    Thank you for another great tutorial.
    Can't stop myself from sharing my approach for dealing with HDRI manipulations 😅
    There is the way to manipulate HDRI's rotations with 'angular' manner instead of rotating it with 'Translation sliders':
    1) Plug 'Spherical projection' node into 'Projection' slot of the 'RGB image' node instead of 'Mesh UV projection' node
    2) Then add '3D Transformation' or 'Transform value' node (they are acting the same way) into 'Sphere transformation' socket of the 'Spherical projection' node
    3) PROFIT!1!!!1 now you are able to rotate/scale/move you HDRI with all 6 degrees of freedom using sliders of the '3D transformation' node. BTW now sliders work as intended. Scale - scales, translation - translates, rotation - rotates.
    But there is still mystery for me. To Rotate your HDRI along Z axis - you should use MIDDLE slider of the Rotation field, not the third one. Third one - rotates along Y axis)))

      Thank you very much for your great comment as well as your input on the rotation.
      I remember when I discovered this trick in C4D. It´s really cool and I should have added this to the video. I am just concerned to not make those videos to long 😇
      Since its great input, I will pin your comment to the top so maybe more people see it and can use this nice technique!

    I'm glad to see someone with some credibility and influence diving into Blender + Octane. It's a bit of a gamble. Despite Octane's amazing capabilities, its integration with Blender feels broken the deeper you go. Stability wavers, and documentation often lags behind, leaving many nodes obscure or undocumented. Nodes like the planetary node seem half-finished, despite recent updates.
    Having been a Cycles user for the first 10 years of my 3D journey, I agree with skipping it altogether. It doesn't match up to other render engines in quality or functionality. While it has some neat tricks, many aren't practical for professional work. The denoiser, for example, is great at low samples but that result is still impractical for production. While at the high sample range its not as good as octanes.
    My biggest workflow complaint with Octane for Blender is the lack of an equivalent to Cycles/EEVEE's material preview mode. Other software with Octane plugins offer this feature, but in Blender, setting up a similar preview requires extra effort. A simple button to view textured models with basic lighting would be a huge improvement.

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  6 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you very much for your detailed comment. Really appreciate you took the time to write all this down 🙏
      I agree with you that Octane is not as good as it could be in Blender. This was also the reason why I shaded my latest Project with Cycles instead since Octane was rather slow with all its hiccups and rather slow to update.
      There are some things that the C4D integration does better. But in general it´s nothing that can´t be fixed.
      The good thing is, having grown with Octane over the last 10 Years, I learned new things as I went, so I am familiar with a huge pile of those nodes. Not all of them though. There are still areas in Octane where I do not know what they do exactly. Vectron is something like this for example.
      I personally would say Cycles it not too bad. Especially since the X update. I was really surprised how fast it was when I did my latest project with it. It can do amazing and it´s also quite capable I think. At least there are quite some people out there who can bring it to shine. Moonshake on Instagram comes to mind. Though I also have to say I have really no experience in contrast to your 10 years there.
      I agree with you that something like a material preview would be nice. For some situations where you need to match shaders of animations in shaders this would be super useful. Also a rendered "material ball" the material list. So you do not only have to phrase though text but also have an optical pin point on what you are looking for.
      Cheers, a fantastic rest of the weekend to you and thank you very much again for your great message again.

    Don't know, if someone already mentioned it, but if you need to edit vector values (like on 15:42), if you go for same values, you don't need to edit them separately, but you can left click and hold on the first value, then drag the cursor over all fields, you want to enter value to, then let go on the last one, and enter value.
    You can also copy/paste all values without selecting them. You can just hover the mouse over the value, ctrl-c, then hover over the target value and ctrl-v. Btw, that works with colors too.

      Thank you very much for your comment and for your help. That is a great tip. I think I heard it somewhere before that you can do that. But I could not remember how.

    learned a lot about blender octane from this, it feels like using octane standalone more than it does in c4d with the nodes for kernels and such, and yes I'd love to know hear your process when approaching material building, i believe it makes me a better artist even if i know the technique, the whats whens and whys matter much more to me than the hows sometimes, that's why there's a lot of value in your content, because you cover all of them sometimes unintentionally, sorry I'm a day later than usual haha, wish you a great week ahead Raph 🖌🌟

    I was looking for a way to manipulate vertex maps e.g. blur them and didn't realize you could use the weight painting tools for this. Much appreciated!
    Having said that, to quickly assign vertex groups to vertex selections you can also press Crtl+g and blender puts it in a new group.
    Please continue to do comparisons between Octane Blender and C4D.
    I also feel that the Blender Version has some weird behavior and would even be willing to switch to C4D if there is an advantage.

    Thanks a lot for another very helpful fantastic Tutorial Raphael!
    One question concerning the Gradient Map. You can actually chose different colors for an object in it? Is that a standard setting, or does it come with the vertex map? I wasn't aware that you can do that at all 😅And why did you chose the GGX Energy preserving setting? My apologies for those "stupid" questions, but those are the things someone like me never new they existed or never knew why I should do that setting, or what is the benefit. Again, thank you very much!!!!

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  6 месяцев назад

      Hey Christian.
      Thank you very much for your comment. Always a joy seeing you around!
      About the Gradient:
      The Gradient just remaps the values that are fed.
      The Vertex Map feeds lighter tones at the convex edges and darker tones at the concave edges. It has a middle gray value in the non curved areas. Black is mapped to the left of the gradient and white is mapped to the right. So if you put other values on the gradient, e.g. the orange on the left the darker parts that come in from the "dirty vertex colors" then will be remapped to that color.
      About GGX Energy Preserving:
      This is the default in the new principled BSDF, so if you are working with Cycles this should not be of concern.
      But if you are working with Octane I have a Tutorial about that. ruclips.net/video/qpxBOC_-NfI/видео.html
      Short answer is that with high roughness values GGX Energy Preserving has a more realistic behavior... as pure GGX has a too dark reflection at high roughness levels (since it´s not energy preserving).

    Great video! Is Octane absolutely free for blender?

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hey there and thank you very much for your nice comment and question.
      Octane for Blender is free for 1 GPU. If you want to run it on more, then you have to have a subscription.
      In order to get the free version you need to create an Otoy account and create your Blender License there.
      When running the Octane Server for the first time, you need to log in with your Otoy account to activate it!
      Hope this helped. If you have more detailed questions about that topic, feel free to ask!

    I'm a bit confused. So there is a Blender version dedicated to Octane? with a different licensing method? what if I already have 3dsmax-Octane license running (Enterprise? I thought the BlackFriday deals changed those) - So could I run Octane on blender in parallel with my 3dsmax license? (might be the case for C4D users I guess)

    • @SilverwingVFX
      @SilverwingVFX  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hey there and thank you very much for your question.
      Blender Versions:
      The install for Blender does not need a license. This is because Blender is under the Open source license. The reason there is a separate install of Blender is that the Devs could integrate Octane a bit better this way without relying on AddOns.
      The new AddOn version of Octane is trying to solve that and add Octane in to Vanilla Blender via AddOn. But as I say in the video, it´s still in Beta.
      Licensing:
      What you are licensing is always the Octane Server, never the Blender Version / AddOn.
      P.s. you just need to log in to your account once when running the server for the first time (I definitely should have mentioned that in the tut... not sure why I blanked on this while recording)
      If you already have a license then all should be fine. The license should be compatible with all packages.
      Running the same license in parallel might be possible if it is on the same machine (I have not tried) But It definitely won´t work running it at the same time on different machines.
      P.s. there is even a free version of Octane for Blender. It restricts you to one GPU, but if you need your license somewhere else at the same time it can be quite nice.
      Hope that answers your question. But absolutely feel free to post further questions or if I did not manage to answer correctly.
      Cheers,
      Raphael

      I will try running this on my laptop parallel with my main station. It will be interesting. + Octane demo for all DCCs has watermark and resolution limitation. Maybe the Blender version of the free Octane will be different, since I know Otoy pushes that direction.
      But. Nonetheless, it's great to have a custom Blender version. And thank you for spreading knowledge.

      @SilverwingVFX  6 месяцев назад

      @@OfirGardy Thank you very much for your fast answer.
      Fingers crossed you get this working!
      The free Blender Version is a full functioning one. There are no restrictions other then the 1 GPU limit.
      As far as I know you have to generate this license first. But then it should work perfectly on your laptop given that your laptop has a Nvidia GPU.

      Hey hey and thank you for your answer.
      Yeah. External GPUs are only good for rendering. Since they are connected via only 4 lanes each.
      For rendering with Octane / Cycles, that is enough.
      P.s. I noticed I did not answer your question about the power supply.
      In the workstation I have an 1500 W Be Quiet.
      Every of those GPU enclosures has a 650W PSU built in. So they have their own power supply.

      Very good question.
      I don´t actually know that.
      What I know is that you could open an Orbx in the standalone and then use the Octane Local Database to save your materials from there.
      Then you can open them from Blenders octanes Local DB.
      This should also work with any 3rd party Octane Product like C4D to get materials over to Blender Octane.
