@@edwardcalvert I went to school in Russia. We did not have an auto-shop. But we had lathes and drill presses. I think it's different in the US as you guys can drive at 16, while in Russia one needs to be 18 to drive a car.
@@falrus I lived in a very rural area in the US and we had a couple of shop classes. We didn't have a auto shop but rather shop classes based around wood or metal. Also, most of the girls and some guys had home economy for learning home making skills and how to run a household, even covering budgeting for groceries and managing money. This was many years ago. The wood shop taught everything from bird houses to large handmade furniture, and the metal class taught things from welding to major projects such as everyone building together a single trailer from scratch, or completely rebuilding a tractor or vehicle for a local farmer. As farm kids, we were allowed legally to move equipment and vehicles in convoy from farm to farm as soon as you could see over the dash. I started driving on the road at 6 on the following my father in the equipment and I in his truck. By ten, I was driving trucks full of grain to the elevator and back. This would have been in the 80s. Every hand had to pitch in to survive back then. Things were much different then. While the cities were preaching hate for the Soviets, in the country we knew most of the people over there were just trying to survive like we were. In any case, I hope you are enjoying it here and continue to do so. It's not as nice as it used to be, but the farther out of town you go, the more freedom and hospitality you get.
@Garage 54 I was amazed at how the fluid moved laterally down the gearbox. I had always imagined it more like a sprinkler with mostly vertical and angular action, but seeing it flow heavily from end to end was something else. This would be a great learning tool for school or static display hooked to a see through engine driven electrically or or just on its own. Very nice job.

cool to see, the oil splash is an old school design. In old trucks in the winter,we used to put them into neutral transfer, and gear four..just to get the thick molasses gear oil turning,before loading it.. worked well in the frigid cold.

Man, i love this chanel, it's always interesting and the guys doing the work always seems cheerfull and happy! I already know (in theory) how a gearbox works, but SEEYING it instead of visualizing it is very cool! I didn't go to a mechanic/engeneering school, but i have a Renault Clio 1 (in a way, the french Lada), and I do everything I can to keep it in working order, so i do a lot of imagining to understand what the car do and what it needs to work properly. This chanel helped a lot to clear some grey areas, and im very thanksfull for it! you guys are awsome! I can't help but think that this gearbox would be a great tool for any mechanic school, seeying everything working in real time is a very powerfull learning tool, even for a seasoned mechanics! @@JJFX- Also the problem, considering they fund the schools to uneducate you so you just consumerism; Anyway, My school had a LOT Of chemistry props. They were told NOT to use them. So our chemistry class was the "first" generation to have no demonstrations. They had an entire room full of the goods, and they slowly started to get rid of them.
@@dimitar4y Yeah and wouldn't be surprised some of that is also lawyers ruining everything. Someone messes around with a prop, gets hurt and the parents sue the institution for millions. When I worked with the public school system it was mind blowing how quickly the districts cave to lawyers or just about anything a parent complains about for that matter.

The clear coat is great for many things, I always have a can of clear lacker engine enamel and have used it many times for certain tail lights and even plastic head lights that have gone a faded matt (poris) finish, it makes them look like new, also great for its intended purpose 😮
Another awesome experiment, and really cool to see the real deal in action through a transparent case. I was thinking for the next one maybe getting close up video of the forks and slider gears engaging the dogs up on the lift, as well as a nice view of the synchronizers matching the gears to speed maybe in slow motion as you shift. That would be very cool to see happen in a real gearbox instead of just simulation or animation. Anyway glad y'all didn't destroy it yet, and awesome video guys. I look forward to seeing what y'all do next.👍
long time ago, I had the opportunity to drive the Fiat 124, the car from which the Lada derives, and it's gear box was the most precise and smooth I ever happened to use, and your accurate (as always) job seems to confirm it

That is something. A beautiful bit of craft there. Better that it held up under a small load. Seriously impressive. I always thought it was cool to see the toy models of this kind of stuff. Although to see it scaled up and in actual use is awesome. Another masterful experiment.
unfortunately they did too good of a job aligning everything, the gears are in excellent condition - so no binding, and the lada engine is a little on the weak side, so the stress never got too big.
Seeng they already made a transparent engine, Imagine, in a few months or years, these guys will make a transparent engine and gearbox and a whole ass transparent Lada.
Nice to see how the integrity of the transmission housing isn't as important when it comes to the overall strength of the transmission. I suppose that makes sense, as the housing is what keeps the oil and transmission in place, but the gearing is what takes on the majority of the force. Awesome demonstration as always!

Manual transmision and automated manual type of transmissions(AMT/DCT/DSG) are simple and easy to understand even in hand drawings on papper. Automatic(AT) on other hand is different story. They are more complicated by desing and their work logic is interesting to be observed (if possible in slow motion) in real time on real model. Espacially the Torque Converter and it's torque converter clutch! Im always wondering when and how lock-up is performed. I know most of the time in modern vehicles torque converter running locked but also know it do frequently lock and unlock opperations to impove driving comfort. So would be happy to see working transparent automatic transmission. Ofcourse I just giving an idea for new video. I know it is complicated job espacially the valve boby part(mechatronic) with high pressure fluids to be done with transparent cover. Also only very specific torque convertors have outside mounted cluch, most of them have inside builded clutch and looking inside is almost imposible. So it know it could not be abble to happen.
I don't think the trans casing gets stressed enough in common cars. From what I've observed it isn't attached to the body. So all forces go to the engine mounts and axle. That's why the metal case is so thin. You made an absolutely great job with this project 🎉
Can you get a hold of the prints for the casing? Plexiglass will be stronger, plate on either end and heat bent body, but will need machining to get bearing seats and such in the right place.

you can use a heat gun too to 'melt' the top layer and make it clear.
Was gunna say they could have also lightly heated it with a blowtorch as well
