My first pet was a dove. I got her for my 13th birthday and I named her "palomita" she was white just like this little cutie. We got her a husband and she had babies. I miss her dearly. Well I will believe you but did the baby dove that you helped out of the shell survive?. I know with some birds like cockatiels they strongly suggest not to help them even if it appears that they are struggling a bit. I read that in many bird species the babies actually need that extra time that we perceive as struggling to separate their thin blood vessel filled membrane surrounding the egg yolk from the inner surface of the shell, now I do not know if that is true but I did try to help a couple of chicken babies with their shell very carefully and did notice that parts of the shell were actually still attached and in one it did start to bleed a bit so I backed off and let it climb and pry it's way out on it's own and it did survive but I do not know if doves are the same?. I have a flock of cockatiels and the mother bird always let's the baby work hard to get out after it pecks a circular pattern and very rarely does the mother cockatiel help just a little bit as in carefully prying just a tiny bit to make sure the baby is not stuck but never pulls the complete half shell off the baby. Did the baby dove survive?.
I have a problem my doves breed but the chicks keep on dying after three day and i find magots in the nest , i clean the nest but the same thing happens again.please help
Gert Louw , I take it your doves are outside if you getting maggots. Have you watched the parents feed the chicks? Are the parents still sitting on the chicks to keep them warm? With doves the parents do everything and it sounds like maybe the chicks are not getting the proper attention right away. What area do you live in?
Gert Louw Are they being fed by the parents? You should move the cage indoors and keep everything very clean. Something is attracting the flies to your cage because the flies are laying eggs in there because it's a good enviroment for the maggots to survive. Maggots don't just appear they hatch from eggs.

Hi Dave, it’s me again lol. So my doves have have 3 or 4 sets of babies now and none have survived except these last 2 that were hatched about 4 days ago. I’m noticing a problem and want to see what you think. The last two mornings when I wake up they haven’t been sitting on one or both of the babies. The babies were stiff so I took them out and put them in a warmer to get them back up to temp. Then return them to the nest. I think what’s happening is that the nesting basket is too big. It is like a foot in diameter. So I think she loses track of them through the night being that it’s dark and the nest is so big. Do you think I should put a smaller dog dish or whatever in there? That way it guarantees that when she’s in there that they are under her? But I’m worried about changing the nest now. Or do you think I should put a brooding light directly over the nest at night so they stay warm in she isn’t covering them
Hello Joe, what a bummer, I would go with the brooding light at this point but definitely go with a dog bowl next time. The dog bowl has always worked for my doves and homing pigeons. I didn't take my doves outside until it warmed up a bit here in MN. Do they have plenty of nesting material to make a comfortable nest? I'm hoping for the best for you.

I already had a ring neck dove when someone found a baby ringneck with PPMV1 she was struggling a lot o thought about putting her down because she was in so much pain, bit I just couldn't so I kept helping her in everything, from feeding to wiping her butt and so in four months she recovered, I let her free in my garden(is a protected one) and my pet dove named Brook was very jealous of her (I had no idea it was a she, I even named "him" Bambi) so I let him free too (he was inside home) and so, now they have a baby 😂

Keep checking the pet section in Craigslist. I see them for sale all the time here in Minneapolis. They breed like crazy so they shouldn't be hard to find.
The body color has nothing to do with their sex. It's their behavior that you need to observe. Does one bow and coo and spin around in circles. Males are very vocal. So if you have a couple of doves and they are fairly quiet you probably have all females. You can look at their feet and males feet tend to be darker or almost purple in color compared to the females that have more pink like feet. You birds should be at least a year old before you start breeding.
did it survive?? And Gerson, the male follows the female around, cooing at her because he is "driving the hen" .. after mating he wants her yo go to the nest and wait for her eggs to lay... Lol its like being put on bed rest when you're really pregnant but don't wanna lay in bed all day....

I'm curious, my Dove, Snowy (yes, that's a very unoriginal name, but I was nine,!), used to lay eggs before she died, but never once sat on them. In fact, more often than not, she would end up actually crushing them. That was before I started moving the eggs out to keep them safe. So is there a reason why she would lay eggs without a male, let alone not care for them?
Great question. Doves share the incubation and the caring of the young so even if the eggs were fertilized she will more then likely abandon them if a male is not present. Just to much work for one parent. My females do the same thing when a male is not present or if they are unfertilized.

The males feet are generally darker almost purple.Now that we are getting more daylight yours should be breeding if their old enough. Put a dog bowl on a shelf in the cage and put shredded paper or small sticks or straw on the floor. The doves will make a nest if ready. Hope that helps

Can you tell me the situation? Have you changed the location of the cage or added a cage mate? Normally they pick feathers if they are bored or stressed.

I live in South Africa and they sit on then the whole time, i check every time on the third day they die and at tha same time there is maggots

You are not supposed to help the chicks out, it is a certain death sentence for most birds.
Not the case for domestic birds. I have never had a bird abandon a chick because of human intervention.
