  • Before the rear of this truck can be put back together, there are a few hurdles left to tackle. This video covers: restoring the fuel tank and a rear axle rebuild. The leaking rear axle gets a new differential cover and an in-depth look at wheel bearing replacement.

I was really impressed by how you replaced the back cover on the axle housing.
Mine is pretty rusty but not leaking. My 2002 Tacoma that I’ve had for two years now is getting everything fresh like all new oils, brakes, timing belt, valve cover gaskets.
Some frame repair whatever it needs because I don’t want to have to buy another truck again. Oh yeah I’m 70 years old and doing all the work myself. The truck was 300k miles on the clock. And what I’m doing it could get that many more. 😃

Thank you. Get that rear cover cleaned up and protected before the rust eats its way through. If we can hold the rust back, these trucks can make it a long time.
      Have fun!

@@PostRt I've got a lathe, a Bridgeport Mill, all kinds of tooling, and a motocross track in my backyard 🤣 Seriously though, don't let anyone kid you, you did this the right way and you'll get many more years out of that truck now; And the resale just doubled in price from what you've done. I can't stand hacks, I like to do things once and do them right...

Just curious, wondering why you are using your knowledge, skills, time, tools on Tacoma. Great vehicles, I own a 15, but I wouldn’t go to the effort to make it new again. Not a put down, just curious? Enjoy the videos too.

The same could be said for a lot of older vehicles. Most of the older vehicles in my area rust out and people throw them away. Unfortunately, it is usually a better option to get something new than to have it repaired. I paid cash for this Tacoma many years ago, so it owes me nothing. I'm just fixing it up in my spare time and I do enjoy the project. My truck wouldn't sell for much the way it was and I didn't want to buy a new one. For me personally, repairing it makes the most sense.

What else was he suppose to do? It's a good truck, but it was headed downhill (just like mine) had he not spent this time and fixed it up. He could drive this thing for 10/20 more years now because Toyota has such a great powertrain. They don't make lots of power, can't tow much, but they are super dependable and used vehicles are at all time high right now as well. He's also severely increased his resale value because all of these Tacoma frames are junk...

What is the brand of paint and rust encapsulator that your used? Great video!

    • @PostRt

I used Eastwood Products. Their rust encapsulator platinum and 2K ceramic chassis black. It is really good stuff and cures to a very tough finish. It sprayed well, even with cheap paint gun.

@@PostRt did you use their IFC internal frame coating product?

@efil4kizum Yes, I did. I made a video going over the process if you want to see the application.

@@PostRt how long ago did you apply it? what part of the USA are you in? i am in western Iowa region with a very old Taco lol... its relativerly clean (i hose the salt off as much as i can over 25 years) but its showing its age in certain spots underneath

@efil4kizum I installed the coating last winter, and the truck is still a work in progress. I live in Michigan, and so far, the truck has only been driven on salt free roads and cleans up super shiny!
I have been putting a lot of miles on the truck this summer but will be getting back to fixing the truck up this fall and winter.
