing to be fully transparent, which is a shame.
Precisely !
The origin of the problematic labelling manufacture came from companies such as IWC and Panerai who charged premium for Sellitas and ETAs movements. I don’t have any problem with watch companies importing components from various suppliers as long as they’re honest. Laurent Ferrier is a great example of a watchmaker: he imports his components, assembles the watch and brings great care finishing the watch.
🤯 😮🙏🏽
Can you do more of these educational videos?? Please! Things I’ve heard about mechanical watches are finally making sense, eg, “when a reviewer says a watch brand makes its own mainspring…”
We have all missed this man. Welcome back Jack!
How about Jlc and zenith? How much of them are fully vertical integrated? 70% 80%?
Nomos and Glashütte Orginial do 95% of their Parts inhouse. Lang&Heyne in Dresden even does 97%
If you perform a Reverso on the six, then 1919 is the largest X coordinate on the most popular screen resolution, and I love watches. Can I get a Skmei for this realization?
Love this! Fantastic to see Jack back again! We've all missed you!
Some of the greatest timepieces in history wouldn't exist if it were limited by the capabilities of any one 'manufacture'...a lot of it is BS and marketing these days!
Thank you for another great video! What watch is Jack wearing… looks like an Explorer??
Fantastic video! We need more of Jack Forster!! I would love to hear his take on modified ETA movements such as the Powermatic 80 family of movements and L series for Longines.
Great vid, glad to see that radio silence has been broken. Can you do a vid on what to expect from Universal Geneve?, thank you. Chris
Great video! Quoting Capital is always welcome, as it's one of the most important written works of all time, and it happens to have one of the most relevant quotes on this subject. Class act as always Jack.
Awesome to see Jack ! I really enjoy his intricate technical discussions. 👏🏽🍾🥂😉👍🏽
Jack, impressive, your French is very good, bien sur! Thank you Chris
Jaaaack!!!!!
You went from watchbox which wasn’t a great name to begin with to 1916? Right after Rolex introduced the 1918. Weird
and not to be confused with the famous 1911 pistol or the 1919 Blacksox Scandal.
Ha ha. I love the 1911. And I meant Rolex 1908. @@clintbrutus6182
It's a major marketing blunder...like when Peter Arnell took the orange with a straw in it off the Tropicana bottle.
Not dissimilar to the smartphones which seek to replace them. A follow up episode on pros/cons of ‘in-house’ please Jack!
Jack remains the greatest watch journalist of all time, sadly a dying breed.
Looking forward to seeing more Jack! Perhaps with Tim in the same video!
The world is a better place when a Jack Forster video (or article) drops!
Amazing , sooo good to see Jack again. I love this new show already
Soooo, it's like building/assembling cars.
AP doesn’t manufacture its own main springs
Jack, we've really missed your articles and videos. It's great to have you back!
Lots of articles on WatchBox editorial and I've been wondering for about six months if I should enable comments
@@jackjforster1 please enable comments...let there be a public square.
Loved the treatment of this important matter . Thank you Jack !
More of Mr. Forester please. Only if he is willing of course 😊
Does Rolex make it's own Crystal's ? ( Glass)
More Jack Forster please!!!
Rolex, Seiko, Grand Seiko....Vostok.
nice! there's a lot more to explain to come back Jack;)
Very cool visualization.
Great video. Let’s keep that same energy.
What a pleasant surprise 🙏
Modern watch that comes to mind is Vacheron fifty six. Absolutely fantastic piece. But because they are honest in saying the components are outsourced, and even though they assemble, finish and regulate it, newbies on the internet bad mouth it not knowing how common it us is and for the first 250 years of its operations vacheron did not use any in house movements.
I like videos like these
Yes 👌 More please
I need more Jack
The Man is back
Bravo 👏👏👏
Jack is back!
What’s the background music?
So good to see Jack back to the screens! ❤
Moser is also vertically integrated.
Excellent.
Got bored...didn't make it through the whole video.....
rolex
who the heck is the boiled egg? Whats with the comedy soundtrack ffs? (edit) Boring too.
The "boiled egg" has probably already forgotten more about the watch industry than you will ever grasp in your life
@@pedromanuellopez142 That is irrelevant to my criticism, further more Jack whossisname is an eliteist gatekeeping woke plum who presumably only knows anything about watches because his social life is a desert. I do not have any respect for him, I consider him and his ridiculous previous website Poohdinkee to be the most pretentious and risible players in watchfams history and it and him, a blot on the industry. Please feel free to ask me to elucidate with examples if you wish for further details. Eight grand alarm clock anyone?
