I vividly remember saying to my family when I saw a beautiful pigeon, “Wow! Look at that bird! It’s got like a light rainbow hue to it! What kinda bird is that?” And my siblings were a bit shocked and laughing, telling me it’s just a pigeon, as if that was supposed to make me dismiss it. I love to see how under-appreciated living things grow and behave when given the proper attention and care. Thank you!

That term, 'sky rats' was invented as a marketing phrase by a pets control company. It was to make people associate pigeons with dirty, disease carrying, pest rats. Before then no one thought of them as so dirty or diseased. They are no more dirty or dangerous than any other kind of bird, but now, thanks to the pest company, that 'rats with wing, or sky rats' has stuck in peoples minds. There are not people getting sick from pigeons or pigeon poop. Its very rare, and usually only pigeon keepers get it if they have dirty pigeon coops and don't clean their hands, or wear a mask with years and years of exposure every day to many birds and their dust.

I've been involved in wild avian rescue across the urban landscape in an Australian city for 4 decades. The ''rock pigeons'' are often maligned and called 'flying rats' where those who find them in an adverse situation are sometimes encouraged by others to forgo saving them. If you believe in freedom for birds, the right to fly and to be true to their own species but love feathered friends then a pigeon will offer all that is good about birds. I had a wild orphan. Chip was raised cage free and lived a flying life on the outside. She was bonded to myself and no other although she flew with a small flock on my property. She roosted on a ledge in the carport. She raised another orphan although that bird never bonded to me. The bird was a flock flyer. Chip used to fly above me when I rode my horse, peel off after 0.5kms to return home. When I returned she was always on the horse fence waiting for me. I have also raised hundreds of orphan parrot species to wild release. When you give parrots freedom to fly with their own kind these birds do not stay to keep ''friendship'' with humans. I always say don't own parrots. Have a pigeon and enjoy pure avian love. This is a wonderful video. I am so happy Bingi is loved and adored and happy. Thank you. Cecile...avian conservationist.

Birds develop good toilet habits with help from people. Introduce them to a perch stand or some specific spot consistently (w/protected newspaper wrapped at the bottom) the first thing after letting them out from their aviary, they will usually do their business and remain to preen. And like people, they often establish patterns of behavior - watch out and protect those destinations (i.e., paper towel runner on top cabinets). If held in place w/masking tape or small weights - a breeze to change as needed & no flying debris. Small packets of tissues/wipes strategically tucked away but in easy reach protect & take care of the "little deposits" quickly and cleanly. When staining foods like blueberries are consumed be ready & ready! It is critical to keep areas sanitary & safe for birds & those that love them!

@@LMTino I've had several large birds in my life and wasn't successful in training any of them to have good toilet habits. Wanting them to have freedom in the house during the day was a bit stressful because you can't always be watching for the "little deposits". It would have been so much easier with the bird diapers that are available nowadays.
I know exactly what you mean about the blueberries. My neighbour planted a bunch of blueberry bushes in her backyard. The crows eat all of the berries and then leave their "not so little deposits" all over the patio in my backyard. 😒

Be kind to animals, your father made the right decision to take him home w/ him. I'm happy to see Bingi is well treated, fed and has a place to sleep shielded from the bad weather. He is a happy bird now !!!!🐦🐦🐦🌹🌹🌹🌹

THANK YOU!!! Pigeons have had bad PR. They're incredible birds, even helping humans fight in WW2 (look up Cher Ami y'all). I love them and it always saddnes me that people don't understand and even abuse them. We need to speak up and educate people, and we need more videos like this. Pigeons honestly would make fantastic emotional support animals.

Thank you. I love your perspective on these beautiful smart birdies. I adore them too. It's so sad that people dislike them so much and accuse them of being dirty disease spreading aves. I've helped feral pigeons when sick or injured bringing them into my home and never been concerned that they'd make me ill. The opposite seeing them recover and go back outside fills my heart. Or heartbroken if one didn't survive. They have the sweetest energy. Beautiful birds.

I started feeding pigeons once, usually at around 12 noon. It took them only about 2/3 days to realise when I would come out and put some food out at 12 noon, and they'd be there. How the hell they knew what time it was, I didn't know. Some would even land on my shoulders as I was putting the food out. They don't seem to have much fear of people either. Walking up the highstreet you can literally walk right past them and they don't fly away.
